2.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - Apr 1, 2010

Meet Jade. Shes a brunette beauty with an eye for mystery and a camera to uncover it. When the would-be heroines futuristic planet is threatened by aliens, Jade finds herself thrust into the heart of a vicious conspiracy that could stretch to the very top of her government. This stylized, extremely gorgeous third-person action-adventure plays very much like a Zelda game. Jade can explore a huge, water-covered world by hovercraft or take to a variety of islands and interact with merchants, or tackle assignments to earn money and advance the surprisingly deep and intriguing storyline that surrounds her quest. She can also gain a number of items and weapons that are integral to advancing and a lot of fun to wield. Packed full of twists and turns and even a talking man-pig, Ubisoft has crafted yet another big adventure series. ... PROS: (1) Great graphics (2) Sense of discovery in hub world (3) interesting story in an interesting universe (4) some decent comedic moments that dont feel too lame (5) can be purchased extremely cheap ... CONS: (1) Very short, there are only 4 missions in the game, granted thy can take 3 hours each, but it is very short. (2) game breaking bugs in the PC version (3) unoptimized graphics in the PC version - even modern computers have low framerates in certain sections (4) stealth sections get boring and frustrating very quickly (5) combat is just a mash-fest

Great game, great price.
5 Star Review   By member mkelehan - Sep 6, 2005

Strengths: It's satisfying, fun, intriguing... and cheap.

Weakness: Not too long; meant to be the start of a trilogy that will likely never be finished.

For some reason, Beyond Good and Evil just didn't sell. Maybe it's because Ubi never advertised it, or because it doesn't contain recognizable characters. Still, this Zelda-with-photography adventure is a lot of fun, and got universally great reviews. This is one of them. And since the game was a failure sales-wise, you can find it way cheaper than it should be. Buy it.

Really good, but not great
4 Star Review   By member shipwreck1 - Aug 9, 2005

Strengths: Good storyline, good controls, lots of variety

Weakness: Pretty short, there probably won't be a sequel

Beyond Good & Evil is perhaps the best Zelda-clone of all time. Ubi Soft has taken all the things that make the Zelda games great and thrown them into a new universe. The game is set in a futuristic society where a large corporation/government is trying to gain complete control. Your character's name is Jade and you are a reporter set on exposing the conspiracies that are leading to the enslavement of the world. In order to do this, you must explore a large overworld in your hovercraft vehicle looking for various areas to search out on foot. Once out of your hovercraft, you can interact with the locals and learn clues to further your quest. There are various items available to increase your character's health and to power-up the hovercraft. You can earn cash to buy these upgrades by taking pictures of the local wildlife. This may not sound that exciting, but it's actually pretty fun to try and find and snap pictures of all the animals. Along with the animals, you will also meet up with a few companions during your travels. These companions can be very helpful in battle and in solving puzzles. The combat is very simple, but effective. Jade has a staff-like weapon that she can use to block and attack (all with one-button). Most of the game isn't centered around combat though, but rather exploration. There are several stealth missions and a lot of puzzles to figure out as well. There are even some hovercraft races and battles thrown in for good measure. The only downfall of the game is that it can be beaten fairly quickly. You will probably speed right through this thing in 6 to 8 hours and there really isn't any replay value after that. Overall, I would highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a Zelda-type game. It's not as great as some would tell you, but it is an extremely good game in a genre that is under-represented.

4 Star Review   By member mick16 - Jul 5, 2005

Strengths: Good Story Line and Gameplay. Graphics

Weakness: Limited Replayability. Not too long.

Great game to pick up for the Xbox. There's really nothing else on the Xbox which can compare. The game has outstanding graphics (Prince of Persia used the same graphics engine), a great storyline which grabs you and has a nice blend of humor as well. The game has some Zelda-esque qualities to it which will make you want to keep playing it until you finish. The game isn't very long, but considering the bargain prices which you can find this game if you look around, this is a real sleeper hit.

5 Star Review   By member sabin23 - Jun 30, 2005

Strengths: Superb graphics, sound and story, great adventure game along the lines of Zelda and Star Fox Adventures.

Weakness: Too short.

Beyond Good and Evil is one of those rare games that gets great critical acclaim but tanks at the retail. I remember this game getting high praise before it was released but no one picked it up at launch. I think Ubisoft paniced and decided to immediately lower the price to $19.99 within a couple of weeks. It still didn't sell. Blame it on bad marketing, blame it on a video game that was already too crowded or whatever. The bottom line, is that many gamers missed out on a great game. While I'm not saying it deserves to be ranked amongst the Top 10 games of all time, I'm certainly vouching for it being a near great title. The game is very similar to Zelda, in fact they share the same "lock on" system and the battles feel eerily familiar. There is a ton variety as you'll be battling with your staff, steering a ship in open waters, taking photos and there's even a few stealth elements. The graphics and sound are excellent while the challenging puzzles will keep you playing. I think the bottom line is that it's a solid game that provides a mix of action, adventure, stealth elements. Combine this with a great storyline and you come to realize that aren't too many games in this adventure genre that are as good as BG&E. Too bad the game is only about a 10 hour experience. Hopefully Ubisoft will agree to develop a sequel. Here's hoping!

Strengths: Graphics

I over looked this game when it first came out. I over-heard someone saying that this was a good game. I checked it out, and I fell in love with it. Its basic, simple, and easy to get into. It's a one button fighting system and all but somehow it worked really well. Anyways, its kind of easy, but it does get kinda hard in a few areas. Anyways, graphics were nice, voice overs were nice, characters were well done in a sci-fi kinda way. Story was kinda interesting, kinda a let down to, but hey, it worked out.

5 Star Review   By member jeffreyjrose - Jun 22, 2005

Strengths: Made by UbiSoft!, compelling storyline, stellar graphics, well-designed levels, great character development

Weakness: Somewhat short gameplay, not well purchased by gamers (meaning no sequel), and no replay value

This is one of those sleeper-hit titles that are made but not purchased. This is one of the best single player games that you will find made for the XBox. The graphics, storyline, cinematics, and gameplay all combine to create a genre that is not a cookie-cutter FPS, RPG, platformer, or action/adventure title. It blends the best from several different genres, creating a game that you may stay with to finish in one sitting! A+++

5 Star Review   By member MaxBiaggi2 - May 2, 2005

Strengths: The best game you're not playing, smart story and characters, mix of stealth and action adventure genres, unique cartoon-based graphics, good voice acting, cheap to purchase

Weakness: Mainstream consumers completely ignored this title, too short for its own good, unlikely to receive a sequel due to poor retail sales, limited replay value

Beyond Good and Evil came out during the holiday season of 2003, and most people missed out on it due to hype for the many higher profile titles that came out then. Gaming magazines and web sites frequently called it "the best game you're not playing" and compared it favorably to the best platforming games of its day, and the title quickly saw its retail price slashed substantially within weeks of its release. The story, characters and dialog are all top-notch, and the detailed cartoon graphics and quality voice acting give the creatures you meet real character and dimension. The one real problem is that the game itself comes to an end all too quickly, within 8-10 hours. The subsequent tragedy here is that due to BG&E's poor retail sales a sequel is highly unlikely. If you own multiple systems, the Xbox port has the best graphics of the bunch.

Strengths: Engaging story. Great action-adventure gaming experience.

Weakness: A bit short. Limited replay value.

Beyond Good & Evil is a stylish complex action-adventure game with an involving plot and believable characters. It's too bad that many people overlooked this gem of a game. The game itself is a nice mix of action and adventure elements. Many have compared the style to Zelda and it's a good comparison. The graphics are stylish and well-done. The audio is good as well with good voice acting and environmentally complementary music. Overall it's a fun game and I think most people will enjoy it.

5 Star Review   By member shrike424242 - Sep 23, 2004

Strengths: One of the best storylines and cinematics of recent memory, very interesting characters, great graphics and sound, good action, interesting spin on an action title, almost like acting in a movie

It's hard to call Beyond Good and Evil a game, it's more like an interactive movie for all of what is packaged together. A game with one of the most interesting and deep storylines that has been put out in quite some time is the highlight of this game, with many levels of plot and intrigue. It's not a pure action title, with one part of the game involving snapping pictures of the local wildlife, as the main character is a photographer, and it earns her money to do so, almost like Pokemon Snap in some ways. Her partner in this adventure helps her out to solve some of the puzzles and help out in combat, which adds depth to the weight of of the game. The graphics and sound are top-notch, easily some of the best in recent memory, almost cinematic in their quality, adding to the feel of being in an interactive movie. The action flows from personal combat to vehicle combat to photography and on and on from there. It all works together for an amazing interactive experience. Voice acting is a key part of the immersion in this game world, and it all works together perfectly. It's hard to classify this title as one specific kind of game, since it covers so many different aspects of play. Without question, it is one of the most impressive and unique games that has come out for some time, and all types of gamers should like some of this title to learn to appreciate the other parts of the game. Well worth the money, without question.

Strengths: Quirky characters, compelling story

Weakness: Not as great as everyone says it is.

I enjoyed this game overall. Sections were a little boring, and there is one really annoying boss type of battle where you have to launch your boat up in the air and shoot at this giant worm- it took me over 45 minutes to beat it (in one try). The levels are interesting, but not terribly memorable. I loved the idea of finding things to photograph for money- that was a lot of fun- but the overall game was simply ok.
