4 Star Review  GameZone - Nov 5, 2001

Getting tired of the same old recycled storylines, graphics, characters, and gameplay? Ever get the feeling like everything has been done before and things just get churned out according to some obscure marketing professional's formula? Well, fear not, console gamers, Sony has released a game upon the PS2 console that has taken the "road not taken" - and yes, "that has made all the difference." Robert Frost references aside, Ico is veritably a poetic addition to the console gaming world. An adventure title at heart, Ico tells the story of a misfortunate young boy who has suffers from a stigma that damns him: a pair of horns.

ICO (ps2)
5 Star Review  GameSpy - Oct 15, 2001

You know how sometimes you play games, and they're really good but nothing special? They just do the same old thing exceptionally well? Then there are the rare games that completely blow you away, and you just can't help but keep marveling at how brilliant just about every single aspect of it is? ICO falls into the latter category. Closer to a work of art than a game, ICO is not only one of the best games created for the PlayStation 2, it's probably one of the best games yet created.

ICO (ps2)
5 Star Review  IGN.com - Sep 25, 2001

The feeling of simply being in the world that Ico creates is one of the most fascinating things I've ever seen in a videogame. The visuals, sound, and original puzzle design come together to make something that is almost, if not quite, completely unlike anything else on the market, and feels wonderful because of it. The sensation is like a very strange dream -- a little frightening, a little beautiful, intriguing throughout -- and its only main problem is the same one all dreams suffer from. It's over a good deal sooner than you might like.

Beautiful Game
4 Star Review   By member jngx80 - Aug 21, 2005

Strengths: + visually different from other games

Weakness: - not a lot of action

I would say Ico is a lot like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time so if you liked that game, you'll also enjoy Ico. Ico is in every sense of the word an adventure game. The game does a wonderful job of creating a fantastic atmosphere and setting. There is some occassional action but most of the gameplay is trying to solve puzzles, unlocking doors, and getting over obstacles.

Ico
4 Star Review   By member StashEX - Aug 13, 2005

Strengths: Brilliant atmosphere and puzzles

Weakness: Combat is fairly weak and annoying

Ico is considered a masterpiece by many of it’s fans. It’s not hard to see why either, the atmosphere the game creates is simply brilliant. As young Ico, you team up with princess Yorda to escape a castle. The design of the game puts you two in a partnership role where you help each other overcome the layout of the castle to escape. Ico is very young, athletic and fairly strong for someone his age but he needs Yorda to unlock the gates that block your path. Yorda isn’t nearly as agile or strong as Ico so you will have to find a way to clear a path for her and protect her whenever she in danger. Generally speaking, I hate puzzles in games but Ico is an exception to the rule and I have to recommend to stay away from FAQS and strategy guides unless your completely stumped. It’s just a much better experience to overcome any obstacle on your own. Ico’s combat is really the only weak link it has. It seems like it was put in so you would have something to do other than solving puzzles, I personally would have been happy with just puzzle solving though.

One of a kind. One of the best.
5 Star Review   By member michaelsarris - Aug 10, 2005

Strengths: Atmospheric. Well-designed adventure game.

Weakness: Annoying camera. Short. Not much replayability.

Lots of positive things have been said about Ico. And there's lots to like. Innovative game play, wonderful environments, and a great sense of storytelling permeate every moment. If you like exploration, adventure games, or puzzling out what to do next given an environment, this game is for you. Much thought was put into the design of the game and the architecture of the enviroments. There is literally nothing else like it out there. The game keeps you on your toes. Unlike other adventure games, you not only have to work on the puzzles, but you have to protect your companion. This leads to interesting puzzles, since you often have to approach problems from more than one angle. If there's a downside, it's the camera. Ico was a relatively early game for the PS2, but that doesn't excuse the nauseating camera. It goes where it wants to, when it wants to. You have the ability to look around when you want, but it is dizzying and doesn't work well. Often, you can't even look right in front of your character. It really detracts from the experience. But, the game is so good, you overlook that fault, and any other minor quibbles. Sure, there's some trial and error gameplay. Sure, it's not perfect. But it's really, really good. Give the game a shot, and get past the first annoyance of not being able to save until passing that first challenge. Read the instructions, or you'll be totally lost. Once you make it past that first save, the game will absorb you and regular save points will make your experience rich and wonderful.

Smart Puzzles!!!
4 Star Review   By member thekp18 - Jul 12, 2005

Strengths: Smart Puzzles, Amazing Environments, Decent Story, Visually Stunning, Good Character Models

Weakness: Short, No Replay Value, Button-masher

Ico is one of the most underrated game of the current-gen games; yet, it is one of the best action-adventure games available for the PS2. The environments in Ico are simply outstanding. The game is set in an huge castle, and the scenery is breathtaking. Most of Ico's gameplay is solving the plenty (and very beautifully designed) environmental puzzles. The level of difficulty steadily increases throughout the game, but most the combat is button-mashing. The story is very simple, enough to make you want to play more and more. The character designs and outstanding, and the sounds in the game are also well above-average. Although this game flew under the radar, this game is a must buy for any action-adventure fan. Ico gets 8.5/10.

Strengths: Just Simply one of the best game ever for the Playstation 2 system! Best Adventure game ever! And story you'll just fall in love with.

Weakness: None!

ICO, was a hidden gem when release back when Playstation 2 was launch! being over shadow be AAA titled from Sony. Over time this game has become a cult classic! consider till this day as 1 of the top ten PS2 games. Pros: Graphic is just stunning (everything just flows together, and the whole entire world is crafted beautifully) Music soundtrack is another plus & fits the game very well. Control is super tight and responsive, Story is simply but unique in it's own way! Gameply is fun and addicting! There isn't a game out that even comes close to this game. side not: I still play this game til this day! I finding myself just exploring the wonderful art in this game. Overall: 5 OUTTA 5 STARS (A MUST HAVE FOR ALL PS2 OWNER!)

4 Star Review   By member headchef - Jul 4, 2005

Strengths: + artistic design and layout of levels + lots of interactivity/level of immersion

Weakness: - low res graphics

Ico is like no game out there and just from the intro and beginning stage, you'll realize that a lot of time and effort went into this game. Unlike other games, Ico's levels are cleverly designed. The level of detail is inspiring and the developers really worked hard to meld all the puzzles into this small virtual world. For example early in the game, you must get Ico to the top of a tower, but part of the stairs has collapsed. First thought was to try and jump over the gap but after a few tries I realized I wouldn't be able to make it. Then I noticed an open window and surprisingly enough you could climb up to it and out. It's this type of interactivity in the game where you have to immerse yourself into the game world that makes Ico refreshing. Whereas other games will just map out what you have to do (and a plain open window would just be like beautiful wallpaper) in Ico everything seems to have a purpose. In this sense, it could be seen as a weakness but I'm not sure if it's the game's fault or the gamer's.

5 Star Review   By member sabin23 - Jun 30, 2005

Strengths: Visuals, music, great atmosphere, great puzzles.

Weakness: Too short, controls could be a tad tighter.

I just love the visual look of this game. These are the type of games that demonstrate how far video games have come in terms of becoming a true art form. The game itself plays somewhat like Zelda (obviously not as good) but even to this day, it still ranks as one of the best action adventure game. The puzzles are challenging and very inventive. The graphics in ICO are just mind blowing and will create a sense of this surrealistic reality and fantasy. Also, the sound really conveys this haunting and sometimes creepy atmosphere. You have to lead this girl around for most of the game. While it's annoying sometimes to drag her along (sometimes she gets in your way or refuses to come along), it's a very interesting and innovative play mechanic. It was such a great innovation, Nintendo actually ripped off the concept for one dungeon in Zelda Wind Waker. I think that says it all already - when Nintendo copies your ideas, you must be doing something right! The only weakness is the relative legnth of the game, around 10 hours for the average gamer to beat. I only wish this game would go on forever but it was great while it lasted.

5 Star Review   By member bauerpower - Jun 28, 2005

Strengths: great story, great puzzles, very atmospheric, good use of ambient soundtrack

Weakness: no replayability, graphics are a bit low res

ICO is a very good puzzle/adventure game. It reminded me a lot of Prince of Persia in a way (at least before Prince of Persia Sands of Time came out). You are ICO, and the objective of the game is to save a young girl from a castle. The animations are very good in this game. The story is very good too, although it doesnt just present the story directly to you in cutscenes. In fact, some of the dialogue is foreign and not understandable, forcing the player the think about what is going on. This game is more like a piece of art in the way the story is crafted. The game may not be for everyone as the gameplay action might get tedious to a few people. The story and atmosphere is what wins the gamers in this game. The ending alone will guarantee you to think about the game and how great it was.

Strengths: Amazing imersion, unique gameplay, 'outside the box' type of puzzles

Weakness: more focused on progression than unlocking anything, but not really a weak point

If you would like to relive your childhood in an epic setting of exploration, look no further than Ico. It focuses on a young boy discovering the connection between an islend an a mysteriouse girl, whom somwhow has a connection to the island. At the same time he is trying to escape the island and take the girl alogn with him. For an amazing level of immersion, you really feel like you are the kid in the game as the level of interaction he has around the island is much like how a young adventurouse kid would be. Throw in amazing visuals, mind bendingly good puzzles, and the most realistic enviormental sounds around and you got a AAA title. Highly recommended.

Strengths: Beautiful graphics, excellent gameplay.

Weakness: Some might find ICO boring.

ICO has been one of my favorite games for a while now. Although not the most technically impressive, the graphics in ICO are some of the most beautifully done and artistic that I've seen. I found the gameplay to be great, leading someone around who is basically helpless on her own is not only innovative but works very well in this case. Overall a great adventure game that everyone should at least try, you might just find it to be one of the best games you've played. Also you can find this for next to nothing so why not give it a try.

Strengths: Fantastic visuals. Wonderful story. Unique, one-of-a-kind video game experience.

Weakness: It's a "blue bottom" CD game so some PS2s may have trouble playing it.

Ico is one of the most under-rated games for the PS2. All the good things people say about this game are true. There really is not a bad thing to say about it. It is a terrific game where you play the role of an outcast boy who must rescue a captive girl. The game takes place inside of a huge castle that acts as sort of a huge puzzle. Along the way you must battle evil shadowy figures and protect the girl. There is lots of jumping and climbing to go along with all the exploring you will do in the game. You are guaranteed to fall in love with this game. It is a must buy for anyone who loves a good action/adventure game with an excellent story.

Strengths: A great, atmospheric adventure. Great story, puzzles, and... feeling.

Weakness: A little short.

Ico is a classic adventure game, through and through. There's some combat thrown in for good measure, but really this is about solving puzzles to advance a story. The thing that sets ICO apart is its atmosphere, its mood. The game just exudes a feeling like no other game, a feeling that can't really be described. It's short, but totally worth one playthrough.

4 Star Review   By member FOnewearl - May 8, 2005

Strengths: Unique adventure game, very solid presentation

Weakness: Short

ICO is an action adventure game that has a stronger focus on the puzzles than the action. Thoughout the game you will have to progress while also leading along a princesses named Jorda. The trick is that she is not as skillfull as you so you may have to figure out a different way for her to get from point A to point B as you. The only major compliant one would probably have with ICO is that it is short but now that it's been out for afew years it cam be found relatively cheap at any place that has it. I would recommend it to anyone that likes adventures games ranging from Price of Persia & Out of This World to the old LucasArts games or any true gamer!

Strengths: Jaw-dropping graphics and sound, enthralling story, inventive gameplay, intelligent puzzles

Ico remains as one of the best Playstation 2 games of all time. The story is of a boy who, being born with horns, is cast out from his home and locked into a tower. In that tower, he finds Yorda, who is captured by shadow creatures. Ico frees her from the shadows, and then game starts from there. The graphics in the game are some of the best in the PS2 lineup, showing a beautifully rendered world, full of little subtle touches and cues. The sounds and music are equally stunning, further enhancing the world around Ico and Yorda. The puzzles are quite intelligently designed, as they're not so simple to figure out, mainly because Yorda can't travel most of the places that Ico can, and they must stay together. The combat against the shadows is done well. too. Ico is a must-have for any PS2 owner. No question, no excuse, it's a must-have for the whole interactive game world it creates.

4 Star Review   By member systemshocker - Nov 7, 2004

Strengths: These people know how to give you a good time, and make you think.

Weakness: PS2 graphics, and it's nothing original. Also some funky camera angles.

Some games are never completely flawless. This one is flawless most of the time and it gives such a high level of emersiveness that it makes you feel like you are back in the third grade again being bullied for no good reason. This is not a game that makes you very happy. It has a happy ending though.
