5 Star Review  GameZone - Aug 3, 2004

One morning, the good folk at Sega Sports awoke and realized that they were sick of being second. EA Sports dominated sales in the sports videogame genre and Sega is simply tired of it. They soon hear that several competitors are dropping their football games this year, choosing to forgo this year to catch up to both Sega and EA. Hooray! They also hear that EA is negating the biggest advantage Sega had last year – they’re going to support Xbox Live. Boo! With a chance to scoop up some loyal NFL Fever fans and a desperate need to gain an edge on EA’s Madden series, Sega decided to go for it on fourth and long and made a gutsy call – slapping a mere twenty dollar price tag on their quality game.

4.5 Star Review  GameSpy - Jul 30, 2004

We all love bargains, right? Any time you can get a quality product at a good price, you can walk away from the deal happy. It was no surprise, then, that gamers everywhere were overjoyed when Sega announced that the latest version of their popular football franchise, ESPN NFL 2K5 would be released for a piddling $19.95. There were some grumblings that perhaps the game wasn't as good as previous years, or that Sega was trying to move into the bargain game section. Thankfully, this is not the case, and gamers will be getting a lot of bang for their buck this year.

5 Star Review  IGN.com - Jul 16, 2004

There has never been a better $20 game than ESPN NFL 2K5. End of story. For the price of a two-week rental, you can buy a game that is every bit as deep, feature-packed and addictively playable as Madden. For the price of a night at the movies, you can own a game with great graphics, realistic football action, compelling and revolutionary sports gaming concepts, and an extensive online head-to-head experience. Such value is difficult to come by in the expensive world of console video games, but value is just one of the things that make this year's installment so special.

Strengths: Graphics, Sound, Features, and the whole game

Weakness: Music (excluding custom soundtracks)

You can be any NFL team and you can create your own teams and players. You also get your own "Crib" and can customize it and buy accessories with "Crib Credits". There is also a Franchise mode where it's basically all custom. It's a very fun game! A great feature in the game is after you complete a season another season starts! It's a fun game. Another thing is there are cheats for it in case your a lazy type and likes cheats. Overall if you like football you'll love this game and it will have you glued to the remote control for hours.

5 Star Review   By member jeffblack12 - Aug 29, 2005

Strengths: equal to or better than madden for a fraction of the price

Weakness: gameplay takes a little getting used to

This game is by far a better value than Madden. It has all the polish in the gameplay, all the modes and then some, some interesting modes in its own right (ie the Crib and first person) and great graphics to boot, all for $20, less than half of the price of Madden. This is a great game wrapped up in a cheap package, and everyone should buy this to encourage more developers to price their games cheaply.

5 Star Review   By member silentassassin47 - Jul 21, 2005

Strengths: Gameplay, Graphics, Custom Stadium Music, Crib Mode, Customizable Sliders

Weakness: Receiver tend to drop the ball a lot, Crowd can be a little off

The NFL 2K series has always been solid throughout the years. It can be argued that it has been a much better game than Madden. This year, not only does it crush Madden 05, but is much cheaper. ESPN NFL 2K5 is the best football game to date. It is just plain amazing how great this game is. It is truly a football fan dream come true. The gameplay is fantastic. It simple enough that a casual gamer can play it; yet sophiscated and deep too the point that a hardcore football gamer can play it forever. In addition to the gameplay, Sega has enable you to be able to create your own custom stadium music. So you have it playing a 50 Cent track after ever touchdown, sack, turnover, etc. Another amazing addition is the halftime and postgame show. The halftime and postgame show replays all the big plays of the game--such as touchdowns and turnovers. This is able to happen because every single play is saved onto your harddrive. So after the game you can go back and replay any play you like. In conclusion, ESPN NFL 2K5 is a must buy for all gamers who enjoys football. Not only is the gameplay, graphics, sound and music off the hook; but all the extra stuff is awesome. Cribs Mode will have you unlocking new stuff for weeks. VIP is an awesome feature that record all a user's gameplay tendencies. And the francise mode is pretty cool. So go out and pick this game up.

Strengths: Slick ESPN presentation, cheap $20 MSRP, great graphics, custom soundtracks, 16:9, 480p.

Weakness: Feels less like simulation and more like an arcade game, NOT Madden.

Another year, another debate about which football game is better. I think this is the first year that Visual Concepts has given Madden a good run for their money. In many ways, ESPN is superior to Madden and I feel most casual football fans will enjoy this game more because it's so much more accessible and easier to pick up and play. While there a lot of animations, they don't seem to link together well and players just suddenly skip to their next movement on the field. Despite all the positives, I would have to say Madden has more solid gameplay and their Franchise mode is light years beyond ESPN. But given the fact that this game retails at such a low price, it'd be hard for football nuts to to resist buying both ESPN and Madden!

Strengths: Great price ($20!!), great graphics for a football game, great gameplay, XBOX LIVE, cool Half Time presentation, custom soundtracks

Weakness: Commentary can get annoying because they repeat the same things over and over

This year Sega did the extraordinary thing every sports fan didn't thought could happen, they released a game for just $20!! ESPN NFL 2K5 is great in every way! Great price, great graphics, great gameplay, great Xbox Live play, and a very cool Half Time presentation! There are some weak points, such as the commentary can get annoying at some times because they repeat the same things over and over. Overall, I think this is a great game even for the price of $20! Overall: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ESPECIALLY FOR $20

Strengths: Realistic Gameplay. Looks at all aspects of the NFL in Depth. Retail price of $20. Great Multiplayer.

NFL 2k5 is a great, great NFL game. First, it has realistic gameplay that's still fun. There's a ton you can do both in the game and outside of it. Be it running a whole season, playing an individual game, or acting as a GM. Also, the AI is good in the game. But the game really shines in its Xbox live component. It is truly a great game to play Xbox live. Also, I think that Sega does a better job making this game live enabled than Madden. Buy this Game ASAP. You can find it for $15 and at some places as little as $10 when it is on sale.

4 Star Review   By member vherub - Dec 20, 2004

Strengths: Great graphics, solid gameplay, good online component

Weakness: offense can be exploited by moving d at the line before snap; multiple user profiles difficult to switch between

Having played both Madden and NFL 2k5, I found ESPN's game to be the preferred starter. Ultimately it comes down to individual preference, but for me I liked the play selecting screens, holding down the turbo to charge (and tapping the button for speed bursts), and the overall ESPN presentation is slicker. I don't think you would go wrong with either one, but 2k5 is at the much more competitive price. With that being said, the online component of the game is great, as the lobby is easy to setup and find games. As always with online play, you get people who drop games, but there is a 5 minute timer now so someone cannot just pause the game and force you to drop out (as it was in the past). There are other options such as franchise modes, replaying historic games/drives during games and crib points. You accumulate points from playing games, reaching certain stat levels and so on, which you use to then buy items for your imaginary house. I did not get too much into it, but there are a ton of items to get from posters to bobble head dolls, and you have a trophy room to check out your accomplishments. This is also where you can accept challenges from the game to play against if someone calls you up. What I did not like was if you have multiple profiles, say two or more people want to keep their own name/record/crib points, switching back and forth is difficult and playing head to head saving the results for both profiles is confusing. Also, in the game itself, and most any football game, certain plays can be done over and over again because the game is not setup to handle them as well, such as moving a defensive lineman before the snap to better outmaneuver the oline. But these are minor issues and overall the game is very enjoyable.

Strengths: The graphics, the graphics, the graphics. The entire game is great. I love the CRIB option and hey TO is the man on this game. Can you say better than Madden!

Weakness: None that I have seen so far. Oh yeah, I haven't found the save feature yet.

There is nothing more that I can really say about this game. I went to go get Madden 2005 and the guy at Target told me about ESPN for only half the price. I have played Madden 2005 before and I can honestly say that this game is as good or better. And for only $20.00. A STEAL!!!

Strengths: Buying this game for only $20 seems like a crime, great graphics and sound, plenty of gameplay modes, great online support, great gameplay

Weakness: None apparent

ESPN NFL 2K5 packs in so much in the way of visuals, sound and gameplay that buying it at $20 seems like stealing. The graphics and sound easily match any other title, from the well-done announcer commentary and sound effects, great character animations, especially with the view from the helmet cam, which adds into the realism. The passing and running game on offense are balanced well against the defense, so it adds up to play well on either side of the ball. The computer plays a good enough game to keep interest and not appear to be outthinking the humans all the time and dominating play. The online play is some of the best aspects of the game, showing great polish and ease of use. Getting into an online game is simple and it's truly the main reason to get this title. The online play shines, without question. All of these great features make this title easily worth the $50 retail price competing prices have. Being at $20, it makes the whole package a bargain that seems almost criminal to buy. For any football fan, it's imperative to pick up this game. For a sports fan, same answer. Go get this game.

Strengths: Only $20. Awesome graphics, sound, and gameplay.

Weakness: Default difficulty too easy.

This is far and away the best football game available. The graphics and animations are way better than last year's version and that game looked superb. The players look and move naturally. The running game is very realistic and the passing game feels just right. Even playing defense is a blast. The default difficulty is set so you can get used to the game. Once you've played a few times, the higher difficulties present great challenge. The only complaint is that there are a lot of interceptions. This can be cured by changing the custom "sliders" to have fewer. You can customize the stadium music with your ripped CDs and the announcing is done very well. This is the best all around football game I've played and for only $20 it's an incredible buy.
