Death by Degrees
3 Star Review  GameZone - Feb 16, 2005

Virtua Fighter has had single-player offshoots. Mortal Kombat had two, with another on the way. Aside from mini-games within the recent Tekken games, Namco kept their beloved fighting game franchise a multiplayer experience only. You can always play solo, but every fighting fan knows that the real way to play a fighting game is with friends who can watch you gloat. "Ha-ha! Take that, suckers!" Death by Degrees marks the first time that Namco has left the head-to-head experience behind. Unfortunately for us, it could be there last.

Death by Waiting
2 Star Review   By member dafunkk12 - Mar 31, 2006

Strengths: Clothing damage, costume changes, x-ray scenes

Weakness: Loading, voice acting, repetitive gameplay

Beat-'em-up games often tend to surround the player with enemies--a cheap maneuver that was originally intended to drain more quarters from the player during the olden days of arcades. Death By Degrees addresses this "gameplay mechanic" by allowing the player to attack in 360 degrees simply by flicking the joystick in the direction of their opponent. Aside from physical attacks, you can also equip guns and swords, but these weapons don't seem to be anymore deadly than fighting without them. Fighting is spiced up with occasional x-ray vision. If you attack an enemy with a Critical Strike, you will see an x-ray view of their bones shattering. What really ruins the experience is noticable loading. Even selecting things in the menu isn't as immediate as it should be! And because you'll be exploring a lot, you'll encounter plenty of long loads when moving between areas.

Deat by Degrees May Cause Death by Boredom
2 Star Review   By member ragtop70 - Mar 22, 2006

Strengths: It includes a Tekken 5 demo disk.

Weakness: Honestly, everything about this game is weak. The combat system is terrible. Environments are not interactive. The list goes on and on.

The selling point of Death By Degrees is Nina Williams of Tekken "fame." If ogling an attractive virtual female is your thing, this game may be for you. If you are looking for an adventure game that includes Tekken's deep combat and characters, you'll be sorely disappointed. The main problem I have with this game is the way combat is oversimplified. I would assume buyers of this game are fans of the Tekken series and, therefore, are able to perform moves using more than the left analog stick. Unfortunately, Namco apparently thinks otherwise. If there is a bad guy to your left, push left to attack him. If he's on the right, push right etc. You would also expect destructive environments or some form of interaction with your surroundings, but you won't get it in this game. The highlight of this game, for some of you, will be the fact that Nina's clothing gets slowly ripped and torn away as she takes damage. Don't get me wrong, there is no nudity, this is just supposed to be an advanced way of showing character damage. I can think of no group of people to whom I recommend this game at any price.

Death by Degrees
3 Star Review   By member Pookymeister - Mar 3, 2006

Strengths: Graphics are very crisp and detailed Decent beat em up Hot babe anyone?

Weakness: Gameplay is lacking Storyline is bad Nothing new here, and really has nothing to do with Tekken besides the main character

Definitely not an A+ title here, but it could have been. The Tekken franchise is one of the better 3d fighters out there today. And the character Nina is one of the babes available to play in the game. She heads this beatemup title up. Looking at the game front and back cover - it looks like it might have potential. But it is really just a tease. The controls for the game are really hard to master, and most people will get too flustered to continue. And there really isn't a good reason to continue. There is nothing original here, and only real fans of Tekken need buy this. However, if you can pick it up for $10 or less, it might be worth a few hours of play time.

Generic Fighter with clunky controls
3 Star Review   By member juice5000 - Mar 2, 2006

Strengths: Graphics and sound aren't to bad but are overshadowed by other problems.

Weakness: The controls are by far the weakest part of the game along with the story and level setup.

Nina Williams from the Tekken series stars here as a generic gaming beauty to target the young male. Hey a game with a hot girl beating people up can't be that bad right? Wrong. If they spent more time fleshing out the combat system and game control with maybe a new unique feature thrown in for the awe effect I think we all would have thought differently about this game. The game isn't that hard but the save points are in terrible places. I encountered slow down in different places but know people that didn't see much of any slowdown. They problay didn't play it very long, and neither will most people. Not much replay value but at 5 or 10 bucks almost anything can look good in your collection. So buy this at a discount or not at all.

An idea for a fighting system gone wrong
2 Star Review   By member FOnewearl - Feb 21, 2006

Strengths: Graphics

Weakness: Analog driven combat, repetative nature

Death by Degrees is an action adventure type game that stars Nina from the Tekken franchise and while one would think that it could have been something good it tries something new and seems to fall short in the execution of what does or could have made a fun action game. The fighting system consist of using your analog sticks to do almost everything. You use your left analog stick to move and dodge while you use the right analog to attack and block. Having these different tasks on the same analog sticks can make things difficult as it can be easy to mistakingly do the wrong thing, they could have set it up so that you use some of the other buttons on the controller to do some of these things as to make the controls better. Outside of combat gameplay will also have you doing alot of things similar to adventure games like Resident Evil such as finding keys to use and random items that you may find somewhere that may have uses like something you find may fit somewhere in order to open up something new to progress though the game. It can be slow and fairly tedious mixing this in with an action game and when the constant loading is factored in it just slows down the game even more. I would suggest renting Death by Degrees as while it was a good idea it didn't turn out as well as Namco & Tekken fans alike would have (surely) hoped for.

2 Star Review   By member MeOlMe - Feb 5, 2006

Strengths: cheap game bought from toysr us.

Weakness: cheap game.

Death by Degrees is a action/adventure game for PS2. Bought it around xmas for under $10. For a cheap game, it was OK. Don't spend more than $10 on it. The controls are impossible to use. It's like the people who developed this game intentionally wanted to make it a chore for gamers.

Tekken's Nina Williams in a weak, uninspired spinoff. .
3 Star Review   By member MaxBiaggi2 - Jan 4, 2006

Strengths: Nice FMV cinemas, solid graphics, interesting storyline, Tekken 5 demo disc included

Weakness: Loose controls, weak combat system, camera issues, frustrating difficulty, uninspired gameplay

The Tekken series of games has continued to enjoy critical and commercial success over the years, so it was only a matter of time before Namco tried to leverage the Tekken name and characters with side-story adventures like this. Unfortunately, Death by Degrees doesn't offer any of the award-winning one-on-one combat that the Tekken series is known for. What you get instead is Tekken character Nina Williams in an uninspired 3D beat-em-up adventure. While the high-quality graphics generally keep things looking good, the loose and frustrating controls make actually playing the game more work than fun. The camera only adds to the trouble at times by not showing you all of the bad guys attacking you from various directions. Hardcore Tekken fans will probably want to try Death by Degrees despite its obvious flaws, but I'd recommend against paying any more than $15 for it. You won't have as much fun with this as you will with any of the older Tekken games.

Strengths: Nina from Tekken. Gorgeous.

Weakness: Bad control.

Nina, one of the characters from Tekken series of Namco, is the only reason why I bought this game. Graphic is good, as many other games by Namco. With respect to controll, there are a lot to be improved. I miss Nina in Tekken.

Death by Degrees would have been a good game on PSX. The game mechanics are outdated as are the rewards for beating the game. This game has few redeaming factors and even Nina Williams' fans will be disappointed. I have a feeling there will not be a sequel to this game because it only accomplishes putting the final nail into the coffin of this franchise.

Death by Degrees
2 Star Review   By member groundskeeperjbl - Dec 22, 2005

Strengths: Graphics are nice for a PS2 game.

Weakness: Combat system can be difficult at times. Camera could have been much better.

The combat system had a lot of weird controller types involved. This made some of the combat hard and lead me toward a tendency to use button mashing instead of really trying to pull off a more advanced move. With more playing time I could probably get the hang of it but the story and game play doesn't make me confident that it is one I care to master. All in all a rentable game but beware of buying unless you find it at a good price.

2 Star Review   By member indy2029 - Dec 22, 2005

Strengths: Great graphics, simple gameplay, and hot heroine!

Weakness: Superficial gameplay. Not very fun in long term.

This game may entice Tekken fans, but it's simply a beat em up. The graphics are nice and Nina Williams is so hot as a title character, but this game doesn't have enough meat in it's bones to keep gamers gaming in the long run. Save up for Tekken 5 instead.

Another Failed Spin-Off
2 Star Review   By member monsoonman - Oct 23, 2005

Strengths: +Game has great graphics +Great Cut scenes +1 target weak points/finishing move +Comes with playable Tekken 5 Demo

Weakness: -Poor control -Bad voice acting -Bad storyline -Not all that intersting

Death By Degrees is a decent game. The graphics are great for a PS2 game, as well as the cut scenes. The game also comes bundled with a short Tekken playable 5 demo. However the bad far out weights the good. The games controls are horrible. Fighting is controlled with the the right analog stick, which makes it hard to target enemies. And that can be a problem since you'll usually be surrounded by quite a few baddies. The storyline was nothing spectacular, and the voice acting in this game was pretty bad. Everything also seemed pretty linear. If you are a Tekken fan I'd recommend the game, otherwise stay away.

DEATH by DEGREES...OR... DEATH by the Spin-Off ???
1 Star Review   By member Spoon_Si - Sep 28, 2005

Strengths: Nina Williams is Hot... thats It...

Weakness: Gameplay, Camera, Chessy Story, Crappy fighting moves... Slow paced game...

Death by Degrees is spin-off game from the Famous Tekken series. Like it or Hate it... Tekken is one of the most popular 3-D fighting game series... How can they do wrong? Well.... Death by Degrees... this is game so bad... it's seem like a way to milk fans of the series for it's worth. Pros: Some nice CG movies & Nina williams running around in skimpy out-fits... Cons: Music, Story, Gameplay, game moves along too slow for anybody to stay interested in. Just about almost everything in this game is Bad... Overall: 1 OUTTA 5 STARS

Looks good, but handles like jackhammer set on high.
2 Star Review   By member JDreborn - Sep 20, 2005

Strengths: Graphics, lots of gadgets/weapons/special moves, CG is nice, and itsw Nina in her own game.

Weakness: Controls are terrible.

Death by Degrees is a action/adventure game for PS2. You play as Nina Williams from the Tekken series. You are part of the CIA and are working with MI6 to investigate some wrong doing going on this cruise ship. The game looks good, sounds well, but controls need a huge overhaul. You control the characters attacks with the right analog stick, which is a chore and doesn't respond to well. The controls make this game 100 times harder than it should be. Just be prepared to struggle through the game due to the controls. I give the game 2 stars, it was a nice attempt and hopefully this won't stop Namco from making solo games for their other fighters.

Cliche by degrees
1 Star Review   By member fever - Sep 8, 2005

Strengths: Excellent and detailed character models, good animation

Weakness: Boring and difficult gameplay with terrible controls.

This game should only be played by hard-core Tekken fans, just dont expect too much fun. The game has superb graphics and some really cool effects but the controls are very bad and the combat can be very unforgiving. The story is also very cliche, and the game does not do anything that has not been done before, except the 360 combat system that is too hard to use and too complex.

nothing great
2 Star Review   By member Warner1281 - Aug 10, 2005

Strengths: Nina from Tekken

Weakness: The game just isn't that good

Being a fan of the Tekken series, I immediately recognized Nina and picked up this game. Once I started playing I realized I didn't much like it. It's nothing like Tekken (obviously or they would've called it Tekken-Nina). The gameplay is kind of boring and there's not much to it.

Death by Degrees
2 Star Review   By member jjz203 - Aug 9, 2005

Strengths: Namco licensed Tekken hotty goes solo. Graphics are great and the CG cutscenes are top notch... it's scary how good Nina looks.

Weakness: Fighting can be frustrating and weird. The game itself is rather boring and not much to do in a boring world. The controls are just bad.

I bought this game after seeing the trailers and clips thinking "this is a tekken spin off, how bad can it be?" And boy was I proven wrong. Though the game looks SO good from the start, once you start playing the game, you realize how bad it is right away. The controls suck and the fighting is nothing close to the Tekken games. The exploring isn't fun nor is the actual fighting to be done against the bad guys. In the end, after playing a few hours, I find myself very frustrated at this game. If it weren't for the beautiful cg and Nina character model, I would have traded this in a while ago.

Strengths: good graphic, excellent story

Weakness: hard to control the ppl to fight

I like this game, given the overall quantity namco gives, the demo of tekken 5 is also good. The only dificient is that the control of nina is kind of poor. Who knows
