Jade Empire
5 Star Review  GameZone - Apr 11, 2005

When it was announced last year that BioWare was not going to be developing the sequel to their game of the year smash hit Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, more than a few gamers took some worried notice. Fortunately, KOTOR II turned out to be a great game that more than did justice to its predecessor. When it was revealed that BioWare was instead going to work on an ancient China themed action-RPG, many more gamers began to worry whether or not the game would be up to snuff and expectations were running quite high. However, Jade Empire is finally here and the results are nothing short of astounding.

JADE EMPIRE
5 Star Review   By member warlion - Jun 26, 2009

Strengths: awesome story and voice acting

Weakness: shallow combat system, short game relative to other RPGs

JADE EMPIRE is an RPG/action game for the xbox. Unlike many RPGs , the action is in real time and not turn based, making the battles more dynamic and exciting. If u have played the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games, u will fit right in w/ this one. U pick from a cast of different characters, who have their own unique background stories such as fighting to seek greater honor or for some others, seeking revenge. The Limited Edition version includes a warrior monk character that uses a staff in combat. Dialogue and story in this game are very top notch; it almost plays like a well written Asian kung fu movie. U will fight against demons and other evil warriors and will recruit other allies along ur journey. U can also decide whether to be good or evil , and depending on ur choices, will affect the outcome of the story, and also the lives of ur allies. Bioware did a great job on this game, so I really recommend buying it.

Intro to RPGs
4 Star Review   By member jngx80 - Jun 14, 2008

Strengths: graphics, story/script, real time combat

Weakness: the combat is too simple

Jade Empire is a perfect blend of action and rpg elements. Unlike many rpgs, including Bioware's Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire's combat isn't turn based or menu driven. Because of this the game flows much better and plays like a standard action game; you run up to enemies and tap buttons to punch or evade. Throughout the course of the game, your character will learn different styles of martial arts which is pretty cool. Unfortunately no matter what style you use there's only one standard attack, a charge attack, and one combo. As you can expect, with only 3 attacks, the fighting can get repetitive and too easy. The story is intriguing, graphics look great, conversations in the game are interactive allowing the player to pick their own response from a set of replies. If Bioware had added more moves for the combat I would've given this game a 5 out of 5.

Jade Empire: Limited Edition (resubmitted review from October '07)
4 Star Review   By member neschamp - Nov 30, 2007

Strengths: Really well made game all around.

Weakness: Relatively short for an RPG, final playtime ends up being around 20 to 30 hours.

Jade Empire is Canadian developer Bioware's second role playing game offering for the Microsoft Xbox. The first RPG offering was the hit Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I expected Jade Empire to be a great deal like KOTOR, and it ended up having a lot of similarities with one major difference. It has a real time combat system that was a welcome change in game design from Bioware's previous effort. It made me feel a lot more involved in the game than the traditional turn based systems found in most RPGs. The storyline is strong and kept my attention throughout. There are also a number of side quests that add to the main storyline and help flesh out the game world. The "Limited Edition" version of the game included a second disc that contained an extra playable character.

Jade Empire: Limited Edition
5 Star Review   By member galvatron2k1 - Jan 11, 2006

Strengths: Open-ended game play, engaging storyline, RPG style action, controls, voice acting

From the makers of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series, comes a totally new adventure called Jade Empire. The game resembles the Star Wars: KOTOR series in that it gives you choices during certain situations that mold your character into more of a hero or a villain. The game offers two different paths to take, the way of the open palm or the way of the closed fist. The decisions that you make ultimately affect your hero’s point of view. Also, the decisions that you will make are not as clear cut as you would think (for example, save a child and lose the lives of many or save the lives of many and send the child to certain death). The game play is similar to Star Wars: KOTOR, as you level up as you fight through hoards of enemies in real time. You also learn many different fighting styles and techniques throughout the game. The controls are excellent as well are the in-game music and the voice acting. This is truly a great game. I highly recommend it.

Strengths: Amazing storyline, great graphics, sound and voice acting, well-done RPG system, bonus character in LE version

Weakness: None apparent

Jade Empire: Limited Edition is an RPG game set in ancient China. The storyline involves the quest against an evil force, involving numerous characters and plot devices. The graphics look great, the sound effects and music are top-notch, and the voice acting is great. The RPG system is done in real time, with great martial arts action. In the LE version, another character is available for replay. RPG fans must get this game.

Jade Empire
5 Star Review   By member StashEX - Aug 26, 2005

Strengths: Excellent battle system, great storyline

Weakness: Combat could have used bit of tweaking

Bioware delivers another excellent rpg with Jade Empire. I loved almost everything about the game. It's only about 20 hours in length, which turns off some but that just made me wanna replay the game with a different character. The story line is beautifully written and the combat system is something that is actually fun. It plays out in real time and could be described as a beat em up with magic'n'stats. I looked forward too getting into battles instead of dreading them, something that happens too often in most rpgs. Some complaints: combat can get too button mashy. I have no problem with mashing buttons but Bioware could have designed battles to have more emphasis on using all your skills more often to survive. And in typical Bioware fashion, expect to find lots of bugs and glitches. Don't let those stop you from enjoying what is possibly the best rpg of 2005. Jade Empre is dropping fast and I just hope it didn't flop since it deserves a sequel.

Fight Fight Fight
5 Star Review   By member DirtyPudding - Aug 7, 2005

Strengths: Awesome story and characters Excellent audio and voicework. Fun fighting system.

Weakness: Main story is short but you will want to play it again.

Jade Empire is Bioware's latest RPG for the Xbox. The story takes place in a mythical chinese world where demons and ghosts roam the land. As the main character, you are a top class martial arts student who must find out about his or her past. The fighting system is very fun in this game since it gives you complete control over your character. You can use weapons and magic as well. All of the characters in this game are interesting and really make you want to play the game. The voice acting of the characters is also some of the best you will hear in a video game. The game is short but sweet. You will need to play it a second time to see all there is to see. This one of the best games for the Xbox and any fan of video games in general should check it out. A++

Weakness: English doesn't fit the mood of the game

Jade Empire is an action RPG from Bioware, the makers of KOTOK. This game carries over the the amazing story, voice acting, and graphics. The battle system this time is much better, since it is real time. The replay value is huge becase you can chose how you want to add through out the game. My only complain is that English doesnt really fit the Eastern setting.

Strengths: Very Different! Good Action Battle System! Realistic Fighting style! Bright Clear Graphic! Extra Bonus compare the the regular edition!

Weakness: Story gets Boring and moves very slow pace! Too many stupid Side Quest!

Well I got my Hards on the Limited edition Version of this Game. I'll list whats is the extra of the limited edition. Extras in Limited edition: The limited edition is the same price as the regular version (so there no reason not to get it!), Nice Foil DVD cover, 1 Addtional Downloadable character to play the whole game through again, Some Playable Demo, A Nice G4TV making of the game Video! Original Review: After hearing about this game for the past year, I can't help but diving into the hype! Part of me was expecting something as epic as Final Fantasy & Star Ocean games, Another part is it could up like Fable. I have spent close to over 40 hours on this game. I'm not disappointed like I was with Fable but it falls along the line of above average RPG. Pros: Lots! and Lots! of voice acting! and they are pretty well done! Battle system is pretty cool, but gets old after a while, Graphic is just simply amazing to look at! Fighting moves is motion capture so it's as realistic as it comes. Cons: They try to make this game as long as possible, so there is a bunch of pointless side quest, story will run dry rite in the middle of the game (might turn some player to quit). Overall: *** 4 OUTTA 5 STARS *** There is a Limited edition package of the game, so I'll picking up this version as well to collect.

5 Star Review   By member Az986 - Jul 2, 2005

Strengths: Great story, good graphics, awesome fighting system

Weakness: A little short for an RPG (20-25 hours)

Jade Empire is probaly the Xbox's best RPG. Great story, amazing fighting system, memorable characthers, tons of side quests, what else could you ask for ? Well one thing is that its a little to short, it would have been nice if it was another 10-15 hours but it was a fun trip while it lasted. Like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, (Bioware's other Xbox RPG) what you choose to say to people effects how they treat you. You can choose good or bad or a little of both when you feel like it. This greatly enhances the replayability of the game. If you own an Xbox and like RPG's do yourself a favor and pick this game up, you wont be disappointed.

5 Star Review   By member sabin23 - Jun 30, 2005

Strengths: Great graphics and sound, freedom to play in a variety of ways, fun fighting mechanics, lots of replay.

Weakness: Too short, backgrounds not interactive enough, Limited Edition version has an extra character.

After developing the great Star Wars: KOTR, Bioware decided to move on create an original game of their own. What we have here is a game that shares many of the same attributes that made a game like KOTR so great but also features new elements. One of those new features was the addition of real time fighting. You can choose from a variety of different martial arts skills and gradually build up your skills as the game progresses. The graphics are gorgeous although I wish they were more interactive. It almost seems like most of the world is just a bunch or prerenders. The soundtrack is great and has that Asian flare to it. The voice acting is plentiful and quite good. While the story is good, it isn't great. Another flaw is that the game ends way too soon. Bioware claims they did this on purpose in order to increase the replayability but I believe they just ran out of time and had to cut a lot elements (or maybe they're saving them for the Xbox 360 version). The great thing about the Limited Edition is that you have the option of an additional character not featured in the regular version. It's definitely worth picking the LE just for this extra feature.

5 Star Review   By member road3283 - May 24, 2005

Strengths: Great story and nice blend of action and rpg.

Weakness: Might be too short and shallow for veteran Rpg'ers. Occasional, slight dips in the framerate.

Jade Empire is set in a fantasy world based on ancient China and is an excellent blend of martial arts and mythical adventures. Developer Bioware is one of the finest story telling studios around and their latest effort will not disappoint. The story immerses you in your quest and it is filled with charismatic characters, beautiful environments, and epic battles. Best of all your decisions and actions will determine the final outcome due to the game's multiple endings. The game uses an innovative real-time combat system that captures the feel of a Kung Fu film as you mix styles and moves to take out your enemies. The controls are fluid and intuitive making it easy for anyone to pick up, yet still allows for deeper mastery as you progress. The Rpg elements consist of exploring the land, talking to locals, and levelling up. With experience you'll be able to customize your characters abilities and increase their proficiency and effectiveness with the different fighting styles. While the game is a great blend of action and rpg, hardcore rpg players might find the game to shallow and short. However, I found it to make for a streamlined epic without any fluff or filler. Even with its minor flaws the game is a great buy. With the replay value you'll definitely get the most out of your money. Also, the game has solid production values with good voice acting and great graphics. Overall, this is a great game and in the end it's just a lot of fun to play.
