Description
Players who log in to this corner of the Star Wars universe find live-action battle against like-minded gamers and fans from around the country. Likely inspired to some extent by Digital Illusions' successful Battlefield series, this LucasArts shooter features the same style of fast-paced, large-scale, multiplayer warfare, but is set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Instead of Axis versus Allies, or the United States fighting North Vietnam, Imperial Stormtroopers, and separatist droids face off against rebel commandos and clone army soldiers in Star Wars: Battlefront. The battlegrounds featured in the game are intended to highlight the most memorable conflicts from all six Star Wars films, and offer a dozen different environments on ten famous planets, including Hoth, Endor, Tatooine, and Kamino. In many locations, a selection of drivable vehicles can be found, such as speeder bikes, Imperial walkers, and X-Wing fighters, and these may turn the battle in favor of the soldiers who can put them to best use. The game can be played from either a first- or third-person perspective, and offers split-screen multiplayer modes for consoles without Internet connections. At least 16 players can battle together online, and three single-player modes are offered as well: Instant Action, Galactic Conquest, and the plot-driven Historical Campaigns. ~ T.J. Star Wars Battlefront
4 Star Review  GameZone - Oct 6, 2004

It’s a tough life being a Storm Trooper fighting under the banner of the great Empire. Not only do you have to walk around in that very tight and constrictive armor but the pay is lousy and your buddies are all clones just like you so you can just imagine what ladies night at the local cantina is like on Saturdays. Yet there are some really excellent perks, one of them being that you get to crush Republic scum and see some really interesting sights while you’re at it. Yes, going into battle against the Rebellion in an all-out war more than makes up for the cold showers and vile food.

Star Wars: Battlefront (ps2)
4 Star Review  IGN.com - Sep 17, 2004

It's hard to do a franchise title right. It's especially hard if the franchise in question is the one that practically defined modern science fiction for millions upon millions of rabid fans. When a developer does handle Star Wars, it's necessary to create an authentic experience -- an obligation to ensure the franchise is being done justice. It's also necessary to ensure in-game events transpire similarly to how they played out in the films. But, for as important as these things are, there is also the requirement to create a legitimately good game on its own merits. Battlefront achieves this balance, but not without a few groans and gripes along the way.

Star Wars Battlefront
5 Star Review   By member mojave - Nov 9, 2005

Strengths: Awesome shooter with Star Wars licence, great online play

Weakness: Could use a little more stat tracking

First, I'll start off this review by saying that I have never been a fan of first or third person shooter type games. Halo? Never played it, don't want to... The only game that is sort of in that genre that I have enjoyed is Metroid Prime. I also have never been into playing games online. Well, then along came Star Wars Battlefront. I avoided this game for a while because I didn't think I'd like it - how wrong I was. This game is incredible! Being able to play as clone troopers, battle droids, stormtroopers, rebel pilots, etc in several highly detailed Star Wars locations is great fun. The game is even more fun when played online. This is the first time I've tried using my PS2 online and, I must say, it was very easy to do - and it is free, which beats the Xbox any day. A couple of the maps are particularly fun. First off is the Tattoine desert map with it's variety of flying and ground vehicles, as well as the Sarlacc that will eat anybody who comes too close. Both Bespin maps are great fun too. I was disappointed that neither of these made it into the sequel, but this review is about the original game! Hoth and Geonosis (both of which did make it into the second game) are also very good. One thing that is remedied a bit in the sequel but missing from this first game is stat tracking. There is no online leader board and very little personal stats tracked in the single player game. However, that is really incidental to the core of the game, which is very good and very fun. Since this game is a budget title now, there is no reason not to get it. It is worth getting both versions too, since there are many maps that didn't make it from the 1st to the 2nd. This gives you the opportunity to pick this one up cheaply to see if you like the basic gameplay, and then get the sequel if you find it amazing as I did.

great game, sequel will fix mistakes
5 Star Review

Strengths: this game provides a unique battle experience, and can make for hours of entertaining yourself by shooting jawas, ewoks, gungans and using the wookie grenade launcher.

Weakness: The sky isnt big enough to dogfight in, and the jedi are nothing special, but im looking folward to having that change in the next one

This game is the best Star Wars game there is for the PS2. If you are a Star Wars fan or just looking for a good shooter, i suggest this game, or waiting for the sequel that comes out nov. 1rst of this year. This game is great online, void all of the 10 year old kids that have no idea what theyre doing. (GET THE SEQUEL, OR AT LEAST CHECK IT OUT AT WWW.LUCASARTS.COM)

Fun shooter for the star wars fans
4 Star Review   By member mcgavin27 - Oct 21, 2005

Strengths: online play

Weakness: weak story

This game has great gameplay. It is basically battlefield 1942 set in the star wars universe. I admit I am not the biggest star wars fan but I had a lot of fun with this title. It has great mulitplayer and the single player is quite helpfully for practiing for mulitplayer. Highly recommended.

Star Wars: Battlefront
5 Star Review   By member Piccol0z - Oct 13, 2005

Strengths: Amazing graphics, awesome game play, online support, multiple levels

Weakness: None!

This is an amazing video game that is a must own for any Star Wars fanatic. The game has several battlefields from the different scenes during the many Star Wars movies, and this game allows the gamer to participate in these major battles to determine the outcome! One can play as the Empire or the Rebels and select a certain class of character, such as a sniper or plain storm trooper. The player can also control several vehicles during the battles to give them an advantage over the enemy! One can challenge a friend or play online with others to reenact these legendary battles!

Good Shooter based on Great License
4 Star Review   By member headchef - Sep 2, 2005

Strengths: + great looking graphics + multiplayer (versus and co-op) + based on the Star Wars franchise

Weakness: - very little variety in terms of missions (it's always "capture the flag") - no storyline

It's certainly not the best shooter but being able to play through some of the biggest battles in Star Wars history makes it well worth the price. The single player mode gets repetitive fast especially since there's no aspect of exploration and all battles pretty much have the same goals (i.e. capture the enemy bases or destroy something). Great game if you have a friend to play the multiplayer modes. One of the best Greatest Hits titles.

fun forever
5 Star Review   By member Warner1281 - Aug 22, 2005

Strengths: Plenty of characters to play as, hours of gameplay, a lot of variety

Battlefront is my vote for the best Star Wars game for PS2 available. There are a dozen different characters you can play as, the action is nonstop, multiplayer is great, and the graphics are kick butt. Overall, this game is great for any fan of Star Wars.

Like being in the Star Wars movies
4 Star Review   By member mrtwo - Aug 6, 2005

Strengths: Giant battles, different classes to choose from, great graphics.

Weakness: Controls a little difficult at times (compared to mouse and keyboard combat)

I have not played this game online yet since I don't yet own the ps2 network adapter, but the single player missions were very fun! It only took me 1 evening to complete all of them, but I was playing on easy level. It is a good feeling to capture a checkpoint and create a new spawn point for your troops. Overall, my favorite mission was the battle on Hoth which gave you the option to fly around the At-At's and shoot a tow cable at them to bring them down just like the movie. Very fun indeed. I highly recommend this game if you enjoyed the Star Wars movies.

You get to kil ewoks, what more could you want?
4 Star Review   By member never4ever - Jul 10, 2005

Strengths: Immensive Star Wars game. Only online Star Wars game.

Weakness: Single player isn't as good as multiplayer.

Star Wars games are a dime-a-dozen these days, but even so, Battlefront is one of the best. Play as dozens of characters and relive some of the trilogy's biggest battles. Great fun, highly recommended!

5 Star Review   By member bulby - Jun 7, 2005

Strengths: Huge variety of characters and different classes, will provide many hours of gameplay, co-op adds to the depth of the game

Weakness: Gets too repetitive if you play this a lot and/or alone

Star Wars Battlefront is one of my favorite first person shooters for the Playstation 2. The game has everything except a solid storyline. There are a huge amount of characters that you can choose from. You can be a medic who can cure your comrades, a soldier who is equipped with all the deadly weapons to take out any enemy, a pilot which can "heal" any machine/vehicle, etc. As a bonus, you'll also be able to play along-side (or against) Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker. This game has non-stop action and you'll get to fight through all of the major battles that you watched on the big screen! A huge bonus to this game is the co-op (cooperative) mode. A friend can join you on your team or play against you and it adds to the replayability of this game. When I first bought this game, I could not put it down for a month straight. Once I got bored with single player, my friend joined me in the gameplay and it seemed like a whole new game. You can strategize with or against your partner, or they can strengthen the weak points of your team. This game is well worth the money because it will provide you with countless hours of fun gameplay, and it comes highly recommended.

5 Star Review   By member Rare_Monkey - Apr 30, 2005

Strengths: Multiple Classes to choose from and vehicles to operate. On foot, the levels are massive.

Weakness: In an X-Wing or any flying vehicle, it is way to small. You barely have enough time to shoot before you have to turn around.

This game is very polished, In pretty much every way. You can be the Alliance, The Imperials, The Clone troopers, and Battle Droids. Each has there own special character classes and have vehicles unique to that class. The Game has multiple worlds to choose from, including, but not exclusive to, Tatooine, Naboo, and Cloud City. Some even have alternate versions of the planet. Overall after playing it for some time, I've come to the conclusion that this game rocks! I would recommend it to anyone, even if you not a star wars fan.
