The Thing
4.5 Star Review  GameZone - Sep 18, 2002

The cold will freeze you in minutes. What waits inside can kill you in seconds. And then there is fear ? that insidious element that can turn comrades against one another, or reduce a strong man of action to a quivering jellyfish coiled up in a fetal position. The Thing, a Xbox release from Black Label Games and Universal Interactive, has all the elements that make an action-adventure/role-playing game intriguing, entertaining, and scary. To understand the premise for this game, one needs to retrace the past. In 1951 a scary little black-and-white "B" horror movie introduced the world to a "what-if" scenario.

Thing
4 Star Review  GameSpy - Sep 13, 2002

Ever since Resident Evil came out, scaring the hell out of gamers has been a favorite pastime of video-game publishers. The variety of thrills has grown over the years, with games like Silent Hill, Parasite Eve, Fatal Frame, and more. However, the genre has grown a bit stagnant. I mean, there is only so many times a monster jumping through a window will scare you. Several developers have attempted to add new twists to the tried and true formula, but none have been too successful; recent survival-horror games have had gimmicks rather than true advancements. Black Label games introduces one of the most unique devices ever implemented in survival horror with its trust / fear system. It's the differentiating factor that separates The Thing from the competition, and while the game has other flaws, trust / fear is the freshest addition the genre has seen in years.

The Thing
3 Star Review   By member warlion - Feb 3, 2006

Strengths: scary atmosphere

Weakness: micro-management of your allies is a pain

The Thing is a third person shooter for the X box and is similar to Max Payne and resident evil. The game continues where the movie left off, and you are Blake, an Army officer sent to investigate the destroyed Arctic base. Accompanying you are a few soldiers, a medic, an engineer, and a gunner. This game has great graphics and does a good job of setting up a scary and foreboding atmosphere. Oupost 31 and the Swedish base look just like the movie counterparts. You will shiver yourself when your character runs out into the frigid, blowing snow and you hear the fierce winds whooshing past your character. What makes the game scary is that you do not know which one of your teammates will be infected and transformed into the next mutated thing. Also, remember that your teammates are just as scared and nervous as you are and will gradually begin to freak out when they see the gruesome remnants of the previous team before them, scattered throughout the ruined base. So you have to do some micromanaging of your teammates because the game utilizes a fear/ trust system. The more scared your teammates are, the more they begin to suspect you of being the thing and if they are not properly placated, they will either turn on you and try to kill you or will turn their gun on themselves. Unfortunately, if you're looking for a straight and simple shooter like Max Payne, this game doesn't fully lived up to that expectation because , instead of focusing on simply blowing away the alien enemies, you also have to worry about your own teammates, kind of like an irritating escort mission. I was sometimes tempted to simply leave them behind and just tackled the enemy by myself, but the game won't let you do so. Also, it is sometimes hard to aim your weapon in the first person perspective, because the cursor moves too slow while your small alien enemies rapidly crawls and then jumps at you. Overall, this game is pretty decent and if you like your games suspenseful and scary, then you will enjoy this game also.

A good horror adventure
4 Star Review   By member mkelehan - Jul 8, 2005

Strengths: Good game at a great price.

Weakness: Friendly AI isn't always up to par.

This game, based loosely on the classic movie about a killer carrot beast, has you leading a squad of people trying to survive against The Thing. It screams online multiplayer, but such is not to be found here; instead, you've got friends controlled by AI. It's servicable, but wouldn't it be more fun if they were your friends?

3 Star Review   By member Alive741 - Jun 26, 2005

Strengths: Good story line

Weakness: Bad graphics for an XBox game

This game is relatively good *IF* you can get into it. It's a horror type game, and for its time it is pretty good. Remember, it is 2 - 3 years old. The problem is a lot of people just can't or won't get into it, and immediately say it sucks and put it down. This game doesn't suck, it's nothing spectacular, but it surely doesn't suck.

4 Star Review   By member berserker_kev - May 30, 2005

Strengths: Continuation of the movie's story, scary, trust system.

Weakness: Hardly any replay value

The Thing picks up right where John Carpenter's movie left off. You command a squad and are sent to the camp in the Antarctic where the events of the film took place to investigate the situation. The game has many elements taken from the movie. Your squad members sometimes get shaky and you have to calm them down through the means of giving them weapons or possibly taking a blood test to prove that you are not infected. Just like in the movie it is hard to guess who is infected and who is not. Occasionally a member of your group will "Thing-out"; sometimes this is scripted and other times it is because they have been attacked too much. The only flaw that I have found is the fact that once you're done with the game, there is really no reason to play it again. Survival horror fans should definitely give this one a try.

4 Star Review   By member FOnewearl - May 11, 2005

Strengths: Good level design, squad commands work good, movie based game that isn't horrible :)

Weakness: No Incentive to play though the game once you've beaten it

The Thing is a game based on John Carpenter's movie by the same name that was released in 1982. Where most movie to games fail The Thing happens to do a good job. The gameplay in The Thing consists of a good combination of action, exploration and puzzle solving, with a nice twist of horror to help the story along in the game. I would recommend giving The Thing a try to anyone that likes action adventure & survival horror games as they stand a good chance of liking The Thing.

4 Star Review   By member FFMooglestar - Feb 23, 2005

Strengths: Scary... extremely scary.

Weakness: Graphics could be better

The Thing rocks. From the very begining this game is scary. You start out as a soldier sent out looking for survivors in a destroyed science base in antarctica but find only mangled or frozen bodies, and scattered papers that describe some kind of mutating infection. Later you find a fellow soldier, cowering in a corner, surrounded by mutilated bodys and babbeling about an unknown horror. This horror, the thing, is a virus that mutates anyone infected by it into a nightmarish beast. Your fellow soldiers suspect everyone of being infected and paranoia sets in. In this game you not only have to fight the monsters, but also cope with your teammates fears. A great story, cool weapons, and managing fear make The Thing a grade A horror game. The gory content of this game also makes it scary. Finding an evecerated corpse impaled upon its own severed limb, while your men cringe nervously as they hear strange shrieks and growels coming from the shadows, really adds up to a terrify game. I love this game and all my buddys who have rented or borrowed it ended up buying it because they loved it so much too. If you enjoy horror games or are a fan of the movie than buy it because this will blow you away. (you should also see the movie if you havent already, its great)

5 Star Review   By member mcfly1304 - Dec 11, 2002

Strengths: Moody, stressful, great graphics, takes strategy to stay alive

Weakness: sometimes frustrating, single player only

Violent, gore filled, strategic, and visually top-notch. You will stay up long hours with this one. I'm new to console games (X-Box and PC game junkie), but if developers keep producing this high level of FPS/RPG for us couch 'taters, I'll be a happy camper (no pun intended) indeed. Pretty darn scary!! Not for kids!!!! WATCH YOUR BACK! WE'VE GOT COMPANY! Buy it....or at least rent it first...and then buy it!
