Freedom Fighters
4 Star Review  GameZone - Oct 19, 2003

We all need something to believe in or a cause to take an interest in if only but to feel as if we were part of something special . . . and sometimes its just good to join the revolution just for the hell of it. There are plenty of games that put you directly into the people’s revolution (see Red Faction 2 and State of Emergency for the Xbox) but its Freedom Fighters that makes things very personal. It’s time to take back America from an old-fashioned kind of threat--the red communist threat of Cold War Russia. The game’s story is a what-if scenario that isn’t new to us (and those who have seen the 80s campy action film, Red Dawn, will know what I mean).

Freedom Fighters (xbox)
3 Star Review  GameSpy - Oct 5, 2003

In a sewer shaft deep under the streets, a makeshift raft floats towards a lean camp. Those aboard are soldiers, wounded from recent skirmishes with forces occupying their city -- these Freedom Fighters are what remains of the old America. It seems laughable that America was once as afraid of guys in fur hats as we are now of those in turbans, but it's true enough. But in this alternate future that fear never abated, as the Soviet Union threw its Iron Curtain over Europe, and now America. EA's Freedom Fighters is a squad-based action game that's as much Grand Theft Auto as Philip K Dick, and while it's fun, you'll wish for a deeper set of options by the time the war is over.

4 Star Review  IGN.com - Sep 22, 2003

For a game that's undergone so many name changes during its short marketing life, Freedom Fighters turned out surprisingly well. Whether you remember it as Freedom: Battle for Liberty Island or Freedom: Soldiers of Liberty, the third person action shooter blends squad-based tactics with a well presented story. The whole package comes off like an entry level tactical action game for those who can't get their minds around the all-too authentic realism of games like Rainbow Six or Conflict Desert Storm. It also deftly avoids the identity crisis that undermined Digital Anvil's Brute Force by keeping the basic game systems easy to understand and easy to execute.

Red Dawn
4 Star Review   By member DirtyPudding - Nov 4, 2005

Strengths: Above average graphics. Great audio. Multiplayer!!!

Weakness: Very difficult. Clunky controls

Freedom Fighters is a run-n-gun third person shooter from the makers of the Hitman series. The game in a nutshell is Red Dawn set in New York. The graphics are pretty much flawless as is the audio. One problem I had with the game is that the control setup is wacky, especially in the Xbox version. There is also the matter of difficulty. Even on the easiest difficult setting, the game is a real challenge. You do get help later on in the form of allies but they usually get killed just as easily as you do. There are cheat codes for this game but most are pretty much useless. My advice would be to buy this game for the PS2 because you can use a Gameshark, plus it has better controls.

4 Star Review   By member stmpjmp96 - Oct 29, 2005

Strengths: Easy to pick up. Squad action for beginners. 720 res is awesome.

Weakness: AI can be dumb at times. Linear as a ruler.

FF is a bit of a shooter, bit of an action game. Russia has overtaken the US and somehow youre in the middle of it all. Time to be a hero. You progress from spot to spot gaining new teammates as you go. Missions are pretty straightforward and mostly linear but thats not too bad. Your guys take directions well but can get themselves killed by doing very stupid things at times. All in all a very good game. Worthy of a buy. Expect only one playthrough though.

Freedom Fighters
4 Star Review   By member shipwreck1 - Oct 21, 2005

Strengths: Nice graphics, good sound, team combat system

Weakness: Control setup seems a little strange and can be really touchy, should have implemented a co-op mode

Freedom Fighters is a third-person shooter that is set in a New York City that has been overtaken be communist Soviets. You start out as a plumber that joins the revolution to overthrow the Soviets and return freedom to the city. In the beginning of the game you are just a lone man running and gunning his way through the levels, but as you earn charisma you get to have a team of fighters to accompany you. The gameplay is good, but I think the controls could have been better. The precise aiming is brought up by clicking in the left analog stick and then it is pretty difficult to be that precise with your aiming. The game generally auto-aims for you in normal shooting mode, but this takes away some of the satisfaction of actually aiming at specific enemies. There is a nice assortment of weapons and the team aspect works well later in the game. There are also opportunites to use the environment to your advantage by ducking behind cover and also by blowing up objects near enemies. The game is relatively short, but it's an enjoyable romp while it lasts.

3 Star Review   By member mick16 - Jul 5, 2005

Strengths: Story and sound, Artifical Intelligence

Weakness: No online play, Length of game, Multi-Player

Electronic Arts Freedom Fighters for the Xbox is an enjoyable action game. Set in a "Red Dawn" type of scenario whereby the Russians won the Cold War, you lead a recruit and command squad into battle. This 3rd person shooter has a nice array of weapons to aid your team in the revolution. The game has a very patriotic feeling to it (if you're American anyway) that will get you cheering as the game goes on. The lack of online play and length of the game is a downer, but for a budget third person action title, this is a solid game.

4 Star Review   By member sabin23 - Jul 5, 2005

Strengths: Unique third person game, good graphics and sound, commanding others in your squad.

Weakness: Short, not a lot of depth, multiplayer modes are lacking, no co-op missions.

This game is an interesting take on the GTA formula. The Soviets have invaded the US and it's up to you to liberate old glory. I really liked how this third person game played - there area lot of action elements but not all of it is mindless because there is a lot strategy aspects involved. You get to command your squad with various button placements but I wish it could have been deeper. This game was destined to have multiplayer aspects in the main storyline but it wasn't meant to be - the death matches aren't all that fun. This game would have really benefited from having a multiplayer mode in the main game (online or offline) but instead the game loses a lot of replay value due to this omission. I believe you will enjoy this game, especially now that the price has plummeted.

This game was well worth the money. The controls are incredibly good. They work VERY well with the Xbox controller. The graphics are above average for its time. The storyline is VERY unique. This game is surely worth the money, try it out!

3 Star Review   By member jeffreyjrose - Jun 20, 2005

Strengths: Squad-based gameplay is a nice turn from single person FPS games, decent graphics, great sound, fun multiplayer.

Weakness: Not online, limited number of multiplayer maps, color palette rather limited.

Made by the same team that created Hitman 2, this game offers a completely different style of gameplay experiences. The entire game revolves around fighting the Soviets who have taken over America. The storyline definitely pulls you in. As the game progresses, you get the ability to manage troops in battle, which proves to be quite enjoyable. It would have been nice if the multiplayer maps were more varied and if onine play had been added. I recommend this game, but after playing multiplayer with your friends for a week or two, you'll be done with this game.

4 Star Review   By member MaxBiaggi2 - Apr 29, 2005

Strengths: Compelling story and game play dynamics

Weakness: Average graphics, no online capabilities, a little short

In an alternate future the Soviet Union still exists and has invaded America. As a member of the resistance, it's your job to send the Red Army back where it came from, and if you play well enough, you'll eventually command your own squads and troops of men. As a third person shooter, Freedom Fighters is perhaps just average, but the ability to defend your homeland against an admittedly evil invading empire raises the game's emotional draw just a bit. Online capabilities for multiplayer mode would have helped this title a lot. The graphics could be better (and the game itself a bit longer), but the overall package rises above the average shooting game out there.

4 Star Review   By member Bullettime - Apr 23, 2005

Strengths: Interesting storyline, team and strategy elements, 720p HDTV support

Weakness: Bland graphics (despite the 720p resolution), repetitious missions, little replay value

Even though it didn't make much noise when it was released, Freedom Fighters was fairly well received by the gaming press. The game's unique scenario (Soviets invading America) and solid gameplay contributed to that. While it's not the best third-person action game out there, the gameplay nicely incorporates team and strategy elements, making it more than a simple run-and-gun experience. You'll need to use your brain a little while your shooting up the dastardly Reds. The multiplayer mode is halfway decent, but it won't hold your attention for long. Actually, this game is the epitome of a rental game. It's fun while it lasts, but you probably won't have any desire to play through it again.

5 Star Review   By member shrike424242 - Sep 15, 2004

Strengths: Nice graphics, reasonably smart AI, gets more interesting as a squad-based shooter, amazing sound, enjoyable storyline

Weakness: No Xbox Live for multiplayer, seems a little short

This game works in a history where the US has been invaded by the Soviet Union and you work as a freedom fighter, trying to liberate the US from their control. Think "Red Dawn" in a videogame. There's some funny bits as the game goes along, so the humor value is nice. The graphics are quite good and nice to look at, with some great sound to back it up. Starts out as a third-person shooter, on your own, though as time goes on, you get the ability to command troops, and as your charisma increases, the more troops you can command, which help you out on missions and firefights. Once you get into some of the messier situations, the additional help makes the game even more fun. There's multiplayer, though no XBox Live support, just 4-person split screen. Co-op would've been a nice addition. Once you get through the game, it seems a little short, and more content for another pass through the game would've been nice. It's not a bad thing, as the harder difficulty settings make it more challenging, but it's the same stuff, just harder. I'm glad I picked it up and would recommend it to others, especially since the price has dropped towards a budget title.
