Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
4.5 Star Review  GameZone - Aug 16, 2006

Very rarely do strategy/RPGs possess the power to entrance players from the moment they begin. Only once a generation is an RPG so hilarious that it makes having a specific award necessary to reward its accomplishment. Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories will come out looking like another anime-based adventure attempting to cash in on the legacy set more than a decade ago by Lunar: The Silver Star Story. In reality it is a unique masterpiece that achieves instant entrancement. Players will be overwhelmed with laughter, fall in love with the cast, and be extremely anxious to find out what happens next.

Atlus sequel to the popular strategy rpg
5 Star Review   By member Spoon_Si - Dec 22, 2007

Strengths: New improved graphics, exciting interesting storyline. Highly addictive gameplay.

Weakness: High learning curve, for newcomers to this series.

Disgaea 2 is the most anticipated strategy game of the year. With lots high hopes, in many many ways this game has met all the hardcore gamers needs. Bringing more of the strategy needed to win in each battle, with each battle being interesting and part of the storyline. You won't find no tedious game play. Also back, is the adorable cutesy anime artwork and returning character from the first game. I highly recommend this 80+ hours of fun.

disgaea 2
5 Star Review   By member Pookymeister - Dec 4, 2007

Strengths: SRPG at its best - animations

Weakness: not for the short term player

Sequel to one of the better SRPG for the PS2 , Disgaea 2 expands on its strengths and makes for another great game. This is the perfect game for the perfectionist. You have hundreds of things you can tweak - characters, spells, armor, etc etc etc. You can spend an hour just setting up a character for the next battle. So if you think this is your type of game, i definitely recommend it. Can't wait for the next one in the series on the ps3!

One of the best strategy games for PS2
4 Star Review   By member lobitoh - Nov 10, 2007

Strengths: Characters, story line and Customization

Weakness: Few slow moments during cutscenes and animations

This games is considered one of the best strategy released. Disgaea 2 is the continuation of the first game Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. This game packs a lot of time for strategy and has one of the best stories. From almost hundreds of customizing characters and classes and even magic spell and special attacks. This game make you spend hours of hours of fun plus the animations. I recommend this as a must buy game since its the sequel of the first one and good for those rpg-strategists.

Not as good as the first but the first set the bar quite high
5 Star Review   By member blakerja - Nov 2, 2007

Strengths: Great story, excellent characters, many hours of entertainment.

Weakness: Lacks some of the charm of the first game. Main characters are not the same as in the 1st game.

The game looks and sounds great, particularly the voice acting. Some characters from the original are in the game although they are not main characters which may turn some people away. The game may be too long for casual, non-strategy rpg types.

Disgaea 2
4 Star Review   By member mojave - Oct 3, 2007

Strengths: Sequel to one of the greatest console strategy RPG's ever made

Weakness: Not much different than the first

The first Disgaea game is a compelling strategy game that can take you over 100 hours to fully complete. The sequel is similar, with some minor tweaks to the gameplay. Basically, if you liked the first one then you will appreciate the new story and minor differences this time around. If you haven't played the first, then it doesn't really matter - play either one. The game is not for beginners though, as the game is deep and can be challenging in parts (and may require reset/restarts after investing hours into a particular level). The graphics are adequate. The first title was not of system-pushing caliber and the second is slightly more polished but nothing spectacular. But that is not really the focus of this game, so that's not a big issue. While the first game became quite rare and expensive before it was reprinted a few times, the sequel seems fairly commonplace now and can be had in the $30 range. It is definitely worth that price if you are a fan of turn-based strategy RPGs as you will no doubt get many hours of enjoyment out of it.

Ready Dood?
5 Star Review   By member mirado182 - Sep 15, 2007

Strengths: Improves on the first in just about every way

Weakness: I found the story in the first one to be more enjoyable

If you loved the first Disgaea, then you'll love this as well. For those that don't know, this series is known for being a great SRPG (like Final Fantasy Tactics). It's deep, funny, charming, and very enjoyable. If you've never played a SRPG or don't even know what a SRPG is though, this game may take a while to get used to. Overall, I'd say this is a must buy.

SRPG goodness
5 Star Review   By member botticus - Sep 3, 2007

Strengths: Engaging story, excellent gameplay

Weakness: Subpar graphics for the platform

This sequel to the first Disgaea from NIS is an improvement in all ways (other than graphics). Those looking for a solid strategy RPG could do much worse than the Disgaea series. Though the graphics in these games are generally on the lower-end of what you would expect out of a PS2 game, the fantastic storyline and intuitive game mechanics more than make up for it. There are numerous optional sidequests that can provide near 100 hours of gameplay.

5 Star Review   By member jwong71 - Aug 30, 2007

Strengths: Nippon Ichi gameplay. Cool cameos and unlockables. Japanese voice acting. Prinnies.

Weakness: Definitely geared more towards fans of Nippon Ichi. Story and new characters are not as endearing as the first.

As I mentioned in my previous Disgaea review, this game is definitely geared towards fans of strategy RPG’s, in particular, Nippon Ichi’s style of gameplay. The gameplay, slightly risqué humor, large cast of characters and unlockables are still present along with the main story and power leveling parts. The gameplay is almost an exact duplicate of the first with some minor additions (Dark World, Pirates, Felonies, etc.). The story is basically what differentiates this from the original with you playing as the good guy (Adel) this time. Storywise, it is not as endearing as the first but you did not buy this game for the story. If you liked Disgaea or any of the other Nippon Ichi games (La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom) you should definitely add this to your collection. 50 hours of gameplay so far. If the first game is any indication, I will be playing this game for another 250 hours.

Disgaea 2
5 Star Review   By member keelie - Aug 15, 2007

Strengths: Gameplay

Disgaea 2 is a second installment of the popular, addictive Strategic RPG phenomenon Disgaea: Hour of Darkness from NIS America. It is a turn-based battle system in a grid-like environment. Disgaea 2 may not be as good as Disgaea but it can still bring nearly hundred of hours of addictive gameplay. There are similar SRPG game from NISA, namely, La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom. However, Disgaea is clearly on the top of all these. Disgaea 2 is pretty close to the top too.

One of The Best SRPGs Is Back
4 Star Review   By member FOnewearl - Aug 13, 2007

Strengths: Lots of Replay

Weakness: Camera Problems (At Times)

Disgaea 2 is a Strategy RPG game and while it's one of the best on the PS2 it's very much like the first game overall. The battles take place on an isometric battle field on which you will move around and attack enemies in turn based battle. In Disgaea 2 they added a felony system in which your characters may get accused of a crime and will have to go to court and if they are found guilty will be rewarded for it which may sound strange but in the world Disgaea 2 takes place in certain things are upside down since everyone (except the main character you play as) have been turned into demons. I would highly recommend Disgaea 2 to armchair SRPG fans as it has 8 endings and a ton of gameplay (well over 100 hours) along with multiply endings. I would advice to other to rent it so they can try before buying as Disgaea 2 is a fairly difficult game and won't be for everyone.

Another Masterpiece from NIS
5 Star Review   By member t260 - Jul 28, 2007

Strengths: Good replay value

Weakness: NIS's localization isnt as good as the first game

Disgaea 2 is the sequel to one of the best SRPG on PS2. Back is the same turned base battles that are just as fun. A new cast is introduce, and they are just as funny as the main characters from the original. My only complain is that the localization is not as good as the original, which is really only a minor flaw.

Continued excellence
4 Star Review   By member vherub - Jun 11, 2007

Strengths: The original game is a highmark in the strategy/rpg genre and this sequel keeps the same great gameplay mechanics and overall feel.

Weakness: Can suck countless hours from your life.

For certain gamers, the strategy-rpg is an example of addiction as a disease. Maybe it began with Finaal Fantasy Tactics or Ogre Battle. Or La Pucelle. or Phantom Brave. But the Disgaea games rank near the top of the pile. The humor and anime may have been what set aside the first game, but its the addictive gameplay, variety of experience and micromanagment that has a deathgrip on one's freetime. This sequel does not disappoint. If you wanted more disgaea, this is more disgaea. It may not have the same strong connections to the characters you control, but it still gives a sweet rush while playing.

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
4 Star Review   By member Brand_X_RnD - May 29, 2007

Strengths: Solid gameplay, includes original Japanese VA, plenty of sub-quests, plenty of endearing characters

Weakness: Sub-par English voice acting, Japanese voice acting (understandably) doesn't cover videos, incorrect grammar and spelling sprinkled throughout the game, maxing out the game may take forever...

This is the follow-up to Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. For hardcore fans of the original, this is a tough act to follow. The core gameplay has remained the same, such as the grid based maps and team-up attacks, but there are a few welcome additions such as stack attacks and the Dark Court. The game retains the anime/manga art style, which I enjoyed. The Japanese voice acting is excellent, but I thought the English voice acting could use some work. Story-wise, the game wasn't too compelling at times, and the main protagonist can be bland, but I found the other characters such as Rozalin and Tink to be amusing. Minor grammar and spelling mistakes can be found throughout the game during some dialog and in some item descriptions. With a level cap of 9999, and randomized maps in item world, there is plenty to do in this game. Gameplay could easily exceed 100 hours, but if you're not ready such a time commitment, then never fear. The main storyline could easily be completed in half that time. I would highly recommend this game to any strategy RPG fan, and would also recommend it to anyone willing to try the genre out or to those who enjoy anime or manga.

Disgaea 2
4 Star Review   By member eau697 - May 21, 2007

Strengths: Gameplot and gameplay.

Disgaea 2 is a welcomed sequel to the popular Disgaea game from Nippon Ichi Software. It is a well-crafted strategy RPG game that make the original Disgaea one of the best games on Playstation 2. The gameplay is excellent. You have a few characters to begin with, each with special powers for combat in the Neverworld. You level up and build more characters. You can buy and sell weapons and accessories between levels. There is also an Item World in which you can quickly level up but the combat in it can be brutal and difficult. This game can be very long, which is a good thing. Some people expect a lot from Disgaea 2 after playing the original Disgaea, and are disappointed. Disgaea 2 is still an excellent game on its own. It shares a lot of similarity with the original Disgaea. I certainly enjoy Disgaea 2 as much as the original one. Highly recommended!

NIS's best Strategy RPG yet
5 Star Review   By member Roufuss - May 11, 2007

Strengths: Lots of stuff to do, nice 2D graphics, tons of customization, this game will keep you busy for a long time

Weakness: The fact that there is too much stat tracking and depth may deter some people away

Disgaea 2 improves upon everything that made the original cult classic Disgaea a huge hit. More enemies, more stats, more customization, everything has been expanded upon to create a richer, more satisfying experience. The characters are memorable (and even include some favorites from Disgaea!), and the bonus content insures there is lots to do after the story has been beaten. Gamers who love to tweak stats and settings will find themselves right at home with Disgaea 2, with virtually everything being able to be customized, however for the more casual gamer, this may prove to be a bit overwhelming. Clocking in at over 100 hours, Disgaea 2 is one game that will keep you busy for days to come!

sequel to the original Disgaea!
3 Star Review   By member Vtdgnca - May 7, 2007

Strengths: - The 2d sprites are done in typical NIS fashion -Japanese voice acting -The controls are very easy to master and very good

Weakness: -The sprites rotate oddly since they're all from a 4-point perspective -short story mode

I recommend Disgaea 2 to anyone who enjoys strategy RPG's or simply the first Disgaea. It's quite simply a fantastic game that will keep you occupied for a very long time to come. If you want replayability and want that Disgaea experience all over again... it's just not here. A good game to be sure, just not nearly up to the original Disgaea's standards.

Bland Memories
3 Star Review   By member slightnighter - Mar 19, 2007

Strengths: Combat system, AI, geosymbols.

Weakness: Lack of unique enemies,

For those of you looking to find the trademark humor of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness in Disgaea 2, don't bother. The only splotches of humor come with Etna, and those don't come around that often. Comedy gold this is not. Disgaea 2 brings back the combat its predecessor had, albeit with some enhancements. Each character class possesses a special ability that activates under certain conditions. These include a lower SP cost and an increased chance of critical hits when a character's HP is low. Elements like team attacks and combos also return to make battles, leveling, and receiving end-battle bonuses easier. The Dark Assembly also returns with opposing factions making the process of passing bills more complicated. If you court members of one faction, the opposing faction will vote the opposite way on bills. The Item World also returns to make the game even longer than normal. Venturing into items will make them stronger, and will allow you to find more items in those worlds. The enemies are a mixed bag in this game. While they don't make stupid moves, like playing defensively all the time or attacking nonexistent opponents, they are extremely easy to kill. I saw the Game Over screen only 2 times during the game, and that made me throw down the controller in disgust. Almost all of the enemies you fight can be created and brought into your party, so it doesn't make them unique enough to make the combat fun. The levels are different, however, as they use geopanel effects to make them interesting. Some of these effects include increasing enemies' levels each turn, giving them invulnerability, and allowing both players and enemies to warp around the levels. This makes players think a bit more, and adds to the tactics of the game. Disgaea 2 is a rental only, if even that. It does not even have much comedy covering for its flawed combat, so the only reason why you would want to play it is if you have played other, fun tactics games already. 6.5/10
