Mass Effect
5 Star Review  GameZone - Nov 20, 2007

The first in a trilogy, Mass Effect delivers the next-generation experience I was expecting. The storyline had me hooked until the very end where it left me wanting more. I can honestly say that the universe Bioware created is the best I have encountered since George Lucas created Star Wars. Never have I been compelled to find out everything there is to a storyline as I did with Mass Effect.

Mass Effect | Xbox 360
3.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - Jul 24, 2009

Mass Effect is a new RPG from BioWare who developed the critically acclaimed Star Wars: Knights of Old Republic games, and Jade Empire. The game takes place in a sci-fi world where space exploration is common and robots, aliens and humans comingle. The action is split into three main modes: conversations with other characters, exploration around the galaxy, and combat. BioWare focuses a lot of energy on the conversation side of the game introducing a new form of dialog progression that moves away from requiring copious amounts of text and instead is more emotion base. Every character is fully voiced, and the player simply chooses a general kind of reaction with the actors fleshing out the reaction with the proper animations and voice. Exploration is further divided into two stages, one is the galactic map where you can choose to pilot your ship, the Normandy, to hundreds of different planets. Once ... PROS: (1) Fantastic character graphics. (2) Deep, compelling story. (3) Innovative dialogue system. (4) incredibly cinematic experience without sacrificing gameplay (5) many weapons, armors and other technology - allows for a high level of character customization ... CONS: (1) explored worlds are all the same mountainous hellzones with different textures (2) repeated use of buildings on different worlds (3) The PC version can only be installed three times due to DRM. (4) Tedious inventory system. (5) Frustrating vehicle controls.

Not for everybody but is very good and worth trying
4 Star Review   By member Dlimits - Jun 4, 2008

Strengths: Great story, good graphics afetr editing the settings, great combat system after you learn the game.

Weakness: Inventory management, And a long learning curve that can throw you off.

Let me add about my title "Not for Everybody" is because not everybody plays RPG's and this one has a longer learning curve compared to Bioware's past game Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic. This isn’t a bad game but let me start on the Negative factors. 1. The learning curve was longer then other games, I was ready to sell the game but I just couldn’t believe the game was bad, I stuck it out and now I love the game 2. Knowing you way around the place isn’t all that great, I am often in the menu trying to navigate 3. The game is a power hog and starts to slow down over time, you need to give the console a break With that out of the way let me tell you why you will like this game 1. The combat system works amazingly good in this game when you learn how to use the controls effectively 2. All your allies have a unique balance of strength’s and weaknesses. Using the squad as a team is very tactical in higher levels when you understand the game and have all the ability’s to use in great tactical battles 3. Not many games have a good storyline these days and were used to it, when a game like this with a great story comes we appreciate it allot, a good story fuels the moment and adds replay value to play it again and again. 4. The interaction with other characters is very good in this game To sum it up, this game has lots of strength’s and will affect the way the industry makes RPG's to compare and compete. This is a must have for anybody who likes RPG's and a good start for newcomers who are willing to deal with the learning curve in the beginning of the game.

The best game of its time
5 Star Review   By member gentbm - Apr 26, 2008

Strengths: Graphics, Story line, Action, overall game play

Weakness: Elevator

This was the best game I have played in a very long time no question about it. The graphics were amazing and the story line was even better. The way the game ends just keeps you wanting more, and I love how they made it so you can chose what you want to say in your conversations, which can impact the rest of the game, and impact the following game whenever it comes out. Even after i beat the game, I still went back and played the game again, because even though you already beat it, you can still make a different guy and have a different attitude throughout the game, which will change the whole game around, so its like you're still following the same story line, but everything else happens differently, for example. There was one guy I was fighting and the first time after I got don't talking to him we fought, but the second time I played I decided to change up my dialog and after we talked he killed himself, so no matter how many time you play it, each time is different. The only things I didn't like was whenever you got into an elevator, it took forever to get anywhere on it. After the game ended I averaged up how much time my guy actually spent on the elevator alone and it turned out to be around 30 minutes. Also one more thing I didn't like was the fact that every planet you went on to do a side mission, all those bases seemed to be exactly the same, but with minor changes to them. Well thats all I have to say about this game, and my last word to you is going to be if you haven't played this game, or don't own it, then go out right this very second and buy it because you will have an awesome time playing this game.

Mass Effect Review
4 Star Review   By member edhoo - Mar 7, 2008

Strengths: Story

Weakness: Linear gameplay, short

I'll start off by saying Mass Effect was one of my most anticipated games ever. I love what BioWare does, and hoped that Mass Effect would be just as good. I was slightly disappointed, but it is still a great game. The story is very good, and the cutscenes are flat out amazing. The problems are that the game has a linear story design and it is very short, it only took me 13 hours to beat. But it is still a very good, just not exactly what I expected.

Mass Effect
5 Star Review   By member mojave - Mar 3, 2008

Strengths: 3rd person action RPG with a great story

Weakness: More action than RPG

Mass Effect is a great third-person shooter/RPG hybrid from Bioware, the makers of the classic Star Wars RPG Knight of the Old Republic. While I was somewhat skeptical of the more real-time combat aspect vs the previous game I actually ended up enjoying it quite a bit even though I wouldn't call this an RPG in the strictest sense. You play as Commander Shepard (who you can customize as either male or female) and find yourself thrust into the middle of a cataclysmic event for all the sentient species in the galaxy. The story is engaging and fully voice-acted which is pretty impressive. You will end up with various human and alien crew members and you can have 2 along with you while exploring. Each one will make different comments and they will interact with one another as well - a really nice touch. Your character can be one of 3 main classes (or various hybrids): a soldier with all the weapon skills, a biotic user who can use various "force-like" powers such as throw and lift, and an Engineer who can hack mechanical enemies. Each of the sidekick characters is a specialist in one of these classes too so you can take ones along on missions that compliment your skills. While there are certainly role-playing elements to this game (character levels, different weapons, etc) the pseudo-real time combat and somewhat limited exploration aspects make it seem more like a straight-up action game. There are RPG-like missions to do while exploring the one main city area (called The Citadel) and once you obtain a ship you can explore the galaxy at will. Each system you can travel to will have a bunch of planets but just one you can land on. In general, each will have a sidequest associated with it. However, these can get repetitive as you will find the installations on these planets fall under a handful of categories (mine, warehouse, bunker, etc). Also, beyond the single point on the planet where the mission is located, the vast spaces on the rest of the planet (that you explore with a rover vehicle) are mostly empty with just minerals and other various collection sidequest items to find. The main game will take you about 30 hours if you try to complete most of the sidequests and there is certainly replay value in that you can play as different classes, at higher difficulty levels, and as either paragon (good guy) or renegade (bad guy). To get all the achievements will take you at least 4 playthroughs (1 each in 3 different classes plus at least a second playthrough of one of the same characters to hit the level cap). Once you know how the game works and where the sidequests are located subsequent playthroughs can be done in much less time though. There will also be new planets to explore available via downloadable content.

Mass Effect (XB360)
5 Star Review   By member cotebryan - Mar 2, 2008

Strengths: (1) Great graphics and life-like animation, very beautiful (2) Great story, you really feel like you are "in" the Mass Effect universe (3) Very creative character, alien, vehicle and planet designs

Weakness: (1) The complexity of the menus, tech and biotic powers and weapon selection/upgrades demands a lot of time to get a handle on (2) The Mako rover/tank drives very poorly and erratic.

First off, Mass Effect is probably the game that has delivered the most epic and immersing experience to date. I credit its success to the hyper-realistic graphics and animation and amazing depth of the conversations with other characters. There are also many well-thought out sub-plot lines (though, some minor side quests do seem to be unfinished experiences). At first, I found the combat to be god-awful because the guns you have early on in the game overheat after a couple of shots (why are guns in the future so much worse than the guns in the present?) and I had a hard time running and gunning because it was difficult to aim. In time, I acclimated to aiming the crosshairs and acquired better guns (or upgraded them) so I stood a better chance. Also, before I had access to (or mastery of) biotic/tech powers, I had no way to keep the enemies at a distance. They would often charge right up on me and kill me, however, if I were to attempt this I would die quickly. BUT, I kept playing because the story and dialogue portions were so good and eventually came to really like the combat. HERE'S WHY: As stated earlier, I equipped better weapons and also learned that I can aim while pausing the action in the Weapon selection mode. This strategy is essential for very quick moving, wall-clinging enemies. I did not have to use this technique all the time, though, and against many of the enemies I could take cover and pop out to shoot much like in Gears of War. The tech and biotic powers are where the real fun comes in, though. Once you (or your party members) have access to these powers you have much more interesting options available to you (take out an enemy's shields, turn one enemy on another, push/throw an enemy, create a mini-black hole, etc.). You acquire additional human and alien party members are you progress - their interesting stories and motivations are revealed as the game is played. I really enjoyed the level of immersion and the depth of the characters as well as the creative and detailed environments. I've put about 30 hours into this game and finished all the main missions and side-quests. Many of the optional side quests lack a unique, polished story and reuse structures but there is plenty of original and amazing content (about 20 hours worth) in the main storyline. Overall, this is a great, one-of-a-kind game and I cannot wait for the sequel.

Super Awesome Game
5 Star Review   By member Bforprez - Jan 8, 2008

Strengths: Free choice, Requires strategy, Great graphics, Takes a long time to beat.

All the positive reviews are correct about this game. It's full of so many different cool aspects- the graphics, the levels, the game play, the strategy required, and the story line that the game just keeps getting better and better the longer you play it. If you have any doubts about getting the game put them aside and try it you shouldn't be sorry you did.

RPG of the year
4 Star Review   By member mkernan - Jan 8, 2008

Strengths: excellent graphics, pretty good story, well-designed conversation system

Weakness: combat is a little tedious

Before I begin, let me just say that if you loved Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire, just go out and pick up a copy of Mass Effect now because you'll love it. Any RPG or action RPG fan should have a blast playing through this game. That's not to say its perfect, but it is a really great game and easily the best RPG out this year. Mass Effect tells a good, but not altogether great or unique story and puts the player in situations where you really feel like your decisions matter. The combat system is completely real-time, though you will frequently need to stop the action to switch between weapons and powers, which does get a bit annoying but isn't too big of a concern overall. 2007 was an incredible year for the 360 and I'd easily put Mass Effect on my top-five list in a heartbeat.

Sci-fi opera falls short of its potential
3 Star Review   By member PhillyDWilliams - Dec 28, 2007

Strengths: Complex dialogue system makes talking to NPCs fun, Beautiful graphics, Ambitious scale

Weakness: Save system, inventory system, load times, dropped textures & framerate issues

Mass Effect was probably one of the most anticipated games for the 360 for the fall of 2007. It was touted to be a wonderfully immersive sci-fi rpg of epic scale with jaw dropping graphics and a rewarding combat system. I'd have to say it succeeded in being a fun adventure, but fell short of its potential. The sheer scale of the game was what I was most excited about, only to find most of it caged in journal entries about the Mass Effect universe. Instead of experiencing it all first hand, I spent most of the time reading about it. I had hoped to travel the star systems, seeing what each planet had to offer. Instead you could only land on one planet in each system and it was a only a small grid with little reason to explore. Bases and enemy strongholds felt identical to one another and side missions were redundant. Most of the other issues are technical. The save system is very frustrating. You can switch the auto save feature between occasional and non existant, but you'll quickly learn the best method is to just do it yourself, and do it often. The inventory system is horrid and couldn't make it more inconvenient to sell equipment. The load times, dropped textures & framerate issues all combine to make the experience jarring at times, ruining the immersion the game tries so hard to create. There is plenty here to gush about though. The story, characters, voice acting, & dialogue system are all superb. The game centers on what type of commander you will be and the relationships you create. I would've never thought it possible, but you'll actually enjoy going around to talk to everyone just to see where the conversation will go. Still, it feels like Mass Effect would have been better if they had just stripped away the fluff and stuck with the main story, because for all the extra content they put in, it just felt like a waste of space. I guess the problem is with my expectations, but the game could have been so much more, and that is its main problem.

Mass Effect...one of the best games in years
5 Star Review   By member zmonkay - Dec 27, 2007

Strengths: Combat, graphics, voice acting, story

Weakness: Elevators. Apparently, in the future, not only are elevators nearly the only way to get around, they are also much slower than in the present.

Did you like KOTOR? Yes? Go buy this. No? Go buy this. For those that love a great story, with fun combat, and a cinimatic style and Hollywood level of voice acting, there is no better game. Seriously, instead of saying "Hey, look at that thing, I wonder if I can shoot it?", you say "Hey, look at that thing, I wonder if I can have a conversation with it". And then, if you want, you can likely end up shooting it anyways. Playing this game is like playing through a good episode of Star Trek or one of the Star Wars movies. There are just so many good things about this game, it's not even funny. It's just plain fun to play. And about the elevators, I suppose it's better than staring at "Now Loading" every time you move to a new area, but hopefully in the sequels (it's a trilogy) load times are reduced so elevator rides are shorter. I do like that they play news feeds or the characters in the elevator have conversations relative to what has recently happened though. It's a nice touch.

Best RPG of 2007
5 Star Review   By member ogermino - Dec 20, 2007

Strengths: Engrossing story, excellent graphics

Weakness: Interior layout repetition (see below)

Mass Effect puts you in the middle of the most significant series of events in the galaxy in thousands of years. The choices you make, the actions you take, affect the fate of humanity - no, all life in the galaxy. At least, that's how the advertisements for the game go. And from playing the game, I'd have to agree with that assessment. It truly does feel like every major decision you make has a huge impact. To back up the well-written story, Mass Effect has some great graphics, especially the ship designs. The only real complaint I have with the game is that the interior areas of each planet tend to become repetitive (there are only a handful of basic layouts, with various props attempting to make them look different). But with that aside, the positives of the game are so much greater. Enough so that I voted for the game as Xbox's RPG of the year.

Mass Effect the next RPG
5 Star Review   By member tombking - Dec 16, 2007

Strengths: Game play, Roleplaying, Skills, Dialogue

Weakness: Long load time. Too much elevators.

I got this game on the first day it came out. I play it for 4 hours straight and I love every minute of it. The whole game seems like a movie where you participate in the decision making, and get to see what happened.

Best sci-fi since Star Wars
5 Star Review   By member mchenoweth16 - Dec 4, 2007

Strengths: Incredible character dialog with great action and Hollywood quality story

Weakness: some texture loading and glitches

This is another example of why I prefer games over movies. The story and characters are done so well, that it blows away 90% of what you can find in movies now. The way the characters talk to each other is done extremely well and this puts you in control of decisions. The action is very deep and is the best you'll find in any RPG. The graphics are among the best available now with the exception of textures occasionally taking a while to load as seen in other games like Halo 2 and Gears of War. The sound effects are superb and match the high quality of the voice acting. You should not miss this game.

Great Game But Bugs Hinder It Slightly
5 Star Review   By member markc72 - Nov 28, 2007

Strengths: -Great Facial Graphics, Engrossing Story, Many Hours of Gameplay

Weakness: Frame rate hiccups, clunky controls.

The games premise is been done really well. Some amazing graphics on the cut scene conversations with the people you come across in the game. It's like playing a movie but your playing a video game. The graphics in game are good but not great and take a hit from how massive this game is. Frame rate hiccups hinder the game play at times, but is bearable albeit not acceptable in a next gen game. The fighting sequences can be burdensome but keep in mind that this is an RPG and not a Gears Of War like played game. It is nice to be able to battle in real time instead of a turn based like the KOTOR and Jade Empire games. All these problems aside, the game is simply amazing and will keep you busy well over 30 hours if you do all the main and side quests. I find myself actually listening to the interactions in the cut scenes instead of passing them up. In this game, you have access to different universes throughout your perilous journey. Some planets in them are inhabitable, but might be unlocked in future updates. I have only played for about 5 hours, but the game play can be a bit tough in some areas and you must save your game or you will have to do it all over again. I highly suggest you get this game and you should get pass the problems with some of the gameplay mechanics.
