Description
Crime is 'the new black. The world teeters on the verge of anarchy. Law enforcement recruitment has plummeted - no one wants to be in the firing line. All forms of policing across the globe have united to form the Agency. But still it's not enough. The Peacekeepers are barely able to keep what little peace there is.Desperate times, desperate measures... The Agency is exploiting the work of disgraced scientist Doctor Baltazar Czernenko (rumored to now be in the employ of Shai-Gen). His underground eugenics program uses a near lethal cocktail of cutting edge technology and military grade pharmaceuticals to propel the human race to a whole new level. Now, that same program is being used to create agents of justice: superior to conventional law enforcers in every way, and capable of rapid physiological evolution.Rival factions - the gangs - are taking over increasing amounts of territory. The Agency is making a last stand in the heart of Pacific City in a high-security compound known as the Keep. Access is restricted and guarded by Peacekeepers.Around the world, hundreds of thousands of new law enforcement agents will be coming online, each one capable of replacing an entire police force. These potent prototypes are ready, willing, and able to use unreasonable force to wipe all crime from the face of the Earth. With your help, this will be the ultimate crackdown.

Crackdown
4 Star Review  GameZone - Feb 12, 2007

Well, here we are - a next generation Grand Theft Auto-style game that was actually developed by the creator of GTA, David Jones. The legacy of GTA blew up when GTA III was released for PS2 by offering gamers an almost limitless number of gameplay possibilities. Crackdown for the Xbox 360 keeps the near limitless gameplay possibilities but ditches the whole gangster/mafia theme of GTA. Instead of being the bad guy, Crackdown has you snuffing out the three gangs of Pacific City. You’re not the bad guy anymore but you won’t miss it because your Enforcer should have more than enough machismo to keep you entertained.

Crackdown | Xbox 360 - Platinum Hits
4 Star Review  productwiki.com - Apr 16, 2010

A third person free roaming action game by Real Time World studios, who was founded by the lead designer on Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2. Players assume the role of an agent working for the agency and have been tasked to take down the various gangs that have plagued the ultra violent city. Crackdown is a unique take on the genre as its the first game to completely forgo any kind of story and focuses entirely on the gameplay. This freedom opens up the gameworld allowing the player to combat the gangs in any order, and any way they see fit. Similar to Gears of War Crackdown allows for online co-op throughout the entirety of the experience. At the beginning of the game players choose the kind of agent they want which is purely aesthetic and has no result on the way the agent is controlled. The gameplay customization comes ... PROS: (1) Amazing draw distance (2) Jumping around the roofs of buildings is a lot of fun (3) Online co-op is great (4) Achievements are well designed (5) Increase skills over the course of the game ... CONS: (1) Combat is not satisfying (2) Repetitive mission structure (3) Orbs can be really difficult to find, particularly when you only have a few left

Crackdown 2
5 Star Review

Strengths: An open world 3rd person shooter, ORBS!!!!!1

Weakness: Give me more!!!

I was primely a FPS fan. But this game open my eyes. Even though this game is 3rd person, it has so much to do. GTA Doesn't compare with crackdown! You get to jump over buildings, pick up cars, steal cars, and fine those glowing ORBS!!!!

Crackdown stands high above GTA clones simply because it doesn't play like one.
4 Star Review   By member KasumiFuji - Dec 2, 2007

Strengths: A unique graphical style. Excellent sound design. Large open ended world. Collecting things in this game is actually enjoyable. Amazing draw distance. Full Xbox Live Coop. Creative achievements.

Weakness: Story is almost nonexistent. Missions consist of just killing the bad guys. Enemy bosses are rather weak. The announcer, although good, is quite repetitive and off the mark most of the time.

Often erroneously compared to the Grand Theft Auto series, and even Saint's Row, Crackdown distinguishes itself from the rest of the opened ended pack by having one thing that all those others do not; Verticality. The ability to scale buildings at will simply by leaping from ledge to ledge and eventually rooftop to rooftop is quite an accomplishment. This alone would be enough for most gamers to take notice, but there is much more. The developers have taken the old collect everything motif, and transformed it into something that is actually fun. Collecting agility orbs scattered throughout the city in hard to reach places is a game within itself. You'll actually want to collect every orb you see for the sheer enjoyment of it. As an added bonus the orbs also power up your character allowing you to jump higher which makes seemingly impossible to reach locations accessible. Determined gamers will take their skills to the limit by standing on the flagpole at the top of the agency tower which is the tallest building in the city. The view from there is simply breathtaking with the whole city being visible for miles and is a testament to the technology that went into crafting this game. With all the good there are a few areas where Crackdown doesn't fair as well. The portion that is the most underdeveloped is the driving. The vehicle controls are for the most part tight and responsive, and there are achievements for doing interesting things with the vehicles. However, there are very few other reasons to drive around since leaping across the city is more useful. That really isn't a big deal, but Crackdown's annoying and inaccurate announcer is. Sometimes his comments just aren't appropriate for certain situations and he repeats the same dialogue over and over. There also are only a few ways to dispatch your enemies. Shooting and throwing things is nice but I would have liked to see more physical attacks than just kicking. However, from several hundred feet in the air the most effective way of attacking is with projectile weapons so it is easy to see why physical attacks took a backseat. This does have its downsides because once you get the rocket launcher; the game is pretty much over. You are so powerful almost nothing can stop you. Even bosses put up little resistance since they are just normal thugs with bigger health bars. Super villains with the same powers as the hero and a more flushed out story would have provided a much more complete package. These caveats however do little to detract from how much fun it truly is to play this game. It is easy on the eyes sporting an interesting art design that must be seen on an HDTV to be fully appreciated. Sound design is definitely an area where this game excels with big explosions and a beat heavy soundtrack so make sure you have a decent surround system. It will make finding the agility orbs easier and this is one of the few games that really hits Low Frequency Bass. Did I forget to mention that this entire game can be played cooperatively over Xbox live? Once considered the bonus you get when you buy the Halo 3 beta, Crackdown's unique gameplay and feature set go a long way to living up to the next-gen moniker. Top it all off with an inexpensive price, and available downloadable content and this game will be a welcome addition to your game library... just so long as you don't have a fear of heights.

Crackdown (XB360)
3 Star Review   By member cotebryan - Nov 19, 2007

Strengths: (1) Excellent presentation/graphic style (2) Provides a different version of sanbox/open ended gameplay with unique attribute upgrades

Weakness: (1) Repetitive mission structure

Crackdown is a good looking, fun little sandbox-style diversion for the XBOX 360. The action is rendered in a cell shaded/illustrative look that is very appealing and looks great in action. It is also very entertaining to play in different ways in order to upgrade different abilities. The environment and NPC interaction really gets better and better as you gain better abilities and increase in attributes. You can, of course, jack different vehicles as is common in these types of games but the overall lack of compelling narrative or missions is a disappointment.

Strengths: Great Story, Fun Game, Action Packed

Weakness: Graphics arent the best

Highly unique game. Extremely fun in its replay value and just a great all around game. I had alot of fun collecting all the orbs and upgrading my character. And taking down all of the other gangs. Futuristic GTA Clone
3 Star Review   By member mikejudge2k1 - Aug 29, 2007

Strengths: Fun Game, Lots to Do. If your a fan of Grand Theft Auto and Saints Row this game will help tide you over till the next GTA arrives early next year. This game is set in the future.

Weakness: Not especially long. Saints Row is better in my opinion.

I think if your looking for your GTA fix then this is the game for you. Big Sandbox to roam around in. Your character is a futuristic cop with superpowers. Fun concept. I recommend it.

Crackdown Xbox 360
4 Star Review   By member jjz203 - Aug 24, 2007

Strengths: Massive and open free roaming world. Fun and addictive sand box gameplay that lets you jump like the hulk and run like the flash.

Weakness: There's really no story. Not exactly next gen graphics. Can be a little too easy at times.

I bought Crackdown thinking that it would be just mindless fun and doing like what the trailer and previews showed, jumping from rooftop to rooftop just shooting the bad guys. The game pretty much delivered that expection in aces and man is it fun just going all over the place looking for the blue orbs (it's hard to describe how fun and obsessive it is to hunt for every one of these blue pulsing orbs). The graphics are alright, but nothing close to what I expected from a next gen console game, but they're not ugly either. It's like a cel-shading look to it which is alright, but it is a beautiful sight to see when you blow up a vehicle or other things. Overall, I would say for those looking for a GTA style game with a much more open ended world and less story driving, this is it. For those wanting more story and a game with a point to it, this is probably a rental. Either way, everyone should give crackdown at least a once-over to see just how fun it is jumping around rooftops.

Good Game, few flaws
4 Star Review   By member sic62 - Aug 23, 2007

Strengths: open world, many collectibles, lots of things to do, plenty of downloadable content

Weakness: slowdown at times

This is a really good game, definitely a game that every xbox owner should have. It is a cross between grand theft auto and superhero games. Only problem is the occasional slow down when a lot is on the screen.

Free Roaming Fun
4 Star Review   By member thebob101 - Jul 21, 2007

Strengths: Gameplay, graphics, achivements, Downloadable Content

Weakness: Nothing

Most folk bought Crackdown for the Halo 3 Beta, but the actual game holds up very well. The gameplay is very open ended with plenty of cool missions to complete. The graphics have a comic book feel, but really don't effect the gameplay at all. Now that the Halo 3 Beta is over and the price has dropped to $39.99, I suggest picking up a copy. There are plenty of 360 achievements and the downloadable content keeps the gameplay fresh.

Crackdown Review
5 Star Review   By member edhoo - Jul 1, 2007

Strengths: Wide open gameplay

Weakness: Story

Crackdown is a similar game to Grand Theft Auto, but it is hard to compare them. Crackdown features heroes with super strength and agility so they can pick up cars and jump over buildings. The game is very fun and you can mess around for hours. The only let down is that the story part is pretty short but there is still plenty to do once you complete it.

The Downlow on Crackdown
3 Star Review   By member Admiral_Ackbar - Jun 29, 2007

Strengths: Looks good. Okay gameplay. Almost like a futuristic GTA. Almost.

Weakness: All the parts are good but nothing is excellent.

Crackdown is a very good game but there isn't any bit it does excellent enough to make the game stand above and beyond the other games it's trying to emulate. There's good character development, good combat, good side missions, good open-endedness, good graphics. But none of it takes a step beyond. This is a good game to try but afterwards it's probably trade bait. Also, the Halo Beta is over by the time of this posting.

Cleaner sandbox game than GTA
3 Star Review   By member mchenoweth16 - May 29, 2007

Strengths: Good graphics and new take on the sandbox game

Weakness: Cussing prevents recommendation for kids, the novel tasks run short quickly

This is one of the most unique games that I've played. You take on the roll of a technically enhanced cop who is tasked with cleaning up the city of its plague of gangs. The graphics are good for a game like this and there is not as much R-rated material as in GTA; or so I've heard. The gameplay is entertaining for a while, but the cussing does not allow me to enjoy this with my kids; one of the main decision points in my purchases.

Most fun since GTA
5 Star Review   By member StudentSurplus - May 29, 2007

Strengths: Sandbox style gameplay, massive environment, many play styles

Weakness: Lack of same console co-op.

Crackdown, from the makers of the original Grand Theft Auto series is a futuristic Robo-cop-esque sandbox style game that allows you as a future law enforcer to crackdown on three gangs/factions that are running Pacific City. As you play you gain strength, agility, and other properties that let you jump to ridiculous heights, run faster than cars, and shoot your enemies down on the fly. This game offers great replay value, amazing environments in a cell shaded motif, and plenty of fun!

Easy fun that's addictive!
4 Star Review   By member BoomChagalaga - Mar 21, 2007

Strengths: Easy to build up your character in athletics, shooting and explosives. Good sized three dimensional environment where your imagination is the limit on what you can try.

Weakness: I found driving difficult at first; killed a lot of civilians on sidewalks. Wish there was some drivers training or videos to get the hang of it. Background street profanity and comments (why?)

This is not the best game I have played nor is the concept, character development or environment original BUT, this game is still lots of fun. I have spent hours trying to find all the Orbs and building my character in lieu of killing bad guys. I skipped killing some bosses to kill the top guys to see if I could do it, and I could, which made me think the game was too easy. You can jack anycar you see and go for a ride; shoot bad guys on site, climb buildings, jump from one building to another and shoot while you are in the air. Although fairly easy, it is just good killing fun. Graphics are cartoonish. If you are looking for a third/first person shooter (you look over the characters shoulder) and like developing your character in an interactive environment, buy the game...you won't be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a hardcore live action game with in your face blood like "GoW" this game may not be what you want. All in all, I would say it is worth the money.
