4.5 Star Review  GameZone - Sep 14, 2007

To say that the Xbox 360 is lacking with Japanese role-playing games would be an understatement. With only one title – that being Enchanted Arms-- in the genre after two years of being on store shelves, the Xbox 360 desperately needs support. Microsoft is trying to remedy the situation with Blue Dragon. What makes it so special? Let’s start with the fact that it’s the first title in their beautiful partnership with Mistwalker Studios. Don’t mistake Mistwalker Studios as the only developer on board; Mistwalker hired the helping hand of Artoon for the bulk of the load while Mistwalker acted more of an overseer of Blue Dragon.

Blue Dragon
3.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - May 20, 2009

Blue Dragon is Microsofts attempt at capturing a portion of the traditional Japanese RPG audience that is dominated by Square-Enixs Dragon Quest series. Microsoft put together an all-star development cast that includes some of the main minds behind the biggest JRPG franchises in the world. Hironobu Sakaguchi, who is the creator of the Final Fantasy series, acts as producer and writer. Akira Toriyama, the man behind Dragon Ball, Naruto and character designs for the Dragon Quest series, acts as character and enemy designer for Blue Dragon. Finally, Nobuo Uematsu, who is responsible for most of Final Fantasys soundtracks, handles all music composition. Artoon, the studio behind Blinx and other non-famous games, handled most of the programming and day-to-day development. Story Blue Dragon follows a standard tale that sees the main character, Shu, and his friends try to save the world from a maniacal villain bent on destroying everything they love. Along ... PROS: (1) Fantastic Pixar-like graphics (2) Substantial length (50 hours) (3) Charming world and environments (4) Endearing characters (5) Boss music is awesome and pumps you up ... Blue Dragon (XBox 360)
4 Star Review   By member keelie - Jul 10, 2008

Strengths: Graphics, gameplay

Weakness: Music

Blue Dragon is a old school Japanese RPG game for XBox 360. The game is fun and enjoyable, although the presentation may suggest its original appeal towards the younger population. The game takes some time to get into the story but it's really interesting. Overall, the game is very well done, with nice character designs and story development. Graphics is more anime looking and serves the purpose well. However, music is repetitive and the same tunes can be heard over and over during battles. Consider this game can easily takes 50+ hours to finish, the repetitive music can be annoying sometimes. Having said that, Blue Dragon is still a great game to play. It has visuals, a good story and a nice battle system that goes well for both adults and children.

Unleash The Dragon If You Like Anime
4 Star Review   By member nimblebunny - Apr 13, 2008

Strengths: Visually stunning cut scenes (story is epic, if not original). Simple gameplay for casual gamers, while still being appealing to most hardcore RPG fans. Voice acting is decent (Japanese is an option).

Weakness: Requires great time investment (50+ hours). No side missions. Slow paced. The same song plays repeatedly when fighting bosses. Designed with a Japanese audience in mind. Maro = Jar Jar Binks.

This is a great game for RPG or anime fans. It works well for both kids and adults, but the story presentation might seem a little childish for some adults. Overall, its a great game if you have the time to invest and you can handle increasingly annoying repetition in music and battle animations.

Blue Dragon (resubmitted review from February of '08)
3 Star Review   By member neschamp - Apr 1, 2008

Strengths: The graphics are clean and bright. There is a lot to do in the game.

Weakness: Unfortunately, most of the gameplay is completely boring. The soundtrack is poor and the story is cliche. Triple shot of suckiness!

Blue Dragon is developer Mistwalker's old school RPG epic (it spans 3 DVDs). It figures to be Microsoft's answer to the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest role playing franchises. Three key figures contributed to the development of the game - Hironobu Sakaguchi (founder of Squaresoft and creator of Final Fantasy), Akira Toriyama (creator of Dragon Ball and character designer for Dragon Quest) and Nobuo Uematsu (famous video game composer). I hoped that the combined efforts of these creators would result in a classic game. That didn't happen. Blue Dragon is a typical JRPG in every way and as a result is unenjoyable. Gamers want to experience something new each time out. They don't want the same thing repackaged and thrown back at them year after year. I would say that it is safe for most XBOX 360 owners to pass on Blue Dragon.

Next-Gen RPG that\'s not so next-gen
3 Star Review   By member danielmcgrath - Feb 20, 2008

Strengths: Beautiful visuals, occasional nice soundtrack

Weakness: Story, gameplay, exploration, characters

Blue Dragon is a feast for the eyes, I wish I could say such things about the actual game. It's boring, the characters are not interesting, there's no development, they look lame to boot. The battle music, especially the boss, is annoying j-rock that verges on unlistenable. It's an average RPG, with an average story, and average battle system. It's being sold at $39 most places, and I'd say this is a reasonable price, and for the money, you might possibly enjoy it; I didn't. Did I beat it

Blue Dragon (360)
4 Star Review   By member shrike424242 - Jan 29, 2008

Strengths: Impressive graphics, long gameplay length, great character design

Weakness: Slow to start story, bad music

Blue Dragon is an old-school JRPG on the Xbox 360. Covering three DVD's, it's a very long game in the best JRPG traditions, though done up with great graphics. The well-done character design shows clearly, though it takes a while to get into the story and really get interesting. The music, however, leaves a lot to be desired, and it's a bit of a distraction at times. RPG fans with so few choices on the 360 should look this one over, with the time to spend on such a game.

Blue Dragon
5 Star Review   By member mojave - Jan 1, 2008

Strengths: Excellent Japanese RPG for the 360

My only hesitation about buying an Xbox 360 was that it would lack games like this that were so prevalent on the Playstation 2 (and presumably would be on the PS3 later as well). However, knowing that Blue Dragon was coming out helped me make that plunge into the 360. The game did not disappoint. Although it has gotten just average reviews, I will have to disagree with most of them. This is an excellent game that is just what I wanted to see. It is a fairly standard turn-based Japanese Role-Playing game which means young characters with spiky hair, turn-based battles with weird monsters, and all the other things you might expect. However, if you like that sort of thing this is an excellent implementation. While it doesn't quite reach the epic status of something like Dragon Quest VIII, it comes close. There are a few improvements over the standard PS2 JRPG. For one, the game being on a next-gen system means the graphics are amazing. While some areas don't look particularly impressive, there are others (such as Mural Town) that will blow you away. Also, instead of random encounters you can see all the enemies on the battlefield, which is always a nice thing so you can avoid encounters if you are just trying to get somewhere fast. Also, you can learn a power that allows you to "bump off" lower-leveled creatures and even get skill points (though not experience points). The skill system also is quite enjoyable as it allows you to level up various skills (such as the ability to bump off lower-leveled creatures as well as different types of other magic) while still retaining the skills you have obtained previously. You can assign any of the trained skills that you have to create very powerful hybrid characters. Another nice touch is that there is not a boatload of weapons and armor to keep track of. You have a small allotment of item slots that can enhance your character and this keeps it nice and simple allowing you to concentrate on powering up your skills. The Xbox 360 achievement system also adds a bit more to the game as trying for the achievement points gives you a bit more incentive to go beyond the standard story. In fact, you will need to play quite a bit after the story ends to get them all. I bought Blue Dragon at release for the full $60 and didn't regret that decision one bit. It is now on sale frequently for $30-$40 and at that price is a must buy. This game needs support so we will continue to get these types of games on the 360!

Strengths: Lots of gameplay. Looks great.

Weakness: Terrible, Terrible combat music.

Blue dragon is a nice rpg/adventure game with a good story and some meorable vilans. It looks good and is familyf riendly. My biggist complaint is that it has some terrible, terrible music. Other than that, it's okay for an RPG. You at leats get your money's worth since there's a lot to do.

4 Star Review   By member jch302 - Nov 5, 2007

Strengths: fun, old school

Weakness: a little immature

Blue Dragon is an old-school RPG fan's dream game. I enjoyed the game but it was a little childish. If the game was more adult oriented, it would have been a great game. The graphics are great, and blue dragon demonstrates what an RPG could do on a next-gen system.

Finally A decent RPG for the 360!
4 Star Review   By member Spoon_Si - Oct 28, 2007

Strengths: Amazing limit break moves (Specail Attacks), Great character design & well thought of story

Weakness: A tad bit on the short side for an RPG, Game has a bit too much kiddy theme.

Blue Dragon for the box 360 is 1 of the few most wanted games for the xbox 360 + bein a RPG is a bonus. Produced from a new company mistwalker (ex producer of Final Fantasy) w/ amazing charter design from the popular Dragon Ball anime TV series. Nothing comes to mind as this game is goin to be GOLD. The game picks up fast, and gets you hooked, whe battles are more active then your standard turn-base RPG games, which makes gameplay interesting, what i found simply beautiful was the crazy limit breaks each character does, each move was so well thought of w/ something you expect from a Anime series. Only problems I had w/ this game was it bein to short, I complete the game less then 30 hr. *hoping for a sequal here*, Storyline picks up slow & ended in whimper, not as epic as I liked it would be. Great Game none the less. 4/5 Stars

Blue Dragon
3 Star Review   By member jjz203 - Oct 19, 2007

Strengths: Great old school Japanese RPG feel and look. Pretty lengthy quest and storyline. Great music/soundtrack. Good anime graphics.

Weakness: Slow start to the story. Hard to really enjoy the game unless you devote a lot of time getting into the story. Average battle system and a "been there" sort of feeling.

Blue Dragon has been a long awaited game for me since I heard a lot of the talent that brought us the Final Fantasy series is in this game. The music producer, the game producer and art director are all top level and well known so this must be a great game right? Not quite. After playing this game for a few days now, the story is finally starting to pick up and get more interesting. But for those who want instant gratification and fun, be warned, it will require some time and commitment to really get into. It's got a decent battle system and great Japanese anime graphics and great soundtrack, but the story is hard to get into at first. Since this is a role playing game, I think that the story is a vital part of the game. With that said, I recommend this game to anyone who really likes RPGs and has the patience and time to get into this. Once you do get into it, you will enjoy it, but persevere through the first couple of hours.

Classic RPG Gameplay....
4 Star Review   By member AAnimedude - Oct 1, 2007

Strengths: +Beautiful, almost Pixar-like graphics +A long, 3 disk game

Weakness: -Way too easy -Terrible voice acting -Simplistic (and dull) story

Here is a pleasant surprise! On a console some nickname the "shooterbox", Blue Dragon arrives as an old-school savior from some of the original minds behind final fantasy. But note, that this game does not follow in this legendary series footsteps. Instead it harkens back to the old-school series Dragon Quest. The story is simple. The voice acting is terrible. The game can be far too easy for the seasoned RPG gamer. However, this game represents a charming and beautiful tribute to old-school gaming. This game will probably bomb due to the xbox 360's demographics. But if your in the mood for some light, simple fun, give Blue Dragon some of your time.

Bland Dragon
2 Star Review   By member thebob101 - Sep 28, 2007

Strengths: Dragon watching

Weakness: Graphics

I would of expected more from the likes that created Blue Dragon for the Microsoft Xbox 360. One of the best aspects of the game is watching your dragons do battle, but that can only sustain gameplay for so long. The minigames do mix things up, but not enough to change my attitude towards the game. The class system allows the users to customize their characters in endless ways, but unfortunately, it also turns your party members into a generic blend of spells and skills The graphics are bland and the story is quite boring. Overall, this is a very disappointing RPG and not worth the money it is being sold for.
