UEFA Champions League 2006-2007
4 Star Review  GameZone - Apr 2, 2007

Soccer may not be the most popular sport in North America, but between EA and Konami, it’s safe to say that a sufficient number of ‘futbol’ titles still get released every year. Numbers have not exactly equated to quality, though, and with the exception of the Winning Eleven series, most offerings have left little to be desired. Luckily, for EA, this years Winning Eleven for the Xbox 360 didn’t exactly get the next-gen makeover that many were hoping for, so there’s definitely room for an outsider to snag its crown. Enter UEFA Champions League 2006-2007: EA’s most recent entry, and first real attempt at doing something creative in the sport.

UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 for XBOX360
3 Star Review   By member bayarea2012 - Apr 30, 2008

Strengths: Good graphics and excellent sound effect. Card system adds another dimension to the game.

Weakness: Not many different game modes to chose from. Also the actual gameplay doesn't improve much compare with the previous EA soccer franchise.

With UEFA, you'll get a really neat idea that's rather foreign to soccer -- using trading cards to build a team from nothing to something. For the hardcore, dedicated player, this could be incredibly appealing. For the guy who just wants a really good soccer game? Not so much. Other than the interesting new league setting (UEFA championships) and the new card system (Ultimate Teams), EA's newest game doesn't make any significant or even moderate leaps in the fundamental soccer, and it's here that the game needed the most work.

Strengths: Great sound and close up graphics. Magic the Gathering-style card-based play a good touch. Easy to get started and the learning curve is fantastic. Commentary and fans add great realism.

Weakness: Graphics during regular gameplay could be improved. Requires European team and player knowledge to truly get excited about the matches.

EA Sports knows how to make great sports games, but unless you are familiar with the European teams, you probably won't get as excited as you would be when playing players you know on teams you love. Not being a soccer fan, I found this game to be fairly user-friendly. It can be difficult to score at first, but once you master the controls, you'll be scoring goals rather easily over time. I would like to see more close up gameplay and, hopefully, the next installment (UEFA Euro 2008- released May 19, 2008) should deliver. Card-based play is great if you are interested in spending time on that aspect. If you are not a soccer fan, particularly a European soccer fan, then you might want to pass on this one.

3 Star Review   By member narinchem - Nov 4, 2007

Strengths: Best sound and visuals in a soccer game to date; buy and trade player cards

Weakness: European teams only; not too many game modes

UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 is the fourth EA soccer game for the XBOX and has by far the best sounds and visuals of any so far. This game is limited in the sense that you can only choose from European club teams to play with. You basically set up a team and play against other European clubs in the Champions League competition for European club supremacy. This game seems very stripped down and doesn't have the multitude of game modes that you find in the other FIFA games. However, there is a new twist that you will find in this game. You can now collect and trade player cards. You can then use these cards to build the ultimate team. This function can get to be very addicting and makes the game a worthwhile purchase. If you're a fan of soccer and don't mind that this game is limited to European clubs only, then check out UEFA Champions League 2006-2007.
