Shrek The Third
3.5 Star Review  GameZone - May 16, 2007

When the original Shrek first came out, it won many people over due to its adult humor and various situations the characters were put in. What I mean by this is that the movie was a humorous cartoon that children can enjoy, but it also was funny to adults due to its undertones, and this continued in the second movie as well. Well, the third movie is about to be released and with it a game by the same name. The story for this game is similar to the movie, and here is the brief outline: The King of Far Far Away, Fiona’s father, has suddenly died, and now Shrek has inherited the throne.

Shrek The Third
3 Star Review   By member mj_f - May 3, 2008

Strengths: Lighthearted brawler/platformer that makes decent use of the license

Weakness: Graphics somewhat bland, game is a bit buggy and lacks tight control

Shrek The Third is a typical movie tie-in game. It is competant but nothing special. I played this game in it's entirety and collected all 1000 achievement points. For the 10 hours or so this took the game was enjoyable. It probably won't have much replay value afterwards, however. You play as Shrek and rest of the cast (Donkey, Puss, Fiona, and a few others). In general, you will be restricted to a specific character during each chapter of the game. The gameplay consists of brawling with some light platforming elements. The brawling is executed well enough with the ability to use basic attacks, strong attacks, special movies, and extra special "fairy dust" attacks that you can unleash after filling a meter (by breaking barrels and defeating enemies). These are specific to each character so there is some variety seen during the course of the game. Shrek and Fiona also have a special Ogre Power attack that can take out several enemies. Each chapter consists of getting from one end to the other while battling hordes of common enemies, a few minibosses and the occasional main boss. There are also a few stages of catapult shooting to break up the action. It is the platforming stages where the game can really get frustrating. The framerate tends to be poor so the animation is not smooth. Also the camera, as is so common with games like this, does not always show the best angles. These elements combine to make some of the platforming aspects a but harder than they should be. Throw in a generally buggy experience and it can be downright frustrating. More than once I found myself inside a building texture and couldn't get out. Fortunately the platforming is fairly minor as the game is mostly about the fighting. The cutscenes are done in a paper-cutout puppet show fashion and are very well done and humorous. There are some minigames playable with multiple players but the main game is strictly a single-player affair.

Fun with Shrek & Friends
3 Star Review   By member bunty7 - Feb 27, 2008

Strengths: Cute chracters with nice animations, Nice platformer

Weakness: Not much challenge

This is a nice platformer with some action elements. You can play as various characters & each one has their special moves. I found the game fun if you play it in bits & pieces. There is not enough challenge to keep it interesting for long durations. There is not much replay value unless for achievements sake you want to replay levels & find each & every hidden object. The achievements are not hard but can take time. Music is soothing & animations are good. This is one of those games which can be enjoyed by both kids & adults especially if you are a fan of Shrek. Nothing new here - still this is a game worth a look if you find it at bargain price

Great for children, so/so for adults
3 Star Review   By member mark921 - Feb 26, 2008

Strengths: Faithful to the 'Shrek' themes / humor, simple gameplay, above average graphics in some areas

Weakness: Not much there for anyone wanting a 'deeper' gameplay experience. Multiplayer graphics average to poor.

My 8-year old daughter plays this game often and thoroughly enjoys it. She is a big Shrek fan and loves the recognizable characters / voices. It is definately a more simple title that younger children can enjoy due to the simple controls and more linear gameplay. I sometimes play the co-op battles with her - some are more fun than others, but they all have a very basic feel to them. 1 other minor issue: the multiplayer 'battles' seem to drop in graphical quality from the 'main' game.

Shrek 3rd for Xbox 360
3 Star Review   By member DeLKay - Nov 24, 2007

Strengths: A simple, straight fwd, easy to navigate thru levels: Good game for a young (5-8) kid.

Weakness: No co-op play, graphics is not up to Xbox 360 standard.

This is a very "uneventful" game for any gamer > 10 yrs old. The one that you'd play once (take about 4 hours to go thru the game), and probably not play it ever again. But for younger kids they will like it, 'cause it's pretty straight forward, hard to die, easy-to-find treasures, it gives you the starting point where the character die (so you don't have to start over ... This game is not worth the retail price (49.99), but if you have a little kid, you might as well get one, since it's pretty much on sale everywhere for less than 20.

Good fun!
3 Star Review   By member rosie123 - Nov 17, 2007

Strengths: Love the characters and sequence!

Weakness: Limited Control

My son loves it! He's a huge fan, so I knew this would no disappoint. However, there is some limit on the control, but overall good little game. He enjoys it and that's all that really matters.

Fun Kids Game
3 Star Review   By member mchenoweth16 - Nov 8, 2007

Strengths: Shrek world and humor, good graphics

Weakness: The usual platform gameplay

As most kids are fans of the Shrek movies, most kids will probably also enjoy this game. The same quirky characters with all of the humor intact are in here. The graphics are a pretty good representation of the film, but the gameplay is much the same as other platform games. Given all of this, if you or your kids aren't fans of the movie, you probably ought to just rent this one.

Lots o' fluff, not a lot of substance
3 Star Review   By member javadrinker - Aug 12, 2007

Strengths: Familiar characters, funny sequences

Weakness: Tedious game play, choppy graphics at times, limited controller action, no real multiplayer option.

This is a cute game to have if you have kids that loved the Shrek movies. That's pretty much all it has going for it. Hardcore gamers will find the gameplay fairly dull. Interaction of the characters through the controller was tough at times and things like jumping are difficult because of the weird spatial angles you run into now and then. The game still had its fun moments though, especially the humorous filler between stages. My biggest complaint was the fact that there was no real multiplayer action. The game box says 1-2 players but the multiplayer interaction is limited to minigames that are separate from the main game. It would have been fun for 2 players to play the main game together.
