5 Star Review  GameZone - Aug 21, 2007

The first-person shooter genre is easily one of the most popular styles of video games, and to look back over the past several years, some of the biggest titles of all time and "game of the year" awards have been for games of the FPS genre. Half Life, HALO, Half Life 2, F.E.A.R., Deus Ex, HALO 2, all have been critically lauded and made tons and tons of money. Not only because they are fun as all get out to play, but each one of these games has managed to raise the bar in one way or another for the genre. Half Life for its movie-like approach to gaming, Deus Ex for the added RPG elements, HALO for its heavy sci-fi storyline and engrossing character.

2k’s new FPS Bioshock has been hyped up the wazoo from both fans, magazines, news, and Jack Thompson alike. (Come on, you know that if Thompson is complaining about something it has to be good.) Many are even saying it’s the best thing since the sliced breads known as Counter-Strike and Halo.

BioShock | Xbox 360
4 Star Review  productwiki.com - Mar 19, 2010

BioShock is a first-person shooter that is the spiritual successor to the cult classic game System Shock. BioShock takes a more thoughtful approach to the genre as opposed to traditional run and gun gameplay. The three standout features that the developers strive for are with the setting and storyline, the open natured gameplay, and the advanced artificial intelligence. The game takes place in an underwater city named Rapture. Surviving a plane crash at the beginning of the game you find your way to this lost city, a decrepit and crumbling shadow of its former self. The ocean is reclaiming the space, and the inhabitants have turned into bloodthirsty mutants. During the course of the game you uncover how Rapture fell from its grace of a 1940s Utopian dream to the current nightmare. Minimal use of cutscenes are used as information is spread around the environment itself in newspapers, posters, and radio ... PROS: (1) Fantastic audio design (2) Compelling plot and setting (3) Quality voice acting (4) Seemless integration of story and gameplay (5) Satisfying combat ... CONS: (1) Death/revive system can the make game too easy (2) No multiplayer mode (3) often hard to hear transmissions and diaries over environmental noise (on default settings) (4) hacking is more like plumbing - albeit still fun (5) Not much replay value after story ends

Don't Play This
1 Star Review   By member AGamer123 - Jun 15, 2008

Strengths: Sucks you into a story that's engrossingly bizarre--also a huge weakness of the game (read on)

Weakness: Immoral "decisionmaking"

Life's hard enough without purposely "entering" a pretend world that, according to the game designers themselves is, "terrible." I regret playing this game and wish I hadn't exposed myself to these images of mutated and mutilated little girls. This game is, in one word, horrific.

Raising the bar
5 Star Review   By member Smiles_a_lot - Apr 17, 2008

Strengths: From a single player engrossment point of view it has it all....

Weakness: No online or multiplay option

Sublime..... The further you delve the deeper you will want to go. Dark and twisted story line throughout, with a lot of sickness mixed in. Weapons, vending machines, power ups are extraordinary. The look of the game, the immersion into the storyline, the continual twists and turns. This is my all time favourite game, pushs Halo 3, Oblivion, Assassin's Creed all to one side. I pray for one thing more, a sequel....... or two.... Don't miss out on playing this game!

Bioshock
5 Star Review   By member mojave - Feb 1, 2008

Strengths: A first-person shooter with a brain (good, deep story)

Weakness: Eh, it's still an FPS

First off I'll say I'm not an FPS (first-person shooter) fan. However, Bioshock was different enough for me to give it a shot. It has great graphics, and, even better, great art design. The Art Deco environment of underwater city of Rapture is absolutely stunning both graphically and from a design standpoint. The combat is fairly varied, with different projectile weapons and a force-like magical attack than can be enhanced with items found during the game. You can also hack security systems to attack enemies or to open doors and safes. The hacking minigame is enjoyable and a nice change of pace from the FPS action. Bioshock is widely recognized as one of the very best games available on the Xbox 360. If you are an FPS or action game fan in general it is a no-brainer purchase. But even people who aren't fans of those genres should give it a chance.

Game of the Year!!
5 Star Review   By member Brainwave0 - Dec 28, 2007

Strengths: Music; Story; Voice Acting

Weakness: Lack of multiplayer

Best First Person Shooter I've ever played! I've played my share of FPS', but this one takes the cake. The game mechanics are spot on. The graphics are top notch. The music and art direction set an eerie tone. I would recommend this game to anyone that enjoys first person shooters. Sure, there's no multiplayer. However, this is the kind of game that people don't mind watching and waiting for a chance to experience all that Rapture has to offer. If you enjoy FPS' at all, you simply must play this game!! All it takes is a few moments to fully involve you in the twisting, turning, crazy story with it's colorful characters and excellent voice acting. If you haven't, try it now!

360 Game of the Year
5 Star Review   By member amyinmi2000 - Dec 23, 2007

Strengths: breathtaking environments and graphics, creepy/scary, incredible AI, engaging story, upgrade weapons, 20+ hours of play,

Weakness: no online support, questionable content, no multiplayer,

Bioshock is an incredible first person shooter. Stranded in a breathtaking underwater city, Rapture, your goal is to find a way home. That won’t be easy because Rapture is populated with plenty of baddies from Splicers to the Big Daddies. Make no mistake these enemies are tough. A run and gun approach will not work in this game. To be successful in Bioshock you’ll have to use the environment to your advantage. Luckily the way death works in Bioshock, the game gives you the freedom to experiment with your weapons as much as you desire. In Bioshock you’ll be equipped with your standard upgradeable weapons plus upgradeable special powers. Everything in Bioshock has been beautifully crafted, from the graphics to the controls. Despite lack of online and multiplayer capabilities, this is still a must own game for all 360 owners. Bioshock is easily one of the best games of 2007.

Bioshock: A Shocking Inovative Gaming Experience
5 Star Review   By member silentassassin47 - Dec 17, 2007

Strengths: Gameplay, Story, Graphics, Controls, Atmosphere

Weakness: No Multiplayer

Wow!!! Bioshock is one of the most innovative and unique games I have played in years. It is totally up there with Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Mario 64. This is the must-play game of the year on the 360 (sorry Halo 3 fans). This is no First-Person shooter---this is a First-Person Adventure. You explore the spooky world of Rapture, a undersea dystopia. As you explore the Rapture, you will slowly gain too weapons and new powers, similar too Zelda: Twilight Princess. You can use shock the water to electrocute your enemies. You can also freeze them and melee them into pieces. Bioshock is not your traditional shooter like Doom or Wolfenstein---where you run and gun anything that moves. You must use your ammo wisely while ducking for cover. If try to go Rambo on the enemies, you will be kill in seconds. Sprinkle throughout the game will be pipe-like puzzles---which can get difficult later on in the story. Bioshock will take you around 20 hours to complete. However, there are two endings-so you will to play through it twice---making the game a possible 40 hour affair. Overall, Bioshock is the Game of the Year on the 360. If it weren't for Mario Galaxy--maybe the Game of the Year on all console.

4 Star Review   By member tpino84 - Nov 28, 2007

Strengths: The graphics, the gameplay, the storyline.

Weakness: Some kind of DLC would of been appreciated..as well as SOME kind of online. But that's just being picky.

Usually FPS games are a dime a dozen. Not BioShock. It's a great game. Yes, everyone is right. It's a great and fun game. The storyline is awesome, the controls are great..and, oh yeah it's fun. It can be a little too dark, but it's really nothing spooky. Just creepy? Yeah. If you haven't picked this up, well..what are you waiting for? Have Gamefly? At least put it in your Q! It's worth that at the very least!

Bioshock (XBOX 360)
5 Star Review   By member cotebryan - Nov 19, 2007

Strengths: (1) Awesome visuals (2) Great story (3) Good FPS gameplay infused with compelling RPG elements

Weakness: (1) None

Bioshock is truly one of the best games I have played. A unique and intriguing, interactive sci-fi narrative at its core, Bioshock is wrapped in addictive gameplay as you upgrade your character with new plasmid abilities, hack various machines and manipulate enemy characters to your advantage. From the very start, you are thrown into a believable and chilling world and become curious about how it came to be and what events led up to its current derelict state. The subject matter is treated very seriously and you feel as if the world is presented as it really existed. Bioshock is a must buy for anyone who remotely enjoys FPS and the Adventure/Horror genre.

Game of the Year
5 Star Review   By member psincubus - Nov 5, 2007

Strengths: Story, atmosphere, gameplay

This is one of the best games I have ever played. I am generally not a fan of first person shooters, but there are some games that just shouldn't be passed on. Bioshock is one of them. The story and atmosphere are really the main features of this game. Without spoiling anything, you must try this game.

Strengths: Thrilling gameplay, great sound, excellent atmosphere

Weakness: Kinda short

Bioshock has one of the best atmospheres in any game I have ever played. You get an incredible feel for the world of Rapture, an underwater city, gone wrong. The story is very thrilling, told through tape recorders you find. The gameplay isn't to hard but is very fun, combining spells and melee. Bioshock is one of the best games I have ever played, and I am definitely looking forward to playing it again.

GOTY - FTW
5 Star Review   By member prayformojo2 - Oct 9, 2007

Strengths: Immersive environments Many ways to play the game – no two games will be the same Great story

Weakness: Somewhat repetitive in later stages

The buzz for Bioshock hit a fevered pitch after this year’s E3. With every preview, screen cap, or video clip I became more and more excited. So I was quick to get a copy on launch day and I have been incredibly pleased with the game. It is rare that a game lives up to the hype placed on it, but Bioshock delivers. From your early descent into Rapture to the final moments the game is dripping with style. The game challenges the player to think as they play as there are often numerous ways to proceed in the game and very unique combinations of plasmid use (plasmids are genetic upgrades to your character, i.e. the ability to shoot electricity from your hands The Emperor style) and the environment. A lot of the early talk and press around Bioshock centered around the Big Daddies, which roam the levels and create very challenging and memorable battles. However, the game’s true brilliance lies in the decisions that you have to make along the way. Overall, Bioshock has an excellent story and game play to match. The game begs to be replayed, but I wish that some form of multiplayer had been included to extend the life of the game ($60 is a lot to pay for a game). I highly recommend the game and it has set the bar for Game of the Year pretty high.

One of the Best
5 Star Review   By member thebob101 - Sep 21, 2007

Strengths: Graphics, game play, environments

Bioshock by 2K games has to be one of the best games to be released on the Microsoft Xbox 360. The story is fantastic, the graphics are some of the best I have seen and the in game environments add to gameplay. The plasmids is a great addition to gameplay and adds to the strategy of the game. I think every single gaming magazine gave this game a 10. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who owns a 360!

BioShock Rocks... Believe the hype.
5 Star Review   By member Juggernaut1979 - Sep 19, 2007

Strengths: Awesome FPS shooter with gameplay depth.

Weakness: The dark atmosphere makes it more difficult.

I tried my best to wait for Halo 3, but alas, I was in need of a quality FPS. I've heard the hype for a month, and decided to give BioShock a try. The gameplay is incredibly fun, as it is not a mindless shooter. You can upgrade your character's skills through "plasmids", and battle your enemies using the environment. The graphics are really good, the soundtrack is excellent, and the control scheme should seem familiar if you've ever played a FPS on the 360.

5 Star Review   By member ready2run2 - Sep 15, 2007

Strengths: Excellent story, great graphics

BioShock is such an amazing game. The graphics in this game are amazing for an Xbox 360 game, and it controls very well. The story is pretty good, a decent12-20 hour game depending on how fast you pace yourself through the game. Overall, this game should be in any Xbox 360 owner's collection.

In one word: wow!!
5 Star Review   By member fates - Sep 11, 2007

Strengths: Graphics, sound, atmosphere.

Weakness: No online play.

They are very few games that take my breath away. Add to the fact that I normally do not like first person shooters with the exception of Halo, and this game really takes the cake. What really takes BioShock over the edge of first person shooters is the atmosphere. First person shooters usually contain the same basic controls; going through level after level, etc....what sets the special ones apart is the fun value and the intangibles. Well atmosphere is the intangible. Creepy lighting, left behind tape diaries, ocean graphics, blood everywhere, BioShock is the real deal. The only downside that some people may have a problem with (I do not) is the lack of online play. But this turns into a positive as the story line seems to go on forever! And along with that, BioShock is one of those special games that you will play through so you can get the whole story. As far as your character goes, the controls are very intuitive, with the left bumpers controlling your "adaptations" and your right bumpers controlling your weapons, including a wrench, machine gun, and oh yeah chemical burners. You can upgrade these weapons and adaptations (such as faster reload, larger capacity) which further engrosses you in the surrounding story. Enemies seem to be on the creep scale of Resident Evil. They follow no patter when attacking, and indeed at several points I have been simply overwhelmed. The surround sound is incredible, the water graphics superb. This game takes the time to envelop you. Wow what a game.

Epic and fresh experience
4 Star Review   By member jboone722 - Sep 8, 2007

Strengths: Fantastic story, immersing atmosphere, great graphics, great audio

Weakness: Lack of difficulty, abrupt ending

First few hours in I was annoyed by the fact that I couldn't die. When you die in the game, your health and EVE (The stuff that powers up your plasmids, or abilities. Stay with me here...) mostly regenerates and enemies keep the damage you did to them before you died. This makes the game pretty easy no matter what difficulty you're on. In fact, if you're standing near a Vita-chamber about to die or out of EVE, sometimes it's better to go suicidal. Originally I was torn between the phenomenal storyline and atmosphere and the lack of skill involved. Around my 3rd or 4th Big Daddy encounter, it kind of clicked. The experience is so amazing that it made up for the fact that I was being unchallenged. The Big Daddys aren't the titanic gaming bosses I thought they were going to be, they're just an example of amazing art direction and an exercise in managing resources. The appeal doesn't come from fear of their power, like everyone thought it was. The appeal of the BDs is the fact that they can be utilized and exploited in so many different ways based on the scenario. I was a kid in a haunted mansion. No real danger, but I'm still having fun like crazy. Without spoiling anything, the ending may leave you underwhelmed. The great experience makes up for it in the end for me though.

Bioshock...Best Game In Five Years!!!
5 Star Review   By member markc72 - Aug 28, 2007

Strengths: -Great Graphics. -Great Atmosphere. -Quality Story. -Great FPS/Some RPG Elements.

Weakness: -No Multi-player.

When I first tried the demo, I was in total awe. The opening seen of you crashing in the ocean with flames all around you was graphically amazing!! I kept playing the demo over and over until the game came out the following week. This game is up there with the best games of all time like Halo, Half-Life, and The Legend of Zelda. The atmosphere of Rapture is just hands down the greatest accomplishment of this game. The broken down looks of a city gone wrong is just amazing. The splicers that roam the city have their own special characteristics like thugs, houdini, and spiders. They have various attacks to take you out. And then there is the tough "Big Daddy's", the protectors of the "Little Sisters" roaming through the halls of Rapture. Little girls that have been taken over by a parasite are now blood thirsty and are feeding on the dead. The big daddy's are the protector of the little sisters and when you come near them, the big daddy comes after you. You need the little sisters for Adam to increase your skills. So you will have to confront the big daddy's to get that. The graphics are really good and are probably almost the best on the 360. Tasks are given to you throughout the game to accomplish in a semi-linear fashion. There is so much to explore and to find lying around. You can hack cameras, turrets and vending machines to help your cause to get through sticky situations or to upgrade at a cheaper price. I highly recommend this game. This game will last you at least 20 hours by taking your time and finding all the goodies laying around. I would give it more stars if I could because this game is that good.

This is why I like games better than movies now
5 Star Review   By member mchenoweth16 - Aug 27, 2007

Strengths: Awesome graphics and sound and the story is even better.

The nostalgia of finding yourself in an underwater city with mid twentieth century technology and art is really captivating. This game is definitely not for young gamers, but for the older audience it is one of the best. There are many allusions to political ideas and other forms of art and literature. The voice acting is better than many movies as is the story. Not only is the action diverse, but the haunting sites and situations make your pulse jump more than most suspense films. With games reaching this level, it is no surprise that the gaming industry continues to grow while the film industry shrinks.

Great Shooter With Amazing Graphical Style
5 Star Review   By member pop311 - Aug 25, 2007

Strengths: Graphics, Originality, Ambiance, Voice Acting

Weakness: No "Block" Command

This game is the best game to come out on any console this year so far. BIOSHOCK is an amazing thrill ride from start to finish. Right at the start, the game grabs you and puts you into its own world and doesn't release you until you turn off your Xbox360. The water in this game looks better than in any other game; ever. The audio aspect of this game is perfect. The crepy voices of the citizens of Rapture, the city where BIOSHOCK takes place, will put a chill down your spine. This game will spook you, scare you, and straight out frighten you. This is one of the best games you will play this year, period.

Great New 360 Game
5 Star Review   By member alisplasma - Aug 24, 2007

Strengths: Graphics Story line

Weakness: a little bit dark, literally, I had problems adjusting the gamma correctly

I really like this game even though I just got it. It looks like there are 50 achievements that should take me some time to get through. Hopefully the entire game play will be as good as the beginning. After finishing the game it was amazing. The story line was one of the best I've ever played. I was shocked and astounded by the twists in the story.

Undersea Mad House
5 Star Review   By member JDreborn - Aug 24, 2007

Strengths: Graphics, Story, Gameplay, Sound

Weakness: Not much Replayabilty after Two times

Bioshock is a first-person action/adventure game for the XBOX 360. The player plays as some guy who's plane crashes in the sea, finds a lighthouse, and then ends up entering an underwater city called Rapture which is torn apart by a civil war. The controls are similar to most first-person shooters on consoles. The player can use a normal weapon ranging from a wrench to grenade launcher or plasmids. Plasmids are genetic super powers which can give you powers like being able to zap enemies with lightening or turning an enemy into an ally. The graphics are amazing, with every little bit of detail adding to the atmosphere. This game is ace in the atmosphere department. The posters, signs, decor, outside windows showing the ocean world, all adds to the feeling that the player is in an underwater city some time in the 1960's. The story-line is decent and there are even two endings to play-through. The sound gives it a sixties feel. Only real gripe is that after the second play-through there isn't much replay value. Its a great game and every 360 owner should own it. I give the game 5 stars. Its about time the good games started rolling in this year 2007.
