Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
4 Star Review  GameZone - Nov 29, 2007

Ever since the T-virus was first unleashed, Capcom has been trying to find ways to expand the Resident Evil series. Direct sequels have gotten very complex and can no longer be made in the usual 18 to 24-month timeframe. Hence the Resident Evil remake, the Wii version of RE4, the attempt at online play, and a bunch of PSone offshoots. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is another offshoot. It’s a lightgun shooter that jumps back to the time when bloodthirsty zombies first took over that fateful mansion. It revisits the vicious encounter with a scorpion that nearly killed Rebecca Chambers.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
2.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - Mar 16, 2009

Set in the universe of Resident Evil, Umbrella Chronicles follows the heroes and heroines of Resident Evil 0, 1, and 3 as they battle the sinister creations of the Umbrella corporation. Played entirely in first person, Umbrella Chronicles is a shooter that is entirely on rails (think House of the Dead). Occasionaly you have the choice of veering off the beaten path, breaking down doors and finding alternate routes will ultimately be beneficial. Many of the objects in the game are breakable, concealing files, health, or ammunition. The files are the major draw of the game, giving fans of the series more back story and facts about their favorite games. All of the guns in the game are upgradable...for a cost. You must sacrifice a number of your stars (recieved after completing a mission) to upgrade the weapon. Some upgrades increase ammo capacity, while others increase damage, blast radius, or reload speed. ... PROS: (1) Tons of content (2) 2-player co-op (3) Compatible with the Wii Zapper ... CONS: (1) Resident Evil 2 and 4 are missing (2) Critical shots are hard to pull off (3) Selecting weapons is annoying (4) Not very scary

A worthy Resident Evil light gun game
4 Star Review   By member bauerpower - Apr 20, 2008

Strengths: goes through RE series, good graphics, decent and lengthy for a lightgun game

Weakness: can be slow for a lightgun game compared to HOTD. levels can drag on. no calibration

RE UC is a decent off-title to the RE series. It covers the entire series and revisits areas from the older games but in a lightgun perspective. This is a fun game if you have another person to play with. Lots of weapons, upgrades, and levels to go through for a lightgun game. It's pretty slow however as a lightgun game, and there's no calibration to let you aim "through the sights" of your Wiimote or Wii Zapper. Still, this is a good game if you want to shoot some zombies. If you want faster paced, go for HOTD 2+3.

RE: UC
5 Star Review   By member psincubus - Feb 24, 2008

Strengths: fun, good history, lots to do

Weakness: on rails, repetitive, not scary

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is a solid light gun type game. It is a good recap of Resident evil history and is fun to play. Gets a little repetetive but there is a lot to do. Overall, 4 out of 5 stars.

A Must for Those Who Like Shooter Games
4 Star Review   By member bballcards - Feb 1, 2008

Strengths: If you like shooter arcade-like games, this one's a must. Arcade-like play and interactivity at its best.

Weakness: Requires a TV with good contrast. Some of the button assignments take some getting used to.

Individuals who enjoy popping quarters into the arcade game first-person shooters will enjoy this game. The arcade-like play simulates what you find in physical arcades. The biggest problem is that you need a TV with an excellent contrast ratio, or you will be missing a lot of the detail and background in the game. This is especially becoming a problem with the advent of LCDs as popular TV choices. If you have a lousy LCD TV, you won't be able to see what you're shooting.

Not typical FPS
4 Star Review   By member Jimmy K. - Jan 19, 2008

Strengths: Graphics: Finally something written for Wii rather than ported from older generation consoles.

Weakness: Rail Shooter, not typical FPS.

It all depends on your taste. I personally prefer traditional FSP, where I have control where to go and the speed I go thru the game. Umbrella Chronicles is a rail shooter. The game control your movement and the speed you move thru the game. All you do is aim and shoot. Shooting is one aspect of games. Another important aspect is exploration which is missing in this type of game. I still give this product 4 star (very good rating). The game is fun and fast moving. Enjoyable to play. One complaint is the interface for ammo. Instead of telling you how much ammo you have left, you get green color for a lot and red for low. I still haven't figured out out what is a lot vs low. Provide ammo as a number.

Not the best Resident Evil...But Certainly Not the Worst
4 Star Review   By member hoalong - Jan 13, 2008

Strengths: New creative use of the wii remote and nunchuck, fun co-op play, Fills in various gap in story mode

Weakness: Very short game play, especially co-op mode; some frustration with the control and sensor; Picky Save Feature

This is a solid line into the Resident Evil chapter. While nowhere close to its highly rated brother, Resident Evil 4, this Resident Evil made a solid name in the rail shooter category for the Wii. Overall game play is pretty solid, despite being very short. Control and sensor motion can be jiggly at time, but you'll get used to it. Some boss scenes are frustrating, especially with the lack of weapon choices in surrounding environment. It is a good buy, just nothing great or memorable that would leave you yearning for more.

Intense and Exciting!
5 Star Review   By member ghadeed - Jan 9, 2008

Strengths: Very great game which uses the wiimote and the wiizapper beautifully!

Weakness: too short!

This is a great game, especially if you have a partner to play with. The game is a great shooter and the wiizapper is a must if you want the full experience. Lots of plot twists and scary moments, well worth the price and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys shooter games!

Great Game for the Average Fan
4 Star Review   By member atrandoinbox - Jan 9, 2008

Strengths: Half RE and half shooting game play, zapper or gun interactive, decent storyline and difficult(for me, anyways).

Weakness: Pretty straight forward, no control on character direction and 2 players mode makes target jittery.

I bought this game the same time I bought the Wii and Zapper for my Christmas present. Can't comment on the remote and nunchuk game play since I've only used the Zapper. Haven't played RE in a while so this brought back some fond memories. Most dedicated RE fans will be disappointed with this game, since the game play is in 1st person view, character not controllable, and not thought provoking. But I believe Capcom made this game the way it is on purpose. Have something of RE and gun play, like Time Crisis or Ghost Squad. Since I'm the average fan, this game satisfied 2 of my needs, the storyline of RE and the "shoot-them-up" play. Game is difficult since I haven't pass this certain level yet. Would be nice if Capcom had putted more checkpoints so I wouldn't need to replay unnecessary areas. Don't think its repetitive or its just me since I like these kinds of game. My only complaint is the 2-players mode, the targetting isn't as smooth as 1 player. The targetting flickers at times and jitters consistently. So frustrated that I haven't played 2-players since. Just bought a wireless sensor and will see if it fix this problem. Beside this problem, I am quite happy with this RE edition and the zapper really makes it more interactive.

Decent RE Game with a New Way of Playing
3 Star Review   By member danshinn - Jan 4, 2008

Strengths: action packed, compliments the wii zapper, good story line

Weakness: graphics could be better, repetitive, slow at times

if you buy this game, the wii zapper is almost an absolute must. the gameplay is decent and there's plenty of action, but it's not as good as RE4. that game set the bar pretty high for all future games in the RE series. i like how this game adds to the RE storyline and fills in the gaps of all previous games. fans will love this game. newbies, might not be that into since nothing will be familiar to them. if this game is on sale (anything under 49.99 retail), it's worth a purchase. otherwise, i'd recommend you just rent and try it out.

Great Game!
3 Star Review   By member wildstar7 - Jan 4, 2008

Strengths: Easy to control. Actually you don't have to worry about any puzzle on this game

Weakness: Just point and shoot. That's it. No hard thinking or anything...

Couple of hours fun. After that, just same stuff over and over again. If you are resident evil's fan, this game might give you more detail about whole story line. I recommend this game to someone who want to enjoy the shooting.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (Wii)
4 Star Review   By member clickme236 - Jan 3, 2008

Strengths: Works well with the Nintendo Zapper. Great graphics. Feels like you're playing at an arcade machine

Weakness: Can't move freely. You can't save whenever you want to.

The game is different from RE4 in that it feels like you're playing on a rail, like in an arcade game. You have little control of where you go. It's fun to play with the Zapper for that arcade feel. The other character that is with you, so far for me, only talks but doesn't help you shoot anything. It has great gloomy graphics.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (Wii)
4 Star Review   By member RobDC - Jan 2, 2008

Strengths: Decent rail shooter

Weakness: Somewhat tedious after awhile

This game has all of the advantages/disadvantages one would expect from a rail shooter. While it's easy to jump right in and just start shooting, you lose the ability to explore the in-game world. For those of us who get queasy from the jerky movement in most free-wheeling FPS games, this is a welcome respite. Others might not agree, in which case something like RE4 would work better.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
4 Star Review   By member littlepoohs - Jan 2, 2008

Strengths: Fun, Nostalgic for RE fans

Weakness: Repetitive

I bought this as a Christmas present for my brother-in-law. He loves the Resident Evil series and mentioned that playing Umbrella Chronicles makes him feel nostalgic. I'm not really into video games, but I did have a chance to play this in co-op mode with him and found it quite fun. It reminded me of some arcade games, especially with the incorporation of the Wii Zapper. My only complaint is that the game did eventually get quite repetitive.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (Wii)
4 Star Review   By member chicodeazn - Dec 31, 2007

Strengths: Great graphics, great use of the motion sensor.

Weakness: The nature of the game feels restrictive.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is a rail shooter for the Nintendo Wii. This game will please Resident Evil fans. Although this is not the typical Resident Evil game, this game will attract Resident Evil followers. Besides attracting fans of the series, this game is very easy to pick up with its intuitive controls. Umbrella Chronicles goes through the story of previous Resident Evil games. This game highlights the events that took place earlier. This game puts you in the mood of the situation. The lighting effects play a big role in this category. Although this is a change from older Resident Evil games, this game is sure to please fans of the series and fans of this genre.

Decent rail shoooter...
3 Star Review   By member j4y_7 - Dec 29, 2007

Strengths: 480p Widescreen

Weakness: One-dimensional, gets boring quick, Price

Although I've seen all of the movies, I've never played any of the games in the original RE series, which may have kept me from enjoying this game as much... since I was unable to experience the "nostalgic" factor. I personally feel that there are very few Wii games that are worth $50, but I recently purchased the Wii Zapper and Amazon had the game on sale for $35. This arcade-style rail shooter is definitely fun, but in spurts. The game-play is one dimensional and it gets boring quick, so I'm unable to play it for more than 30 minutes at a time. Definitely rent this one first before buying, or at the very least find a good deal or get it used.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
4 Star Review   By member kcliou - Nov 30, 2007

Strengths: good sound effect, good review of some of the best parts of the Resident Evil series

Weakness: less movement control, doesn't include RE2, too expensive, the graphics could be better

I'm a big fan of resident evil and I love first person shooters so I had very high expectation of this game. However I don't really like the rail system. It makes the game easier but you lost the control of the character. All you have to do is aim and shoot. It is still fun to play this game but I think the graphics could be better. It is a must buy for resident evil fans but I suggest wait until the price is below $40.

Great alone, great with a friend.. even better with a Zapper!
4 Star Review   By member tpino84 - Nov 28, 2007

Strengths: GREAT co-op game!

Weakness: Not enough blood/gore for a Resident Evil game. You'd expect a bit more, ya know?

I got this a few days before I got myself a Wii Zapper. Me and my friend played it with JUST Wii Remote & Nunchuk. It was good. It was fun. We enjoyed it very much! THEN we got some Wii Zappers. Ooh, it feels so much better. Just make sure you set your control options to "Wii Zapper" as in it will change your controls around to make it easier to play (and feel SO good!) It's just an on-rails zombie shooting game. Not much more. But it's so fun! A lot of things to collect, you have to work hard for those "S" rankings in missions. Lots of replay value..and it's just so much fun with a friend. Please, pick this up and get yourself a Wii Zapper. If you have a friend, have them buy a Zapper too.
