Turn your dollars into points easily.
5 Star Review   By member CrashSpyro123 - May 25, 2007

Strengths: Works just as advertised. Good alternative for those that don't like using credit cards.

Weakness: Stores tend to overcharge for these points. Flimsy plastic card.

The Wii's virtual console arrived and instead of taking real money, Nintendo wants you to buy these points to use in their Wii Shop to buy classic games to play on your Wii. It's a pretty simple package and concept: scrape off the silver area on the back and enter the code to add Wii points to your Wii account. Unfortunately, the card itself is just flimsy plastic that isn't like any normal plastic credit card you may have, but that doesn't affect much at all. Regardless, it's quick and easy, which is the whole point of the points card. Just make sure you're paying at most $20 for the card, not including tax, as some stores have had the gull to charge more than the MSRP.

Wii points
4 Star Review   By member tslee - May 24, 2007

Strengths: Good for gifts

Buying game gifts can be pretty difficult. It turns out kids are pretty particular about which brand controllers, which games, etc. Actually, everybody is particular about everything which is probably why gift cards are so popular now. The Wii points card is good for that, and allows purchase of download games. For example, the classic N64 Mario Kart game can be purchased online using the Wii and the Wii Points Card. It really plays identically to the N64 version. So basically it is a gift card worth $20. Never any sales for it though.

Wii Points card
5 Star Review   By member mj_f - May 24, 2007

Strengths: Convenient and possibly cheaper way to get Nintendo Virtual Console games on your Wii system

Weakness: Typing in codes can be a pain

In order to purchase downloadable content on the Nintendo Wii system (which as of now only consists of Virtual Console games - games for older Nintendo and Sega systems, mostly, like Star Fox 64, Super Mario World, etc) you need to use "points". The points can then be exchanged for NES games (typically 500 points), Super Nintendo games (800 points), Nintendo 64 games (1000 points), and a few other systems (with various pricing). In the future Nintendo is expected to add original content much like the Xbox Live Arcade offerings, and possibly downloadable content for regular Wii games. The points can be ontained in one of two ways. The first is to enter your credit card information on the Wii Shop channel on your Wii and purchase points directly: $10 for increments of 1000 points. The other way is to buy Wii Points cards which have 2000 points (and typically retail for $20). You then enter a code from the card into the appropriate interface in the Wii Shop channel and you are credited with the 2000 points. While some may find the credit card option more convenient (no need to go to a store and buy one of the cards for example), there are some potential advantages to using the cards. The best reason is that the cards can be purchased at a discount (with coupons, gift certificates, trade-in credit at game stores, etc). Also, obviously, if you lack a credit card this is the only way to get the VC games. Personally, I use the Wii Points cards for this very reason - they can be obtained for $15 or sometimes less using coupons and in-store promotions, making the VC games much more affordable than simply paying $20 for 2000 points.

Does what its suppose to
3 Star Review   By member neuromix - Apr 29, 2007

Strengths: helps keep my credit card number from another company's hand, doesnt expire

Weakness: no cash value, will not be replaced if lost

Well the Wii points card lets me buy software for the Nintendo Wii Virtual console without giving them my actual credit card number, which is a plus. Also you can sometimes find these on sale which is great so your not actually paying the real face value of the card. Wish they made cards available in a value other than 2000 points. Be careful, there are no security or scratch pins on the cards, so someone may have already redeemed your card or if you lost it, it will not be replaced.

Wii got points.
3 Star Review   By member The_Admiral - Apr 24, 2007

Strengths: Can usually find in stores for $15 with BB Coupons.

Weakness: None. It's a card.

The Wii Points card allows you to purchase classic games from the Wii Virtual Console. Older games cost 1000 points, Older old games cost 800 points, and the oldest of the older old games cost 500 points. So the most expensive games cost around ten dollar. Many of these games you probably never played or never want to play again. But there are some gems already on the system. Castlevania, Zelda, Mario. The consoles range from the NES, Super NES, N64, Genesis, and Turbographics 16. If only they had some older gameboy games on there... Metroid II was a classic.

Points Card Alows classis downloads
4 Star Review   By member chazhick - Apr 13, 2007

Strengths: Allows classic downloads.

Weakness: Not a huge amount of virtual console games yet.

The card is itself is easy to use. This allows you to access virtual console games on the marketplace. Currently there is not a huge selection of games, but they release new ones every week. I understand that in the future there will be more items available to download and it wont be limited to just games.

Points for online purchases
3 Star Review   By member njkrautk - Mar 24, 2007

Strengths: Does not require purchase of points online with credit card

Weakness: Limited availablilty in stores currently

The Wii Points Card is used in conjunction with the Ninendo Wii and its online store. You can purchase retro games using points from these cards (available at retail stores) or with points purchased online with your credit card. Games range between $5-$10. I think they priced their N64 games too high at $10, but that won't stop me picking a few up so maybe they were right. If you can find the cards on a discount you might as well pick them up.

Nintendo Wii Points Card
4 Star Review   By member j4y_7 - Mar 21, 2007

Strengths: Possibility of saving a little money

Weakness: Can be hard to find, Not as convenient as buying directly from the Wii Shop

Wii points allow you to purchase programs and games for the Virtual Console on Wii. While you can conveniently purchase the points directly through the Wii, there are some advantages of purchasing the physical card: 1.) In some states, you are charged tax when purchasing Wii Points directly through your Wii. By purchasing the card online on some websites, you can avoid sales tax. 2.) If you want to give Wii Points as a gift, it's more convenient to give a physical card. 3.) If you receive a gift card to a retail store and want to buy Wii Points, you can't use your gift card to by points directly through the Wii. But you CAN use it to be Wii Points at a retail store. 4.) Nintendo doesn't currently offer any discounts on Wii Points when purchased through your Wii. By purchasing the card online or at a retail store, you may be able to use the stores coupons.

Wii Points Card
5 Star Review   By member ineedbrew - Mar 3, 2007

Strengths: Convenient, Excellent gift idea for kids!

This is the way that you can buy older games for the Wii without giving your credit card number to your kids or sending it out over the Wii. Generally available at Brick and Mortar stores and on-line. I believe that there are different card values...but all I could find was the $20 (2000 Wii points). It would be nice if there were readily available $10 and $15 and $50 cards.

Wii Points Cards
4 Star Review   By member jayger - Mar 2, 2007

Strengths: Convenient. No tax. What more can I say? Nice curves on the card? Nice weighed plastic? ;)

Weakness: Card is worth $20, yet some retailers charge $24.99. Must be advanced math?

Got the card on-line for $19.92, no tax, free shipping. I actually have to pay tax if I purchased $20 worth of points on my wii. Go figure. Price Grabber was running a $5 bonus review rebate, so I essentially got 2000 points for only $14.92. Sweet! This card is great to purchases games on your wii to play Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16 games. Simply enter the card on your wii and you're good to go for making these purchases! Great concept, will buy again!

Wii Points Card (2000 Wii points)
4 Star Review   By member jiangzongliang - Feb 28, 2007

Strengths: Easy to redeem. Safe, no need for online transmission of your credit card information.

Weakness: Fixed amount (2000 points), option for lower points not available.

As a matter of fact, you are able to purchase Wii points directly on the Shopping Channel through your Wii console connected to the Internet. That way, you have the option of getting only 1000 points there if you don't need 2000 points. However, if you don't trust the security of online credit card transaction, feel free to pick up a Wii Points Card (a fixed 2000 points) from your local retail store. It should give you peace of mind.

Wii Points Card
3 Star Review   By member tcamca - Feb 27, 2007

Strengths: Easy to redeem.

Wii points can be used to download some games from the older NES, SNES, N64, Genesis and Turbografix game systems. The games are played via Wii Virtual Console. There is also a Wii Shop called WiiWare that currently offers a pre-release Opera Browser - who knows what will be offered in the future. The points sell for 10 cents per point via credit card, so 2000 points will run 20 dollars. The games generally go for $5, $6, $8 and $10 and play very true to the originals. Reasons to go with a Wii Points card would be to shop around and obtain the points card at a discount, or if you don't have a credit card or if you prefer not to use a credit card for on-line purchases.

Wii Points Card a Cool Idea!
4 Star Review   By member wrtoyworks - Feb 27, 2007

Strengths: As "good as cash" when buying via Wii online. No credit card needed. Great gift idea for kids!

Weakness: No discount--a $20 cards costs you $20!

Some may question why bother with Wii points cards, given they do not offer a discount or anything. You pay $20 for a $20 card, and the $20 card is worth no more than if you simply enter your credit card info when buying from Wii online. But therein lies the point--Many prefer not to share credit card info online, and this protects against that. And these cards make great gift ideas for kids to spend as they wish on Wii game downloads, merchandise, etc. They can do on their own and not bug you for your credit card. My son thoroughly enjoyed!

Wii Point
5 Star Review   By member lotofchewing - Feb 24, 2007

Strengths: Convenient.

Weakness: Can get it on Wii Shopping.

Wii Point is the currency for buying games, wares, and who-knows-what-else on the Wii Shopping channel. I bought the points for games. It is fast, easy, and convenient. Nintendo really did a good job at Wii shopping channel. You can buy points directly from Nintendo and use it right away on the Wii Shopping channel. Therefore, the only reason I can find to buy point card is either you do not have a credit card, or you can get it cheaper than 20 bucks for 2000 points. I managed to do the later.

Cool Idea!
5 Star Review   By member ljwhitmire - Feb 24, 2007

Strengths: Quick, easy, portable, and fairly cheap.

Weakness: None that I can think of.

Well this is pretty simple. These are the basic currency needed to purchase virtual console games on the Wii. It's cool that you can play old games which gives the cheapest game console on the market and even higher value. The only downside I can see is that all the purchases are tied to your console ID. If it dies, all your purchases die with it.

Wii Points Card Works Great
5 Star Review   By member SUPERTAN - Feb 23, 2007

Strengths: + Available in most stores + Easy to register on your Wii + Virtual Console Games are fairly reasonable

Weakness: - Buying more points at a discount would be cool

The Wii Points Card is easy to use and works without problem. Just register your points with your Wii in the WiiShop Channel and they can be used to purchase any Virtual Console game. I have my eye on Golden Axe, Streetfighter II, and Mario Kart 64. The 2000 points won't cover all three, so I might have to buy another one! The access to classic games is great, so you definitely need one of these if you have a Wii!
