Sid Meier's Pirates
4.5 Star Review  GameZone - Feb 5, 2007

Swabbing the deck, once again, you find yourself loathing the unmerciful boot of the vulgar captain of the ship. Unable to take anymore abuse, you lash out, giving the scurvy dog a swift kick in the backside as he walks the plank after your successful mutiny. Alas, you are now the captain of the ship and the path before you is open to do whatever you want. If you want to plunder and pillage then that’s your right as a pirate. If you want to spend your days trading between outpost while romancing beautiful woman then that’s your right as a noble captain. Either way you approach this game, Sid Meier’s Pirates! is a fun game and even more so now that it has come to the PSP.

Sid Meier's Pirates!
5 Star Review   By member keelie - Sep 5, 2008

Strengths: One of the best games for PSP

Weakness: Few

Sid Meier's Pirates is an amazing port for the PSP. It's probably one of the best games so far. Due to its aged origin, graphics is a mixed bag. However, this doesn't take away from the gameplay. It works so well on the PSP that you don't feel like playing an old game. You command your ship and your crew and free to do whatever you want in the game. There are just so many ways to play it. This game has so many things thrown in there that if you like strategy, mini games or are a pirate fan, you will like it!

Sid Meier's Pirates!
5 Star Review   By member eau697 - Jul 10, 2008

Strengths: Great port of the PC game, graphics, control

Weakness: Repetitive

Sid Meier's Pirates is an excellent port of the PC game for the portable PSP. In Pirates you play a pirate captain to seek fortune and fame on the high seas, and to avenge your family. There is a high degree of freedom in the game in which you are free to explore, trade, treasure hunt, etc to achieve your goals. I'm impressed with the graphics and sound of the game, considering its age and lineage from the PC version. Controls are fluid and load time is minimal. All in all, it is an excellent and affordable game to have.

Sid Meirer's Pirates!
4 Star Review   By member pjacgood - Jun 17, 2008

Strengths: amazing, and addicting storyline

Weakness: It is a bit repetitive.

At the beginning of the game you choose which country you will serve. You choose between the French, Spanish, England, and the Dutch. You level up the from each country till you become a Duke. The crew can fight & capture various types of ships, like Pirates, Merchants, and many more. On the game you will go find hidden cities and treasures. On a scale from one to ten I would give it a eight. I reccommend this fun, adventerous, and addicting game to all.

We sail the ocean blue
4 Star Review   By member henwy - Mar 18, 2008

Strengths: Plenty of things to do, nonlinear

Weakness: Graphics sort of spartan

The supposed goal of this game has you as a Pirate, fighting to avenge yourself against a Spanish nobleman, but the game is far more freeform than that. It's up to you to decide how you want to attain the fame and fortune that you will need whether that be through exploring, trading, treasure hunting, or full blown piracy. Right off the bat you get to pick yourself a pirate who excels in one of several areas (navigation, swashbuckling, dancing) and then to pick a nation to whom you pledge your initial allegiance. After that, it's all up to you what sort of quests or missions you want to persue to complete your ultimate goals.

fun, very similar to PC version !!!
5 Star Review   By member oo7bunny - Mar 3, 2008

Strengths: 1. Has the same great gameplay of the original PC game. 2. controls are easy to use and were perfect match of psp.

Weakness: 1. sometimes during the ship sword fighting sequence, the characters are off the screen. 2. the music are abrupt and missing at times

The same great game of the original and now can play on the road. The greatest fun of this game is that you can do whatever you want, you can follow the quests “Path to Revenge” by saving your family, track down the Marquis, or you can go on your own and keep attacking ships to get wealthy, or fight for specific country and become Duke, or take over cities or you can romance the governors daughters but no matter what you do, it will be entertaining and have lots of fun.

get it and rewind the time
5 Star Review   By member Simsim73 - Feb 5, 2008

Strengths: excellent graphics, great gameplay

Weakness: can be a bit repetitive after a while

I know the game since I was a little kid where I played it on a Commodore computer. Then I had a version for the PC but the PSP version is definitely the best of all! The graphics - just great! It does not get boring with all the missions you have to achieve and it is easy to follow the strand. The only annoying part of the game is that one has to go through the same commands over and over (talking to a mysterious stranger, talking to the governor, talking to the bartender and the barkeeper at the bar to get all the hints and information). I got the game on a Friday and had to play it during the following weekend. I only stopped for sleeping and eating - playing was so much fun! Especially, to start with a greenhorn and to transform him into an experienced, rich and married pirate. I can highly recommend this game!

Run, do not walk off the plank and buy this game!
5 Star Review   By member docmav - Nov 22, 2007

Strengths: Sid Meier game, Swashbuckling fun, awesome graphics

Weakness: No tutorial in the beginning

Sid Meier's PC game on the PSP is awesome! Pirates is more of a conquering, fighting and trading game. It is not like the Civ games. I was very impressed with the graphics and sounds on this game, load times were minimal also. You start off commanding your own ship and hire new crew when you visit different cities. Once on the seas you can battle other ships and take them over. Anyone who has any interest or likes pirates in general, this game is a must have. Pirates is hard to find in stores so pick this one up ASAP!

One of the best PSP strategy games out there. . .
5 Star Review   By member RebateHope01 - Oct 17, 2007

Strengths: Quality port of PC game, fluid controls, lots of mini-games, minimal load times, inexpensive to buy

Weakness: Completely unrealistic portrayal of pirate lifestyle, minimal audio

Sid Meier's Pirates started life as a PC game in 1987, and its 2004 PC remake garnered some critical and consumer acclaim. Pirates for PSP comes across as a mostly faithful port of the 2004 PC game, and the results are mostly positive. Pirates subscribes to the sandbox style of game play, meaning you can go anywhere and do anything you want. You can seek vengeance against the Spaniards that wronged you, hunt for treasure, trade with townspeople, etc. all at your own pace. Pirates works on the PSP because the mini-game action occurs so quickly and the controls work so well. Because so much is mini-game based, you can fight enemies on land and sea, sneak through enemy bases and charm the governor's daughter all within twenty to thirty minutes. If you're a strategy, mini-game or pirate fan, chances are you'll find something to like here, and now that the price has come down (below $20), purchasing Sid Meier's Pirates becomes a much easier decision.

Yargh! Open-ended Pirate Gameplay
4 Star Review   By member FurryCurry - Jun 8, 2007

Strengths: Sandbox feel with a variety of things to do and see.

Weakness: Can be overwhelming and the graphics are mixed bag.

This is such a terrific game on the PSP. You play the role of a pirate in the Caribbean who's family was kidnapped and put into slavery when you were a wee lad. And after you grow up and become a man you can do basically whatever the heck you want with your ship and your crew. Attack ships on the high seas and board them for one on one duels. Then take their loot, crew, and ship! Sneak around towns and get chased down by the army. Dance with the daughters of Governors. Become a complete jerk and betray the country you have aligned yourself with. You can also talk to to people in bars and get clues to hunting down the elusive pirate that's caused you so much grief or hunt down other famous pirates of the era like Black Beard. OH and you can't forget digging for treasure. It's a terrific adventure/rpg/micro-managing (just wait to you get more than one ship in your rag tag pirate fleet) game. There is always something to do while playing it and since you can save anywhere you can pick up and put down the game whenever you want. Just simply classic stuff here.

Arrr Matey! Avast ye be on the seas of the PSP.
4 Star Review   By member Admiral_Ackbar - Feb 15, 2007

Strengths: Great port of a great game. Looks good. Plays well.

Weakness: Some of the minigames are rough around the edges

Pirates is a port to the PSP of a great game to first appear on the PC and then xbox. In Pirates you start as a fresh faced captain and sek your fortune and fame on the high seas. Carouse in pirate bays, duel on the high seas, or impress a governors daughter (or two!) It's a great game with a lot of replayability and open endedness. Perfect for carying around on your PSP. Some of the mini games can at times eem a little simplistic and rough around the edges. But otherwise it's a fathful port full of fun and adventure.
