PaRappa The Rapper
3.5 Star Review  GameZone - Jul 23, 2007

When rhythm games were still trying to catch fire, PaRappa the Rapper lit the wick to start the flames. When the genre was fighting to gain respect, PaRappa gave it a starting point to gain mainstream notoriety. But when the year is 2007, and the genre has advanced to guitar and dance-pad themed titles, questions need to be asked if PaRappa is relevant anymore. Sony decided to release PaRappa the Rapper as a full-fledged title on the Playstation Portable. With new content that includes a multiplayer mode, downloadable remixes and smoothed out graphics, is the game worth a trip down memory lane? Let’s begin with the storyline.

PaRappa The Rapper
3 Star Review   By member mj_f - Nov 3, 2008

Strengths: A Playstation 1 classic brought to the PSP

Weakness: Nothing more than that old, somewhat dated, PS1 game

PaRappa The Rapper was a somewhat innovative game when it first came out for the original Playstation nearly 10 years ago. However, music and rhythm games have come a long way since then and this may not hold up in comparison to them. What does hold up, though, is the unique art style and funny cut scenes that play out between stages. The main game consists of timed button presses to keep the rap of your character going. The game can be very difficult, though. Consisting of just 6 levels you might think it would be very short. However, given that you may need to retry some of them for a long time to pass them, the game may take a while to finish. Unfortunately this makes for pretty frustrating gameplay. You would like there to be more content to take up the time not continuous failure and retries. However, for those who persevere (or are just better at this sort of thing) this game is worth checking out for the unique art style and as kind of a nostalgic look at one of the earliest music/rhythm games. Unfortunately the PSP versions is really nothing more than the original game packed onto a UMD for the PSP. It would have been nice for it to have included more songs.

PaRappa
3 Star Review   By member bob330i - Oct 22, 2008

Weakness: short, minimal replayability

I think this title is showing it’s age. It’s a fairly straight forward game, similar in idea to Simon where you match the notes that the teacher spits out. The music is pretty good but the game is short and replayability is fairly limited. It seems to be just an extended one note minigame and I got tired of it after a few runthroughs to get a higher rating. I certainly enjoyed the style and my first and second tries but it’s still too one dimensional to keep my interest. Rumor has it that there is a sequel in the works. Hopefully they’ll add more depth to it.

Solid PSP Game
2 Star Review   By member radaba1 - Aug 6, 2008

Strengths: Gameplay, graphics

Weakness: A little dated. Lack of new content.

Back when the original PaRappa came out, it was fun and innovated. Now, with popular rhythm games such as Guitar Hero and DDR, this game has lost its charm. Since you cannot play DDR or Guitar Hero on the PSP, this game may be fun if you like rhythm games. If not, then stay away.

PaRappa the Rapper: 10 years later. . .
4 Star Review   By member MadWolfie01 - Feb 6, 2008

Strengths: Great rhythm-based audio, endearing characters/story, solid graphics on PSP, new multiplayer mode

Weakness: Not optimized for widescreen, minimal updates/new content, short overall length, expensive for what you get

PaRappa the Rapper for PSP is pretty much a straight port of the ten-year-old PSone game. If you were hoping for a remake or a significant update/expansion to the rhythm game you loved as a child, you will be sorely disappointed here. Fortunately, PaRappa remains a decent game even by today's standards. The old PSone graphics look good when shrunk to the PSP screen, and the great audio and endearing characters are all still here. While the screen view has expanded to cover the widescreen format, PaRappa's prompt line not, meaning early notes in a phrase can still sneak up on you very quickly during game play. New content comes in the form of one lackluster multiplayer mode and downloadable remixes of the same six tunes you already have. Thus while the game itself remains good for a port of a ten-year-old game, the $30 retail price makes tracking down the original PSone game seem reasonable. PaRappa can also be difficult at times and is relatively short given its brief six stages, so only rhythm game fans should seek this it out. Even then, look for a sale or clearance given rather than pay full price. $20 or less would have been a reasonable asking price for this.

The Classic Returns! Ole Joy!
4 Star Review   By member Spoon_Si - Dec 19, 2007

Strengths: Same music & Gameplay as original! Great value Priced Game.

Weakness: PSP stereo too weak! headphone yes-please.

Picked this game up on the bargain bin, remembering the days when this came out and the buzz sorrunding it, a little funky dog, dat raps w/ broken english, pressed w/ the right button on your controller. Game is the same as played on your Playstation 1 system. And who doesn't love the catchy funny music from it. Nice buy! and a good game for those short gaming time.
