Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
4.5 Star Review  GameZone - Mar 19, 2008

Ever since the title was first hinted of years ago, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core has been the one title that PSP owners have been clamoring for. And rightly so, considering that the original Final Fantasy VII is still one of the most popular and beloved video games ever released. However, the moment is finally upon us, as Crisis Core is finally hitting store shelves. No doubt many gamers may be a little surprised at just how different the game is from the original, but once they get over their initial shock, they will discover a great action-RPG that does justice to its predecessor.

Strengths: Innovative DMW system, unbelievable FMV cutscenes, great storyline

Weakness: There really were none

Many of us gamers cut our teeth on Square's Final Fantasy VII when it came out on the Playstation. In fact, the existence of that game was the main reason I bought a playstation in the first place. Now, decades after the fact, Square has returned to its most successful franchise to fill in some of the story gaps in the original. Let me say right from the start that FF: Crisis Core is stunning. There are huge numbers of cut scenes worked into the story and it's almost as if you're watching a movie rather than playing a game at times. I think it's the best graphical game to come out on the PSP thus far. The basic storyline follows Zack, the Soldier whose identity Cloud later incorporates into his own in the FFVII game. Before meeting Cloud, Zack had a full life advancing as a Soldier and meeting many of the characters from the world including Aerith, Tifa, and Sephiroth. Many questions are answered including where the buster sword came from, why Sephiroth went nuts, and what really happened at Nibelheim. In my opinion, the game is worth buying just for the storyline alone. In addition to the story, the gameplay is excellent. In combat, you have free motion control of Zack as you can run around monsters, diving and blocking to avoid attacks. Your own attacks can be as simple as attacking with your sword or using one of a plethora of materia. There's also a DMW system (a sort of slot machine with 3 tumblers) which constantly spin and when the imagines match or certain number combinations come up you gain abilities or execute limit break attacks. The randomness of the DMW can be a bit frustrating when you're looking for one specific result, but in general it adds a bit of unexpected spice. There's absolutely no reason not to pick up this game, even if you're not a final fantasy fanatic. It's written well so that you don't need exterior knowledge about the storyline and the plot and combat will keep you engaged for hours.

FF:CC
5 Star Review   By member bob330i - Aug 15, 2008

Strengths: graphics, music, cut scenes

Weakness: long and deep, not much suited for short periods of play

One of the best looking games on the PSP. It’s amazing what they’ve done with this title’s graphics and content. I’ve only just started the game and it’s been great so far. It’s not quite as “tough” as previous FF titles (less random battles/level grinding) which is fine with me. I’ve been turned of in the past with FF titles constant random battles and grinding. As I’ve eluded to, it’s not quite the same formula as with past FF titles, but I think the differences make for better and smoother gameplay. So if you’re into the traditional FF format, you may want to rent it first. But if you’re open to some tweaks, you should pick up this title.

A true Final Fantasy game has finally arrived on the PSP
4 Star Review   By member 0wen - Aug 11, 2008

Strengths: Great graphics, cut scenes and traditional Final Fantasy Score.

Weakness: Mission Repetition, Action RPG gameplay instead of traditional FFVII turn based system.

Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core tells the back story of the characters that we have come to know and love from Final Fantasy VII. It is amazing what they were able to pull off graphically on the PSP in Crisis Core. Many might be disappointed with the Action RPG fighting style instead of Turn Based like original Final Fantasy VII but it does fit with the story and makes you feel like you have more of a hand in winning your battles. There are a lot of items to collect if you are into that style of playing or you can just play through the story just grabbing stuff as it comes along and still enjoy the game without all the treasure hunting. Any Final Fantasy fan should add this to their PSP library.

A trip down memory lane.
5 Star Review   By member Admiral_Ackbar - Aug 3, 2008

Strengths: Looks great. Good story. Good gameplay.

Weakness: A little quirky.

Crisis Core is a great game, but it has some quirks. The graphics look great and the story is a great throwback to the original Final Fantasy 7. The story is great, plenty of gameplay, good combat, and looks great. Overall, it's great, but I had a buddy who was turned off by some of the systems. There are some quirks to leveling and a few other things that some may not like. But I thought it was great.

Awesome game
4 Star Review   By member evophile - Jul 28, 2008

Strengths: amazing graphics for psp, fun gameplay

Weakness: some randomness in the battles

The long awaited return to the Final Fantasy 7 universe. It's what fans have been waiting for and this game doesn't disappoint. Rather than being a RPG this game takes on an action RPG format similar to the Kingdom Hearts series also from Square. You play as Zack, who is a character you meet earlier, making this game a prequel. The action is fast and in real time and you take on enemies face to face, with lots of other abilities you learn along such as magic and defensive attacks. The graphics in this game are astounding, the best you will see on the PSP thus far. The sound is great too. If you want a great game for the PSP, or love the Final Fantasy series you owe it to yourself to pick this game up.

Not Just for Final Fantasy VII Fans
5 Star Review   By member rpnguyen - Jul 22, 2008

Strengths: Solid Graphics, Easy to pick up for portable sessions

Weakness: Lengthy load times, stubborn camera, can't skip cutscenes

Crisis Core visits the events before Final Fantasy VII, and you're in control of Zack Fair, Cloud's big brother of sorts. The graphics are the best I've ever seen on a portable, and battle is intuitive and fun, especially with the slot/reel system. There are a lot of quick side missions to do, which is perfect for portable purposes. The camera can be a little stubborn at times, getting stuck against the wall etc., but it's nothing gamebreaking. One problem is that load times for entering/exiting cutscenes can be lengthy, and you can't skip them in any way. But otherwise, this is a great game for PSP, and I recommend to anyone who owns a PSP, not just FFVII fans.

FF: Crisis Core (PSP)
5 Star Review   By member keelie - Jul 10, 2008

Strengths: Story, gameplay

Weakness: Repetition

FF Crisis Core explores the major events that lead to FF VII. You play Zack Fair who is a young member of SOLDIER from Shinra and has to investigate the mystery of SOLDIER members gone missing during missions. The battle system used in the game is known as Digital Mind Wave. It has a slot machine like reels that continue to spin as long as there are Soldier Points to consume. When the reels line up with the same character and value, you get a power-up. The battle system also allows you to have full control over Zack and battle against enemies in a real time fashion. Cut scenes are stunning but the voice over may leave a lot to be desired. Graphics and music are great. It is one of the best looking games on the PSP.

Final Fantasy: Crisis Core
5 Star Review   By member eau697 - Jul 10, 2008

Strengths: Graphics, Cinematic, Music, gameplay

Weakness: Repetitive

Final Fantasy: Crisis Core is a prequel to the popular Final Fantasy VII video game. It focuses on the story of the first-class soldier of Shinra named Zack that leads to the major events in FF:VII. This game is a action RPG with excellent, real-time battle system, which is a nice deviation from the traditional turn-based battle system found in other Final Fantasy games. Power ups and level ups are random and achieved through a slot machine mechanism during battles. Cut scenes are breadth taking. Graphics and music are top notched. Voice acting is good too. The only drawback is the somewhat repetitiveness in battles. FF Crisis Core is a must have game for FF:VII diehard fans. It is also very playable for causal games who want some decent storytelling and action-RPG battles.

FF: Crisis Core Review
5 Star Review   By member argylega - Jul 9, 2008

Strengths: Some of the best graphics on the psp, great nostalgia factor, very fun fast-paced combat, mission based gameplay is great for "on the go" play, incredible soundtrack

Weakness: You need to have played FF7 to fully understand/appreciate the story

Easily one of the best games on the PSP. Crisis Core will hook any veteran FF7 players immediately with familiar characters, world & a soundtrack that contains some excellent remixed themes from the old game. New players will enjoy the game too, they just probably won't get as much out of the story. The game is broken up into missions, with random battles but real-time combat that works very well. This is the perfect "to go" game, because it's easy to pick it up & play a quick mission or two. Very highly recommended to anyone with a PSP and arms. Buy it.

Great Portable RPG
4 Star Review   By member normietrice - Jul 6, 2008

Strengths: Graphics, Cutscenes, Music

Weakness: Repetitive gameplay, Dialogue, Load times

Crisis Core is a great game and a must have for the PSP. The graphics are very clean and the cutscenes are what you would expect from a Final Fantasy game. The music is also great and fits with whatever is happening in the game. Crisis Core uses real time fighting gameplay unlike most previous Final Fantasy games. However, you enter a different battle screen so you have to fight within the screen area. Encounters with enemies are also predominantly random. This is the first FF game that I've played that strayed from turn-based combat and I think it works well in this game. Parallel to the main story is missions that you can complete for items and additional story lines. These missions are pretty tedious as you basically have to go through an area until you find the monster(s) you have to fight. Some of the missions have a ton of random encounters so every 5 steps you take, you're facing an enemy. The dialogue is pretty awkward at times though the voice acting is pretty solid. The story is pretty hard to follow as well. Another big downside is the load times. Crisis Core is still a superb game. It has all the things you'd expect from a FF title.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
5 Star Review   By member shipwreck1 - Jun 30, 2008

Strengths: Good story, good battle system, lots of replay value

Weakness: Maybe a little too much replay value?

Crisis Core does an excellent job of fleshing out the events that lead up to the classic Final Fantasy VII. Ditching the turn-based battles, the game is a real-time action game with RPG elements. The characters are interesting and there are a lot of optional side quests to compliment the main story missions. Overall, it is one of the best games on the PSP and should keep you entertained throughout.

The best RPG for PSP!!
4 Star Review   By member chibi_conan - Jun 12, 2008

Strengths: Kingdom Hearts' battle system and amazing CG cut scenes.

Weakness: The game gets repetitive fast.

Square took the main elements of, already unique Final Fantasy VII, combined them with Kingdom Hearts' real time battle system and you get Crisis Core. A decent combat mechanism, except gambling and Final Fantasy don't mix. Power ups/level ups are total random since you get them through slot machine, it's quite annoying. Voice actings are tolerable, not perfect though. I highly recommend, especially to Final Fantasy fans.

Fantastic
5 Star Review   By member yakkotank - Jun 11, 2008

Strengths: Excellent graphics, music, battles, story...

Weakness: Somewhat repetitive (especially when it comes to missions)

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core is among the very best PSP games. Boasting some of the best graphics and music of any PSP game, Crisis Core has a battle system not unlike the GBA's Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. As such, the battles are more engaging than standard turn-based affairs. The story and localization is outstanding, as well. For diehards, there are hundreds of bonus missions to pad out the length. Highly recommended, not just for fans of FFVII.

Best PSP Game
5 Star Review   By member JBU292 - Jun 6, 2008

Strengths: Graphics, Amount of Gameplay, Great Storyline

Weakness: Controls, Repetition

If you own a PSP, this game is a must have for your collection. This is probably one of the best PSP games available. The graphics are absolutely stunning for a PSP game and the amount of gameplay will keep you occupied for hours. Althogh, some of the gameplay controls will take a while to get used to. Also, a few of the battles and mission will get a little repetitive after a while. Overall, this is one of the best games to come out for the PSP. A must get!

One of the best game for PSP
5 Star Review   By member aeonsx - May 29, 2008

Strengths: Final Fantasy VII prequel Nice graphic and solid action RPG with good combat system Many side missions

Weakness: Missions got repetition

The game is very good not like other FFVII compliment game (FFVII-DoC). The combat system is fun and with nice visual and the voice acting is good. The missions are fun, but sometime it just too much repetition, some people might like it, some don't. Overall, it's the game to get not just for FFVII fan, but every PSP owner.

FF VII crisis core
4 Star Review   By member psincubus - May 22, 2008

Strengths: fun to play, good music

Weakness: tedious, boring characters

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII. The game is good, but not great. Zack is a boring main character, and was more annoying than likable. The main reason to play the game is to get a backstory of what happened leading up to Sephiroth's insanity. In this regard it was pretty good. Otherwise, it was a struggle to get through it all. Worth it for some, maybe not for others.

One of the best rpgs this year 2008 for psp
5 Star Review   By member lobitoh - May 21, 2008

Strengths: Great graphics, great story

Weakness: Some delays during battle system

This is one of the best games ever played for the psp. This is a prequel story from the best seller rpg Final Fantasy 7. You control Zack who is one of the best 1st Class soldier from Shinra and live his story part. The game contains some characters from the best seller during their role before the sequel. The game graphics are the best from the animators of the Final Fantasy Advent Children animation. The battle system is new, you have active time screen and all field movement. The accessories are customizable and you can Mix Materias to create more powerful ones. The game contains a lot of unlockable sidequest (missions) which will make you enjoy hours of gameplay. I recommend this game for those hardcore Final Fantasy fans and the newcomers. Is a Must have.

Great Game
5 Star Review   By member aaronallday - Apr 26, 2008

Strengths: Gameplay, Story, Visuals

This game is one of the best games I have played on PSP. The storyline really has that nostalgic factor and brings back memories from FF7. Although at first it seems too easy, it gets challenging and gets you hooked to the story. It is simply a great prequel and should be bought whether you are a Final Fantasy fan or not.
