4.5 Star Review  GameZone - Dec 4, 2002

You have to hand it to Sega Sports, they sure know how to make really enjoyable sports titles as it has been seen this year with the stellar NBA 2K3 as well as the excellent NFL 2K3. And not to leave hockey fans behind, NHL 2K3 brings intense hockey action to the mix with plenty of teams and--go ahead and let out a loud cheer--you can play this one on the Xbox Live service . . . so trash talk is definitely encouraged. For those gamers unfamiliar with the Sega Sports series from the days of the Sega Dreamcast, NHL 2K3 plays a bit more like an arcade-styled sports game than a true hockey simulator like the kind released by EA Sports.

4.5 Star Review  GameSpy - Dec 11, 2002

For Xboxers who are fans of hockey action, Lord Stanley's cup runneth over. Way over. This season they'll have the win-win choice between two extremely solid hockey titles. EA Sports' NHL series has been a multi-platform darling for years, but it's Sega Sports' NHL 2K3 that could unseat it as king of the rink.

We check Sega's latest hockey endeavor against the boards. Does it cry like a baby or elbow us in the nose?

4 Star Review   By member haftaski - May 23, 2003

Strengths: VERY REALISTIC! Graphics are superb! Replay - different angles on the replay, fighting. Various skill levels. I cannot say enough!

Weakness: Can be a bit complicated with all the different buttons/commands. Lack of a "training camp".

I am a hardcore hockey fan (and play recreationally as well.) This game is the next best thing to watching my favorite NHL tema play, or getting on the ice myself! The controller is a bid complicated - I am learning the game and find that I have to keep referring to the manual to figure out how to get a player to check, shoot, kick the puck, etc. But that will come in time, as I learn the game. The game would be MUCH better if they had a "training camp" mode, where you can practice in a non-game situation so that you can learn the controls faster.
