Need for Speed Carbon
4 Star Review  GameZone - Nov 20, 2006

Need for Speed Carbon is this fall’s entry in EA’s long-running racing franchise, and it takes the race back to the city streets. More of an evolution than a reinvention of the series, Carbon carries on the feel of the Underground games released a few years ago, emphasizing city-street racing and tuning. Carbon also adds some new concepts to the formula, some that work and some that don’t. However, all things considered, NFS Carbon is a solid entry that brings some great ideas and concepts to the series and would be a worthy addition to your fledging PS3 library if you’re a fan of the series or racing games in general.

Need for Speed: Carbon
4 Star Review   By member keelie - Oct 2, 2008

Strengths: Graphics, racing

Weakness: Short

Need for Speed: Carbon is a worthy sequel to the beloved NFS: Most Wanted. Graphics is excellent. The cars and environment look very realistic. It's almost like playing behind the wheel except without G forces. Drifting is great in this game. Although drifting is not realistic but it adds a lot of fun factors to the game. Sound and music is working very well too. The only complain is that this game is rather short. You can probably complete it within half a week.

Average arcadey driving game by today's standards
2 Star Review   By member ryu_ken - Mar 10, 2008

Strengths: Graphics are better than PS2's; the premise of the game is a little different from other driving games

Weakness: Graphics don't fare well against today's PS3 games; game feels average all-around

I was pretty disappointed with this game, but the problem might be more with my expectations. I believe Need for Speed: Carbon was a PS3 launch title. In other words, it came out way back when the PS3 first came out, which was over a year ago. It probably wasn't a bad game back then, but the bar has been raised since then by games like Motorstorm and Burnout: Paradise. For example, the graphics in Need for Speed: Carbon are definitely better than the graphics in old Playstation 2 games, but they also clearly pale in comparison to Motorstorm's graphics and Burnout:Paradise's graphics. After seeing those games, Need for Speed: Carbon looks a bit grainy to me. The premise of Need for Speed: Carbon is still unique, I guess. There's a map of territories and you race rival gangs to take control of each territory. After taking control of a territory, you may still have to race to defend it from challengers trying to take it back. In the end though, it's still just racing, and, as an arcade-style racer (not to be confused with simulation racers like Gran Turismo which takes everything hyperseriously), it's simply average. Cars within a respective category don't really feel all that different from one another. It's like they're just different looks for essentially the same vehicle. The cars handle ridiculously well, taking most corners at very high speeds without much problem, making the races maybe too easy. I pretty much got bored of this game right away and haven't played much of it since. In fact, I don't think I've gone back to it at all. Again, this game might have been good in its day, but, for a good arcade racer these days, I recommend Burnout: Paradise way before I recommend this. I would also recommend Motorstorm before this, even though, yes, I know Motorstorm (being offroad) and Need for Speed: Carbon aren't exactly the same types of racers.

Need for Speed Carbon
4 Star Review   By member aakk - Feb 10, 2008

Strengths: Good Graphics, online

Weakness: missing some little but nice features

Need for Speed Carbon is a great racing game for the PS3. The graphics is good, especially when you are driving at over 120 mph. It is nice that they removed the free roam feature and you can now just jump straight to the race events. Moreover, it is really fun to play with other people online. But there are some little but nice features missing in this game, such as drag, replays and the cars that couldn't be as customizable as they were. Overall I am still satisfied with it.

NFS Carbon
5 Star Review   By member keviny - Jan 24, 2008

Strengths: Great Game, Great Graphics

I like it very much. It is really a great game. The graphics looks good on my HDTV. Depending on the skill level, the further you go, the harder this game will be. NFS Carbon had a sense of style, a great storyline, but most importantly was quite fun and diverse. The storyline is rather unique and gives you a personality. You are a character that you never talk or have a face. It would have been nice if they allowed players to personalize that aspect more. This game's career mode actually goes by pretty fast since you don't have to race a whole lot or run from cops to scoring points to get to the boss

Need for Speed: Carbon PS3
4 Star Review   By member netprofits - Jan 7, 2008

Strengths: Great graphics and cool cars. Online gaming is nice also.

Weakness: Some may consider the game too short, but still tons of fun regardless.

This is a very fun game with lots of sweet race options, including drifting. The graphics are really good as is the sound. There are a lot of cool cars and the ability to customize them is great. Some say the game is short, but I really enjoy it and can spend countless hours playing. I'm looking forward to the next releases due out.

Fun but soulless racer
3 Star Review   By member justin42 - Nov 30, 2007

Strengths: Decent graphics, fun to play for a while

Weakness: Feels a bit confused/schizophrenic to me, some framerate issues on the PS3

NFS Carbon is the latest in the long series of Need for Speed games. EA is a tough position with these games, if they're too similar, people won't buy them, but too different and they stray from the series. After the excellent Most Wanted, Carbon feels a bit like EA didn't want to stray too far from what's been working, but had to tweak it up. The result is a fun game that feels like Need for Speed, but seems a bit too confused as to what it's trying to be to really stand out from the crowd. The canyon races are fun and some can be very challenging. The graphics, while overall quite good, do tend to have some framerate issues (and/or screen tearing) on the PS3 that hurts the sense of realism or immersion. Overall, I think Most Wanted and the Underground games are better Need for Speed games overall. Carbon feels like it tries to meld the 2 series to varying success. If you can find it cheap, or REALLY enjoy the Need for Speed series, tweaking cars, etc, it's a good deal, but don't expect a huge overhaul of the series.

Carbon
4 Star Review   By member infini2001 - Oct 17, 2007

Strengths: good graphics and sounds. Many options to choose cars and races.

Weakness: Racing control.

I own Xbox360 version, and I got this game as a gift. So I played it on my PS3. My impression is the same that I had with Xbox 360 version. This is a good race game, good graphics, many cars, and many race options. But it is a little bit tight when you try to control your racing car... Overall, it is fun game to play.

Need for Speed Carbon
4 Star Review   By member aramirez - Sep 24, 2007

Strengths: Great graphics, control of cars is really nice

Weakness: Not much more of a story line then previous versions, quick to beat the game.

The game is real fun when playing online with others. Wish there were additional packs so that you can expand on the game, which seems like a logical progression rather than putting out a new game.

Showcase your ps3 power!
4 Star Review   By member mrtwo - Jul 4, 2007

Strengths: Great sense of speed! Awesome Graphics!

Weakness: Can't think of any

A very fun game. Driving around and challenging people is cool. I must admit that playing online, I got beat very easily so I don't know how they balance the players out. Sticking rookies up against vets doesn't seem to be as fun online. I would prefer it to be a little more even to begin with. Playing offline is fun and as stated, the graphics are awesome! The lighting and textures look great in high definition! Very quick and fun game!

NFS: Carbon Review
5 Star Review   By member econsipia - Mar 24, 2007

Strengths: Great Game, Great Graphics

Weakness: I believe that its weakness is that I believe is not challenging as previous version

It is a great game with great graphics and cars with enhanced controls. The game experience is very fun and exciting especially when you play multi-player as well as playing online with up to 8 players and it is very challenging with enhanced wheeling control.

The Sequel: The Best
5 Star Review   By member Hoosiers3DJW - Mar 19, 2007

Strengths: Great graphics, with a wide variety of cars to choose from. Bosses are interesting and unique in their own way. Is also very easy to learn.

Weakness: No known faults, but is relatively short.

This sequel to Need For Speed: Most Wanted is great although it is short. If you know what you are doing, you can beat the game in about three days. This game does ahve it's upsides, however, for it has great graphics, sound effects, etc.

real as it gets
4 Star Review   By member ChrisO - Mar 9, 2007

Strengths: graphics look so damn real u dont need an hd tv, so fun its addictive, great selection of fast easy to drive vehicles, good storyline, dramatic and so fun to get chased by and bust up cops

Weakness: a little short, a little too easy and the bosses are annoying to hear them talking.

this game does a great job at showing off ps3 power with graphics and gameplay. This game is really fun and addictive but it could be longer, but i don't see how it could be. But it's long enough. It's a game where u can just pick up a car and go race-no problems and no tough technical stuff. A newby who doesnt know anything about cars can be an ace at this game. Messing with the cops in this game is so fun and the game is dramatic in a lot of cases. The movies are cool too (Nikki is real hot). If you want a fun car game you just wanna play for hours that looks realistic everwhere then get NFS Carbon.

Need For Speed Carbon
5 Star Review   By member crailstrails23 - Feb 5, 2007

Strengths: Mostly everything about it. The cars and graphics were ridiculous. You don't need an HD cord. Difficulty was fine. The sound and handling of cars was sweet. The drift races were so much fun.

Weakness: Starting out with weak cars always sucks but, its good for the progression. Loosing to the boss and having to start back a couple of races was frustrating. The help driver aspect kind of sucked.

I loved the game, and when I finished, I had a pimped out Lambo Gallardo, Carera GT, my favorite, and a rally machine WRX. I want that to be my garage in a few years. I feel that the driving was very realistic, and feel like I could really drive like that. Probably a bad thing but hey the game took over a good few days of my life and I'm not complaining. I wish I could play online and race others. THe short cuts were hard to find. The paint jobs and upgrades were sick. For anyone who likes cars, or wants to play a good racing game.
