Sony PlayStation 3 (40GB)
4 Star Review  cnet.com - Nov 9, 2007

THE GOOD: Swanky design with quiet operation; all games in high-definition; PSP-like easy-to-use interface; plays high-def Profile 2.0 Blu-ray movies in addition to upscaling standard DVDs; built-in Wi-Fi; 40GB hard drive; online play is free; HDMI output with 1080p support; no external power supply. THE BAD: No flash media reader; cant play PS2 games; doesnt include rumble controller; a USB port on the back wouldve been nice; no infrared port means non-Bluetooth universal remotes arent compatible; glossy black finish is a fingerprint magnet; online gaming, media, and commerce options not nearly as developed as Xbox Live. THE BOTTOM LINE: While Sony has cut a few corners to get its entry-level PlayStation 3 below $400, its still a great game console and Blu-ray player for the money--so long as you can live without backward compatibility for PS2 games.

Blown Away!
5 Star Review   By member jollysue - Aug 19, 2008

Strengths: all inclusive and does everything well

Weakness: learning to use the remote :D

I got this instead of a Blu-ray player. I am still learning to use it, but it is awesome. I am looking forward to getting it on the internet. This is definitely a great choice for a HD home theater. Be sure to use all the lastest gadgets and cables to hook it up to your other equipment. I got a professional to hook it up. You will be blown away by Blu-ray!

The Best
5 Star Review

Strengths: MLB games the best on PS3 which is exclusive, built in wi-fi, free online gaming, GTA IV and Gran Turismo 5, upgradeable HDD.

Weakness: No PS2 support but not really needed

I owned my Xbox 360 first got the Nintendo Wii second and got this 40gb PS3 on christmas. The Xbox died 3 times and Microsofts support people are rude and stupid I got back an old console and it sounds like a lawn mower. My PS3 on the other hand is great, silent, and shiny. The blu-ray makes a big difference in HD and I just love MLB 08 the show for PS3 best baseball game thats a sony exclusive. That could be one reason but theres the new dualshock 3 which is great though it should have been included once the lawsuit was over with the immersion people but thats ok. Grand Theft Auto IV should only be played on PS3 Its the best, but the online was sluggish but an update fixed that only 60gb ps3's still have problems with gta. I actually use my ps3 more than my 360 and I have more 360 games. This is just a more enjoyable system, and if you ever had a psp or used one the gui/os is almost the same except some added stuff. Online gameplay is free no paying for xbl like I do but stopped since then. Buy this and you won't regret it. Also if space is necessary they have 2.5 sata hdd that fit I have 160gb but they go up to 500gb! PS3 is king and has no internal problems for what your paying for!!!

PS3 40G console
5 Star Review   By member chiwai - Apr 30, 2008

Strengths: Quiet, less heat than other PS3 models

Weakness: not compatible to old PS2 games

PS3 is a great console. I indeed like playing this over Wii. The main reason is that I can download playable demo of new games, such that I can try playing to see which games I really like to buy it. In addition, being a Blu-ray player is a plus.

PS3 and free Blu-ray movies
4 Star Review   By member mytime - Mar 1, 2008

Strengths: Great graphics, free online play, Blu-ray player.

Weakness: Games are a bit expensive, as are the extra controllers and other accessories. It scratches rather easy.

This is a great product. The system was put together very well, it’s very sturdy. I loved playing Assassins Creed on it, it has great graphics. The Six-axis feature is very fun to use. Being able to play online free is also a big plus. This is a great buy, and I recommend it to anyone who likes consoles.

Playstation 3 40GB
5 Star Review   By member etm123 - Feb 21, 2008

Strengths: Blu-Ray HD, 1080P

Weakness: Cost of console and accessories (i.e. extra controller & remote)

The Sony PS3 is an awesome do everything home entertainment unit. For the price of a stand alone BLu-Ray player, the PS3 is the way to go. Beautiful Blu-Ray playback in full 1080P HD. Also once connected to the internet, the firmware stays up to date and one can purchase additional games, view movie trailers and surf the web.

Great, just great
5 Star Review   By member DKUNITED - Feb 7, 2008

Strengths: Great multimedia feature (DivX playback, web browser, etc), USB interface, and best of all, Blu-ray drive!

Weakness: Lack of Dualshock 3 controller, Lack of killer title

When Sony introduced PS3, they expected it to be not just gaming console but also a part of Home Theatre setup. All I can say is Sony really did well. With the most recent firmware update, it's now able to play lots of video files. You can simply put your videos, musics, pictures, etc, into USB drive. Just plug the USB drive in, and you now have great multimedia player with capable of virtually most of major file formats. Also, thanks to its USB interface, which lets you use most if not all of the USB accessories from keyboard to headset. And best of all, built-in Blu-ray drive is just awesome. With High-def media war one step closer to the end, Blu-ray is far superior against its rival, HD-DVD. At least, BD has much brighter feature than HD-DVD now, and you are ready to enjoy BD movie with PS3. Of course, it does have weakness. First all, while they have great games, yet lack of killer titles might be downhill against its arch rival, XBOX360. Most of PS3 titles are cross platform. But beginning with Gran Turismo 5: Prologue this spring and Metal Gear Solid 5 this summer, there will be PS3 exclusive titles. Ready to "real" game. Also, a lack of Dual Shock 3 controller in bundle might be downhill for some. As I didn't enjoy the vibration with Dual Shock 1 (PS One) and 2 (PS2) anyway, it wasn't a big deal to me. But I am pretty sure at some point, Sony will start to include the controller as a bundle. But for me, SIXAXIS is still a good controller. So far, I have been enjoying numerous features from PS3, and expecting it will be continued!

PS3 - What an amazing machine!
5 Star Review

Strengths: Blu-Ray Player, graphics, bluetooth

Weakness: Cost

The Playstation 3 is by far the best gaming console I have ever owned. Sony definately had the user in mind when designing this system. Not only are the PS3's games outstanding, but the built in blu-ray player pushes this machine from great to unbelievable!!! Although the purchase of the Playstation 3 may cause you to dig deep into your wallet, it is certainly worth every last dime!

Good entertaintment system, overpriced however BLU RAY makes up for it
3 Star Review   By member navigatoris - Jan 22, 2008

Strengths: Blu Ray playback, easy PSP like menu

Weakness: No HDMI cable included, cannot play PS2/PS1 games unless you buy the high end 80GB edition.

Excellent for playing Blu Ray movies, includes a Wireless PS3 Sixaxis remote, however I have found the cable to charge it to be too short. The graphics are OK, but my best friends XBOX 360 two years old has a more powerful graphics processor than the PS3, however it lacks HDMI. New XBOX 360 (elite) include said HDMI output, and for the extra money you get a way better system (graphics wise, in my opinion). My recommendation is to buy an HDMI cable and enjoy the console, I have found no problems with it but I did not buy it to play games, I bought it to play Blu Ray movies.

40GB Playstation 3
4 Star Review   By member SevereTrauma - Jan 20, 2008

Strengths: Graphics, Blue Ray, Free Online

Weakness: No backwards compatibility

The 40GB PS3 is the way to go if you dont care about playing all your old PS2 games. I just picked one up today and love it. I dont like that they didnt include BC in all the versions but i wasn't going to play old games anyways so I save myself the $100 and went with this. I've played a few games and watched a Blue Ray. The blue ray looks incredible and the games look awesome as well. The six axis controller is very light weight and I'm liking this as well. I havent played online yet but signed up and it was nice not having to pay. You can download trailers and demos for free as well. So far a great buy.

Sony PlayStation 3 40GB Console w/Spiderman 3 Blu-ray Disc
5 Star Review   By member tmoble2 - Jan 10, 2008

Strengths: 40GB Storage capacity/State of the art gaming system/Built-in Blu-ray disc player/Wireless controller

Weakness: Backwards compatibility/Included Spiderman 3 Blu-ray disc is only the version containing the movie, it did not include the version containing both the movie and the special features!

This is the one of the best multimedia entertainment and gaming systems that I have ever experienced! The visual effects on the newer state of the art games are amazing and the picture quality on the newer technology Blu-ray movies is extremely amazing! The only thing that I was disappointed about was that the included Spiderman 3 Blu-ray disc was only the version containing the movie, and it did not include the version containing both the movie and the special features! I am an avid movie buff and a big fan of watching the bonus and special features and this was extremely disappointing, especially since this was a major purchase for me!

Good for both blu-ray and game player
4 Star Review   By member happyusmle - Jan 7, 2008

Strengths: PC+blu-ray+game

Weakness: pricey for game and blu-ray disc

PS3 is pricey, but a side-by-side comparison with Xbox 360 reveals it’s a better value. Included on the PlayStation 3: Integrated Blu-ray player, web browser, and WiFi. Unlike Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 also offers free access to its online environment. PlayStation has its multimedia role with strong photo and slide-show support with Memory Stick Duo, SD & Compact Flash Slots on its high-end models.

Top of the line
4 Star Review   By member brian13579 - Jan 6, 2008

Strengths: Sturdy/solid unit, very powerful, can be networked and can access the Internet

Weakness: A bit pricey, runs quite warm, doesn't play PS2 games (at least not the 40 Gb version, according to other reviews), only two USB ports so need USB hub for Rock Band

This is really quite an amazing product. This is very well built - no shortcuts on quality here. The unit is very sturdy and solid; this is not a cheap plastic box! What one really has here is a powerful computer packaged as a game system. The interfaces on this unit are sweet - USB connections for the accessories! For once Sony hasn't gone with their own proprietary interface. However, there are only two USB ports so for Rock Band, you will need a USB hub if you want more than two players. Be sure to get a US 2.0 hub since it looks like a USB 1.0 will cause problems. This system only comes with standard A/V cables so if you want HiDef, you need to buy a component or HDMI cable (this is where Sony did go with their own proprietary connections). This will cost at least $20 for the component and more for the HDMI. Also, this unit runs pretty warm. Be sure to use adequate ventilation.

Great for Home Theater
5 Star Review   By member dautelle - Dec 29, 2007

Strengths: Blue-Ray Disc Player

Weakness: Cannot really be used as a Linux box (very limited graphic support then).

The PS3 has been connected to the home theater in my barn, hd projector, 100 inches screen, 7 speakers surround sound... Playing blue-ray disc movies is astounding (way better than at the movie theater). Playing games (such as Motor-storm) is quite addictive, tons of fun for the kids and growned up alike... Well worth the 400$. And yes, if you wonder, Blue-Ray Disc is the winner of the format war (I get all my blue-ray disc movies from Blockbuster online).

PS3 40gb w/ Spiderman BluRay DVD
5 Star Review   By member thegoldglover - Dec 27, 2007

Strengths: HD gaming, Blu Ray DVD player

Weakness: Could've included the DVD remote instead of being a $25 option.

This is a great system for a next generation DVD player. I received this as a Blu Ray DVD player and nbot mainly as a gaming system but I will be rocking out to RockBand once my local Circuit City has it back in stock. With this system you don't run the chance of having a $400 paper weight if for some crazy reason HD DVD wins the war (which I don't believe they will)you'll still have a great gaming system. Picture quality is incredible coupled with my Samsung 56" DLP HDTV with output ot 1080p. Who needs to go to a theater! This picture is way better than any local cinema.

Great Christmas Gift!
5 Star Review   By member SharonKrebs - Dec 26, 2007

Strengths: Amazing quality, sleek design, no memory card, wireless-awesome system.

Weakness: A bit expensive.

I didn't have a problem getting it to play ps2 games, they worked just as well as the 3s. It's really a cool system, now we are getting a HDTV so that we can use the blue ray feature to it's fullest (you can't see a major difference unless you have the "whole" system). Can't wait to watch 300 in HighDef! I would really suggest it, the only issue I've got is that it's pretty expensive right now. For someone who is really in to games or movies it's worth it though!

No PS2 play
3 Star Review   By member ejmonroe - Dec 22, 2007

Strengths: Nice on line interaction

Weakness: Cannot play any of our PS2 games on it as it was advertised it could.

Am very disappointed that PS2 games connot be played. That was one of the main reasons we decided to buy this system over the others. Hope they came out with a software patch that will allow it to work as claimed.
