Fatal Frame
4.5 Star Review  GameZone - Mar 8, 2002

You know … I often reminisce about a time where I sat around chugging through “Haunted House” on Atari 2600 and thinking how neat it would be if they really made games which would scare the heck out of people. Lo and behold, many years later … we were graced with some really scary titles such as 7th Guest, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Godai : Elemental Force (That last one is scary in a different kind of way. Okay, bad joke … bad game .. sorry). Tecmo has now entered the survival horror arena with Fatal Frame. I am happy to report that after many hours of lost sleep, hearing things that weren’t really there, and near fatal heart attacks it definitely is not only the most terrifying game experience I have ever had, but one of the more solid ones I have had as well.

Fatal Frame (ps2)
4 Star Review  IGN.com - Mar 5, 2002

Fatal Frame has nothing to do with any of that. It is, in fact, quite an inventive piece of survival horror, managing to keep the fright up and the frustration down with a few smart design decisions and an abundance of creepy style. You have all probably heard of the central gimmick -- our heroine fends off the lurking terror with the power of an enchanted camera -- but the more you play the game, the less noteworthy that asset becomes in the face of a genuinely well-crafted thriller package. It's a better-looking game than we would have expected from an unknown development team at Tecmo, with a serviceable engine guided by a steady artistic hand.

Fatal Frame
5 Star Review   By member Jammerdez1 - Jun 26, 2006

Strengths: Excellent scare factor, cool idea

Weakness: none really

This game is what being scared is all about. This is not for the light hearted or easily scared. Anyone that hasn't stopped reading so far will be pleasantly surprised to find that this game rocks! The simplistic idea of taking pictures to dispatch ghosts, mixed with the abilities to upgrade the camera and go through different levels, each with a mystery to solve as you come closer and closer to finding out what truly happened to your brother all mix to make one of the greatest survival horror games ever. As I said before, if you're not easily scared, I recommend you stop playing anything you are currently playing and pick this up immediately.

Scariest Game EVER
5 Star Review   By member Pookymeister - May 5, 2006

Strengths: Atmospheric Horror game - ingenious storyline - scares you out of your wits

Weakness: None Apparent

This game has an interesting premise. Your character is trying to search for her brother, and uses her super camera to fend off evil spirits. Seriously though, this is one of the most scary games out there. Have you seen those flash movies where a ghost suddenly screams at you out of nowhere for the shock scare? Well, that is straight out of this game! Fans of games like Silent Hill, and Resident Evil to an extent will LOVE this game. Unfortunately, it is kind of hard to find - especially a new copy. But is worth the effort!

A good survival horror title
5 Star Review   By member Warner1281 - Dec 29, 2005

Strengths: Better than most games in the survival horror genre, graphics are stunning, game is scary

Weakness: Controls are a bit difficult (ala- Resident Evil)

For anyone looking to pick up a good survival horror type game, this is the game to get. This game gives you the ability to truly immerse yourself in it with great surround sound, creepy graphics, and a wonderful storyline. As Miyu, you carry a camera capturing spirits in it as you try to discover what has become of your brother... sound cheesy? Well maybe it does, but once you get into the game, those thoughts will go right out the window. I bought this game as a recommendation from a friend and I am 100% satisfied with it. I could not thank my friend enough and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I have.

The scariest game I have played.
5 Star Review   By member berserker_kev - Sep 11, 2005

Strengths: extremely rich atmosphere, sound effects, graphics, different gameplay.

Weakness: controls.

If ever there was a game I would recommend to a survival horror fan then this game would be on top. This is by far the scariest game I have ever played. The atmosphere is so intriguing and set up so nicely through the use of sound effects that will make you feel a constant dread of walking down each hallway or entering a specific room. The game will sometimes scare you by having a random ghost or voice just pop out of nowhere. If you have a surround setup this game will own you. The graphics are really good - the characters look well detailed as do the ghost. The gameplay is unique in that you do not actually attack the ghost psychically, but you take shots of them with a camera that consumes them. The only flaw is the controls can sometimes feel a bit clunky, but that can definitly be forgiven for the overall scary experience that this game will provide the player with.

5 Star Review   By member Roufuss - Jul 1, 2005

Strengths: Great setting and premise, good scares as well. Very original.

Weakness: None that I can think of.

Fatal Frame takes a unique twist on the classic survival horror genre. Armed only with a camera with which to dispatch ghosts, it's up to you to keep your wits and unsolve the mysteries that are all around you. Prepare for some genuine thrills, it's best to play this game with the lights off at night for maximum effect. Fans of survival horror should DEFINATELY check it out, highly recommended!
