Shadow of the Colossus
5 Star Review  GameZone - Oct 19, 2005

“I was told that in this place at the ends of the world, there exists a being who can control the souls of the dead.” It starts with a widescreen picture and the images of a bird soaring through the sky. The camera pans around to show the beautiful scenery. Magnified by the ICO touch, it is the true definition of a polygon-perfect title. Seconds after we’ve gazed into the sunlight and discovered that the analog stick can control the camera during this real-time scene, the game focuses on a man determined to change someone’s fate. He couldn’t care less about his own well being.

5 Star Review   By member Bigtimegamer28 - Dec 1, 2006

Strengths: EVERY SINGLE THING

Weakness: FLAWLESS

When I first played this game I knew it was a must have. The Graphics are great and storyline is second to none. The Sence of victory you get after defeating a colossi is glorious. The Horse in the game, (Arrow) brows close to you throughout the game. Fighting with him by your side pretty much makes this game complete. Tanner Downs, 15 Ash Grove MO

shadow of the colossus is an awesome experience. this game is so good that it almost seems weird to call it a game. they really took their time and made colossus the best it could be and it shows... the graphics are probably the best the ps2 is capable of. but it's not just how it looks. gameplay, sound, story, all are perfect. just play it!

Shadow of Colossus
5 Star Review   By member pluto2 - Mar 9, 2006

Strengths: The Gameplay in this game is fantastic it is also quite original though the most outstanding point about this game is it's wonderful graphics, very impressive for a PS2.

Weakness: The game shows no weakness apart from the fact that after completing the great story line, playing it again is only half the fun.

This is possibly the best game out for over 5 years. I'm surprised that the game hasn't auwed the gaming public in amazment! If you have £30 in your wallet forget about anything else and get down to your nearest game store.

Shadow of the Colossus
5 Star Review   By member mojave - Mar 4, 2006

Strengths: Unique gameplay elements, great atmosphere

Weakness: Graphics a slight disappointment, control loose

Shadow of the Colossus was hyped as one of the most unique game experiences to come about on the PS2 in a long time. While I agree with that sentiment, I am a bit disappointed in the graphics and control mechanism (both of which were also hyped at some point or another pre-release). The entire game takes place in a vast, empty land where you must hunt down and kill 16 Colossi, which are simply VERY large monsters. You take them down by riding up to them on your horse and then figuring out a way to get on the Colossus in order to find its weak points. You have a bow and a sword with which to do your damage. Some people have complained about the empty world and stark landscape. I think this is part of what makes the game great - it is nearly black and white and this bleakness adds greatly to the atmosphere the story is trying to project (that of a lone person facing great odds with no outside help). However, the detail and graphics, given this choice of style, are a bit disappointing, and there are occasional frame rate issues. Controlling your character can also be a bit tricky and while it is hard to pin down exactly what the issue is, there definitely seems to be some looseness to the control that makes the game more difficult than it should be. But both of those points are fairly minimal as the concept, overall gameplay, and most of all, the Colossi, are tremendous and make this a must get Playstation 2 title.

Ico-like world, different game
5 Star Review   By member kandlg - Mar 3, 2006

Strengths: Great graphics and scenes, huge environment, very unique

Weakness: Not for everybody

Shadow of the Colossus has the same great visuals and graphics as Ico, but is a very different game. As a little boy, your challenge is to defeat these huge Colossi. While Ico had environmental puzzles, the trick here is trying to discover the weaknesses of the bosses and bring them down. It's surprisingly challenging and entertaining and wonderful to watch. You could spend hours just riding around the environment.

An Amazing Journey
5 Star Review   By member CrashSpyro123 - Feb 28, 2006

Strengths: Looks great, good controls, great story, unique premise.

Weakness: That it has to end.

Shadow of the Colossus starts off with the young hero being told that the only way he could save his true love is to take down the extraordinary beasts called Colossi. Each Colossus you face is a new experience that needs a new plan of attack in order to take it down. There's usually some weakness that you must find, then figure out how to exploit it and then finish off the beast. You really become surpised at each the height, stature, and overall the fact that you're this tiny little boy climbing beasts several hundred times the size of yourself. The controls are pretty good for the game, though sometimes there's that little quirk that happens while you're in the heat of battle that's more a coincidence than the norm. Your horse, Argo, is a cool way to travel, as there's all sorts of things you can do while riding him. You can shoot your arrows, standing on his back while riding, and even jump off to try to catch the birds that sometimes follow as you ride. Your sword does more than kill, it's your main tool for finding the beasts, as you stick it up in the air, then aim it so that the beams of light point in one direction, and the controller will vibrate to show that you've found the right direction to go in. The only problem is that you usually have to head into these valleys to find the Colossi, where there's no sunlight, so you usually end up having to find some sun to make sure you're heading the right way. The trip to the final Colossus brings a unique semi-twist that makes you want to take down that Colossus for being the indirect cause of what you see on the way to him. After you defeat him, you learn the truth of what you've been doing and it all just tugs at your heart strings in an emotional series of cinematics that while they close the story, also provides some links to another game by the same developer, ICO. Shadow of the Colossus provides some of the best thrills you've ever seen in a videogame, especially with 16 "bosses" to take down. It's one of 2005's best games, so be sure to take the chance and get pulled into a great rollercoaster of a game.

Shadow of the Colossus
5 Star Review   By member terminal_dork - Feb 22, 2006

Strengths: Amazing Graphics and Sound, HUGE environment, fun and original gameplay

Weakness: Too short, too many questions left unanswered, no replay value, camera and horse uncooperative at times

Not your usual save the princess romp - the story is mysterious and compelling, the environment virtually endless. The motion physics really impressed me, because the character and his horse move the way you would really expect them to, as do the colossi, so it looks very real, as though you were playing a movie - sometimes the character even stumbles or loses his balance if the thing he is standing on moves, etc. The game consists of locating and destroying sixteen massive beasts with hidden weaknesses which you must exploit to defeat them. People don't seem to appreciate the lack of minibosses, but I think the idea behind this is that nothing else can survive in a land of giant monsters. If you consider the fact that most games have maybe five or six good boss fights with a hoard of lesser fiends, I tend to think that sixteen epic boss fights evens things out. There were a couple of times I got VERY frustrated with the horse and the camera. You have to rely on the horse for several battles, and this can be tricky. The camera is okay most of the time, but when you need it the most it screws you up, usually to the tune of having to repeat at least five minutes of gameplay while fighting a boss. Despite these flaws, still one of the best games out on the PS2.

Best game in a LOONNGG TIME!
5 Star Review

Strengths: Beatiful enviroment and intressting gameplay

Weakness: People must play the PS2 game "ICO" to truly understand the story behind the game.

Great game with beautiful landscapes and exciting gameplay. Long has it been since I feelt this kind of excitement over a game. Just the feeling of clinging on to the gigantic colossis for you dear life as they try to shake you of is priceless. All the animations is probably as close to real life as you probably can make them on a PS2. So far I know the only weakness with the game is that the background story of the game might be hard to understand if you havent played the PS2 game ICO first. Shadow of the Colossus shows that PS2 not gonna retire without a fight.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
5 Star Review

Strengths: Graphics, Movement of character and all creatures, landscape, tutorial, gameplay

Weakness: storyline, camera

Of all the things I can say about this game, beautiful is the only word that can encompass the entire game. From the very beginning this game shows its strengths and one of them is its tutorial. It is short. it gets you into the action, fast. As you travel on your clidedale of a mount you notice the landscape, you notice it alot. It is wide and beautiful and looks even better from on top of a colossus's head. From this vantage point you get an amazing sense of scale. The fighting is simple but very dynamic in the ways you can defeat the colossi. On the reverse side the camera is a pain and constatnly gets in the way. As you play longer it gets easier to manage but it still is a bother. The storyline is almost none existant. For some this is good but for me it was bad. I enjoy knowing the characters names...

5 Star Review   By member TheCommander - Feb 7, 2006

Strengths: Great visuals, stunning sound, unique, massive terrain, and simple yet epic battles.

Weakness: Lack of story, pesty camera, and a retarded horse.

At first glance this game looks amazing and it is.But,First glance at the beginning scene and i had my doubts. The story begins with a boy who looks and walks like a girl. You learn hes trying to save some girl.(Throughout the whole story the only names you learn are those of the horse and the god.)The boy takes the girl to the god mentioned beforewho says hell revive the girl....For a price. The boy must go out and slay 15 giants or collosi.Thats where the fun begins. The giants are absolutely amazing for a lack of better words. They even test your wits by giving you puzzles that you must solve to defeat the giants. This game is one of the best iv'e played and i highly recomend it.

Awesome
5 Star Review   By member Pookymeister - Feb 3, 2006

Strengths: Truly unique game - Graphics are pretty - immersive experience

Weakness: Camera can be clunky when you really don't want it to be

This game was really hyped up in the gaming world. Usually hyped games wind up not living up to what you might expect. But in this case, the game exceeds the hype. It really is a game that you never have seen before. And that is a good thing. Basic story is as follows : Your gal is dead. You want her back. Godlike voices tell you to destroy big baddies. You go out and kill them. Plot isn't extremely developed, but that is not what this game is about. It is about the bosses. The Collossi. HUGH baddies, that require strategy to defeat. Each new victory is a real accomplishment, and you can't wait to get to the next. One of the best titles in my collection, and it should be in yours, too.

One of the best games this generation
5 Star Review   By member bauerpower - Jan 24, 2006

Strengths: Original game, great battles, very epic, amazing soundtrack score, massive environments, small load times, lots of extras

Weakness: Unconventional game design may annoy gamers

Shadow of the Colossus is developed by the same team that did ICO and like ICO, it's one of the games that can deliver a great game with emotion. The game is very original and different as it only contains bosses. There's no enemies to fight other than the 16 boss battles you will be facing in the game. THe world that you travel is massive and immersive and it's done with no load times, similiar to GTA San Andreas. Unlike ICO, Shadow of the Colossus sports one of the most amazing game soundtracks ever, utilizing a real ochrestal with an amazing epic and dynamic score. The game can be a bit short but there are extras like time attack to give it some replayability. The story is a bit tied to ICO, so play ICO before playing SotC to get the full effect. This game is a MUST for anyone with a PS2 and wishes to play something original. This is one of my favorite games of 2005 and will be one of the top games for this generation.

Shadow of the Colossus
5 Star Review   By member galvatron2k1 - Jan 10, 2006

Strengths: Game play, storyline, graphics, sound

Shadow of the Colossus is one of my favorite games to date. In this game, you play as a hero that is trying to revive a girl. In a distant land, there is a legend where people can be revived and so the hero takes the girl to this place. However, in order to revive the girl, the hero must travel in this distant land and destroy many giants (Colossi). The game play is fantastic. Trying to take out a Colossus in itself is a puzzle. Not many hints are given, so you must figure out the right course of action to take. And even when you do figure out how to destroy it, performing the task is not a small feat. The graphics are also very good for a PS2 game. The environments and horizon are well done and the giant Colossi are amazing. These creatures are huge. Also, you control a horse during the course of the game and the animations of the horse are also very true to real life, impressive indeed. The sound effects in the game are also very good. Listening to the horse’s hooves beating against the ground and listening to a Colossus fall to the ground in defeat are some of the best effects I have heard all year. Overall, a must have purchase! Buy it now.

another Ico
5 Star Review   By member re4 - Dec 24, 2005

Strengths: great graphics, amasing sounds

Weakness: weak story line

Shadow of the colossus (sc) is a amasing video game. It has amasing graphics, and amasing sound. The game is pretty much art. You might find your self looking at the visuals instead of traking down the colossi. If you like action constant fighting this game is not for you, but if you like puzzles this is your kind of game. If you like puzzle games like I strongly suggest you play this game.

Strengths: graphics are amazing

The beauty of this game just amazes you. The sound is so great also. Although I just got this game, I find it so much fun. Such a unique game where battling bosses is the only goal. I highly recomend it to any library.

3 Star Review   By member georgeb3 - Dec 16, 2005

Strengths: Amazing Graphics

Weakness: Weak Storyline, Bogus Replay Value.

This game at first looked really cool to me, but then i started playing it. First thing i noticed is the main character is a boy but he sounds like a girl! Second I realized that after i beat it i wouldnt have anything to go back to. I played the game for about 4 hours, and then sold it back to Gamestop.

This game is BIG.
4 Star Review   By member Admiral_Ackbar - Dec 14, 2005

Strengths: Great visuals, music and atmosphere. GIGANTIC battles. Can pick up and play.

Weakness: Story seems weak.

Shadow of the Colossus is like playign a series of boss battles over and over. You have to combat these gigantic colossi which seems an impossible task. However, each colossus has a weak spot somewhere on their body. And it's up to you to figure out a way to reach that weak spiot and inflict damage. The whole game revolves around this mission, and traveling to the colossi and across the land is breathtaking. the characters, horses, colossi are so responsive and realistic in their motion that it's amazing. And this is teh strength and almost sole focus of the game. If their is a downside, the focus is so intense that everythign else seems tertiery, including the story. also, once you beat the colossi, I didn't find much replay value and found the game shortish. But you HAVE to play this game at least once.

BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 Star Review   By member Rex678 - Dec 12, 2005

Strengths: Good graphics, THAT IS ALL!!!!!!

Weakness: Only being able to do one thing and awful camera.

This game is very boring, when I played it, I cried, all you do is get on your horse, track down 14 or 15 huge bosses, when you do, fight it, kill it, repeat that 14 or 15 times and the game ends. There are no other monsters that try to stop you on your way to fight the big monsters, if they had put at least that, I would love this game, but the game isn't all bad, the bosses are pretty hard to take down, and they are entertaining, so, I say its worth to rent.

Colossal Game.
5 Star Review   By member DirtyPudding - Dec 11, 2005

Strengths: One of the greatest gaming experiences ever created.

Weakness: The camera can be annoying at times.

From the makers of Ico comes Shadow of the Colossus. This is a one of a kind gaming experience that anyone who likes video games should play. The graphics, sound, gameplay are all incredible. The boss battles are some of the greatest in video game history. The only problem I had with the game was the camera would act crazy while riding on the horse sometimes. Other than that, this game is simply one of the best games to come out in awhile and it is definitely PS2 Game of the Year for 2005. Just buy it! A++

Truly one of this years most innovative titles.
5 Star Review   By member sjohnatron - Oct 24, 2005

Strengths: What stood out most in this game was the breath taking visuals, the audio in the game was outstanding, and the sence of accomplishment you get after defeating the Collosi makes this game outstanding.

Weakness: Though the emotions of the characters plays out quite well, and you become attached to them throughout the game, the lack of story behind them tended to bother me the most.

Shadow of the Collosus, is easily one of my most favorite games of all time. Never before have I been dumbstruck by the sheer beauty of a game. The landscapes are beautifully renderd, and provide hours or exploration, just to get the "perfect view." I spent hours at a time just exploring the terrain, and discovering new territories. The audio in the game is in my opinion, unmatched. The music seems to express the feelings, and emotions of the characters accurately. From the very start, the game captures you, through it's visuals, and lack of story. Without specific guidlines as to where the main character comes from, and who he is trying to rescue, it leaves the mind to fell in the blanks. Making the main character more personalized. With nothing more than a bow & arrow, magic sword, and loyal steed, you set out on a journey to concour masive beasts whose origin remains unknown. This is what attracted me about the game, and made it such fun to play. I recomend this game to anyone who conciders themself a true "gamer."
