Sonic Mega Collection Plus
4 Star Review  GameSpy - Nov 1, 2004

As Sega would have us believe, its PS2 compilation of 13 old-school Sonic games is no mere Sonic Collection. Oh, no. As you might remember, last year's GameCube compilation was entitled Sonic Mega Collection -- and that doesn't even do justice to the new one's grandness. In fact, the addition of the Sonic Game Gear titles makes this package nothing less than a Sonic Mega Collection PLUS!

Sonic Mega Collection Plus
4 Star Review  IGN.com - Nov 3, 2004

Sonic Mega Collection Plus is perhaps one of the best compilations you could ask for. At a mere $20, gamers can enjoy 20 classic games. The majority of these games features Sega's icon, Sonic, though a few other Genesis gems are included to round out the deal. The youthful blue hedgehog was once more recognizable than Mickey Mouse and though Sonic isn't quite as hip these days, he's still one of video game's most significant icons. This isn't a collection of mediocre old school games, this is a collection of every pre-Saturn sonic title. That's a heavy load of goodness any fan should be excited about.

Nostalgic for old 2d Sonic? Here's your answer
4 Star Review   By member rpnguyen - Jul 22, 2008

Strengths: Great value for this collection of solid Sonic games, extra features thrown in

Weakness: Graphics are dated

The 2D sonic games are still better than any 3D sonic game. The sense of speed as well as the physics still give Sonic a unique place in 2D platforming. The sheer size of the collection is also nothing to sneeze at. You can unlock some more games as you play, including non-sonic games thrown in as a bonus. One problem is that the graphics are VERY dated and you'll see this stick out on the Game Gear games because they were made to play on a small screen. If you have a bigger TV (32"+) I'd recommend trying to find a smaller TV to play on.

A Bundle of Classics
4 Star Review   By member iamamoogle - Feb 26, 2008

Strengths: 13 Sonic Games, 5 Additional SEGA Classics, Added ability to save, Extras are a cool added bonus

Weakness: Sound issues with some games, Some extras seem out of place

While there isn't anything technically new in this collection, having never grown up with a SEGA Genesis there was plenty of fun to be had. The gameplay of the majority of the games is pretty much just old school fun. The massive amount of games is almost reason enough to own. There are a total of 7 Genesis and 6 Game Gear Sonic titles, 5 unlockable Genesis games, and the ability to play Sonic 2 and 3 with Knuckles (As if you had Sonic 2 or 3 plugged into the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge). There are a lot of extras, which is always nice, but some seem out of place: there are videos for Sonic CD which isn't on the collection but on Sonic Gems Collection.

Cool Blue
4 Star Review   By member Bullettime - Sep 23, 2007

Strengths: A hefty dose of Sonic

Weakness: Where's Sonic CD?!

Well, if you can somehow overlook the exclusion of the great Sonic CD, this is perhaps the ultimate Sonic collection. It's even better than the original Sonic collection that first appeared on the GameCube. The emulation of the Sonic games is a little spotty in places, but it will probably only bother the hardest of hardcore Sonic fans. Otherwise, this is an awesome collection of Sonic games, supplemented by some great extras.

The original with enhanced PS2 graphics
3 Star Review   By member furstbart - Sep 13, 2007

Strengths: Classic Sega Sonic games in one. Multi player action, with lots of mini party games for group play.

Weakness: Short levels. Very kid oriented. Original graphics; nothing new.

Overall, if you ever played Sonic games you know what to expect. Same games different system. The best part is that they are all in one. If you loved them then, you'll love them now. It is a fun change to the modern gruesome/action games.
