Description
That fire breathing purple dragon SPYRO is back in Sierra Entertainment and Amaze Entertainment THE LEGEND OF SPYRO: A NEW BEGINNING for the DS. This new game in the series serves as a prequel of sorts, examining Spyro's life as a young dragon, and focuses more on combat and less on the platforming aspects. Players can also use the DS touch screen controls to move Spyro and attack enemies. The game begins with Spyro hatching out of an egg and being raised by dragonflies. He has no idea that he's a dragon, but once Spyro discovers this, he will have access to many of his dragon talents, including fire breathing and flying. He will need all of these abilities to take down the evil dragon Cinder, who is plotting to take over the world. Spyro's breath attack can be modified with elemental powers, and each of these four elements has three different attacks that Spyro can access once he collects enough gems. Each attack has its own uses. In addition to elemental blasts, Spyro also has access to fury moves that damage all enemies on the screen. The flying levels work just like aerial shooters, with Spyro blasting his way through Cinder's flying forces while dodging and spiraling out of the way of incoming blasts. These break up the combat missions and, together, turn THE LEGEND OF SPYRO: A NEW BEGINNING into a great game that explores Spyro's past and turns him into the dragon hero everyone loves.

The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning
3.5 Star Review  GameZone - Nov 13, 2006

Just like TV shows, video games series have a tendency to "jump the shark" at some point. One can only collect so many coins, rings, fruits, etc. before going just a teeny bit insane. The folks behind the Spyro the Dragon series seem to have noticed that their last few efforts haven't been all that stellar compared to the first few Spyro titles so they went back to the drawing board. They came back with a somewhat darker retelling of the Spyro saga that prominently features voice work by high profile stars such as Elijah Wood and David Spade. Is this new approach enough to woo jilted fans? Let's find out.
