The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
4.5 Star Review  GameZone - Oct 5, 2007

Is there anything a stylus can’t do? Perhaps the question should be rephrased: is there anything it shouldn’t do? Developers have wrestled with that thought since before the Nintendo DS shipped in 2004. The answer isn’t easy. If done incorrectly in either case, gamers will think the developer took the “easy way out” by using the traditional D-pad controls or by using the touch screen as nothing more than a gimmick to increase sales. I had visions of what a stylus-controlled Mario would be like. But NEW Super Mario Bros. wasn’t a DS experiment.

Phantom Hourglass
4 Star Review   By member botticus - Jan 6, 2008

Strengths: Stylus controls work, graphics fit the system

Weakness: While they work, there are times buttons would be preferable to the stylus controls.

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is a direct sequel to Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker on the GameCube. Using the same cel-shaded graphic style, little is lost in the transition from console to handheld. The game is controlled exclusively with the stylus, which works fine in most cases (though I had some trouble executing a roll). At times you'd probably wish you had use of buttons, but you can live without. While not as strong an entry as the recent Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass presents another solid entry in the Zelda series.

Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass
5 Star Review   By member mojave - Jan 1, 2008

Strengths: Classic Zelda gameplay finally on the DS with new touch-screen elements

There is one sure thing in video games: if Nintendo releases a Zelda game for any of its major platforms it is going to be a solid title. The same holds for the DS's first Zelda game, Phantom Hourglass. And as usual, they have worked in a small twist to the gameplay. This time the twist is that the game is controlled entirely with the touch screen (no D-pad movement allowed!). While that may bother some people, Nintendo has nailed the control here and it works wonderfully once you get used to it. The game is set in the world (and art style) of the Gamecube classic Wind Waker. The cel-shaded cartoon stlye of that game works very well on the DS's more limited hardware so that was a very good choice indeed (vs the style of the more realistic-looking Twilight Princess). The game also features some great boss fights that make good use of the unique DS hardware. All in all, this is a solid entry in the Zelda series and one that any Zelda fan should already have by now! It is also, perhaps, a bit more casual and easy than some of the other Zelda games, so it is a good entry point for beginners to the series.

Best title out there for the Nintendo DS!
5 Star Review   By member tailwagger - Dec 15, 2007

Strengths: Very novel use of the stylus making it a one of a kind game!

I have been a Zelda from the days of the original NES version, so I had to get this when it came out. After starting to play it, I couldn't put it down. Very clever puzzles and a multitude of weapons that uses the stylus in a novel manner. The boomerang is lots of fun to use not to mention the grappling hook. The designers really put lots of time into designing it for the puzzles and look of the game. I am almost done with game, but had to go on a little self imposed hiatus due to the holidays and time spent shopping and stuff. Get this game. You won't be disappointed and definitely a great addition to the Zelda universe.

Zelda DS
4 Star Review   By member bob330i - Dec 12, 2007

Strengths: gameplay, stylus controls

Weakness: graphics (contrary to other reviewers)

I’m really enjoying Zelda so far. The intro is a bit long winded and the graphics are so-so (there are better DS graphics out there), but the gameplay makes up for those shortcomings. The controls are pretty quick to learn as everything you do (attack, move, throw, etc.) are controlled by the stylus. I think it all works well once you get the hang of it. The toughest thing so far is to remember how to roll which will come in handy as you get further into the story. There is quite a bit of variety as it has ship navigation, RPG elements and puzzles to keep it going.

You can't pass up a Zelda GAME!
5 Star Review   By member sinofsky - Nov 28, 2007

Strengths: Really nice integration of all the different aspects of the DS, especially how you move, fight, and do everything with the stylus and rarely use the regular controls...

Weakness: Aimed more at kids so it seems more playful... however even I got stumped on some of the simplest things... Hint to blow out the candles, you blow on the DS mic :-P Oh and rolling is near impossible.

Really nice integration of all the different aspects of the DS, especially how you move, fight, and do everything with the stylus and rarely use the regular controls... I still can't believe I got stumped with things as simple as blowing out the candles by blowing into the mic! Have to give the development team major KUDOS on creating a solid and unique new game and Zelda Adventure. I wish it lasted longer, and I wish things were a bit easier to find but that is what gives it replay value!

Strengths: *Stylus Controls *Graphics/Art Style *Story

If you don't have a DS, buy one and buy this game; plain and simple. This is easily the best game on the system and is a runner for game of the year. Having played all the Zelda games, I consider this in the top 3.

5 Star Review   By member Admiral_Ackbar - Nov 28, 2007

Strengths: Everything.

Phantom Hourglass is an excellent, excellent zelda game. it starts as the end of wind walker and has the same graphical style and setting. It looks fantastic and has a great stsetting and quest. However, the innovative controls really take the cake. The DS touch screen is fantastic in this game and an integral part of the control. But it!

Another Fantastic Zelda Title
5 Star Review   By member SpazX - Nov 24, 2007

Strengths: It's Zelda! Great puzzles, good action, great new stylus controls

Weakness: Easier than other Zelda games, but that could be a plus for some people

I was skeptical about this game when I found out it was going to be made to be controlled completely with the stylus. I never thought Zelda could be as good without using any buttons, but I was wrong. It may not be perfect, but the stylus controls work out great. You attack enemies by making a stroke with the stylus to slash your sword, you draw a circle around link to do the spin attack, draw a path for the boomerang, etc. and nothing feels hard to control. The feature where you can draw on your map to mark places that you need to go or where things are is a great addition to Zelda and makes the game that much more immersive. Probably as a consequence of using stylus controls, the game is made a little easier than other Zelda games. Zelda has never been a really hard game (at least since the NES), but this one is the easiest I've played. I don't think that really matters too much since it's still long and a lot of fun, but some people might not like that it's easier. Overall I think that it's a great game and any Zelda fan will love it and anybody who thinks they might enjoy it should definitely give it a try.

Must Have DS Title!
5 Star Review   By member sipkristal - Nov 21, 2007

Strengths: Wind Waker graphics, great use of DS capabilities

Weakness: a little too easy

If you\\\'re a Zelda fan, this game is a must-have! Actually, if you own a DS, this game is a must-have! The game is a throwback to the classic Zelda games but with beautiful Wind Waker graphics! My only complaint is that the game was a little too easy. Other than that, I highly recommend this game to anyone!

The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass (DS)
5 Star Review   By member cotebryan - Nov 19, 2007

Strengths: (1) The new and unique controls and gameplay is a surprising and a welcome new direction (2) Great graphics (3) Many moments of ingenuity that only Nintendo can create

Weakness: (1) None

The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass (DS) stands as one of the best Zelda adventures, which is obviously a very bold statement. I was one of the fans who welcomed the new direction (graphic-wise) that Wind Waker (for Gamecube) took and this style is surprisingly well reproduced on the DS. Moreover, the touchscreen control is a wonderful new way to play the game and makes many elements of the Zelda formula new and interesting again. For instance, even though many items that are staples in the Zelda universe make an unsurprising return, everything about the gameplay and control has changed which makes using them a new experience again. The core game is excellent, providing a lengthy and engrossing adventure with top-of-the-line presentation and polish. There are also plenty of peripheral quests to keep you busy playing once you have completed the story. The option to play a multiplayer mini game and trade ship parts with friends is welcomed as well.

Zelda: Canvas Curse
5 Star Review   By member yakkotank - Nov 7, 2007

Strengths: Great new control scheme, classic gameplay

Weakness: Some backtracking and fetch quests

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is an amazing game. The graphics are better than anything on the DS, the stylus only control scheme is excellent, and the gameplay itself is classic Zelda. Lots of extra items and even some Wifi play make this one of the must-have titles for the DS.

Classic Zelda Fun
5 Star Review   By member Fompe - Oct 25, 2007

Strengths: Complete use of DS Capabilities; Beautiful Graphics; Classic Zelda Fun

Weakness: A bit easy for Zelda Veterans

Nintendo delivers yet another great Zelda game that is sure to be as memorable as ever. Do not be daunted by having to use the stylus as the main form of control as there is almost no learning curve; indeed, I soon applauded the developers for their decision as it created such innovative and fun possibilities. As to be expected, the good old Zelda formula of dungeon questing, treasure hunting, and puzzle solving is present, providing hours of fun gameplay. Although I have to say the game is a bit easy, I have still poured many many hours into the game doing all the various fun side quests and collecting treasures. And as a completely new Zelda addition, there is a pretty fun multiplayer game that can be played globally over Nintendo's WiFi! Bottom line: Even if you never played a Zelda game before (shame on you!), if you own a DS, there is really no reason you shouldn't get this game.

A Phantom Arises
4 Star Review   By member aminaha - Oct 20, 2007

Strengths: Entertaining game, fun puzzles, touch controp makes aiming very precise. unlimited wallet, nice dungeons design.

Weakness: touch control sometimes falters, near impossible to perform a roll

Phantom Hourglass serves as a great follow up to the Windwaker. Sailing is now a fun diversion instead of the tedious chore it was in Windwaker. Ability to customize your ship to the desired appearance is a definite plus.

Another Classic in the Series
5 Star Review   By member mike_n_ike - Oct 20, 2007

Strengths: Excellent gameplay that is characteristic of the Zelda franchise. Beautiful art style. Innovative integration of the touch screen for puzzles and weapon usage.

Weakness: Use of the touch screen for moving and navigation takes some time to get used to.

Phantom hourglass is the latest Zelda game to come out, and it has definitely been worth the wait. This is the best portable Zelda game since link's awakening on the original game boy. The game uses a beautiful art style, and the gameplay can't be beat. The touch screen introduces a new innovative method of solving puzzles, and the weapon controls just feel better when using the touch screen to control them. Overall, this is simply an essential purchase for anyone's game collection.

Best game for the DS
5 Star Review   By member tommersyip - Oct 17, 2007

Strengths: Zelda on the DS! Notepad function is actually very useful.

Weakness: Game could be longer

Even though it is hard to believe, your console really isn't a Nintendo console until you have a great Zelda game for it. I think the best think about this game is the notepad function on the map. Great use of teh DS stylus. Buy this game - its just like the SNES Zelda but better.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
5 Star Review   By member docmav - Oct 15, 2007

Strengths: Finally Zelda comes in the DS! Another fantastic Zelda game.

Weakness: NONE. Game is played entirely through the use of your stylus. Some people may not find it responsive.

My first Zelda game was on the NES, and boy have we come a long way. Zelda: PH has graphics simliar to Wind Walker. Lots of puzzles to open trap doors, treasure chests, and doors. I've put in about 10 hours in this game so far and find it very entertaining. Haven't come across 2 of the same puzzles yet. Soundtrack for the game is well done. Movement and all actions are performed with the stylus. Zelda: PH is a MUST BUY for all DS/DS Lite owners and it's grea tfor ALL ages.

Fantastic Phantom!
5 Star Review   By member renhoek444 - Oct 15, 2007

Strengths: Does a great job employing all of the unique control aspects of the DS from the touch screen variations to the microphone. The graphics are simply stunning.

Weakness: Some controls are tough to execute like tumblesaults. The ship canon is a little too sensitive too.

I have played many Zelda titles, but this one is by far the most enjoyable. The tasks are interesting, and there are so many hidden "bonuses" to find along the way. Some of the repetition in the dungeons can get tedious, but overall the game is nothing short of the best DS title if you like RPGs.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
5 Star Review   By member Tricky02 - Oct 13, 2007

Strengths: Easy to control and beautiful 3D graphics on the Nintendo DS

Weakness: I have not found any weaknesses.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is the first Zelda game to hit the Nintendo DS system. The good news is that it was well worth the wait. Controlling Link is done by using the stylus. Solving each dungeon is a floor-by-floor affair, with puzzles rarely reaching past one level. Despite that, each dungeon is built wonderfully. Multiplayer adds some great casual fun to the game. Most dungeons in single-player are guarded by invincible "phantoms," clinking ghost-knights. Their only weakness is that they can't enter certain "safe zones" on the map, or see Link once he enters them. In multiplayer, one person takes the part of Link, attempting to grab tri-force pieces and throw them to his base area, while the other player takes on the role of a force of phantoms, tracing out their paths on an overhead-view map while looking out through one of their eyes on the top screen. There aren't many maps, and only the one game mode, but it's a fun mode and you can play it locally, wirelessly or even with one cartridge. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass a must-play for any DS owner.

Great Addition to the Zelda Series!
5 Star Review   By member sephiroth61787 - Oct 9, 2007

Strengths: -Beautiful Graphics -Engaging Gameplay -Awesome Boss Battles -DS Capabilities create new ways of solving old puzzles

Weakness: -Control relies completely on the stylus...which can become a pain

This game is set directly after the evens of the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (for the Nintendo Gamecube), but you do not need to play that game to understand what is going on. Essentially, a Ghost Ship captures your friend and you have to go rescue her. Graphics are similar to that of it's predecessor, but the amazing feat is that it's being done on a handheld instead of a home console! Colors are bright which makes finding objects that much easier. Like every other Zelda game, the gameplay focuses on dungeon exploration. This game feels no different than any other in the series, but at the same time, puzzles are solved in new ways. For example, if there is a candle in front of you, you can blow it out by blowing into the microphone on the DS! Innovative puzzles like this encourage you to use your brain. Boss battles are also fun. They are not terribly hard to figure out, but they are somewhat difficult to defeat. The one area where this game can become a pain is control. Everything you do is controlled with the stylus. When you want to attack the enemy, you tap the enemy and Link attacks. The problem with this is that you have to be rather close to the enemy and sometimes, the hit doesn't register. It can become a nuisance, but this doesn't happen very often thankfully. All in all, a welcome and excellent addition to the Zelda franchise. Highly Recommended. It's games like this that make the DS an amazing gaming console.

Absolute must-play title for all DS owners
5 Star Review   By member mkernan - Oct 3, 2007

Strengths: Innovative touch-based controls, excellent graphics for the DS, familiar core Zelda mechanics, excellent sound

Weakness: lack of optional d-pad controls

Without going any further, I can tell you from the start that the new Zelda game for the DS is an absolute must-play title. Even if you've never played a Zelda game in your life, you can have a great time with this one. The story unfolds shortly after the events of the Wind Waker and the graphic style closely mimics the Gamecube game as well. There were mixed opinions of the cel-shaded graphics of Wind Waker, but here on the DS it absolutely works. I was a bit hesitant about the touch-based controls when I first read about them but it is really a joy to play this way. Link is controlled by simply touching the screen where you want him to run or walk to. Sword slashes are done by swiping a line across and spin attacks handled by quickly drawing a circle around him. Certain things like making Link roll are a little akward, but overall it just feels at home on the DS. This really is a show-off piece for the DS, as it uses the systems abilities to its best. You can blow into the microphone to put out candles, scribble notes on your map, and even draw the path you want the boomerang to take. I can't comment on the length of the game, as I've only played it for a couple of hours so far, but I've heard that its somewhat shorter and a little easier than previous Zelda titles. With Nintendo's recent push into the casual gaming market, this comes as no surprise. In the end, this game is just an absolute joy to play for gamers of all skill levels. Go out and buy or rent it today!

Phantom hour glass
5 Star Review

Strengths: Awsome gameplay, and great music.

Weakness: Too short

This game is the best Zelda yet! I am close to completing it too soon though. What a shame. It is one of the finest games out their. In fact, it's my favorite, second to resident evil 4.

wind waker flash backs
5 Star Review   By member antonio664 - Aug 19, 2007

Strengths: great ussuge of the stylis. perfect cell shading grapics! new story line

Weakness: sometimes gameplay gets very repetitive

If u have ever played a zelda game then you know the drill! Link is off on another adventure to save the princess and defeat ganondorf, right? Wrong! brand new storyline here! This game picks up right after the adventure of wind waker! don't expet to fight ganondorf in this game but be ready for other great levels of fun dudes! the game increasingly gets more repetitive and boring but the stylus kicks butt and makes the game a winner, which really brings the fun into long battles! buy it, if you're ready for a refreshed zelda game to-go!
