Ridge Racer (DS)
3 Star Review   By member shrike424242 - Nov 9, 2005

Strengths: Stylus control, wireless multiplayer

Weakness: Passable graphics

Ridge Racer for the DS is a port of the Ridge Racer game for the N64. It's updated with stylus control, which is both enjoyable and frustrating, though the graphics, which look good for the DS, aren't great. It allows for multiplayer over wireless, which is a nice touch and adds some replay value. Racing fans should at least give this one a look.

Ridge Racer DS
3 Star Review   By member mick16 - Aug 22, 2005

Strengths: Best Racer for DS

Weakness: Graphics, Touch screen is useless

Ridge Racer for the DS is a fun driving game for the DS. I picked it up for $10 at Circuit City a couple of months ago and for that price, it is a decent value. I also own the game for the PSP and that is the preferred platform if you have both. The drifting system takes a while to get used to, but once you do the game provides a lot of fun. Considering this is pretty much the only driving game out there for the DS, you need to live with the fact that its a port of the N64 game with mediocre graphics to enjoy the game. If you can get the game for $10 or less, definitely pick it up.

A Racing Game
3 Star Review   By member yakkotank - Aug 8, 2005

Strengths: Pretty graphics, fun gameplay for racing fans.

Weakness: Silly physics, only four cars can be on-screen at one time..

I'm not a racing game fan by any stretch of the imagination, limiting my play in the genre to Mario Kart. Ridge Racer DS, though, is a fun but flawed game. Three different control schemes keep things interesting, and there's a decent amount of depth here. But it's still only a racing game.

Ridge Racer DS a decent but dated portable racer
3 Star Review   By member juice5000 - Jul 17, 2005

Strengths: The graphics are surprisingly good. The use of the stylus as an added steering controller. Long Grand Prix mode.

Weakness: Basically a port of Ridge Racer 64. Not alot of track variety. Car handling rough.

Since it's early in the Nintendo DS lifespan, a variety of titles just have not come out yet. Because of this and the budget pricing at some retial locations for Ride Racer DS, it can be looked at as a way to pad your DS collection before more poplur games hit later this year. This was a top racing title on the N64 and PS1, and as ports go isn't bad as a port but that's as far as my nostaligia goes. The touch screen takes getting used to. I haven't played the wireless function yet but it's at least nice that it's available for extending the life of the game. Bottom line: the game is fun to a point, can get much harder later in the game, the controls mostly suck but can be overcome with practice. If you pay anymore than $15 for the game I couln't reccommend it. Under $15? Go for it. There aren't many racers on the DS yet and your saved $$$ can be used for a better port such as Mario 64.

Ridge Racer - Decent but not spectacular
3 Star Review   By member jenbowie - Jul 11, 2005

Strengths: Nice graphics and decent gameplay

Weakness: Little replay value

This game is fun...not quite revolutionary, but a decent little game. Nice touch screen use, and some options for customization, but not particularly exciting in terms of action. Unfortunately, there is not much replay value. This game is a nice diversion, particularly if you can get it on sale, but not as great as it could be.

Ridge Racer now with touch screen action!
4 Star Review   By member FOnewearl - Jul 10, 2005

Strengths: Multiplay with up to 6 DS systems

Weakness: AI is tough on the computer racers

Ridge Racer DS is basically the N64 version of Ridge Racer ported to the Nintendo DS with some of the systems features brought into the gameplay. The major thing for the control is that you can use the touch screen to steer your car or the D-pad. While the touch screen is somewhat of a learning curve it's pretty good once you get used to it, although an analog stick is better suited for racing games overall the touchscreen is a nice subtitute without an analog stick present on the Nintendo DS. The AI can be very unforgiving also as it can be tough to beat the computer racers on the single player mode and it gets extremely rough later on in the game since you have to get first place in order to advance to the next race. The one thing that is the best new feature to Ridge Racer DS over the N64 version is the wireless multiplayer. You can race with up to 6 players even if only one of them has a Ridge Racer game the only drawback is that the gameless DS systems will not have any music or an anouncer but that's a pretty small price to pay for wireless multiplay without having a copy of the game in question. I would recommend Ridge Racer to anyone looking for an arcade racing game on the DS ASAP especially if they have friends with DS systems to race against

Bad control, hard to enjoy.
2 Star Review   By member mkelehan - Jul 8, 2005

Strengths: A good port of the N64 original.

Weakness: No analog control hurts, bad.

This is another case of a game being hurt by the system it's on. I love the DS, and games that are made from the ground up to use the touch screen are plenty of fun. But, using the screen to do things that are better suited for an analog stick, like steering a car, is a disaster. You can play with the D-pad, but it's just not much fun.

2 Star Review   By member kida1114 - Jul 7, 2005

Strengths: Unique touch steering Ridge Racer handheld game! Easy pick-up and playability

Weakness: Touchy handiling (no pun intended) Graphics arent too great Annoying anouncer

While this game could have had alot to offer, if the developors hadnt rushed it. The game feels thrown together. I like the idea of the touch steering but it feels like they didnt tweak it enough for a good response. I recomend this game if you can get it cheap, otherwise stay away.

3 Star Review   By member sabin23 - Jul 5, 2005

Strengths: It's a portable Ridge Racer with the same great drift physics.

Weakness: Not a lot of tracks, weak graphics, touch screen not utilized well.

Namco loves prepping the Ridge Racer series for a new system's launch. The DS was graced with a version of Ridge Racer but while it's fun, the DS version is ultimately flawed. It's basically a port of the N64 game that we saw many years ago. The same old crazy drift physics are still intact. Visually, the game is very unappealing as the graphics are incredibly pixelated and ugly - this looks worse then a first generation Playstation One game (as an aside, the PSP version of Ridge Racer looks phenomenal). Perhaps the most disappointing aspect is that the game doesn't utilize the touch screen very well. Using the touch screen to steer is great in concept but it's not very precise or accurate. You might as well stick with the default D-pad. The game doesn't have a ton of replay value due to the limited number of tracks and courses. In spite of the flaws, the novelty of having a portable Ridge Racer might be enough for fans of Namco's long standing series.

4 Star Review   By member NextGenXbox - Jul 5, 2005

Strengths: Awesome graphics for the DS. We all know the DS isn't as powerful as the PSP, but it can hold its own quite well. Namco did a great job on porting this N64 game to the DS. Smooth framerate, gameplay!

Weakness: Levels are a bit repetitive. Not much to do besides, well, race. Some mini games would have been cool. Announcer it very annoying.... "YOU DID IT, YOU'RE THE CHAMPION!" after every 1st place finish.

Overall, I really enjoyed Ridge Racer for the Nintendo DS. Sure it isn't perfect, but it is fun. And that is what many games of today are missing, the all-important fun factor. You don't need guns and gore to have a good time in a game. All you need is a good racing game on the go. Nice graphics and responsive control make Ridge Racer definitely worth the price of admission!

Strengths: Concept using Stylus to steer.

Weakness: Garphics but its DS worthy

Racing is racing, and racing is fun. It would have been an awesome game IF they didn't give rights to PSP to release a version. Oh well, its still a good concept.

This is a fun racer, not too large of a game, but it's easily something you could pick up and play. If you already have a racing game, you probably won't care to get this one, but it's still good on the go. Ridge Racer has always been a good series.

Strengths: A DS racing game. Good graphics for the DS. Fast paced.

Weakness: Port of an N64 game. Somehow looks WORSE than the N64 original. Touch screen steering is awful.

Don't be fooled by Ridge Racer DS, it's really a port of the competent but underwhelming Ridge Racer 64. Sporting sharp graphics, a bunch of cars and tracks, and single cart Wi-Fi, it has decent longetivity. However, the touch screen controls are useless, and the dpad controls are iffy. Stick to Need for Speed Underground

Strengths: It's for the Nintendo DS

Weakness: Gameplay

This game is only good because of the Nintendo DS system. It is a great system, and everyone I know likes it a lot. This game however isn't the best. The graphics are shaky, and the gameplay is just boring. I wouldn't recommend buying this one without knowing exactly what it was first. However the controls are fun because of the stylus.

Strengths: A good arcade racing game for the Nintendo DS! Decent graphic for the DS hardware! Inovative controls!

Weakness: I bit weak on tracks and different racing modes!

This game is the same exact port from the Ridge Racer 64 for Nintendo 64, so don't expect too much of a diffence, beside for the different controls from the touch screen. Pros: Great Game for the money (Picked this up for $10) Graphic is Nice, but kinda edgey... show what the DS can do. Fun multiplayer gameply! I think the touch screen control is pretty cool. The wonderful Ridge racer soundtrack we all love. Cons: Needs more racing modes option, controls is a tad lose on the touch screen mode, need more race tracks. Overall: 3 OUTTA 5 STARS

Strengths: the graphics are okay. One of two ds racing games out right now.

Weakness: There's not many of options. All you do is race and the only options for the cars are to change its color.

If you could get it under 12 dollars get it. I've been playing it all day and I am satisfied, but there are some things the developers could have done better. There's not much to do, but to race there's not even a storyline. If you have a PSP get the PSP version instead. The only reason I bought this game was because I came accross it cheap and to build up my DS game libray.

Strengths: Good Graphics

Weakness: Very limited on what you can do

I would suggest to get the PSP version of Ridge Racer instead of this. A good factor in this game is the graphics of it. It has amazing graphics, but it lacks the gameplay that it needs to replay the game over and over. The way the sylus works is unique, but I wouldn't recommend this game to people who are looking for a very good arcade racer. But all in all, this is the best racing game on the DS.

Strengths: Easy controls, fun music, and the tracks are really fun.

Weakness: Short tracks, graphics aren't the greatest, and no enough cars.

I got this game because I played the old version on Playstation 1 and I loved it then and I love it now. I wouldn't pay full price for it though. It is a fun game, but there are better ones out there.

3 Star Review   By member mathman642 - Jul 3, 2005

Strengths: Good drift driving game. Graphics look better when in motion and on the DS screen.

Weakness: Bad touchscreen controls. Lack of rear view mirror to see incoming cars.

I've got this game when it first came out for the DS, ended up losing it and getting it again for cheap. Its cheap for a reason, compared with other driving games available it is too simple and won't keep you entertained for long. Unless you are like me who plays games once in a while and only for less than an hour, this will get boring quick. This game feels like most ridge racer games, arcadey and not a simulator like GT. But then it should since it's supposed to be a port of the N64 version. I happen to have the PSP version but I don't bring my PSP everywhere I go, so this can substitute when I want a racing fix. I'd recommend it but only if you find it cheap (< $10).

3 Star Review   By member wleitz - Jul 3, 2005

Strengths: Smooth graphics Driving control

Weakness: Rather bland design Does not use the full use of the DS's capablilites

Ridge Racer DS is a decent racing game for the DS that is based on the game Ridge Racer 64 released a few years back on the N64. Not much has changed in both games and the cars handle mostly the same on the same tracks. A more arcadey take on racing than even other Ridge Racer games, it is still a decent game for some quick gaming sessions. The graphics are nice and smooth and the cars handle decently. You can either use the d-pad or the touch screen for control, but without friction or resistance it is harder to master. Overall, a good game that could have been better with more additions.

4 Star Review   By member TJordan522 - Jul 3, 2005

Strengths: Good graphics, arcade racing fun

After purchasing Ridge Racer for $9.99 at the Circuit City Sale, my brother and I took it home for some multiplayer DS action. Right out of the box, Ridge Racer impresses with its ability for 6 player wireless multiplayer with only one game cartridge. This was a deciding factor in purchasing Ridge Racer as opposed to another racing game such as Need For Speed, as my brother and I both own DSs and we did not want to have to buy two games to play together. The actual gameplay is also very impressive. We enjoyed many action packed, fun arcade races with four AI cars racing in addition to ourselves. Overall, I am very impressed with Ridge Racer DS so far and I look forward to playing it even more.

Strengths: Decent graphics, best racer on the DS

Weakness: Exact port of Ridge Racer 64, dosen't really add anything new to the genre. Stylus control isn't too good, either.

This is a decent first generation game for the Nintendo DS... it's something that's worth getting at 9.99, but I probably wouldn't pay more than that. It's fun for awhile, and the "secret" bonus cars are pretty nice.

If you have a PSP I sugfgest spending the extra $10 and getting a far superior version, otherwise this IS the best racer on DS.

Strengths: Graphics are good. You can switch between 1st and 3rd person.

Weakness: Limited choices.

I feel this racer is too limited. In quick race you cannot choose your car. Then in Single player, you only have a choice of 4 cars and of 3 tracks. There are 3 controller types; Control pad, Stylus, and Wrist Strap. The announcer talks to you. Ex. your remaining laps, if you are the winner, etc. Other than that...that's about it.
