Better Than Mama!
5 Star Review   By member MrNEWZ - Jun 30, 2007

Strengths: Awesome, original game. The price is right. Works really well with the DS stylus!

Weakness: I want a sequel! Now!

Cooking Mama is one of those games that jumps out at you right away. A DS cooking sim? I'm sold. The game play is, top to bottom, some of the most fun one can have in a real-world style sim. Plus, you can learn some of the steps in making your favorite dishes. Finally, a place for ramen and Chef Boyardee fed folks to learn how food is really made... well, not really. Cooking Mama is a game that lets you prepare tons of dishes in multiple styles. The game takes the traditional Japanese dishes, the "American" dishes, and makes sure to involve all the classics (FLAN~!). There's no doubt about it-- this game is great. If you own a Nintendo DS and don't own Cooking Mama, something is wrong.

Cooking Mama
3 Star Review   By member cheapfrag - Apr 16, 2007

Strengths: different, fun, addictive, good use of stylus

Weakness: gets a little repetitive.

Cooking Mama is a "cooking simulation" game for the Nintendo DS. Now you don't see too many of those types of games. Basically it's many mini games based upon making different food recipes. The game breaks down the recipe into different steps and you have to successfully complete each of those steps. For example, if you choose to make rice, the game breaks that down into measuring the rice, measuring the water, washing the rice and cooking the rice. To measure the rice, you tap the rice dispenser and rice flows into a measuring cup. You tap it again to stop the flow, then move the cup and dump it into the pot. There is a green line that shows the level of rice required. If you are under that line, you have to get more rice. But you have to do it within the time given. The same for measuring the water. For washing the rice, you use your stylus to spin the rice. You have to spin it and keep the meter within the green portion. And then to cook the rice, it tells you how long and you enter the time. That's a pretty simple example but gives you an idea. Harder recipes have more steps and harder steps. Then at the end of the recipe, you get a grade based upon how well you did, with 100 the best score. You also unlock additional recipes and there are variations of recipes. The game is fun. Even after you complete a recipe, you can replay it to get a better score. You can also combine recipes to make your own dishes. The game is also reasonably prices at around $20. Given the price, this is a game that is very worthwhile.

Cook till your heart is content! Cooking Mama
4 Star Review   By member illuming - Feb 23, 2007

Strengths: Strong value game for a low price, great use of DS features such as microphone

Weakness: Some parts of the game could have some more descriptions on how to complete.

Cooking Mama is a game where you will cook dishes even if you can't cook in real life. You'll make intuitive use of the DS features such as the microphone where you will blow to cool off the food that you have cooked. It's a great game that you can play on a road trip, or while on a plane. Doesn't require that much engrossing attention, but satisfying enough to keep you from getting bored during the trip. Pick it up and give it a shot. EVERYONE can cook in Cooking Mama!

You gotta do your cooking by the book!
3 Star Review   By member swordity - Feb 18, 2007

Strengths: Your Mother

Weakness: The mini games are kind of boring

Cooking Mama brings to the DS one of the most boring aspects of Harvest Moon: Cooking! Okay it's not that bad, you pick a dish and cook it through mini games. Mini games on the DS, who would have thought? I guess if you have any interest in cooking minigames this game is for you.

Cook as Mama tells you! OR else!
4 Star Review   By member Honrosie42 - Jan 13, 2007

Strengths: Cute visuals, fun minigames, lots of food to discover

Weakness: Same minigames over and over, some stupidly hard. Mama is passive agressive.

Here is a game where a cute lady (Mama I assume) wants you to help her cook. Several mini games using the touch screen are strung together to make a dish. Your over all score determines what rating Mama will give you. You do many things such as cutting, and chopping, and cooking. All the parts of cooking redused to minigame form. Don't screw up or Mama will look at you with her eyes full of flame and offer to fix it. I'd try not to tee her off If I were you! Sometimes during a dish you can do something diffrent and unlock a path to a new food. The minigames get repetitive, but that's not too bad if you pick up the game for quick bursts. I think its quite fun for the great price! And it makes me hungry!

The most fun cooking will ever be
4 Star Review   By member botticus - Dec 28, 2006

Strengths: Great use of the touch-screen

Weakness: Not a very deep game

Cooking Mama is a stellar example of what a budget title should be. Great and intuitive use of the stylus controls, lacking only in depth and presentation. Each recipe is essentially a collection of mini-games using the stylus as a knife, stirrer, hand, etc. All are quite a bit of fun, though a few can be rather difficult to master. The game isn't incredibly deep as most recipes will reuse many of the same steps. A great buy at $20.

Cooking Mama
5 Star Review   By member psincubus - Dec 26, 2006

Strengths: cheap price, fun

The games art style is great. Mama is a fun character. The gameplay mechanics are straightforward and easy to learn and the game is a lot of fun. For the low price of 19.99 retail, this game can be enjoyed by anyone. Can't wait for the nintendo Wii version.

Cooking Mama
4 Star Review   By member bob330i - Dec 17, 2006

Strengths: new genre, easy to pick up and play

Weakness: minimal replay value

I've played about half the recipes so far and having fun so far. Like others have said, it's set up as a bunch of minigames ala WarioWare. Since I enjoy the WW titles, I am enjoying this one as well. Its a good start into a new experience/genre, that I hope will contiue to evolve. Real recipes/country specific techniques could be incorporated or added as booster packs in the future. Cooking Mama incorporates some weird stuff to cook (Japanese dishes) but that's also part of the novelty of this title. So if you enjoy minigames with a foodie flair, at $20, it should be a no-brainer pick up.

fun to play in the beginning
3 Star Review   By member poesiacc - Nov 26, 2006

Strengths: unique concept, learn to cook, nice music

Weakness: indifference

no doubt it is a game game and fun to play in the beginning, but it is kind of boring after creating all the dishes because all you can do is to cook those dishes over and over again. i still recommand this game since it's very unique, just take it easy and slow and you can enjoy this game for a longer period of time! :)

Just like mama used to make
5 Star Review   By member GameCubeGirl - Nov 13, 2006

Strengths: Lots of fun for only $19.99.

Weakness: Multiplayer would have been nice.

Cooking Mama is essentially a whole collection of brief mini-games. There are 76 recipes in all. Most of the recipes are taken from the Japanese cuisine. The gameplay is simply amazing and the game is generally good. The game is basically composed of more than 30 mini-games, where you will need to perform several cooking tasks. Depending on how good you play each one, you will be awarded one of 3 medals (bronze, silver or gold). When you complete all the tasks required to cook a certain plate, you will get an overall score for the plate, which is calculated based on your score for each task. While it is hard to get a score of less than 50 points, getting the perfect score of 100 is even harder, with this mark only being achieved by top chefs. Cooking Mama for the Nintendo DS is well worth the $19.99 price tag.

A fun, odd game
4 Star Review   By member bookends - Oct 30, 2006

Strengths: Fun presentation, interesting Japanese recipes, budget price

Weakness: Can get repetitive or frustrating, some minigames aren't explained too well or are just frustrating

Cooking Mama is a niche, Japanese game that you would not normally see stateside. It's a series of similar minigames used to create culinary dishes, so naturally many dishes share the same steps and because of this it can get frustrating. However, it can be fun and it doesn't bank on a goofy factor like Warioware does. There are 76 or so recipes in the game to unlock and play. Some of the minigames can be frustrating such as peeling or just confusing. However, it is a unique type of game and it is priced little more than half as much as most new DS games. Recommended for those with an open mind and the urge to cook.

Unique and Fun Budget Title!
5 Star Review   By member SpazX - Oct 25, 2006

Strengths: Unique gameplay, 76 recipes, tons of fun, low price

Weakness: Not much replay value, no multiplayer

This is a very interesting game that you wouldn't have expected to make it to US shores. You do everything from cracking eggs to cooking fish over charcoal using the stylus input. It can get frantic and often frustrating trying to get things perfect for 100% ratings, but it's a lot of fun for a budget-priced game. The only downsides are that once you're done getting 100% on all the recipes and clearing the skills challenges there isn't much left to do and there's no multiplayer. It's well worth the price, but I would've loved for there to have been a multiplayer challenge mode or co-op and that would've made this well worth a full DS title price.

Cooking What? Cooking Mama!
3 Star Review   By member mirado182 - Oct 19, 2006

Strengths: -It's Unique!

Weakness: -Some may think it's too simple

Well this certaintly isn't something you see everyday. You'll fall either in one of two camps. One being those who find this quirky title entertaining. The other being ones who say things like how'd they ever get the guts to release this crap. Most likely, you'll know which camp you fall in already. If you like these kind of games though, I'd say go for it.

Just Like Mama
5 Star Review   By member Tricky02 - Oct 19, 2006

Strengths: Cooking Mama is an easy pick up and play $20 game.

Weakness: I have not found any.

Cooking Mama is a whole collection of short mini-games. There are four menus: Let's Cook, Combine, Use Skill, and options. Completing all of the initial 76 recipes is rather easy. Let's Cook mode (the main game) seems like a practice round for the Use Skill mode. Use Skill is a mode where it takes each individual mini-game and turns it into a time-based challenge mode. Cooking Mama is a game where fun-factor is the main focus here. If you like games such as WarioWare, I think you will like this game.
