Metroid Prime
5 Star Review  GameSpy - Nov 19, 2002

Metroid Prime is one of the finest games I've ever played. I'm still reeling from how incredible my experience with the game was. More than anything, though, I adore the fact that the negative speculation surrounding Prime's development is now obviously unwarranted. Nintendo made damned sure that Retro Studios' project lived up to the hype and what you're left with is a game that takes the ever-so-precarious leap from 2D to 3D with resounding success.

Samus's Best Moment
5 Star Review   By member NintendoGeek64 - Jan 20, 2006

Strengths: I thought this game had many strengths espiacially the bosses being so fun.

Weakness: The game wasnt bright enough. And the metroids really annoyed me.

I think this is an overall great game and would recommend it to any one who likes first person views. This is definatly one of samus's best moments. I hope the second one is just as good if not better.

Game of the year (a few years ago)
4 Star Review   By member botticus - Sep 23, 2005

Strengths: Great graphics, good action

Weakness: View/movement controls are a little lacking

I'm not so good at first-person shooters so I try not to judge on how I play. This game has some great graphics and sound which really immerse you in the environment. The learning curve was a little steep for me, but I'm improving as I go. The only thign I wish they had done differently was incorporating the C-stick. While walking around, you can't look up or down, only when aiming your cannon, which has taken a lot of getting used to for me.

Metroid Prime
5 Star Review   By member GreySector - Sep 13, 2005

Strengths: Strong storyline, great graphics and music, zillions of collectibles

Weakness: Having to walk all over creation!

I greatly enjoyed Metroid Prime. The graphics and puzzles were great (and I didn't even have to resort to a walkthrough except to find five of the missile expansions). The default hint system is seamless with regular gameplay and is a nice tug in the right direction, showing you where the next 'plot item' is located. The visor system is neat and frustrating at the same time. Having to walk back through the entire world looking at everything with your new visors is a real pain, but I appreciate the effort the programmers took to code everything four times (combat visor, scan visor, thermal visor and x-ray visor). Using the scan visor to download Chozo Lore, Pirate Data and Creature profiles is addictive! I am not a big fan of FPS games (I hate not knowing where my feet are) but gave Metroid Prime a chance. I can't say I regret it.

Nintendo Metroid Prime
4 Star Review   By member mick16 - Aug 14, 2005

Strengths: Best FPS out for the Gamecube

Weakness: Save Points, Controls, Tough Bosses

Nintendo Metroid Prime for the GameCube is the premier FPS game for the system. It's basically like the Halo for Gamecube without the multiplayer. You play the role of a some type of outer space bounty hunter and with the help of your guns and other gadgets you make your way through levels by either blowing things up or solving puzzles. The game is a lot of fun, but expect to be frustrated at times by tough bosses and lack of saves. The game can be found for less than $20, so if your a fan of FPS games and you have a game cube the game comes highly recommended.

Game of the year
5 Star Review   By member wampa8jedi - Jul 11, 2005

Strengths: Incredible graphics, gameplay, music, replayability, bosses

Weakness: Control scheme (maybe)

Honestly, if it wasn't for the darn control scheme (there is no dual analog support), Metroid Prime would have been one of the most universally accalimed games of all time. It's a game that features awesome music: dozens of breath-taking tunes. It's a game of beautiful vistas--whether you're in the jungle or the desert or a blizzard or a lake of fire, Metroid Prime goes over the top in the graphics category. And it's a game of excellent gameplay, as you wander througb a gigantic world in search of tons of cool items (much like Zelda) and you fight giant bosses that are out to kill you, and kill you fast. Recommended for all gamers, regardless of age or genre preference. Don't miss out on this one.

5 Star Review   By member eurenix - Jun 29, 2005

Strengths: Beautiful artwork. Impressive bosses.

Weakness: Might turn off players expecting a typical fps.

This is a great game. Buy it, play it, fall in love with it. With a few exceptions, the enemies in this game are not often difficult, but the fights are always interesting, and the creature design is really nice. Much like the original Metroid, the focus here is on exploration, on finding neat and interesting things throughout the game. Personally, I loved the story and the way it was revealed throughout the game. Rather than simply telling the story, the game makes the player search it out on enemy computers, on wall carvings left by the original inhabitants of the planet. For those that don't want to bother too much about the story, the game can be completed with a minimal amount of it, but there is quite a lot to find. This is not your typical fps. As much as this game is like anything, it feels like a Zelda type adventure/quest. In fact, the controls are far more reminiscent of Zelda than any FPS.

5 Star Review   By member classicgamer52 - Jun 29, 2005

Strengths: Excellent graphics and sound, good length

Weakness: Lots of backtracking through previous stages, as in previous Metroid games

Metroid Prime does an excellent job of translating the 2D Metroid series into a 3D action/shooter. Most of the familiar weapons show up, and the enviroments are some of the best-looking on the Gamecube. The levels can be a little too cliche (ice world, lava world, etc) but if you can look past that, Metroid Prime is a great game for both fans of the series and new players.

Strengths: Perfect transition of the Metroid franchise into 3D, great graphics and sound, amazing art style and immersion.

Weakness: Controls and pacing might feel out of place for diehard FPS fans, if you play it as a shooter rather than an adventure game.

Nintendo has done it again. Well, the formerly unknown Retro Studios has done it this time: brought another great Nintendo franchise into a perfect 3D form. Metroid Prime puts you directly into the helmet of Samus Aran, intergalactic bounty hunter, in her first console adventure since 1993. And it's a good one. Rather than take the standard FPS approach forcing the player to control a "camera on wheels", Retro has allowed the player to experience the game through Samus's eyes. Your heads-up display is displayed on her suit's computerized visor, which is affected by rain, snow, nearby electrical fields, and even the internal organs of recently deceased enemies. Metroid Prime takes immersion to a whole new level. From the intro scene where Samus lands on a seemingly abandoned space station, you are completely isolated from any civilization except the band of space pirates determined to eliminate you. As you explore the varied worlds of Tallon IV, you will journey through jungles, icy wastelands, volcanic caves, and radioactive mining operations, all while feeling as though you are actually wearing Samus's trademark Power Suit. Since Samus is virtually alone on the planet, the story is advanced by using your suit to scan data provided by the space pirates or legends left by the now-extinct Chozo race. It provides an interesting alternative to having a story spoon-fed down your throat. Using Samus's tracking system, you are able to lock on to enemies, giving you pinpoint accuracy. Don't assume that this makes the game easy, though, since many lifeforms are immune to most weapons and you'll have to use specific tactics to eliminate them. Bosses are prevalent, and since most of them tower several stories above Samus's head, you'll have to think quickly to defeat them. Retro has cleverly implemented old-school Metroid powerups like the classic Morph Ball and Charge Beam. When in morphball mode, the camera smoothly zooms to a third-person perspective and Samus can roll through tunnels, across rails, and into classic 2D puzzles. The amount of detail that Retro packed into this game is astounding. Innocent birds can be shot from the sky. Bright flashes of light reflect Samus's eyes onto her visor. Heat waves are emitted from your overheaded arm cannon. Every footstep, jump, and fall is accompanied by an appropriate sound. It all adds up to an amazing experience. The graphics in Metroid Prime are technically stunning, but the game exceeds most in its art direction. Every environment is distinctly different and beautiful in its architecture, terrain design, and enemy design. The game feels like an actual world, although it's distinctly placed in a space fantasy setting. For any Metroid fan, action-adventure fan, sci-fi fan, or just video game fan in general, Metroid Prime is a game that deserves to be played. With a hard mode and unlockable image galleries and bonuses, the replay value is quite good. Even without the bonuses, I'd be compelled to play it over and over. A word of warning, though: if you start the game expecting a classic run-and-gun first person shooter along the lines of Halo or Half-Life, you might be disappointed. As long as you think of Metroid Prime in terms of the Metroid series or a third-person adventure game (in first-person), the game is amazing. Retro has created one of my favorite games of this generation, and I'll be sure to keep an eye on them in the future.

Strengths: Graphics and controls are great. Excellent translation of the old school side-scrolling game into FPS.

Weakness: Scanning objects and back tracking.

Gameplay : 4 out of 5 Graphics : 5 out of 5 Sound : 5 out of 5 According to the critics, Metroid Prime is one of the best video games ever. I think it’s a very good first party game but it’s not gaming nirvana. The graphics and sound for the game are top-notch; they’re not over the top but blend everything together just right. Samus will explore several environments as she uncovers the mysteries of an extinct civilization and upgrades her power suit. In a lot of ways, Metroid Prime reminds me of the original Half Life experience. It’s a first person shooter (FPS) that keeps building anticipation about what’s going to happen next as solve the next puzzle or defeat one of the great bosses in the game. In other words, MP is a thinking person’s FPS. My biggest gripe about MP is that the storyline is advanced by scanning objects and creatures. This messes up the pacing of the game for me. (Note: The scanning of objects is not required but provides some unlockables if you do.) So, what’s the final verdict. I recommend MP for those that like FPS with adventure elements; however, don’t buy it if you’re looking for a fast action, trigger happy FPS.

4 Star Review   By member michaelsarris - Jun 1, 2005

Strengths: Metroid meets the 3rd dimension. Very high quality, well thought out, oozes atmosphere.

Weakness: Weak story, annoying bosses, will make you say "are we there yet"?

"Metroid Prime" is a mixed bag. Metroid fans will love it. It's a decent FPS, but it's not the brilliant, perfect game that many would like it to be. On the one hand, "Metroid Prime" will suck you in, will addict you, and will amaze you. You will want to play, to solve the mystery, and you won't want to put down the controller. On the other hand, there will be times that are just dull. Enemies respawn, which is annoying, but if they didn't, the landscape would be utterly still, devoid of just about anything interesting. The game is pretty large, and as new areas become open to you and complete the landscape available to you, you'll find yourself going from here to there and back again. A lot. And then, you'll encounter a clever puzzle, or you'll realize the solution to something and you'll be amazed and satisfied that the game is so well thought out, that everything seems to have it's logical place. The scope of the game, from the size of the areas to the plot, feels huge, at least at first. And then, you'll find it tedious, backtracking yet again, and realize what looked so vast and amazing before isn't really all that big. I found the boss battles slightly annoying. They weren't overly difficult, but it was difficult to see if your strategy was having any effect. Usually, Metroid or Zelda games make you think out your strategy, and provide adequate feedback as to whether you're on the right track. "Metroid Prime" didn't give very good feedback, making solutions seem arbitrary, or obscure, or designed to sell hint books. The atmosphere is mostly amazing, with incredible visuals. Things are often set off angle, making it more disorienting and creepy. Everything looks great and sounds great and looks and feels like it should. In fact, Metroid is quite remarkable for one thing -- it manages to translate Metroid to the 3rd dimension perfectly. Lots of people (me included) wondered if it could even be done. This game proves that not only could it be done, but it could be done well, and everything that was important and wonderful about Metroid could be preserved. That's a great accomplishment. Metroid is more positive than negative. If it didn't run out of oomph about halfway through, I'd unhesitatingly recommend it. But while it is very polished, it leaves an empty feeling. It doesn't satisfy the way that it should. It does many things right, but lacks that extra depth that makes it an unforgettable experience from start to finish. If you're a fan of previous Metroids, of course you'll like this. If you like FPS games, this one would be middling to good, depending on your enthusiasm for all things Metroid. It is one of the better games on the Gamecube. It's just not the holy grail.

5 Star Review   By member mcgavin27 - May 20, 2005

Strengths: great control

Weakness: weak camera

Concept-(9.75): This is Samus's first game on the Gamecube. It is really remarkable how all the elements from the 2D Metroid games have been executed perfectly on the game. In Prime, you start out with your Varia Suit, your charge beam, missles, morph ball, bombs, and your grapple beam. You lose all of these within a few minutes of playing the game after an explosion on the space pirate's space station. You are left with nothing except your basic power suit, and a power beam that can't charge. You then, chase Ridley off the station to Tallon IV, a deserted planet that was once home for the Chozo people. Tallon IV is where the rest of the game will take place. You must first, gather up all your original items by defeating bosses or finishing puzzles. Once you have done this you will be able to open new areas. The game appears to never have load times, but they are actually disguised through elevator rides. The game is played like a FPS, but switches to 3rd person when using the morph ball. Even though you can lock on to enemies, that doesn't mean you will always hit them. They can dodge or block your shots. You have 4 different beams; power, wave, ice, and plasma. You can also find items that let you combine your missles with beams. If you use missles with a plasma beam you will get a flame thrower for example. TallonIV doesn't have any teleports or stuff like that, so you have to walk everywhere you want to go. By the end of this game you will know TallonIV very, very well. Environments include Phendrana Drifts(ice), Magmoor Caverns(lava), Tallon Overworld(grass), Chozo Ruins(desert), and Phazon Mines(cave). At the beginning of Prime you think the main enemy in this game will be Ridley, then you will learn that the space pirates are using Phazon for some experiments to enhance metroids and themselves. Then you learn about Metroid Prime. Metroid Prime is not just a fancy title for the game, it is the boss of the game. You must play this game if you are to truly understand how great it is.

Strengths: Great starting point for bringing Metroid series into the 3d realm, Great graphics, good sound, and excellent level design.

Weakness: Controls need help, Repetitive respawning enemies, Lots of backtracking, and Story is lacking.

Metroid Prime is a FPS shooter/adventure game for Gamecube. Metroid Prime does a faithful job of recreating the metroid world in 3d. It fits right into the Metroid universe. Graphics, sound, and level design are amazing and fun to blast through. Finding all the upgrades is a blast as well. Yet, that's where flaws come in. A lot of backtracking to find all the items. That's when you notice the enemies respawn in the same spots everytime you enter an area. The story is lacking as well, but its the same typical Metroid storyline. Samus loses her armor and powerups and has to find them all again to kill off the evil bad guys. Then you add in that the controls don't handle well for an FPS and you can actually come away from this game with a dull boring experience. You have autoaim and you can't move target reticule around unless you are standing still. Its a little backwards. Some of you might not like it. Specifically, the PC FPS players. If you can get past these flaws you will love this game. Give the game a 2 if you are a PC FPS player, give the game a 4 if you like a change in your FPS experience, and a 5 if you are a rabid Nintendo fanboy that can't give any of your Nintendo games a score less than the max.

Strengths: An amazing game. Everything you could want.

Weakness: None.

After taking a generation off, Samus returned in Metroid Prime for the GC. When people heard that Retro Studios, made up of members of the old Turok team, was making it into a first person shooter, they were irate. As it turns out, this is in the first person, and you do shoot things, but that's where its similarities to Halo and its ilk end. It's Metroid exploration through and through, and you'll love it. Graphics are great, music and sound are great, gameplay is superb. If you have a GC, you'd be foolish not to get this. In fact, it's easily worth buying a GC just for this game. Get it.

Strengths: great graphics, amazing environments, fun to play, fairly difficult, good story

This game is amazing, and is easily one of the best this generation. The graphics are great, and the environments are very detailed and fun to look at. It is very fun to play, and the difficulty is high enough that it is actually satisfying to beat, but not so much so that it is frustrating (except the very end...but it still wasn't bad). I have heard complaints about the story because there are not many cutscenes, and Samus never talks. However, I think that this actually made more sense in the context of the game, and I liked the way the story was told (through decrypting the Space Pirate's data logs).

Strengths: Graphics, gameplay, sound, music

Weakness: Takes a bit of time to grow on you

Many were worried about Metroid going into the 3D world with Metroid Prime. Well, those fears can be cast aside as this game has managed to become one of the best games ever produced. The graphics are simply beautiful and they contain a ton of detail in every environment. The environments are all interesting and look unique. The sound is also very good with appropriate sounds for enemies as well as weapons. The music in the game is also surprisingly good -- good to the point where one would consider buying a soundtrack because the music is so enjoyable to listen to. The gameplay is also second to none. Metroid Prime plays a lot like a first person shooter except that it incorporates a lot of platforming elements. It works very well after one gets used to it and it will become second nature. This game is simply a joy to explore -- every moment of this game is entertaining and fans of action and adventure games will absolutely love this game.

Strengths: Very good shooter!

Weakness: Graphics could be better

I would review this game as a very playable shooter. What I mean is, it was easy to get started in this game and once playing I found myself wanting to play more. I wish the graphics were better and the storyline could also be better. I like the twist of turning yourself into a ball, it opens up pathways you couldn't get to without.

Strengths: Fast action, Nice graphic and sound mix, cool story line with gameplay toughness progress while you advance.

Weakness: Although the FPS game are fun, it gets kinda same old same old feeling after while.

Over all, it is a fun filled, fast action FPS game. But I guess it is me that gets bored over same thing over and over.

Strengths: Good game, tells you what to do if your old enough to read.

Weakness: It's a little tuff for 4 or 5 year olds to at first.

Great price on a good game even if it's been out for a while. But its alot like watching a cartoon if you help them kill the monsters.

Strengths: awesome gameplay, story and graphics - the game is challenging but extremely fun and addicting.. a cool world/environment!

Weakness: nothing - really!

This game alone is worth buy a Gamecube for! it's awesome and a must-have. The game design is great and intense; it's a really cool 1st person shooter.. one of the best - definitely on gamecube!

Strengths: You know that make you happy right at the beginning!

Weakness: If you are tired of this kind of fighting game...this may not be for you~

Highly recommend to give it a shot eventhough you never like this kind of shooting/fighting game. First, it is not so difficult to control the character. Being an adult, I was kind of slow and afraid to learn how to play those 3-D games because there are just way toooooo many functions I have to remember. But this one is just right and also powerful! I just cannot wait to try the sequal!

Strengths: Great Graphics and some Very Challenging Puzzles. Level designs are beautiful and large enough to allow some fun free roaming.

Weakness: Very Challenging Puzzles! I can't get off of the second level!

This game is fun, but it is so challenging for a guy like me who just loves to run and gun. I can't figure out the stupid puzzles so I'll just get Halo 2.

Strengths: I suppose it would work for those nostalgic and the graphics arent the worst i've ever seen

Weakness: Stiff boring gameplay, graphics bland to other game's standards, environments dark, autoaim with fps.. no thanks, honestly is headache inducing.

Let me start off by saying I have never ever returned or sold a game I have owned in all my years except for once when the CD didnt work. And all I have to say is this game is mediocre beyond words. The gameplay is outdated and boring and the autoaim function totally kills the reason to have a first person perspective. This game would have been a tad better had it all been in third person or the traditional metroid style. I bought this game upon the faith of many good reviews but ended up with one of the worst games I have ever played. I ended up ebaying it to some guy in france because I couldnt return it. I have played through alot of crappy games but none such that I hated playing more than this one. It honestly gave me a headache and I play FPS all the time on PC and consoles. All I got to say is that it's an overhyped fanboy vehicle with the common comment where the gamefanboy gets all happy cuz he see's Samus through the visor which gives him more joy since he'll never get a real woman to even look at him (besides his mom). AVOID this game at all costs unless you are a metroid fanboy. And no I don't hate metroid, I enjoyed the GBA fusion game very much.

Strengths: A must-have for the Gamecube, first person shooter meets adventure game, best sound and graphics on the Gamecube, amazing story

Weakness: Controls are a little odd for a FPS

Metroid Prime is the must-have title for the Gamecube. The graphics and sound are truly the best, bar none. The immersive world hooks you in from the first moment and doesn't let you go. The puzzles are well thought out, the action is intense, and truly shows some intelligence in the game design. One very minor issue is the controls, and it's not a fault of the game, more of the Gamecube, as dual analog sticks are a better way to do a FPS. Again, it's a very minor issue and easily overlooked. Truly the best game for the Gamecube in my mind, and without question, it's a must-have for the Gamecube.

Strengths: Fun.

Weakness: Too little save points.

This game is fun and great for all ages. the only thing that sets it back is that there are barley any save points. You could play for an hour get two upgrades die and have to go all over again.

Strengths: Best first person shooter ever

This might be the best game ever... no Zelda and Mario are still up there. But hands-down this is the bets first person shooter ever. Those X-boxies that think Halo is so cool, well take a look at Metroid and you'll be amazed. The graphics are beautful. The intense gameplay is matched by none but OoT.

Strengths: great grphics.awesome gameplay.extremely cool enviroments, toughness progresses, great graphics, awesome enimies, epic ending.

etroid Prime is a great game and has awesome graphics. My favorite weapon was the ice beam because I liked the way it froze your opponents and you could then use a missile to destroy them. I highly reccomend this game to any one who wants to buy this game.

Strengths: It's stength is graphics. Another is the first person shooter. It has more of a challange. Same with all the missle weapons and other stuuf you have to find.

This was one of the best games for Gamecube since Super Smash Bros Melee. It is a lot more harder than all the other Metroid games. The graphics are the first thing you notice. It is wasy beter than the other games for Gamecube. Also it is a whole lot more challenging. Another good part is when you challange Meta Ridley. He is way better in this game than any other game.

Strengths: This game has excellent graphics and the gameplay is awesome, overall this game is one of the best games I have ever played.

Weakness: none.

Metroid Prime, as i said before, is a great game and has awesome graphics. My favorite part about it was the multiple weapons. My favorite weapon was the ice beam because I liked the way it froze your opponents and you could then use a missile to destroy them. I highly reccomend this game to any one who wants to buy this game.

Strengths: Great graphics, gameplay, and storyline. The array of weapons and armor types (along with the different "views" to use) makes it awsome visually along with great sound for keeping you indulged.

Weakness: Not many, just the usuall few glitches with first person shooters.

This is a great game. Also once you complete the game you are given the original Metroid to play in the "old school" style, giving a completely new way to play this game. Playing as Samus is awesome and great videos along with huge manacing bosses.

Strengths: Everything is totaly SWEET the graphics, the gameplay, the controles, the Exlusive desighn of the creatures, JUST PLAIN EVERYTHING.

Weakness: I cant say that there is any weakness at all.

This is the ultimo game ever and it just plain out loud beats every game i ever played. It's like one of those special games that sticks with you forever, i mean once i got it i couldn't put the controller down and every spare second i had went to Metroid Prime. It is an alltime hit and the best first person, shooting, adventure, puzzle game ever and i don't see how anybody could not like it.

5 Star Review   By member RavenAranshadow - Dec 11, 2002

Strengths: The best in wonderful graphics and sceenery. A great selection of armor and weapons.

Weakness: Not much of a story even though much of Samus's past is revealed, also the first person veiw makes battles harder. Example: The fight with the omega pirate. (I kept walking into the phazon)

All-Around great game with great bosses and enemies. Shigeru Miyamoto did a great job with Metroid Prime. (and hopefully a great job with my metroid prime sequeal that miyamoto will help me make, oh you want to know a name...it's called Metroid Prime: Return of Raven...bet you didnt know samus had a brother..!!!!oops I think I said too much.)

Strengths: Definitely best Game Cube game to date. Awesome graphics, outstanding gameplay. I can't stop playing it.

Weakness: Would have been nice to have a third person option. But still a great game.

Prime gives me the same feeling I had when I played through all the other Metroids. I definitely recommend this game to everyone. If you don't own a Game Cube, go get one. The person who gave 1 star is an idiot and is obviously illiterate.

5 Star Review   By member Samus1111 - Nov 30, 2002

Strengths: This game is full of strengths and does not need to have anyone naming them because this is an extremely well rounded game with no flaws whatsoever.

Weakness: The only weakness I can think of is after a boss fight your fingers feel like they are going to fall off.

I recommend this game to everyone who has a Gamecube, or even a TV. This game is so great if it had multiplayer it would be the ultimate game. Period. No doubt. The person who gave this one star is either video game challenged or has bigger "issues" that need to be dealt with currently. So disregaurding the Ding-a-Ling who gave this one star the overall is now five stars.

Strengths: Great Visuals, gameplay, and story.

Weakness: Controls are odd but very easy to use.

This is one of the best titles of the year and by far the best on the gamecube so far. I have heard of many people buying a gamecube system just to play this game. Yes, it is THAT good. The other reviewer (the one that gave this game 1 star) seemes to be illiterate so I wouldn't place much value in his/her review if you are contemplating a purchase of this title. To sumerize: If you own a gamecube, buy this game!

5 Star Review   By member Scizor666 - Nov 15, 2002

Strengths: Everything, expecially graphics and sound. (Based on the opinions of both EGM and IGN.com)

Weakness: Nothing in particular.

Although I have yet to play this game since IT IS NOT OUT YET (why have other people said they played the whole thing and preach that it sucks is beyond me). I am very excited to get this game as it received amazing reviews. IGN.com, which gave this game a 9.8 and EGM (magazine), which gave it a perfect 10, are both highly regarded videogame associations and their reviews speak for themselves. IGN has only given out a perfect 10 twice, and a 9.8 is UNBELIEVABLY high. I say get this game when it comes out on Nov 18th ... you won't regret it. Go to Gamers.com and read their review of the game for even more incite to how amazing this game truly is. Also .. disregard the review that has given this game a 1, that person has clearly NOT PLAYED THIS GAME since it is NOT OUT YET.
