Soul Calibur II
5 Star Review  GameSpy - Aug 26, 2003

When the Dreamcast hit the market, there was one title that was a must-have. Over the course of its entire, brief lifespan, there was a single game that really symbolized the Dreamcast -- you just had to have this game, and if you didn't, what was the point? That game was Soul Calibur. The GameCube is almost like this generation's Dreamcast: cheap but powerful, loved by dedicated fans, but overlooked by the masses. Soul Calibur II is excellent on all of the systems, and the GCN edition rests right between the PS2 and Xbox versions.

Soul Calibur II
4.5 Star Review  IGN.com - Aug 26, 2003

Sometimes, evolution is not mandatory. Take the horseshoe crab, Komodo dragon, or even a cockroach as examples. Each individual creature has remained relatively unchanged for hundreds of thousands of years, yet each species continues to successfully survive in this ever-changing world of ours. We often take for granted, or simply forget that more primitive life forms thrive to this very day as a consequence of their underlying simple forms.

Soul calibur 2 is even better than the first (the first game is ok too)
5 Star Review   By member Purplequeen12 - Sep 28, 2007

Strengths: Great fighting stratagies, Good graphics, Taki is a cool character

Weakness: Gamecube is pretty much replaced with stinky, expensive Wii. I kinda miss Dreamcast.

I absolutley love this game. It has cutting edge graphics, cool characters, neat fighting moves for each character. It has more girls to choose from than the first. I have always loved this game. I heard bad things about the third one unfortunately. I would totally recommend this game because of these reasons.

Wow, just wow
1 Star Review   By member SCIISucks - Oct 31, 2005

Strengths: Link appeals to young children

Weakness: Could write a whole review just about this

Characters fall out of the ring at the slightest provocation sometimes, and yet while flying three feet above the ground are able to bounce off of thin air other times. Sometimes vertical moves track people while sidestepping, other times they don't. Nintendo is still the king of poor controller design, and this games takes complete advantage of that poor design. Characters lack any semblance of balance. Button mashing is a viable strategy, even against experienced players. This is just a poorly executed game. It's a shame that so many people's expectations have fallen so far. I weep for humanity, and pity those that have wasted more than twenty minutes trying to find rhyme or reason within the travesty that is Soul Caliber II. The people responsible for this game should be ashamed.

Great 3D fighter
4 Star Review   By member botticus - Oct 31, 2005

Strengths: Good graphics, easy basic controls, multiplayer

Weakness: Single player is a bit too easy

Bearing in mind that I don't have a lot of experience with fighters (my last few experiences probably being on the SNES or arcade), this is one of the better ones I've played. The 3D gameplay is very smooth and intuitive. I found that the basic fighting maneuvers are very easy to pick up. There are plenty of combos and whatnot that require a bit more attention, but if all you want to do is button-mash hitting and kicking, you can do that. My only beef is that single player is pretty easy. I was able to beat the initial campaign in my sitting covering about 20-30 minutes. That being said, the real strength of this game is playing others, which is great fun, even when having a beatdown handed to you.

Soul Calibur II (GCN)
4 Star Review   By member cotebryan1 - Oct 28, 2005

Strengths: (1)Nice environments and character models (2) Fun pick-up-and-play fighting (3) a wealth of unlockables

Weakness: (1) Button mashing seems to work almost as well as true skill and strategy (2) Some effects are really bad/cheap looking (water splashing when a character falls out of the ring)

Soul Calibur II is a really solid fighting game. The graphics are great and the action is easy to pick up and play. It's really the most fun as a multiplayer game and lone gamers may get tired of it after they've unlocked all the new characters. The main advantage of the Gamecube version is that it has Link (Legend of Zelda series), which may be enough incentive for Nintendo fans, like myself. It is a great game with really nice graphics and makes for a lot of fun in short bursts with friends. I would recommend a purchase if you have someone you can play it with.

Possibly the best fighter out there
5 Star Review   By member eurenix - Sep 8, 2005

Get this game. Soul Calibur 2 is simply one of the best fighting games in existence. It also has the added benefit of being a weapons based fighter, which is much less common in the market. The game is of course gorgous. The quest type mode is a good addition to add replay value for the single player. Rather than it being nothing more than a time killer, the player must also play this to unlock most of the different types of weapons the players can use. The weapon choice really doesn't change much, they are simply tweaks of how the weopons function. But they do add something to the game. Specifcally to the cube version, the extra character is Link from the Zelda series, which I really like, but I haven't really played that much with the other console specific characters. I just like playing as Link.

Great game for even part time players
5 Star Review   By member okinhim - Aug 10, 2005

Strengths: Easy controls allow you to fight the first game and not have to memorize a lot of combo sequences. Many characters with differing weapons and style of fighting.

Weakness: No online play

This game is great for players that want to spend any amount of time on it. If you can only play for 5 minutes you can sit down and fight the computer in the differant arenas under differant game scenarios, ie:2 out of 3 bouts, survival (keep fighting single bouts agains random opponents), team vs team (still just you but you have 3 characters to make it through the other teams three) and more. If you have more time you can go to the arena or play the mission mode which will make you use different characters at differant time and challenge you with different obstables during the bouts (try defeating opponents while you are being blown off the stage or getting blown up when you hit the ground or walls.) The more you play the mission mode the more specials get opened for you like extra characters, different weapons, other arenas, even different costumes for the characters. There are extra levels of arena combat available through the mission too. My grandson is good for his age (though only 4 he beats everyone else he plays, much to their chagrin) but i can give him an advantage by allowing him to up his life force during the selection process. He started off button mashing and was able to do fairly well, aggravating even me sometimes, but he learned the basics for several characters quickly. We have found that all the characters have good and bad parts so no single character is all-powerful. Over all this is a great game and I really don't have a negative thing to say, I really don't care if it has online play or not. I rarely have a lot of time to spend in the game.

best fighter on GC
5 Star Review   By member t260 - Jul 26, 2005

Strengths: Link as a secret character

Weakness: not a huge improvement from the first game.

SC2 is easily the best fighter on GC. There are many characters, each with their own fighting style. The most intersting is probably Link, who is now a playable character. The graphic and sound are also amazing. The only down side is that the improvement is that not that much compare to the dreamcast version, which is a minor complain since the dreamcast version is already prefect.

Soul Calibur II
5 Star Review   By member GreySector - Jul 13, 2005

Strengths: Balanced characters and weapons, excellent character control

Every time I pick up this game I am taken aback by the intricacies of it's gameplay. Sublte doges, ducks, sidesteps, and parries provide excellent control and style variation for the expert player. Gameplay is extremely well-balanced, with each move having a countermove. Hits can be blocked, but not throws. Ducking can dodge throws and high hits but leaves you vulnerable to mid hits. Character recovery times, speed, range, power and agility are all balanced for a zero-sum character system. This character system makes all character types capable of competition if you play maximize their strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. Single player offers a very interesting (and frustrating at times) Weapon Master Mode to unlock certain characters and stages, as well as to accumulate money for the purchase of in-game extras like alternate costumes and weapons. Best of all for the Gamecube version is the inclusion of Link as a playable character. Zelda fans unite!

Strengths: Great fighting engine, good diverse cast of characters - Link is an awesome addition

Weakness: None.

Soul Calibur 2 is probably the finest 3D fighter available for the Gamecube. A diverse, interesting cast of characters to choose from, combined with a very strong single player game makes this a must buy. It only gets better with friends, as well. The Gamecube version features Link from "The Legend of Zelda" as a guest appearance. His cameo might seem weird at first, but he is alot of fun to play as and plays exactly as you would expect him to, complete with boomerang and arrows. Overall, a fantastic fighter - if you own a Gamecube, you owe it to yourself to play this game.

4 Star Review   By member sabin23 - Jun 26, 2005

Strengths: Great graphics, solid controls, the ability to use Link!

Weakness: Not a huge leap from the Dreamcast version.

Soul Calibur is one of the great fighting games of this current generation of consoles. It's pretty to look at and just a joy to play. The environments are great (although I wish they were more interactive), unlocking weapons is a great experience and the musical score is fantastic. The controls are easy (even beginners can mash the buttons with moderate success) but incredibly deep. While the game is good, it doesn't seem all too different then what I played on Dreamcast a few years ago - I guess if it's not broke, don't fix it. Even so, this game seems a little too familiar despite the graphical overhaul. Although this game is on all 3 consoles (PS2, XB, GC), I believe the Gamecube version is the best for one reason alone. You can play as Link from the popular Zelda series. And not the cel-shaded Wind Waker Link but an actual mature Link reminiscent of the Ocarina of Time game. So Link fans should definitely buy this game to hold them over until Twilight Princess.

3 Star Review   By member mrohlf - Jun 11, 2005

Strengths: Variety in attacks, interesting weapon system, good control, great graphics.

Weakness: Story mode is short, it's possible to simply mash buttons.

I've never been a huge fan of fighting games, but Soul Calibur 2 seems like a decent one. Unlike other fighting games, SC2 is more weapons-based, so each character has a different fighting style based on his or her weapon. By progressing through the story mode, you can unlock different weapons for each characters. For me, Soul Calibur 2 was easier to learn than most fighting games. While other games require the player to memorize long strings of button combinations, the attacks in this game are fairly straightforward. I haven't played this game very much, but several of my friends like it a lot. If you're a fighting game fan, be sure to pick this one up. I was able to find it at K-Mart for $10, so if you look around a bit, you can find some good deals on it.

4 Star Review   By member uiowashop - Jun 8, 2005

Strengths: Graphic, action, different modes to play

Weakness: The additional character is weak

Soul Calibur has the reputation of being the best fight game in different platform. Soul Calibur II has made big improvement in graphic and game play. It is the best fight game title I have ever played on Game cube. You have lots of choices when choosing your favorite character to fight. Personally, Maxi got my vote. However, you should play them one by one at least for once. You will find amazing actions and suprising attacks from each every one of them. So put your time to explore all of them. The game will include a additional character for each platforms:PS2, GC and Xbox. The one for GC should be Zelda. Its fight is ok, but just can fit into the whole picture of the game. Better take it off the game.

5 Star Review   By member galvatron2k1 - Jun 3, 2005

Strengths: Controls, Graphics, Sound, Variety of modes

The sequel to arguably the greatest game for the Sega Dreamcast, the Gamecube definitely does the game justice. Packed with more characters and a console specific character (Link – Gamecube, Spawn – XBOX, Hirachi – PS2), this newest installment proudly carries on the lineage of the series. Graphically, the game looks fantastic from the characters, all the way down to the stage backgrounds. The sound is great, showcasing the orchestral theme music for each stage, as well as the before and after match dialog and in game shouting and screaming. However, the controls are probably the strongest point of the game. The move sets for the characters is very in-depth; easy to learn, but challenging to master. If you are a fan of fighting games, this is a highly recommended purchase.

4 Star Review   By member nwaugh - Jun 2, 2005

Strengths: Great graphics, solid controls and gameplay

Weakness: Not a big improvement over the Dreamcast's Soul Calibur

This is a sequel to the classic fighter on the Dreamcast - Soul Calibur. There are some graphics updates, more characters, and the addition of some new gameplay modes, but this version isn't the revolution in the fighting genre that the first was. That's not to say it's bad; it is still an excellent fighting game worthy of its lineage and a must-have for those who haven't played the first. The Gamecube version includes Link as an exclusive character; unfortunately, the novelty of having a classic Nintendo character in Soul Calibur II wears off once you realize that he doesn't belong with the rest of the "cast."

Strengths: Graphics are as good as they get for the characters & backrounds, every character has a TON of moves, Link from the Zelda series is a sercret character!

Weakness: Single player game while fun & has plenty of stuff to do can get boring 2 player is more fun & is where it's at for fighting games IMO

When it comes to 3D fighting games Namco is as good as it gets. Soul Calibur II is a one on one fighting game where each character has a weapon unique to them. The thing that makes this game so great is the fact that the game is so complex that it is as I like to think it can be played very much like a sport. The game has probably about 1,000 moves I often find myself playing against the computer & learning how some moves are useful when used right that I didn't think of myself. In short this game is a must have for anyone that is a fan of 3D fighting games.

Strengths: Intense graphics, Great combo system, Best move throw ever on a fighting games. Get to Play as Link from Legend of Zelda.

Weakness: Not as fun as the orignal Sega Dreamcast game.

This is actual a third game in the series, 1st game was release for the Playstation 1 as Soul Blade. After a over the top sequel on the Sega Dreamcast. Soul Calibur II has alot to live up for. For 1 thing, as many have said the character design has been kinda of kiddy down. and battle arena seems kinda bland this time around. game was more hardcore & mature on the dreamcast version. Ever tho the Gamecube & Xbox version was better then the Playstation version. There is still a problem with the combo system. where, button masher could take you out & a few cheap throw moves. This is a fun game no doubt! Rental before Buy... Rating: 3 Ouuta 5 Stars

Strengths: Great Gamecube graphics.

Weakness: Gets kind of repetitive.

If you're into fighting games, this is an awesome one. And as a Nintendo Gamcube exclusive, Link is in it. The graphics are really good. You can find this game for a cheap price nowadays.

Strengths: Great graphics, great control, nice soundtrack

Weakness: Maybe a little too easy.

This is a great game overall. In addition, it has the Link character exclusive to the gamecube. The soundtrack really gets you into the game. Also the story line behind the characters is interesting. The weapons battle mode also extends the game so that you can get new weapons and unlock new characters.

Strengths: Deep balanced gameplay.

Weakness: Environments not very interactive

Anyone who played Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast knows this fighting series stands for excellence. With SC2, that excellence is met and exceeded. A year old and even though other gloried series have seen their iterations released, this is still the best fighting game of the current generation. Very deep for single player play with tons of unlockables- the weapons alone number well over a hundred. And the two player combat is extremely well balanced. The only downsides were after a game like DOA3, the environments are fairly static. Of the three systems, Link is the most enjoyable bonus character to play and is the best fit in the Soul Calibur universe. Added pluses like Japanese voices picture galleries are easily to overlook. It will be a long time before this game is considered out of date and at a pricepoint of under $20, well worth picking up.

Strengths: One of the best and deepest fighting games out there, weapon combat is well done, Link is a great character to play, great graphics, lots of moves to master, lots of unlockables

Weakness: Each version has a character unique to the console version, button mashing gets you farther than you'd think, no online play

Soul Calibur from the Dreamcast makes it way onto the current consoles, with a unique character per console version, with the Gamecube getting Link from the Legend of Zelda. The graphics are top-notch, making it a great game to look at. The depth of the game is amazing, with dozens of moves for each character to learn and use, both hand-to-hand and weapon-based. The weapon combat is done pretty well, giving additional depth to the game. The unlockable aspects for new outfits and weapons and characters gives some great replayability, though online play would have been a nice addition. Overall, if you're looking for a great fighting game, don't let this one slip by. And if you're really interested in it and have multiple consoles, pick up a copy for each one.

Strengths: Fighting

Weakness: Ability to tap A and do combos

I can only call this game decent. As a previous reviewer said, you could do all of the moves you ever nee by pressing A and other combos as fast as you can. That aside, this game has a lot of moves, a lot of characters, and a lot of cool missions.

Strengths: Excellent graphics, great weapons and great moves. One of the best games everl.

Weakness: No weakness at all, everthing is great

The game has a wide variety of weapons to choose from. It has excellent graphics and also has a wide variety of moves to use. I especially like the fact that we can fight with LINK from Zelda, which none of the other versions have.

Strengths: Well Balanced Fighter, Zelda's Link is in it

Perfect for fighter newbies(easy setting) to professional brawlers(ultra-hard), this game offers so much. Technically deep fighting system and story mode, quick versus and arcade modes, lots of extras to unlock and play. Memorable Characters, fun by yourself or with a group of friends taking turns pounding one another into the ground. Better watch out, me and Voldo are coming after you

Strengths: Variaty of characters.

Weakness: EVerything Else!

Ok, Soul Caliber 2 is SO bad that you can literaly beat the game pressing just one button! That's unacceptable. Now some of you will say, "Hey that game had high expectaions. This guys a moron!" But seriosly, if you wanna play that badly, go ahaed. Ignore the kid and then get eatin by giant spiders.
