Solid Bike
5 Star Review   By member Nater__ - Jul 8, 2012

Strengths: very sturdy, good features and settings

Weakness: -control panel looks a bit dated

Very good bike. Had this for quite a few years with no problems, still running strong. The step through design makes it very easy for me to get in and out since I have joint problems.

Very Smooth, Looks Great, Comfortable with Good Features
5 Star Review   By member dave0000 - Jul 8, 2012

Strengths: -Wide seat (plus adjustable distance)-Pre set exercise routes-variety of tension settings-heart rate sensors-very solid (does not bounce or move around)

Weakness: -you will need to tighten the screws on the seat about every year (minor)-does take up more space than other bikes -internal pulley system flaws (on early production models - not on mine)

I bought this used a few years and am very happy with it. This is one of the higher end recumbent bikes. I know that some of the earlier production models had problems with the internal pulley system. These issues were later addressed. You should test the bike out on a high tension setting. If you don't feel solid resistance it may be one of the earlier production models with the pulley system flaws. Other than that, great bike all round! Comfortable seat, variety of settings!

Nordic track SL728
1 Star Review

Strengths: Comfortable and plenty of adjustability

Weakness: Durability

The roller bearing is junk. It wore out in less than 100 miles of riding. Nordick Track makes you buy an entire flywheel assembly as replacement for $149. plus S&H. This is a ripoff

SL 728 drive clutch
1 Star Review

Strengths: Looks nice

Weakness: Poor design in drive system

The weak spot is a drive clutch bearing that breaks and renders the bike useless. Nordic Track will only send the entire flywheel for $128. The bearing no doubt was made in China and is of poor quality. May have to junk the entire bike. Warranty period is over. Would never buy another Nordic Track product.

Nordic Track SL728
1 Star Review

Strengths: None.

Weakness: Bearings in the bike fail, which makes it unusable.

The bearings in the axle failed after a couple of months, then the replacement failed a couple of months after that. When the bearings fail, you can't peddle, making it totally useless. I will never buy another Nordic Track product.

No problems. Works great.
5 Star Review   By member bikerjj - Feb 12, 2008

Strengths: Multiple functions

Weakness: Construction a little loose.

I have had this bike for over 2 years and have put well over 1000 miles on it. Other than a few squeeks in the seat design, the bike has worked great. I have not had any of the problems mentioned in the other reviews and I would buy another similar bike again.

Tension motor bad
2 Star Review   By member disneyhound - Sep 25, 2006

Strengths: design is comfortable

Weakness: one year warranty is about equal to life

This was a replacement for a previous model. That models internal crank stripped! Took over two months of phone calls to get a replacement. The set-up was not easy, some alignment problems in the seat, not very good quality control over there in China! The tension motor started acting up within a few weeks, but it was then over a year since I purchased the first bike so I was SOL... This company has gone down hill! Expect the amount of life of Nordictrack products to equal warranty plus a couple days!

Defective design in pulley system
1 Star Review   By member Steve728 - Sep 5, 2006

Strengths: Nice to look at.

Weakness: Breaks easily due to poor design.

A drive pulley with interior roller bearings is so poorly engineered that the first SL728 (Model NTC4015.2) I brought home broke within 5 days. Replaced by Sears with another SL728 (Model NTC4015.0) the second one broke within 3 months. Same cracked pulley each time. This is not a weight-bearing item, it is simply part of the flywheel propulsion system. If you use this bike: it will break. Guaranteed

Nordic Track SL 728 Problem
2 Star Review

Strengths: Nice bike, nice features. The wheel runs quietly.

Weakness: The flywheel axle bearings fail. The seat is squeaky.

The flywheel axle bearings on my SL 728 have failed twice. It's been used under light conditions. While the wheel is quiet when riding, the seat is squeaky, making total system noise almost unacceptable for me. I'd never get another Nordic Track product.

NordicTrack SL 728
5 Star Review   By member wengelken - Jul 6, 2006

Strengths: Everything worked right out of the box. The NordicTrack SL 728 has a strong frame but is not too heavy. Easy to move around with roller blade wheels, etc. Very comfortable, good controls, stable.

Weakness: None really, although the foot pads could be just a little larger (longer). The left pedal bolt problem mentioned by another reviewer is corrected by NordicTrack on this machine (build April 2006).

Sears has a special on this recumbent bike which made it a steal at $399.99 (through July 29, 2006). Since Consumers Report has it essentially equal to the Schwinn 213 in rating, as a best buy; it was easy saving the $170. Besides even though the Sears NordicTrack SL 728 display model was poorly assembled and somewhat used (abused?), we could still see advantages over the Schwinn; especially the seating. With Sears great 90-day return policy what the heck, right, with that kind of savings? Well, my assembly was per NordicTrack instructions and apparently the latest iteration (build) helped also. What a difference. Assembly is straight forward and not too difficult (note: the blue material on the bolts is thread-lock material which helps keep the bolt from coming loose). Nice bike, solid product and really comfortable while exercising.

Left Pedal Falls off (Design Flaw)
2 Star Review   By member KalBoris - May 26, 2006

Strengths: Nice Bike

Weakness: Left Pedal Falls off after week of use.

This bike has an annoying design flaw with the left pedal. The bolt attaching the left pedal to the bike is right threaded instead of left threaded (as most bikes have), this flaw causes the left pedal to fall off about once a week. Nordic Track has covered this design flaw with a note in the owner’s manual that says to tighten the pedals once a week. So, if you don’t mind breaking out the socket set to re-attach the left pedal once a week it is a good bike.

Nordic Track SL 728
1 Star Review

Strengths: Price

Weakness: This is the second NordicTrack recumbent bike I have owned. The first one died when the clutch assembly failed after about 1,500 miles. The SL728 only made it 230 miles before the clutch went.

NordicTrack service is very difficult to deal with. I am getting a different make. The problem appears to be products that are produced by ICON ID a manufacturing company located in China.
