emergency light
5 Star Review   By Bernie on Home Depot - Jan 5, 2013

I have this same lantern, and use it when ever a storm is coming. Plug into the outlet it recharges, and when the power gos out we have light. This was the case when Sandy hit the power went out and the light came on in the middle of the night, and the night light feature stayed on all night. Bottom line I purchased 2 of these lanterns for Christmas presents on request from mother in law who was at our house when the lights went out. There is no way that she will stay in the dark.

Requires a lot of fiddling!
3 Star Review   By Panda on Home Depot - Sep 6, 2011

Not only did I have to plug this lantern in to charge it up, but the instructions said to discharge it fully and recharge it at least three times before trusting it to function fully off the power cord. In process of doing that the bulb developed a black shadow at the bottom and the full power became no brighter than the low power. I think the bulb needs replacing. I like the nightlight feature and the idea that even if the lantern is not charged that when the house power goes off at least the LED nightlight feature will work. However Coleman's regular 8-D battery-operated lantern is a lot simpler to use: drop the batteries in and simply turn it on when needed. If the batteries deplete with sitting I have extra batteries to replace them. Much simpler. I'll probably buy and new bulb and keep this rechargeable lantern, but I am disappointed. I have another Coleman lantern that I have had for over 20 years, and only had to replace the battery one time and only had to replace the light bulbs once. What happened to it? The switch needs to be repaired (and I'll probably get the new switch). I love my Coleman lanterns. Sure wish this one lived up to my anticipation.

Strengths: very long lasting Rechargeable Battery, 3 different settings, very bright, perfect light and night light

I can not say enough good things about this light. We bought it right before we were going to head back to our house after mandatory evacuations for Hurricane Ike. We knew we had no electricity and weren't sure how long we'd be without. (8 days total if you're curious.) This light was a complete lifesaver! I'm an adult, but am absolutely terrified of the dark. This light was PERFECT. When the sun would start to go down, we'd put it on the medium setting. It was very bright and lit an entire room for hours with no problems. After using it to light the room on medium, we used it on the night light setting for 8+ hours while we slept. We charged it (at a friends or you can get an a/c inverter for your car) for a few hours each day and not once did it threaten to go out on us. We could see absolutely no difference between the high and medium setting so I recommend keeping it on medium since the battery is supposed to last 3 hours longer. This light is an absolute must have for campers and those that may go without electricity for any period of time.
