Know what you are getting!
2 Star Review

Strengths: Wheels, Kenda tires, frame (with one caveat)

Weakness: Brakes, Freewheel hub, rear brake bridge height.

First off, know what you're getting: an x-mart bike at an x-mart price. Out of the box-- and properly adjusted, it rides pretty nice. But there are a lot of compromises to keep the bike at it's under $200 selling price (read: the lowliest of the low and he crappiest of the crap).1) The inclusion of RevoTwist shifers instead of integrated brake shifters (STI, Ergo, DoubleTap) as seen on modern road bikes. Grip shifters are made to go on flat bars, not road bars, So the bar is actually cut in half, shifters slid on, and the two bar halves are bolted back together. And the shifters take up space on the bar that could be used for hand placement, light(s), computer. Cost to upgrade / replace: $103.50 (Shimano ST-2203 + FD-2203 + cables and housing)2) Freewheels are fine on narrow spaced dropouts like fixed gear and track bikes, but on a 135mm rear spacing? No, and hell no. Even with the solid axles, expect any rider around 220 or more will bend the axle. Otherwise, the wheelset it self is fairly sturdy, just the rear hub sucks. Ideally, though you'd like to have no wider than a 15mm rim on a road bike, not the 19mm rim thats on here now. Otherwise the smallest tire (700x28c) that can safely fit on a 19mm rim BARELY clears the calipers in removing / installing the wheel. Cost to upgrade / replace: $110 (135mm spaced rear wheel + Shimano 7/8 speed compatible cassette)3)Single pivot nutted brake calipers are hard pressed to quickly stop a 30+ lb bike and rider. And frankly even after changing the pads to good ones, they still don't stop the bike. Ideally you would replace these with proper dual pivot calipers, but the front fork takes a short reach caliper (39-49mm) and the rear takes a medium reach caliper (47-57mm). . and nutted calipers are getting harder and harder to find. You CAN ream the mounting side holes from 1/4 to 8mm to match the recessed nut diameter on proper, modern brakes in about 15 minutes with a 5/16 bit and vise grips. Reah on the levers kinda sucks too unless you have XL hands. Cost to upgrade replace: $50 (calipers + cables and housing)So, after all that $263 plus the 150 initial purchase. . .$413. . . well, that makes the Denali PRO or LTD a much better buy overall.. . although still each have some wonkiness inherent in the shared design.

GMS Denali Bike
4 Star Review

Strengths: dollars, dollars, dollars baby

Weakness: brake pads and seat

ive had the bike for a few months now and it has been a great investment. i live in san francisco and there are a lot of hills and the bike has performed great. i had to replace the brakes as the stock brakes are very poor at medium speeds (new brakes cost me 30.00 dollars). also, i added a 15.00 dollar seat cushion as the stock seat was uncomfortable. to sum up: if your looking for a bicycle and not a rocket ship with blah blah blah accessories on it than the GMC Denali at walmart for 139.00 dollars will do you just fine.

Denali's Rock
5 Star Review   By member Rexskywalker - Apr 7, 2009

Strengths: Aero Frame grip shifters 80psi 700x28 tires Aero Wheels laser light cornering

Weakness: Heavy as the dickens, Drivetrain's suspect

Hey, my man Tarue's rocking a Denali and he's dropping people on every climb. Now he might have slapped some spare parts on his machine like an old Sora Derailleur but never the less. He also has techie skills to dial in his gearing. He's shredding through bike lane trails like a mad goose. He takes no prisoners and accepts any challenges on his GMC. Why you might ask

GMC Denali Road Bike
2 Star Review

Strengths: Frame and forks are nice

Weakness: Seat is not good for long rides, wheels look nice but warp easily, brakes are horrible, Revo shifter is hard to reach, Pops out of gear a lot and pops chain off.

Overall this is a decent bike for a beginner or novice who doesn't have a lot of money. It will take a lot of tinkering and dialing in to be a distance worthy bike. When I bought mine, it came out of the box with a slightly warped front wheel. The Revo grip shifters are difficult to use when riding. The brakes need a lot of fine tuning and the brake handles are kinda in a little high of a position. I cannot reach any of the top 7 gears because the shifter doesnt work correctly and needs to be tuned. When I try and shift into the high gears it pops the chain. The highest gear I can reach is 14, but it still makes a decent ride. Overall I would give this bike a 5 out of 10. It needs a lot of work, but the frame and forks are nice and if you can upgrade the wheels and have the gears tuned it will be a great bike.

Pack of lies
1 Star Review   By member joe95825 - Mar 22, 2007

Strengths: none, not even price in the long run

Weakness: weight, safety-spacificly brakes!, durablity, lake of new parts, mis-leading claims of shimano parts

I bought this bike because it seemed like a good deal last year. I have put about a 500 miles on it. However parts were burning out. The chain is skipping and I couldn't get it tuned. So I took it to a bicycle shop. They told me that the chain has stretched and caused excess wear on the free wheel and chain rings. Also the derailleur pulleys are eroded. The shop said that the parts were not real shimano and are made by a third party who uses the shimano name under contract as a marketing tool. Not a single part is made by a respectable company They told me that to get my bike back to a good operating status would cost about a $100, but I could expect more parts to burn out in another few hundred miles. I only paid $150! They then showed me some really scary things. They squeezed the braeks and rolled the bike forward. The brake calipers started flexing and twisting like they where made of plastic. They then compared it to a bike that they sold and the brake didn’t flex. They then offered to let me test they bike out, something that WalMart would never allow. I picked up their bike and it didn’t weigh anything. There must be 15 lbs between their bike and my mine. When I rode it, everything felt really good. They spent time picking one off the shelf that fit me. I didn’t know that a good company makes about 10 different sizes to match different sized riders. Mine was a one size fits all. When I used the brakes, it was like completely different. The bike actually stopped! I always worried about something like a car or dog getting in my way and not being able to stop. By this time I was really liking the bike shop’s bike, but was worried about the frame breaking. The pulled up the US government web site that list all the safety recalls of consumer product. All of the listings for failures where from bikes like mine. The shop then showed me all the bikes that they where fixing and what was being fixed. It was things like needing the wheels trued after 5 years or a new chain after 15000! miles. They told me that a chain should last thousands of mile and is usually replaced before it stretches enough to harm other parts. They claimed that the bikes they sold would last for decades and I would replace before that because I wanted new technology before the bike was worn out. Needless to say, I figured out that a good bike was cheaper to own in only a few years that a cheap bike. The shop was even nice enough to allow me to put my piece of crap in their garbage. I walked out of there with something that will last for more that 500 miles and they said I could bring it back anytime I wanted if it wasn’t working right and they would tune it for free. They even made me bring it back after the first month to adjust the cable. Way I see it, I threw away money on that crap cycle from Wally World!

PLEASE REMOVE TIRES BEFORE RIDING!
3 Star Review

Strengths: Price and looks, even a decent ride

Weakness: THE WHEELS AND TIRES!

Please remove wheels and tires before riding. The tires are poorly installed on this bike and the tubes -WILL- burst catostrophically upon proper inflation to 80-90psi. They will appear to be fine but mine BOTH blew out (read: exploded) within an hour and a half of inflation. I removed the tires to discover the cause of this and it is due to the many-many-many sharp edges on the inside of the wheel. The liner is poorly installed and 6-10 spoke holes with sharp edges were exposed to the tube directly. They also had very obviously used a metal object (probably a screwdriver) to install the tire, which left DEEP scars on the interior of the aluminum wheel. This caused razor-like edges to cut directly into the tire and tube. Please take the time to properly install the liner (covering the spoke holes) and to file down or cover any sharp points on the sides of the wheel. Failure to do so is dangerous, and will cost you in blown tires and possibly alot worse. Havent had any problems since, the bike holds up great once you've taken care of this little issue.

OK BIKE IF YOU DONT MIND SPENDING A LITTLE MORE CASH
3 Star Review   By member turttle12 - Aug 21, 2006

Strengths: GOOD PRICE

Weakness: TUBES DIDN"T TAKE 80 POUNDS OF AIR. THEY POPPED IN 20 MIN.

THE GMC BIKE IS A GOOD CHEAP BIKE FOR THE AVERAGE PERSON. IVE BEEN RIDEING IT FOR A WEEK NOW. I ALSO INVESTED IN NEW TUBES AND TIRES. I ALSO BOUGHT NEW RIM LINERS THAT PROTECT THE TUBE BETTER. SO IN ALL I IVESTED A LITTLE MORE BUT CAME OUT WITH A BETTER BIKE FOR THE MONEY.

Road Biking the Hard Way
1 Star Review   By member roader - Jul 13, 2006

Strengths: inexpensive- $150.00 looks- beautiful bike

Weakness: derailers-must shift up to go back down chain- jumps, rubs bottom bracket-clunking noises seat-like a rock brakes-weak even after adjustment stickers-fall off stock tubes-both blow within 75 mi

Bought this bike because I was unsure if I wanted to road bike or not. It taught me how to ride the hard way. It's in the shop an average of 1-2x monthly. The derailleurs never seem to work right. Need to shift up to bring gear back down. Other times need to shift down to go up. Brakes are weak. Seat is hard as a rock. Ride is uncomfortable even with proper fitting. Stock tubes blew out within 75 miles. Bottom bracket makes clunking noises. Shifting casing cracked. Chain jumps and causes legs to fly up in air. Doesn't always allow use of every gear-sometimes they work other times not. Overall, this bike showed me that it's not a good idea to go cheap when you're road bike shopping. This will be the last cheap bike that i buy.

GMC Denali Road Bike
4 Star Review   By member twistedtrainer - May 2, 2006

Strengths: Great bang for the buck. A good solid road bike that can take a few spills and live to tell about it, I've fell a few times in competition and was able to keep going, while others weren't.

Weakness: It is a little heavier than I like, It could benefit from an easy off front tire.

I have had a Denali road bike for over a year and I have rode in a few competitions with it, Its a good beginner road bike, with decent brakes and great shifting due to the grip shifters. You can't beat the price.

Strengths: Price

Weakness: Brakes hard to reach when shifting Gears 48 big 14 small gear (52 and 12 would be better) Weight 29 pounds G M C sticker on the side

1 Price (133 dollars with a 10% discount for a scratch) 2 Shimano (not there best shifters but they worked great) 3 Walmart (90 days to return) 4 Kent (Life time frame warranty and 1 year parts) I have had this bike for 2 weeks and put 150 miles on it and have had no trouble with it at all. I did put different brake levers and a different seat on it.

I love my denali
5 Star Review   By member SPEEDYHENRY - Feb 27, 2006

Strengths: as soon as i sat on my denali bike I could Feel it was right for me.The seat felt good; The height was Proper;and it glided across the Parking lot.I look to Using my Denali bike in Road Ralley events.

Weakness: Being an avid road ralley event Grupie; The Denali Bike Could be a bit Lighter ; But I do Rember a Huffy Racing Bike where the frame broke Because it was to Lite;So there Is a "Happy Medium" to weight.

The Denali is a fine bike I plan to show that "you don;t have to have a 3000.00 dollar bike to compete with with other cyclist.I plan to go to Europe with the "denali Bike";and Compete and enjoy the "LA- Tour _DE France.Events; Also Touring Paris will be a joy.I have many Relatives in the "Paris "and La Tukie areas. I will be training; to reach an Endurance of sixty miles. "move over boy;s "here I Come".
