Windows98SE
5 Star Review

Strengths: OEM

Weakness: Older product, but what I needed for my machine.

I looked all over the web for this software and this was the most reasonably priced I could find. It worked great for my machine, and I was very pleased with the delivery. Nice transaction.

4 Star Review

Strengths: Win98SE is a sturdy and fast OS. Better for gaming in my opinion as less system resources are used up in the background.

Weakness: You need to make a bootdisc to install Win98SE. I don't have a floppy drive like many people nowadays. I had to get a workaround made. Also WinXp is better looking on th interface than Win98SE, but in gaming the desktop doesn't mean much.

This OS is good for my needs of gaming, as I mentioned in the strengths of Win98SE. It is generally a utility kind of OS nowadays, not the best looks but it works good enough. Problem is Win98SE isn't supported at all anymore. I hope it gets revived into a minimalist windows OS sold by Micro$oft.

better than 98+
4 Star Review   By member wd30 - May 24, 2007

Strengths: Installed on an old computer with a 120Mhz processer and 64 mb of ram. The sound card drivers were built in to this OS so I didn't need to look for them. Works very well.

Weakness: Sometimes you might need the original OS disc to install drivers for different add-ons like an ethernet card. Also, IE7 will not run on this OS, IE6 connects to the net though.

Made a ten year old machine useful again. I would buy again. The machine doesn't have a dvd or usb ports so I can't comment how well they work with 98.

Win 98 SE
3 Star Review   By member cecileoldham - May 20, 2007

Strengths: Win 98 has been a pretty good operating system and it is fairly stable.

Weakness: It has become obsolete and is no longer supported by Microsoft

I have an older laptop that will run with Win98, but probably not anything newer. I got the Win 98 so that I was running on a legal version that could be registered to me. I haven't been able to get a PC card to work that has USB ports in it. I thought the Win 98 would allow me to get the PC card to work. The only other thing is that it is the computer, NOT the Win 98 that is the problem.

Windows 98 SE (Full Product).
3 Star Review   By member Tatrome - May 16, 2007

Strengths: Upgrade from W95

Weakness: No longer supported

I have an aging laptop with w95 OS that is used to interface with the onboard computer of vehicles ( OBD II ). I wanted to add wireless and USB adaptors to it. The latest operating system the laptop could handle is W98se. W98se is obsolete but for this old laptop the W98SE OS was 100% for my intended use.

Windows 98SE Operating System
2 Star Review   By member mzlizzy - Apr 21, 2007

Strengths: Item shipped and received as stated.

Weakness: No longer supported.

Cannot install this OS by CD-ROM only; it requires an 'A' drive floppy Start-up Disk to install. If you've wiped your hard-drive before install, you may need a graphics driver. Again, it is not supported. A null purchase. Buy XP at least; it will install itself on your CD-ROM and the drivers needed.

WIN98SE
4 Star Review   By member Erenagh - Dec 9, 2006

Strengths: Stable - rarely crashes

Weakness: No longer supported or used by many applications

My pc came with WIN98SE installed but without the CD-ROM. Installing certain hardware required the CD-ROM despite specifying that I had the necessary drivers in another location. All I had to do was to have the CD-ROM in one tray for the installation to proceed, after agreeing that the drivers that I wanted to install were elsewhere. Blame Microsoft, I guess. The supplier was reasonable in pricing and prompt in delivery. IF I finally give in and upgrade to XP or Vista, I will use this vendor again.

I purchased the program to correct a problem with my monitors but it did not solve my problem. The computer store had installed the program when I had my system upgraded and they told me to reload the program after a power supply failure. It did not correct the problem.

Microsoft Windows 98 SE
5 Star Review   By member Wildcard500 - Sep 30, 2006

Strengths: Good layout, design, and lot more

Weakness: no more windows updates, for 98 sadly

I love windows 98 SE the way it Looks. I use windows 98 SE for years and it was great, but when i built a new PC, i had to upgrade to XP-PRO because of certain new technology that were only available in XP, BUT I hated the way XP looks When i first Built my PC it had a AMD 64 Bit Atholn 3500 CPU, a 120 GB hard drive. i tried to use windows 98 SE in this computer because, i like the way it looked, but after i had every thing working it would take 5 minute for windows 98 SE to boot, the PC up. I sadly bout a copy of Window XP-Pro, installed it, and then the PC would boot up in 34 second a lot faster because it had the newest technology, that worked with my 64 Bit CPU better and the NTFS format, but i still did not like the XP look, so i started doing a lot of changes to make me happy, here is what i did. 1. Turned on classic looks 2. Turned on classic folder layout 3. Switch To Classic Start Menu 4. Turn Off restore point and speed the computer up 5. Turn Off Indexing 6. Disable send Error Reporting 7. Turn Off Remote Assistance 8. Don't Hibernate 9. Disable desktop cleanup wizard every 60 days 10. Turn video setting to best performance 11. Using PowerToys TweakUI 12. Then Extracted all of my windows 98 SE desk top icons, and put them in my new computer with XP-RPO 13. turned off AutoComplete 14. turned on Use Classic Explorer 15. now i go to windows updates on the internet and get all of the updates 16. install ALL other drivers i need. Last Thing now i use the Back up software, i bout called Acronis True image 9 and make a Full back copy of my hard drive to a DVD, so i do not have to ever do all of the stuff above ever again. I am now very happy with windows XP-PRO, it looks liked windows 98 SE, after i am done with it, but it is really XP-PRO and has all of the latest drivers, updates, and technology.

Strengths: very good price

not buggy much better then windows me. honest store with good prices. would buy from them again. Windows 98SE is not a bootable disk so you will need to download a boot image from the internet. I have a floppy so it was no trouble.

4 Star Review   By member PortLman - Sep 9, 2005

Strengths: Relatively low price, reliability, ease of use.

Weakness: Does not work with some high-end programs

Windoes 98 is a good program for the average user who is low on cash and doesn't need to run high-end applications, like the $1,500 Photoshop Pro or similar programs.

5 Star Review   By member jerry23 - Dec 20, 2003

Strengths: Easy to use, easy to own.No Headaches.

Weakness: Official support will close January 2004

It is hard to imagine an OS easier to use.Had XP Pro and 98Se on dual boot, XP w/out all fluff (best performance settings, classic desktop). All benchmarking software and sites put 98SE 20% to 50% ahead of XP Pro.Video benchmarks no matter what chipset,Nvidia or ATI 100 % Better. Drivers issue-there is no issue. All drivers are readily available on manufacturers websites. Great product. I wish Redmont stopped going backwards and come up with something better than XP.Instead of making us buy more memory, more powerfull processors, larger drives and Broadband- a MUST for XP users.have you cheked the sizes of those SP's and hotfixes lately! The only OS by Redmont w/out SP's is 98SE. Great job!

Strengths: Very Stable on Good PC hardware, easy to use and learn,Compatible with all the Dos\Windows software i've used including windows 3.1

Weakness: I used to get the blue screen of death very often on my first pc But it was much better when I installed it on my brand new machine

After one year using Win 98 I upgraded the machine to windows me to see if it would be better but i was wrong. The blue screen was more frecuent an I lost the USB support for some reason I ended up downgrading back to win98 until a power failure blew my computer's power supply then I got a brand new pc with winXP pre installed and made it dual boot with win 98 and I can tell they make a powerfull combination since WinXP does not support many old programs(games,16 bit apps, etc) My PC configuration (Included as a reference) Old Machine amd athlon 500mhz sis 530 video card cirrus logic modem lucent usb card avance logic audio card w/sound blaster support new machine intel celeron 900mhz intel 810 video AGP 4mb, NVIDIA tnt 32mb PCI intel ac97 sound card pc tel hsp56mr modem (driver at www.geocities.com/emac...) on board paralel, usb, etc

Strengths: good gaming system, if you prepare it right it never crashes, easy to teach people on, loves lan cards, doesn't have any hardware problems i have found at all.

Weakness: You have to buy other programs to make it secure. So noone hacks you.

I have had this os for 2 years i have tried linux, win3.1,win95,win98,win98se,winnt4.0,win2k,winxp, and unix. Out of all of these the cheapest and best os in my opinion is win98 SE. P.S. Cheapest meaning that all of the programs you have to buy to get it running secure and smooth.

Strengths: Work with most software.

Weakness: Crash , crash, and crash.

Alright, it's easy to use, I used to love it and stuck with it for almost 2 years, soon, I got win xp, I just realized that I waste my time by the fear of changing. Anyway, I still get my old laptop run with this os, it require less space on harddrive and compatible with my old compaq. Anyway, this is my first os I own.

Strengths: Full compatibility with most sofware and hardware available. allows run the games and software based in DOS.

Weakness: Potential crash. a bit of inestability in the instalation (of itself and other software)

when I install it, in a clean instalation it crashed. I'd format and install for times and still with the instalation finished it crashed. But when I'd unloaded and installed the patches of windows update it stop the crashes. now it is much stable. now I run games (DOS and Windows based), DVD, work properly with CAD software, and common aplications (include Beta sofware).

Strengths: Windows 98 or 98SE are both good, SE being a little better usb and crash wise. 98 will run almost everything out there. Very good for Inexperienced users, and those that must use it.

Weakness: It crashes often if you install and uninstall a lot of software or try to use beta's which is understandable. It is better than Win ME or XP. They both have serious flaws. Security and compatibility.

Win 2000 is the best by far right now, with Win 98 in second. Me is Awful, XP is to. They are both a waste of money! Linux is a good 3rd choice if you want to learn a new Free operating system, and not be handcuffed totally to Windows.

5 Star Review   By member ozzio - Mar 10, 2002

Strengths: It's a workhorse - there's no major glitches for me with this

Weakness: None that I know of - maybe weak usb?

Well, I started off on win95, and used that right up till 2000, when stuff like usb came out bigtime. My old P200 went into office use, and my new 750's came online. I got hold of winME, and found on both new machines, the ME was crashing, hanging, freezing, rebooting, scrabling info, ye gods. So I went out and bought win2000. This was great on one of the pair - but it refused to even load on the other. So I had spare copies of windows that didn't work. This cost me dearly. In the end, after a friend looked at my sytems he said, trashcan the ME, it's a ...cough. Keep the 2000 on the machine that works, it's good. Get yourself 98SE, and if you get any flakes off these machines, use SE from now on. You can't afford to loose wages like this. So I went back to 98SE, it works on everything and I don't get crashes. I got a pile of other windows stuff here, I can't even give it away. I wrote DANGER on the ME box. LOL But I SWEAR BY 98SE.

Strengths: WIN98SE is the "Best OS" out there in the marketplace. It's very reliable and compatible with most software and hardware. I've tried Win95, Win NT, Win ME and they are nothing compared to WIN98SE.

Weakness: None! To have your computer running a peak performance just download the service pack and update your drivers.

I haven't tried Win XP yet but I already found some bugs on it like the shutdown trouble among others. WinME came out with more bugs in six months than what Win98SE did ever. Win98SE is the best. I hope Windows could do a upgrade to the OS. Thanks!

2 Star Review   By member Hadesdarklord - Feb 25, 2002

Strengths: Looks cool (if you are a 11yr old)

Weakness: 1.) Its Microsoft 2.) It does not perform well at all. 3.) Most software either works poorly, or not at all under XP

I have read many places where "XP is better for Gaming" That is a bald faced lie. It sucks. I installed it on my new DIY computer I just built. An ABIT K7RA, Athlon XP1700+, and an NVidia GeForce 2 MX400. I was looking forward to GREAT Performance. Boy, was I disappointed. The Drivers for the NVidia included with the XP CD were awful. They did not support OpenGL. The programs would not run. I downloaded the updated drivers from the NVidia website and installed them. Now the games would run, but not very well. Two boxes side by side, a P3 933 / Radeon 7000 and the AMD 1.47 / NVidia, each running the SAME PROGRAM, and the P3 box beat the crap out of the AMD box. Badly. So, after several days of frustration trying to get XP to work, I low-level formatted the HDD, and installed Win 98SE. I had up to date drivers from the various sites, and installed DirectX 8.1 WOW!!! The Improvement!!!! From a lack-luster machine not even scratching its potential to a MONSTER GAME MACHINE!! So, the statement that XP is better than 98SE for games is an outright lie. Please stop saying it.

Strengths: It runs most of the time. This best OS is you have a slow computer, such as a 266mhz with 32MB of Ram.

Weakness: Its can be slow and it will crash

Please if you have a slow computer get this. If you have a newer pc..over 500mhz with more than 64MB Ram - get XP. It will make all of us pc techs alot happier.

Strengths: Great hardware compatability. A huge ammount of software is avalable for it...

Weakness: Slow performance, slow boot-up, buggy, very insucre to hacker attacks and viruses... not very advance technically. Way to expensive...

Windows 98 SE has major advantages over other operating systems, such as hardware and software compatibility. Basiclly any application will run on it and almost any piece of hardware will work with it. However, Windows 98 SE is slow, buggy, and insecure. It is also expensive. For me, the disadvantges out way the disadvantages. Overall, it's not worth the 90 or 100 dollars unless you have to have it.
