Microsoft Windows 7 | Home Premium Upgrade
4 Star Review  productwiki.com - Oct 21, 2009

Windows 7 (formerly codenamed Blackcomb and Vienna)is the current version of Microsoft Windows and the successor to Windows Vista. Microsoft has stated that it is "scoping Windows 7 development to a three-year timeframe", and that "the specific release date will ultimately be determined by meeting the quality bar." The first public beta was released to the public on January 9th, 2009 and will expire August 1st, 2009, with a downloadable ISO available to the first 2.5 million people. The operating system was finally made available to the public on October 22nd 2009 ... PROS: (1) Improved memory management takes up less RAM than Vista (2) Revamped taskbar that can combine running programs and hide labels - 3 options how it is done (3) Better supported 64-bit architecture (4) Able to change UAC security (rather than ON / OFF in Vista) (5) Allows you to turn off fundamental Windows features such as Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer ... CONS: (1) This is what Vista should have been, and we will get to pay for an upgrade (2) Seriously overpriced (3) still #1 targeted os for viruses/trojans/phishers (4) Abilioty to virtualise applications in XP environment available only on Professional and Ultimate edition

Stable, smooth, and highly polished
5 Star Review   By lorelai on HP - Nov 1, 2012

Strong design and Microsoft don't always go together, but they do in Windows 7. Users might take a while to get used to the new taskbar and Aero Peek, but they're a pleasure to use.

A bit of improvement from Vista
3 Star Review   By WyldKat64 on HP - May 31, 2012

Purchased the upgrade on recommendation from HP Technical Support. I do not find any performance improvements. I do like the "window swithcher" feature which is basically the old ALT TAB keystroke.

HP Media Center Edition Windows XP to Windows 7
4 Star Review   By pcRazor on HP - Mar 1, 2012

Okay first off this computer is a 2005 edition. And has been rock solid. But since I had major issues with a virus and trying to install Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 it's been a nightmare. New Microsoft office would not install no matter how hard the Microsoft tech tried. So I was forced to spend more money (on a very tight budget, but can't live w/o my computer) on upgrade Windows 7 since HP no longer had installation discs. Now understand these are not the same as system recovery CD-ROM discs. Which would have destroyed all my programs and data to date. Once I got the software the installation to me was a snap. Comes with 32-bit and 64-bit and all depends on your computer's hardware. Once the installation was computer I knew my hard disc drive would need to be upgraded. The ONLY saving grace here was the external 500gb 3.0 USB hard disc drive include backup and recovery software. Once I created a bootable CD-Rom and backup all my date to said HDD then it was only a matter of making the conversion. Which thank goodness all when as planned and worked out great in the end.

This is REALLY GREAT software, however...
5 Star Review   By mskarenlynn07 on HP - Feb 25, 2012

I had purchased this paritcular software to upgrade the Microsoft Windows 7 Starter operating platform in a little "netbook" computer to the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium operating platform. This DID NOT work, as you simply CANNOT use this particular "upgrade" software to upgrade a Microsoft Windows 7 Starter operating platform. On the other hand, this particular "upgrade" software can only be used to upgrade Microsoft Windows VISTA operating platforms to the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium operating platform. ...Because of this, unfortunately, I had to send this particular software back to Hewlett-Packard (HP) today, 02/24/2012, because that is who I bought it from in the first place. ...I have used this particular software before, to upgrade a Microsoft Windows VISTA operating platform to the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium operating platform --- and, in that case, YES, it DID work just great!!!

Problems installing Windows 7
4 Star Review   By pdxhiker on HP - Feb 24, 2012

Though there was vague advice to back up programs and files, while installing W7 I mistakenly chose Custom. This wiped my programs and files from my hard disk. Many hours spent restoring files and programs. Tech support helpful, but took many hours, several calls, etc. Microsoft should install a warning on Windows 7 software that if one clicks Custom rather than picking "Upgrade" the hard disk will be wiped clean.

Glad I did it. Works great, howerver........
5 Star Review   By B4Ugo on HP - Jan 18, 2012

This upgrade from Win Vista went smoothly and I have had no problems with the 64bit version. I did this upgrade after a 'Recovery' issue. After running WIN 7 Upgrade Advisory there was a report of a known issue with WIN Vista's Hardware Diagnostic Tool's software. The suggestion was to uninstall the Tool, Install WIN 7 and then reinstall the Diagnostic Tool. This is impossible because WIN 7 can not accept the software from an upgade. If WIN 7 was purchased with the computer it would have the Diagnostic Tool, but it's not possible to reinstall it after an upgrade as told to me by HP Support. One can use 'F9' on reboot to use WIN 7's 3-step diagnostics. I miss HP's Diagnostic Tool because it was so thorough and checked dozens of functions including the video card.

2 Star Review   By tshot on HP - Jan 18, 2012

not happy with Windows 7. it is not what it is built up to be. not an improvement over Vista. just another way to make $$$$ off the consumer. I still have issues with the operating system that I was promised would disapeer if I upgraded to 7. IMO save your money stick with what you already have!

Tech Support Inconsistent on Price
1 Star Review   By InsideOut1206 on HP - Aug 20, 2011

Tech Support gave inconsistant prices for product varying from $89.95 to $119.95. Had to purchase Recovery disc for Vista first. Can't get a Windows screen after Recovery disc was installed. Don't want to spend that kind of money if the product is not going to work on my computer.

5 Star Review   By REH703 on HP - Jul 28, 2011

The response time from the time I select print on my laptop until the Officejet printer responds is almost immediate with Windows 7 in contrast to Windows Vista which takes a noticeable number of seconds.

5 Star Review   By member AZGhosthawkx - Mar 15, 2011

Strengths: Quick, intuitive and really easy to use.

Weakness: Uses a lot of ram, make sure you meet the system requirements before installing.

I have been waiting for a clean version of Windows for long time. This version has everything I need.. Its also really good at managing resources when you play games.

Windows 7 Home Premium
5 Star Review   By HPTechDude256 on HP - Feb 16, 2011

Windows 7 is right for home and buisness. It is the most best colors of icons, pictures, and more! I can believe that Windows 8 Home/Buisness would be 20x improved to Windows 7. But since Microsoft hasn't brought Windows 8 to the market, then Windows 7 takes the lead.

UP Grades
5 Star Review

Strengths: Poor

Weakness: Won't work on some software

I tried long ago to run a up grade, found it was cheap way to install new software, but paid the price when software would not run, Microsoft said it was Sony's problem an Sony's said it was Microsoft blame, so I learn from this that never ever use a Up Grade of anything, but always go for the Full Version as I had to in the end do this, no one gave me a refund on the Up Grade, an I lost out the money I had paid, Go for the Full Version of any program, as the Up Grades never ever do work with some programs.

No Drivers
3 Star Review

Strengths: Nice Speed

Weakness: see below

I just got a new computer with windows 7. Unfortunately I am unable to use my 5 year old printer (cost $3000) nor my Epson scanner nor my Niken Coolscan (cost $2000 used) because those companies do not plan to make drivers so they can be used with windows 7. They would love for me to buy all new printers etc. So now I have hooked up my old computer to my new computer to use the printers and scanners I am doing this by way of a KVM switch. So don't rush to get windows 7. Also my older epson 1200 now does not work so have to buy a new smaller printer!!!!

Microsoft Windows 7
3 Star Review   By member ctelford - Jan 1, 2010

Strengths: It works better than Vista

Weakness: It's still Windows and forces you to purchase updated software to run on it.

I was forced to purchase Windows 7 because the Microsoft techs in India could not help me fix Vista. Microsoft is running a real racket. Someday maybe they will wake up and produce a product that will run universally.
