Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle for Europe
4 Star Review  GameZone - Nov 7, 2002

I have to say, I wanted this to be good. Despite my anticipation, I had to remain neutral and let the game unfold and reveal it's grandeur. I was not disappointed. Microsoft has returned to the (un)friendly skies in their third, and best, Combat Simulator offering. If you haven't tried one from this series, the time to start is now. Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle for Europe is the best flight Sim that I have played from Microsoft. I have played the non-combat types, but they do not compare to the grit and tension of flying against foes that will shoot you out of the sky. It was hard enough to dodge stationary objects (skyscrapers can be sneaky!!), but now you are dealing with enemies that will strafe you out of the sky if you do not fly exceptionally.

The old runaround
1 Star Review

Weakness: all

There's nothing new about Microsoft avoiding the issues and passing the buck when it comes to their games or o.s.'s. CFS1 was marvelous, CFS2 was a 5 out of 10 and now this CFS3 is horrible.

Combat Flight Sim 3
4 Star Review

Strengths: Great graphics. Works with Windows Vista and have not had a problem. Lots of action and easy in rookie mode.

Weakness: Outside views would be a nice addition ... like the other MS flight sims. Pretty much locked into views from the cockpit.

Have not expreienced the problems others have mentioned. Loaded easy and flying just fine with no lock ups. Have not needed to seek support. Good variation in planes and locations.

5 Star Review   By member SmallDrunkMonkey - Jan 19, 2007

I love Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle for Europe! This was an amazing deal, I would have paid more at a local store like (Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, etc.) the process was very easy and a great bargain. Delivered product in a very timely manner--excellent service, great recommendation to buy from this vendor.

Flight Sim X
4 Star Review

Strengths: Overall a great flight sim.

Weakness: Some glitches in the scenery, but these are minor and seldom detract from the game.

For those of you that have a 64 bit processor, you might be in for some trouble when trying to load this game. You will be instructed to load the system pack II. I did have the system pack II??? Calling Microsoft Support was "A JOKE." I got passed off from person to person for over two hours. Finally got sent to "tech support" and was told that I would have to pay a one time fee of ~$240.00 + for continued support. I took my computer back to the company that made it and they too had problems with Microsoft. Finally, they had to reformat my computer and reload all the software to get it to work. Microsoft support for flight sim problems is a real let down. Can't you afford to pay for some reliable tech help Mr. Gates?

Strengths: Some graphics

Weakness: Everything

Thought this would be a worthy successor to my generally wonderful but no longer usable Jane's "WWII Fighters". Hardly. Target ID and acquisition are very cumbersome. No target view. Half the keyboard buttons don't work. Even after installing patches and updates, it still sucks wind.

Strengths: well, it allows you to fly bombers and jets in this one

Weakness: Demanding system requirements, extremely difficult to shoot at things, graphics aren't all that great.

After enjoying cfs and cfs2 I was very excitied about getting this sim. Why with the ability to change the outcome of the war sounded like the best thing released. It wasn't. First, the requirements the Micrsoft lists are nowhere near what it actually has to be. I installed this on a PIII w/ 320MB RAM and a 64MB Radeon 7000. I had to turn EVERYTHING down and off to run it. As a result the graphics were crappy (graphics are necessary in simulators). Being able to run smoothly (except for the huge waiting times) I decided to do a dogfight test. Shooting is almost impossible because they set the sights too low. This really pissed me off so I stuffed it in the closet. A year later I built my new computer so I figured "Let's try it again." With my new pc (Sempron 3400+ 1GB RAM 6200 w/ 128MB GPU) the loading times had vanished and I was able to set it on 5 with 1024x768x32. The ony thing that improved (from 800x600x16) was the look of the aircraft and pilot & you obviously can't look at them when you're flying. I didn't really find the ground all that detailed either. The gameplay still sucked as usual. Conclusion: This is a real dissapointment to the cfs line.

Weakness: Locks up, shutsdown, not enough air-to-air combat, somewhat repititous & boring

The absolute worst customer support I have ever encountered with MicroSoft. Mention you are calling about CFS-3 and you can almost hear the tech hollering "duck here comes another one", I spent several hours on the phone with MicroSoft techs and in the end they referred me to the PC manufacturer...spent an hour on the phone with them and they ended up referring me right back to MS. (I might add this was a brand new, right-out-of-the box P4, WinXP,2.5g,512mgDDR, 64mg video card) system. I finally got the bloody thing installed and running...much to my disappointment in the graphics and "action"...I greatly prefer CFS-1 as well as CFS-2. Now the CFS-3 CD sits on a shelf gathering dust. Not worth the $$$ nor the hassle.

Strengths: Great Graphics, Great effects. Turn on the surround sound and you are there!!

Weakness: Ocassionally does lock up, not really frustrating, just close and reopen.

I really like this sim, graphics are excellent, very realistic. I have not flown all of the planes, but options paints and custom murals for planes is nice touch. They did not forget any details. empty cases dump when machine guns fired, excellent clouds and fire, smoke. Considering all other WWII Sims, this is the best and most real. It is even fun to get shoot down, nothing like seeing the tracers pass by!! Try it, you will like it!!

Weakness: This game was a letdown. The screen layout is poor, it constantly displays error messages that various fonts are not found, and game play is disapointing. Certainly a move in the wrong direction.

I found the customer support for this game to be ridiculously poor. I was put on hold for over 30 minutes several times, never got a straight answer, told to contact the manufacturer of my PC, and found that no patch for this game existed. It seems that the people in customer support know less about computers than I do and I don't know a lot. In the future, I will wait to read the reviews before buying from this manufacturer. Lastly, game options also are disapointing at best.

Weakness: the whole thing

This game is one of the worst I have seen and I have seen many.First if you can get the game to play then you can't get it to fly or change the screen resolution's time you click ok or cancel it locks up.I don't really know anything good about the game except it has good ground scenery.I have asked for support from the maker but I JUST KEEP GETTING THE RUN AROUND.The expense is not worth it.This company has cfs which is great, then it comes out with cfs2 which is a bummer and then the big one cfs3,what a bomb.If it was a automobile it would have a recall for performance.
