The Sims Vacation
5 Star Review  GameZone - Apr 4, 2002

Hey, Sim fans! The folks at Maxis and Electronic Arts have been paying attention to all those suggestions you have made since The Sims was first released and the proof can be found in The Sims: Vacation, the newest expansion to this ever-increasingly popular game series. It should be noted right up front that you only need to have the original game installed to add this expansion pack. Additionally, many of the items that were added in other expansion packs have now become available in this new expansion. With The Sims: Vacation expansion, you will find that the vacation of your dreams is just a phone call away! Simply call a cab to go on vacation and for a mere $500 a shuttle will arrive to whisk you away to the boat waiting to take you to Vacation Island! The view from the boat gives you a glimpse of all that awaits you on the island.

Sims Vacation
4 Star Review  IGN.com - Apr 8, 2002

I remember when Myst used to dominate the sales charts. Its initial success was understandable, because its graphics were good for its time and it was one of the first games to ever come out on CD-ROM. But as time went on, as the whole industry shifted to CDs, Myst remained the number one selling computer game month after month, year after year, in defiance of all logic and common sense. This used to make me quite angry, because beneath all its gaudy makeup, it was still just another a crappy adventure game with a piss-poor game mechanic and such a monumentally turgid design that it actually expected players to solve combination locks in order to advance to the next pre-rendered screen. What next...I should fill out some tax forms for you too? Thank goodness graphic adventures are nearly dead. In my view, those things weren't even games.

Strengths: None that I can think of.

Weakness: When it came out, it ran $40 and didn't even offer all it's vacation options (cruise part is unaccessible). It's basically a glorified "Downtown" with 3 types of spots (beach, camping & snowlodge).

I was excited to get it because I had grown bored with the previous expansion by the time it came out but that enthusiasm faded fast. I was greatly disappointed by what little had been offered for the price. In earlier versions, the Downtown section was offered along with other features. In this version, 3 types of trips are it, that's all that is offered (beach but you can't go in the water, snowlodge but you can't ski, camping but you don't cook on the campfire & you can rent a fishing rod but can't catch anything, etc.) Doing the same 3 things over and over gets quite monotonous, and fast. There is a cruise ship on the vacation screen but it is not accessible. I read online that it would be the next expansion program but then Unleashed was advertised and there has been no mention of any vacation add-ons since. Besides, after paying $40 for only 3 new spots to play with, I really didn't want to pay another $40 or even $20 for just one feature to be added on that should've been in the original vacation program to begin with.
