Stronghold: Crusader
4 Star Review  GameZone - Oct 3, 2002

If you are familiar with Stronghold or Age of Empires you will have a pretty good idea what this game is about. Set in the distant Arabian Desert, this title combines the aspects of a city builder and a RTS game. Lead a determined group of crusaders, forged by centuries of barbaric conflicts, or wage war against a powerful foreign invader amidst the haze of the desert heat. In short, build a prosperous city, feed the peasants well and tax them moderately while trying to keep your rating up. If you make your people unhappy they will ultimately leave, bringing your economy to a halt.

Stronghold Crusader
4 Star Review  GameSpy - Nov 3, 2002

It's a bit too simple to flatly say that Stronghold: Crusader is better than the original or those who enjoyed Stronghold will love the sequel. This standalone mini-sequel to last year's hit is crammed with additional game options, and may actually convert those who didn't like the original due to its limited variety and puzzle-like scenarios.

Stronghold Crusader
4 Star Review  IGN.com - Oct 8, 2002

If you enjoyed the mighty Stronghold, but want a game with even more substance, then sire, your software is ready. Stronghold is one of those rare games that comes along without any fanfare and ends up being really special even though nobody really expected much from it. However Crusader had a few of us salivating before its release, as the original game was such a promising appetizer.

Strengths: Long campaign trail with 50 scenerios, small historical episode campaigns, scenario creator, variety of units, emcompasses military and economic management

Weakness: Gameplay is really easy or really hard, AI is weak, small playfields, no difficulty setting

Stronghold Crusader is one of two games that make up the Stronghold Series. This game has provided me with countless hours of entertainment. The selection of units is superb, even though they can't be upgraded. This game provides a superb depiction of how a castle has to be run economically and how to defend the castle from attacks. There is just enough micromanagement to make it interesting, but doesn't overwhelm anyone. The shortfalls of this game are not very big, but big enough to keep it from a 5 star rating. One is the lack of a difficulty setting, some of the levels get to be rather hard, if not seemingly impossible. Another is the size of the maps, if you are looking for expansive maps, this isn't the game. Frequently the opposing castles are situated within shooting distance of each other. The third downfall is the AI. It is set to rush the player with two or three waves, and if the player survives the rush for 10 to 15 minutes, they will definitely win the game since the computer then hides in its castle. But, in conclusion, Stronghold Crusader is a great game with the strengths eclipsing the weaknesses.

3 Star Review   By member sgthalka - Mar 14, 2003

Strengths: Launching diseased cattle in catapults. Building/tearing down pretty castles. A fun distraction for Age of Empires II fans.

Weakness: Mechanics of building up your castle estate is stilted. Zoom levels are too rigid -- you're either too up close to manage combat, or you're zoomed out too far and can't see any details.

The gameplay is far from polished ... games just play choppy, easily won or easily lost, with no sense of longevity like a good game of Warcraft III or Age of Empire/Mythology offers. Destroying the CPU is fun though. A better game on paper that in real life. It sounds fun as heck when you read the unit descriptions, but the actual gameplay just falls a little flat.
