They record dozens of albums over the course of a career that lasts for decades. Dennis Brown is one of those singers, a powerhouse reggae vocalist beloved by the Jamaican music community--Bob Marley himself called Brown his favorite singer more than once--who somehow never made the crossover leap into the pop market that Marley, Black Uhuru, and others did. Perhaps the key is that Brown's music, while stunningly crafted, doesn't have the sense of "otherness" that marks the most successful artists.As the title of this 2000 release indicates, Brown is a spiritual singer, but religion is not the guiding force of his music. His R&B roots are so predominant in his full-bodied singing that this album is much more straight-ahead than many reggae albums. It's excellent, however; so don't let that stop you.
