Description
Tom Shadyac's (ACE VENTURA) film tells the true story of Hunter "Patch" Adams (Robin Williams), an aspiring doctor in the 1970's who attempted to treat his patients with a medicine that modern science had totally disregarded: humor. After a stint in a mental hospital where he discovers his need to help others, a young Patch enters medical school. There he develops his own methods of reaching patients as an antidote to the the pomposity he witnesses in his instructors and fellow students. While his patients and fellow staff members appreciate his approach, the powers-that-be frown upon his "unschooled" methods and attempt to prevent him from practicing. Philip Seymour Hoffman (MAGNOLIA) and Monica Potter (ALONG CAME A SPIDER) co-star in this crowd pleaser based on a book by Adams.

Robin Williams was good as Patch Adams the doctor wanted to treat the person and treat them with compassion. The movie was based on the real life Patch Adams. The scenes with Patch and the patients were good.Oh how it would be nice to have more doctors who have the compassion that Patch Adams has.
This was a pretty good movie. Funny and serious at the same time, this movie holds your interest all the way through. Everyone in the movie does a great job and this great story is told really well.
((Spoilers in here...not that anyone's going to see this flick again)) This movie was pure sap, emotional drivel in all its disgusting glory. You could tell when it's time to cry, because the piano ensemble would thunder in the background telling you to. It told me to cry when Patch's [much younger] girlfriend was cryptically killed, but rather than tear up, all I could do was think "What the...
Robin Williams has again proven that he can play just about any role and be believable. I've always considered Robin Williams to be a comedian, but this combined with his performance in "Good Will Hunting" proves that he is a first class actor as well. Most don't realize that this is actually based on a true story, and "Patch Adams" really is a doctor. I think that many find...
I am all for movies that made from real life drama. In my opinion, I hope that it struck a nerve in the medical community. I don't know about you, but I get sick of being treated as an insurance claim when I walk through that emergency room.
only movie i have liked robin williams in... although birdcage was ok. he is just too much for me. IMO.
Yeah, it's more or less a true story. Unfortunately its a damn dull one too.
Bad movie made worse by Robin William's performance.
Robin Williams' dramatic cry alongs get really old in Patch Adams. The movie starts out okay but soon progresses into an overly dramatic movie that will bore you to tears.
Syrupy performances and directing make this dramedy all too obvious.
