Description
THE PHILADELPHIA STORY boasts an incredible cast, but it's Katharine Hepburn's picture in more ways than one. Tracy Lord (Hepburn), a Philadelphia heiress, is about to marry coal-company executive George Kittridge (John Howard). The wedding, promising to be the season's premier event, attracts the attention of magazine publisher Sidney Kidd (Henry Daniell), who sees it as an opportunity to break a story. Spy magazine's Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), Lord's ex-husband, is enlisted to "gain access" to the party, along with top scandal writer Macauley Connor (James Stewart, in an Oscar-winning role). However, the reporter is quickly smitten by the bride's charms--and he's not the only one. The film, based on the play by Phillip Barry, was first a Broadway sensation starring Hepburn, who acquired the screen rights, claimed the starring role, and chose the director, screenwriter, and lead cast. In addition to fine work by Grant and Stewart, notable supporting performances are delivered by Ruth Hussey and Virginia Weidler. One of nine films Hepburn made with director George Cukor, it remains one of the classics of their collaboration and of American cinema.

This film is amazing. How can you go wrong with Hepburn AND Stewart?!
This movie is terrific and extremely funny! People of this generation NEED to see it.
I believe this one may be one of Kate Hepburn's best character, as she's not playing Tracy Lord, she IS Tracy Lord!!!!!
An overrated film that doesn't stand the test of time, because the dialogue is overly theatrical. Much as in the contemporary dramas of Eugene O'Neill, the conversations are stilted, and Cary Grant is not at his best reciting his overly long bits of dialogue. James Stewart is better because speechifying roles are his trademark. Katherine Hepburn is great, but was she ever bad in a movie? Not much...
With Hepburn, Grant, and Stewart in the film - it doesn't get any better than that!
AM NOT MUCH FOR SAME SEX ANYTHINK BUT THIS WAS A GOOD MOVIE THAT TEACHERS ALL WHAT COULD HAPPEN WHEN EVER ONE GETS SICK,HOW QUICKLLY ONE FALL.VERY TRUE I SAY .
good well done and acted movie. Katherine Hepburn was perfect in the role of Tracy I heard when the play was written it was custom made for her. very good cast, with James Stewart, Cary Grant, has some very funny scenes. about a snobby socialite about to be married again. it is covered by the press and her ex husband cary grant is part of that. still holds up today.
I know I will never see another film with the wit, chemistry, and timing of Philadelphia Story.
One of the best dialogue driven comedies ever.
The Philadelphia Story (VHS - 1940)
Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant at their best.
