Great Reactor
4 Star Review   By JASON PETERSON on PetStore.com - Nov 3, 2014

Got this reactor a couple weeks ago and it has been working great. Flow through the reactor is awesome. No trouble with the rubber elbows, I just made sure there was no strain on them by making the hoses plenty long enough and not trying to make them bend in any odd angles. Overall, a great product for the money.

Phosban reactor 150
4 Star Review   By ROBERT SANTORO on PetStore.com - May 25, 2014

As far as I'm concerned the phosban reactor 150 works perfectly good product for the money. The only thing I found that should be changed is the hang on bracket could be I little wider for wider top rims. I have a 125 gal tank and I had to grind down the rim a little so the bracket would fit perfectly. All that said very good product. Works good with the maxi jet 1200 you just need to tone it down a bit. The only reason I gave it a four and a half star because of the hang on bracket not the performance the performance is great.

5 Star Review   By T ISOM on PetStore.com - Mar 1, 2014

Looking for an excellent reactor that is far less expensive than the Gucci models? This is the way to go. Excellent uplift and uniform dispersion of media. Hangs nicely on the side of a fuge or tank. I use three of them for GFO, Carbon, and Bio-pellet. Never had a leak.

Week plastic lids
4 Star Review   By BRIAN PARCHMONT on PetStore.com - Feb 27, 2014

I like these little reactors and have 3 of them. However the screw on lid can be made better with some kind of prongs on the side as to be able to grip them better. They do tend to crack on the sides of the lid if over tightened. Should be built with a thicker plastic to handle more pressure since everything in this hobby seems to be a leak waiting to happen. Don't think I will be buying another one.

Good Biopellet Reactor
4 Star Review   By KARL LOETZERICH on PetStore.com - Feb 23, 2014

Overall good biopellet reactor. Screens are needed to use it with biopellets. The construction seems good except for the soft rubber elbows. The locations of the inlet and outlet could be improved. The reactor cost was 50% of other reactors. I'm happy with my purchase.

Versatile with a flew flaws...
3 Star Review   By Scott on PetStore.com - Jul 31, 2013

I used this for Carbon/GFO and got decent results initially. Over time (2 months) the supplied 90 degree elbows cracked and required replacement. The included elbows are flimsy and will require replacement. I put hard plastic ones in as replacements. One of the primary reasons I pulled this off my tank was the method/manner of changing out the carbon/GFO. The top can get stuck, and pulling out the carbon/GFO is messy. I highly recommend the other canister style with an internal cylinder...much easier for refilling/changing. The versatility comes into play when you decide to change what you're running. I shifted from Carbon/GFO to a bag of chemipure elite, so this sat unused until I realized I had a CO2 problem (chasing pH for a couple of days), so with minimal modification, this became a CO2 scrubber added to the intake of my Tunze 9004. This helped me to bump up and stabilize my pH in a room with a CO2 problem. I'm torn on if I would actually recommend this as the parts that made it decent were mods along the way and not 'out of the box'.

1 Star Review   By NIck on PetStore.com - Jun 29, 2013

Look OK I've got it it cheap and it popular but In my opinion product is not good. You take it and it feel very cheap and flimsy internal rubber elbow is short and very inconvenient to set up It did happen when I set up the reactor and find out that internal connections got disconnected so I needed to disassemble everything and start over again. Reactor is plain cheap to the degree when it loosing it function. I bought bigger model it has 1/2 inch tubing which is waay ton small for the model I am using a marine land 600 g/h pump for bio pellets in this reactor and it is not enough anyway I would not buy it and to recommend to anyone Cheap, inconvenient, often not functioning right

Nice Reactor
4 Star Review   By ANGELA OGIEJKO on PetStore.com - Jun 16, 2013

Using this as a Sulfur Bead reactor, nice little unit and was easy to install on my custom 460 gallon tank. Easily had enough room for the media needed. The only con that I have found is that the connector for the input is a rubber elbow. It has a tendency to come apart during operation, it was a royal pain to get it to stop doing so. Would have been a much better design if done like the TLF 150. Otherwise, great unit for the price.

Great So Far
5 Star Review   By DANIEL DEMERITT on PetStore.com - May 23, 2013

I bought 2 of these. One for GFO and the other for carbon. The system looks great, the water clarity is much better that it was and It seems that the GFO is helping reduce phosphates as the hair algae is slowly disappearing. They were easy to set up. I used a loop off of my main return pump and made a PVC manifold with ball valves on both sides (Inlet and outlet)This way I can bypass the reactors without stirring up the reactor media. Customer Service as Always is a class act... shipping is lighting fast and packed well. I even got a personal note from the rep I spoke to about adding the second one after the 1st on was already processed.

After using the 150 for 5 months I'm done with it.... Everytime you change the media expect to spend at least 30 minutes trying to get it to STOP LEAKING. Spend the extra money on a better unit. I'm very dissappointed in the quality.

Seems to work great
3 Star Review   By JENNIFER KUHNAU on PetStore.com - Apr 24, 2013

I decided to try this out as a bio pellet reactor using the same technique they use in the video. I have a 100gph pump hooked up running about 250ml of pellets. The reactor seems good and sturdy. I gave it 3.5 starts because the bottom diffuser plate is crooked, I don't have any pellets sticking or anything but they could at least put the pieces together strait.

Good until acrylic cracked!
2 Star Review   By WILLIAM PHILLIPS JR. on PetStore.com - Mar 18, 2013

Worked good with the NPX BioPellets, except for the clumping issue. I had open up, stir the media to remove clumps, and hook it back up on a monthly basis. I started with a Maxi-Jet 1200, which is recommended by TLF, but it was not powerful enough to prevent clumps due to dead spots. I was cleaning the reactor to ready it for set up with a stronger pump, and noticed that the clear acrylic housing was severely cracked all over the entire clear sleeve of the reactor. Lasted a year:(

Don't hesitate - IT WORKS !!
5 Star Review   By DENNIS RICHARDS on PetStore.com - Dec 11, 2012

I decided to get one of these to perfect my water parameters to the desired levels of "perfect" I have mostly achieved that now after 2 months of use I can now feed my tank how ever I want to and see no harm done. I initially experienced the "leak" everyone who has something negative to say about these speaks of, and well after careful observation and investigation I discovered the lid was not getting screwed down as far as it could go. After putting more pressure on screwing down the lid, I have NOT had a single problem out of this reactor. I've been running it with the biopellets, and am now set to get a second reactor to run gfo in. If you are on the fence about getting one because someone said these leak, perhaps that person got a bad one? I've been enjoying mine. If those other folks were seeing leaks around the top, perhaps they just needed to put the lid on correctly as was the case with my experience? I hope my review is helpful. It's been a good product for me so far. I've been keeping and maintaining mixed reef/fish tanks for 23 years if that means anything.

Good Upflow Reactor
4 Star Review   By Larry Britt on PetStore.com - Nov 19, 2012

I have two of these; one for my probiotic and the other recently installed for phosphate. My probiotic unit has been installed for nearly two years using bioballs from LFS. It has worked good but I have now needed to replace the rubber elbows as they have hardened and don't function as designed. I would recommend this unit for the cost.

Best bang for the buck!
4 Star Review   By OSCAR ABDON on PetStore.com - May 1, 2012

What can I say? It's well made, cheap, and definitely looks superior to any DIY I could ever make. This is my second one, this time for GFO. I can buy a lot of these and still be happier about it, i.e. for GFO, carbon, bio pellets, zeo, matrix or de-nitrate, etc. Not so sure about Purigen though, which is like fine sand. It will probably just go through the sponge and into your tank.

Great Product
5 Star Review   By TANNER on Marine Depot - Mar 11, 2012

So I bought the Phosban 550 bec I have a 300g reef system. It is a nice product and I assume it will help lower my NO3 and PO4 quite a bit. I am using Carbon and GFO. I will make one recommendation. I used a little 40gph pump and it wouldnt do squat for the 550. I use a MaxiJet 1200 and it works like a charm. The turned the valve wide open for the carbon but I used the valve on the GFO to tumble the media as desired. It is important not to grind the GFO as particles will be released back into the water column. Great product. Looking forward to the results.

Good
4 Star Review   By RONUALDO ROBINA on Marine Depot - Feb 1, 2012

This is a good product, espcially for the price! I used rowaphos in this reactor and is very easy to use. The ball valve that comes along with this is handy, just keep in mind that you need to purchase your own hose and pump. Using a Maxijet 400 and is perfect for it. Read the instructions, make sure you fully open the valve at least once a week. As far quality of parts, I've had this for only two weeks, and not nearly long enough to really give a detailed review.

Review on just reactor build
4 Star Review   By ERNEST FONG on Marine Depot - Jan 13, 2012

This is a review of the reactor not it's effects. It is built nicely does not have all the tubing you need to get started so don't forget to have some 1/2 in tubing and a pump. A note for the pump, be careful not to have too strong a pump or you will be using the ball valve included and causing the pump to create excess noise. Research your needed flow for your type of media you are using for this reactor.

Best bang for the buck!
5 Star Review   By OSCAR ABDON on PetStore.com - Jan 5, 2012

What can I say? It's well made, cheap, and definitely looks superior to any DIY I could ever make. This is my second one, this time for GFO. I can buy a lot of these and still be happier about it, i.e. for GFO, carbon, bio pellets, zeo, matrix or de-nitrate, etc. Not so sure about Purigen though, which is like fine sand. It will probably just go through the sponge and into your tank.

Great reactor for a great deal. My diatom algae is gone and phosphates down to 0. Great buy. The corals are noticable healthier since I put it in. One of the best additions I have put in my tank in a long time.

Truly a life saver. I have two of them in my 90g reef - one with carbon and one with GFO. They're small enough to fit almost anywhere and work flawlessly. The price is great; you get way more than what you pay for here. Fully satisfied. Thank you TLF for this great product!

If detritus (algae) gets into the chamber the top connection gets unplugged and you have to constantly open to fix it. Apart from this, its a good product to reduce phosphates.

Reactor Review
1 Star Review   By WILLIAM MEGINLEY on Marine Depot - Sep 8, 2011

The unit came with most of the parts needed to operate except tubing, clamps and water pump. After assembling and installing on the outside of the sump I noticed that the base had a small leak where the acrylic meets the plastic base. After sealing the unit with silicone on the interior and exterior and allowing to dry - I was worried about the leak so I installed the unit in the sump. Good thing that I did because the unit is still leaking. For $60.00 it is not built to hold up to 1000 gpm water flow but it should be able to hold water with a 200 gpm power head. DON'T TRUST THE SEALS!

550 reactor.
5 Star Review   By AGUSTIN VILLEGAS on Marine Depot - Apr 2, 2011

I have four Phoban Reactors two 150's & two 550's I'm using ROWAphos media in both 150 reactors in two of my fragging tanks, & running both 550's in my main tank. I have one with the ROWAphos media & one with the NPX BioPlastics, & they both work perfectly, if anyone out there is planing on getting the 550 reactor with the BioPlastics I suggest you get at least a 400GPH pump in order to ensure you have proper media tumbling. At first I had a MaxiJet 1200 for the 550 reactor with the NPX media & it was berly enough to tumble the media. So if any one out the is planing on using this product with the NPX media make sure you have or get a pump rated for at least 400GPH. Also make sure you wash the pellets very well with water before putting the reactor into service it will prevent the media from clumping which is very bad & start of by only using about 25% of recomended media for volume of water in tank then slowly add 25% about every week or two weeks (depending on bio load) it will prevent the water from clouding up & looking like milk. One last thing all my Phosphates & Nitrates are undetectable.

Phosban 550
5 Star Review   By GARY FAULKNER on Marine Depot - Mar 31, 2011

I really like the 550. I was running 2 of the Phosban 150s and they just didn't have enough capacity for my 400 gallon system. With the 550 I can run enough GFO for my larger system. Once I get the P04 where I want it I'm going to convert the 550 to a pellet reactor. It has a cone shaped bottom and you can chose the output and input on the cap of the reactor. The 550 is a good reactor for GFO, carbon or as a pellet reactor.

Phosban reactor
3 Star Review   By DAVID YOUNG on Marine Depot - Mar 29, 2011

I bought this for a pellet reactor. It is working fine for this but I had to get what I believe is quite a large pump (Quiet One 2200) to get the pellets rolling. It is a good average unit cheaply made IMHO but it is somewhat cheap in cost also. "Get what you pay for".

Thought I would save a few bucks and buy this.... BAD IDEA! After receiving my new reactor, a NextReef MR1 I realized just how much that extra $10.00 bucks really gets you. I wouldnt GIVE this TLF reactor to a fellow hobbyist, it is now a pencil holder. If you buy this over the NextReef product just be ready to deal with leaks and spending more money.

Phosban 550
4 Star Review   By DAVID STERN on Marine Depot - Jan 28, 2011

This is my second reactor. I am currently using this one so I can run GFO. I honestly think it is a little more than needed for my size system (240g + 75g sump). IMHO I believe the 150 would be more than large enough. The reactor did bring my levels down my phosphates to almost zero in a matter of hours though. I also use the same model reactor with Vertex Bio-pellets about 1000 ml. I had to get a larger pump and add screen netting over the top and bottom of the reactor. I also used a larger pump than a 400 or 1200 Maxjet that is recommended.

Consider Denitrate
5 Star Review   By CHARLES GOODMAN on Marine Depot - Dec 8, 2010

This is a great reactor for many things. Of course it works well for Phosban, but I fill it with Seachem Denitrate and it works great for nitrate removal. You might consider some biopellets for even better results. The combination of Denitrate, biopellets and this reactor makes a great denitrification system.

Great Reactor!
5 Star Review   By Rizano on Marine Depot - Aug 31, 2010

I bought 3 of these reactors (150 model) to battle a green hair algae problem. I was overfeeding so my fault but now I need to stop this algae quick before it overflows out of my tank and turns my neighborhood into the swamps! One is running Hydrocarbon2, the other is running Phosban, and the third is running RowaPhos. The Rio+ 800 Pump is perfect for these reactors. No leaks at all but I used 1/2 inch plactic clamps on all connections to be safe. After 2 weeks the green hair algae has started to die. No negative impact on any of my livestock or PH level. Hopefully in a few months (or sooner) it will all be gone. Be careful to make sure no media is in the way as you screw on the cap otherwise it may not seal properly. I have a 120 gallon tank. I'm the type of person that is willing to spend more for better quality. I feel these reactors are built with quality materials.

The unit is a great solution. Everything you need is included, except tubing to go from your pump or other supply source, but I didn't expect that. It sets up easily and works well. I got it to use with activated carbon, so I can't comment on the phosban part. It has great capacity and good flow control.

perfect little reactor
4 Star Review   By curt on Marine Depot - Jun 25, 2010

very well built, for carbon or GFO (or both, just put the GFO at the bottom). comes with all the plumbing connections, big plus. it isn't built like a tank, but gets the job done VERY well, especially for the price. unless you have a long distance to pump, stick with a smaller maxi-jet pump, you'll want slower speeds for longer contact time and the pump can start to vibrate if you throttle it back too much with the included valve.

love it
5 Star Review   By DAVID AINSWORTH on Marine Depot - Apr 21, 2010

I love the extra space in this model reactor. It allows me to use as much or as little media as I need. The connctions seem a little flimsy, but after hooking it up and seeing if it leaks...turns out those connections are quite strong...even after wiggleing them around while the unit is in use. NO LEAKS. My only gripe is that I am using a Maxjet 1200...and it doesn't seem like enough pump to get the media I'm useing to move around much...but it sill new...so maybe it will all break in in another week.

4 Star Review   By RG on Marine Depot - Feb 11, 2010

This is a decent unit considering the very reasonable price. It functions well and very easy to setup and get going. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that it's not the most solidly built unit. True, it won't take much abuse in my 100G sump but still, there has to be at least one reason why you might spend 2-3 times more for another unit.

5 Star Review   By fishjunkie on Marine Depot - Feb 10, 2010

As far as reactors go.....this one takes the cake! Nothing fancy...and that's the best part! I've used several other brands, the Aqua C XP Plus being the worst, and they all lack features that this one excels at. the fittings are all perfect, no fiddling around so the media doesn't fall into the tubing, ect. Plan and simple! I just put the media in and connected everything....works like it should! I'm running Rowaphos in the 150 w/ a Mj600 and ESV carbon in the 550 w/ a Mj1200. If you need a larger capacity go for the 550. Don't waste your money on anythings else!

This unit was super easy to setup and is working perfectly. Pros- size, fittings, and cost. Cons- No indication on pump needs.( I used a magdrive 190 worked perfect), also directions were wrong as far as input/output you need to have the water flow up from the bottom for best results. these were minor Using unit for activated charcoal in a reef tank. When using a 660gph pump for testing the flow did not look as if it increased any so I stuck with the 190gph.

I have a single TLF Reactor running 500mL of carbon w/ a Maxi-jet 900 on a 150g African Cichlid tank. It has certainly been sufficient enough to keep the water clear and the levels down thus far. I had read that several others here have had problems with leakage around the seals and joints. I instead reinforced each tubing connection with large zip-ties and have not seen a single leak yet. Great product, easy to install, easy to service, no more filter bags!

I actually own both this one by Two Little Fishies and the one made by Kent called the nautilus phos reactor and I prefer this one. The screw on lid makes changing media easier. Be careful though because if you have the pump running and try to adjust the unit or accidently bump it you can pop off one the hoses and make a mess like me.

So far so good!!
4 Star Review   By T LACEY on Marine Depot - Mar 15, 2009

I purchased this litle devil to help battle a Hair Algae problem. You would be better off getting this device as routine maintenance rather then problem solving. One thing to keep in mind is that if you have a phosphate problem, you can not just hook this thing up and expect your problem to go away over night. By this time, the phosphates have leached their way into your rock and sand. You will need to use more than usual amounts of media and change as soon as exausted to get phosphates in check. Test water exiting reactor to know when to replace media. After reading, I am using ROWAphos, which is a Granular Ferric Oxide (GFO). It has a much higher capacity than other medias and will not release harmful metals such as aluminum into the water or anything for that matter. There are a few different brands to go with and after reading some comparisons, I just got more confused. So pick one a try it and don't get cought up on prices! Another problem are test kits! It is very difficult to find a kit that measures low enough to track this problem. If the phosphates are in the roch and sand it wont even recognize it. To get a good kit capable of measuring down to the levels to erradicate problems, it will cost you an arm and half a leg!!! Do some more research. Initial setup was really easy and I was reading trying to figure if I should flush the media prior to use to get rid of the tiny particles. Even though they will not harm anything (corals, fish, ect.), it clouds the water something awful and will leave a coating on everthing in your tank. Your should run a couple gallons of ro water through and discard. Due to the size of the reactor, you only need a small pump to run this. I got a mini-jet 404, does the job and fits anywhere!!! Cheap too! Great alternative to huge, expensive reactors. But remember, this is not a set it and forget it type device. You need to stay on top of it or it is just another waste of your hard earned money and time.

I just installed this product with phosban on my 46 gallon mixed reef yesterday. Po4 was reading ~1.0ppm and this morning read 0.03ppm. If the directions are followed it seems to work very well and I don't have leaks...even without clamps. I am using a maxi-jet 400 and it works great. I am thinking of purchasing another one just for carbon on my other tank. Great filter for the price.

Marine Depot
Phosban Reactor 150
4 Star Review   By THOMAS MOORE on Marine Depot - Jan 27, 2008

Works great, but I did not use the flexable 90 degree connectors. I connected the tubing strait to the Phosban reactor and secured the tubing with stainless steel clamps. It leaked with the flexable 90 degree connectors.

Marine Depot
Works Great!
5 Star Review   By DAVE P on Marine Depot - Jan 7, 2008

I set up a bank of 3 of these on my reef tank, for Phosban, Carbon, and an "auxillary." They work great no matter what media I put in them. Sharp looking product, and easy to get into and maintain.

Marine Depot
phosban reactor
1 Star Review   By ANTHONY PIZZUTILLO on Marine Depot - Dec 25, 2007

difficult to keep media circulating, even with dedicated maxijet pump. as a result significant drop in efficacy after a couple of days of usage, media blocks water paasage even when mixing with carbon, do not recommend.
