An excellent choice
5 Star Review   By Tadas on PETCO - Oct 14, 2011

I purchased my fluval 405 approx. 6 months ago for my 90 gal heavily planted aquarium. Prior to selecting this specific filter I reviewed many mixed customer reviews online. I read many minor negative things such as leaking seals poor and cheap engineering. .... I disagree completely. The engineering is very simple and practical. The filter is easy to clean and I don't hear it working at all (inside of the stand). I had a major green algae prob due to unestablished tank causing the water turn green. The filter got rid of the problem within 12 hours. Best purchased I made so far.

Best filter I've used
5 Star Review   By cichlidlovr on PETCO - Aug 8, 2011

I have had this filter set up for over a year on a 55gal african cichlid tank, and have had no problems at all. I change media about once a month or so and add water as needed. This filter is almost silent, and works amazing. I will and have recommended this filter to everyone. It does take time to get set up the first time, so take your time and do it right and you may not have any of the problems others are having. I haven't had so much as a drop of water leak or had any problems with the impeller. just do the basic maintenance on it and it will last years

So far Fluval is AWESOME!!!
5 Star Review   By cspinnc on PETCO - Jul 7, 2011

I have only had this filter for about 48 hours but if it continues to run this quietly I may have to switch all of my filters to canisters.....Though I may have to max out a credit card to do so. I used to use only marineland penguin BIO-wheels but I went through two 200s in under a year, for some reason they both just stopped.?. So far I love this filter!!! By far the quietest I have ever seen!!!

Don't buy
1 Star Review   By Babycuddles on PETCO - Dec 20, 2010

Upon first setting up we had water spilling over the floor due to the hoses are awful to work with. Now ours is less than 3 mos. old and is broken. The impaler is cheaply made. I can see we'll be buying parts all the time to replace broken ones. Overall it is not user friendly, difficult to do any changes with it, hard to get it primed and running proper when done changing filters. I will not ever buy any Fluval products again.

fluval 305
5 Star Review   By engine568 on PETCO - Nov 2, 2010

I bought the Fluval 305 for my 55 gallon tank about 6 years ago. It just keeps going and keeps the tank crystal clear. Once you get the hang of taking it apart when cleaning it..its a breeze. And yes with the 305 you do need something to help you gently pry it open but hey...a good seal is good thing in my book....no water on my floor EVER. Today was the first time it stopped working though....broke the impeller cover but its a quick find online for it. The initial price for a canister filter is a bit high....but well worth it. Low maintenance as well.....You dont need to clean it as often once you find the right balance. I have gone several months without changing the foam pads, carbon, etc....

Weak Flow, High Maintenance
2 Star Review   By CJ79 on PETCO - Oct 21, 2010

As I am sure with other negative reviews, someone will come along and tell me I do not know how to do this or that with my filter and that is why I gave it a poor rating. I've owned the Fluval 205 for 2 years and from the beginning this filter has been a pain. The replacement media is ridiculously priced, the design is flawed as much of the water does not have to pass throuugh any filter media, it simply goes in, crosses over the top of all of that through a piece of foam and comes out. And within a week of cleaning the filter the output flow is 1/2 of what it was. It's a pain to clean with the compartments snapping together but never fitting just right, causing more ways for water to circumvent the media and something (I have yet to find out what this is) builds up in the tubing even after a cleaning it all comes out and makes the tank dirty. I've to-date not found a filter that doesn't have flaws. I've also never spent over $150 for one, so that may be the problem...but this one is not on the top of my best flawed filters I've owned list. That honor would go to the Aquaclear hang-on filter, which is what I recommend for a smaller tank..

Really? problems???
5 Star Review   By cichlidlover on PETCO - Sep 16, 2010

I purchased the 405 for my 60 gallon cichlid tank, to replace a Cascade 1000, let me tell you i love this filter. i had it for only about 3 wks now and i really have notice a difference with the water quality and the flow, i still do my weekly water changes but wow i love it. Its setup was a breeze and yes the hosing is a lil cheesy but aren't all hoses hard to set up out of the box? as for the media alot of different setups can be done to suit your needs. this filter is a power house for its size, but i was a lil pushed back on the price but hey you pay for what you get and you get an amazing filter! thanks guys!

The best set up for the money !
5 Star Review   By droth1025 on PETCO - May 13, 2010

Like all avid fish hobbiests, I did my homework and research. I watched the videos available and spoke with all the local pet suppliers around and this product came highly recommended both by the people and the reviews. I ordered it on a Wednesday and it arrived the follwowing Monday. The service was extraordinary and the packaging was exemplarary. I had the filter set up and running in less than a half hour and it hasn't missed a beat. The instructions were very easy to follow and the video answered all the questions I could have had. The performance of the FLUVAL FILTER has exceeded all my expectations. I have never had so clean and balanced water conditions as this set up allows. I could not be any happier. My Wife breeds angels and we use this set up in one of our main 75 gallon tanks used for pairing and display. We are currently using BIOWHEELS and it just wasn't getting the job done. I will be moving to outfit the other 4 tanks to this product line. It's efficiency and can only be surpassed by how quiet it is. This set up would be great for any office, home or display where you do not want the filter to be the main topic of discussion, except on how exceptionally clean and clear the water is. I highly recommend this product line for any enthusiast.

Fluval is very good
5 Star Review   By Klave on PETCO - May 6, 2010

I've had Fluval for my Discus tanks for years, including the older 404 and then 405 and 305 and these filters cycle the water into this nice soil smelling water in no time. I'm using them in a 125 gallon and 75 gallon and a 55 gallon tank(s). In the 125 I use one 405 and one 305 and the water is sparkling and my Discus love it due to their willingness to spawn in the main tank. I also have Ram cichlids and all of them thrive. Many people that I read about, for example, broken impellers and other things break, how are you handling the parts? The impeller shaft for example is ceramic and one can not use a lot of force there. The lid over the impeller one push careful until the locks click. I've had Fluval since 1995 and I have not had one part break on me. If I am a fanboy? No, just realistic after experience.

Please Stock Parts
4 Star Review   By Robert0117 on PETCO - Mar 9, 2010

Great filter does what it should do with minimal muss or fuss. It does require periodic maintenance like any filter. As others have noted the clip on the impeller cover will eventually break. Replacement parts can be found after a quick Google search, but why oh why doesn't Petco stock repair parts for the equipment it sells?!?!?

Fluval plastic parts go bad.
4 Star Review   By AquaE on PETCO - Dec 9, 2009

I've used these filters for years. The 404 was much easier to reinstall after cleaning than it's predecessor, but eventually the plastic parts go bad. For me, the aquastop lever quit engaging, so you run the risk of having every gallon of your aquarium spill out into your home. There always seems to be something annoying about these products, but they run constantly, for years, and do a pretty good job.

This is my first canister filter. I was a little nervous. I thought it would be complicated. The DVD was a great help. The filter is wonderful and a great investment. The water is crystal clear, and I can't hear a thing. I would not hesitate to buy another one.

Good for the price
4 Star Review   By Aimza on PETCO - Nov 3, 2009

I've only used Fluval filters. I find them to do what they are supposed to do. However I have to buy a new one around every two years for different reasons. This particular one, 305, is too hard to open so I have to use a screwdriver and eventually the seal breaks and it leaks. They say to lube it which I do, but it doesn't solve the problem. I have yet to find a solution for this.

Great Filter
5 Star Review   By NickC on PETCO - Mar 22, 2009

I have been using a Fluval 205 for my turtle tank for 3 years... never a problem and works great. I installed the 305 when I upgraded to a 55 gallon tank and couldn't be happier. Not sure what everyone is saying about leaks as I have never had one on either unit. I still use the 205 and am now using the 305 and my turtles are very happy (they told me so)! Great filter with the highest recommendation I can give!!!

Good Product, Bad Quality Control
4 Star Review   By Bobert68 on PETCO - Mar 2, 2009

I am using a 305 on my 46 gallon tank and it works great. Very easy to maintain and change media. Only problem was leak in intake hose on first filter. Two holes in adjacent pleates dumped several gallons of water on carpet before I could disconnect intake and break siphon. This might be why the siphon pump didn't work and I had to use the old fashon sucking method to establish a siphon. A simple pressure test during CQ would have identified the problem. Took the bad hose back to my retail Petco and they exchanged it for a good one. Only problems were a wasted 2 hours, a couple of gallons of water to clean, and 50 miles of extra driving.

5 Star Review   By eyring2210 on PETCO - Feb 15, 2009

I got the fluval 205 to replace a external filter. The 205 is absolutely silent! It was easy to set up for me and primed well. I did have to pump the primer after I plugged it in to move some extra air out of the return line, but no problems after that. I have a 30 gallon tank with a bunch of tetras in it and boy are they HAPPY! The setup DVD was very helpful.

Save yourself money
1 Star Review   By Michie on PETCO - Sep 18, 2008

I have had to exchange my fluval 404 and 405 numerous times (they are both only a few months old). I have had water leaks and problems with the impeller on the 404 and the new 405. I have done a review search through google and I've read about so many other people who have had problems with fluval. Save yourself money and buy a different filter. I have other tanks with different filters and no problems.

Easy to set up and maintain.
5 Star Review   By JoshandDi on PETCO - May 13, 2008

I have a 405 for my 75 gallon FW setup. Setting up was a breeze. I love the extra compartments for whatever media your setup might call for. You can get ammonia remover, biomax, peat gradules or fiber, zero-carb, carbon, filter floss, and pretty much any other specific media you want (as long as it fits). Maintainence is a snap with the aqua-stop feature and instant prime systems. All in all a great choice for someone who wants a great canister, but doesn't have a ton of money to spend.

best canister filter
5 Star Review   By PinkAnemone1 on PETCO - Feb 12, 2008

This canister is great. It is user friendly and is maintainance free. I have a saltwater tank and monthly or semi-monthly maintainance is a sinch. All you have to do is replace the carbon in the bags and you can also use the individual trays in numerous ways. If you need more filteration or just want to use it for carbon it is great. My bacteria for the tank is in it's own tray all you have to do is remove it and, place it in salt water till you are done. Put the trays back and FILTERS!!! last a long time when you clean them be sure to take them and shake them very hard and hit them against something to get the extra gunk out. And they will last for months!! Overall, this is a great investment to any aquatic person.

This is the best canister filter on the Market!
5 Star Review   By Marinelover on PETCO - Feb 7, 2008

This filter is one of the best on the market due to its reliability, performance, and overall efficiency. I can tell that fluval has really outdone themselves with the new 05 models! One of the major advantages of this system is setup, it's a breeze that doesn't take very long to do. The hoses are easy to manage with and everything fits together perfectly, unlike the Marineland c-360. AS a matter of fact, i had the Marineland c - 360 filter for a year, and it broke down. So i went down to petco and bought the Fluval 405. It offers a lot of versatility meaning that it you can add the different media depending on your tank set up. For example, in a marine aquarium, the growth and development of beneficial bacteria is very important to a marine system and this filter makes that possible. You can put the special media into the baskets and it doesn't have to be just one type of media. You can have the ceramic rings with the carbon as well as ammonia remover. Which is much better than the Marineland Magnum that only allows the use of carbon! (the picture i have provided shows the three levels of media that can be placed...) Then, once plugged in, all the media and sponges really go to work to take out fine debri and impurities that may reside in your tank. My tank is sparkling and it continues. This filter is known for its durability, once i took it out of the box, just seeing how it was built with its fail-proof system made me satisfied. Prior to buying this filter, I've done a significant amount of research and on every site i went on, the fluval seemed to be one of the number 1 filters to buy! Its true, my fish have never been happier, and for those who are interested in setting up a saltwater system, this filter could potentially save you money because the flow and the water it pushes out circulates the water creating a current, which eliminates the need for a wave maker. Some filters, believe it or not, have some bypass and does not filter all of the water that enters the canister filter. However, with this filter, all the water that goes through, comes out sparkling clean. All in all, i would highly recommend this product to anyone who is interested in buying a canister filter. They are fairly inexpensive and provide the ultimate convenience and flexibility that everyone seeks in a filter, that will make your water sparkling clean, just as it made my aquarium, a happy aquarium.

I am going on my SECOND Fluval 405 since August 2007. That is FOUR months! My first one was replaced at the store after two months. I just received a new Impeller Cover for my second one. No explanation or reason is clear for it breaking. While the customer support is excellent, the product is difficult to use and far too complicated to clean and maintain. NOT worth the money! Better options are available.

Fluval 405: love it
5 Star Review   By Meechity on PETCO - Oct 3, 2007

I have my 405 running in a 75-gallon freshwater tank. Setup is easy, priming takes a few good pumps - you might be tempted to keep pumping when you don't hear water rushing into the canister, but just relax: water IS flowing, just wait for the air bubbles to cease. The hoses do come straight out of the top of the canister. Some people have had trouble with this, but the hoses provided are long enough that you don't have to position the canister at the back of your cabinet... just run some extra hose. There is plenty of hose supplied, just cut it longer. Maintenance: takes longer than simpler, weaker filters. Just some running water, cheap wire brushes, once a month. Your investment needs to be taken care of properly, but it's really not so bad. 15-20 minutes for me. The carbon that comes with the product doesn't fit well into the media baskets, so I just got more mesh bags (that's my only complaint). ALWAYS have an extra O-ring on hand. If you check them for dryness every time you maintenance, you should be fine. Put your canister in a bucket in case a leak occurs. If your O-ring literally blew, you have to just blame bad luck, not the product. If the canister is making noise, you should check for an air leak... especially if you have had trouble priming. The Fluval should be VERY quiet! Finally, you should get a canister filter package-rated above the size of tank - shoot for a turnover (gallons per hour) of at LEAST 4X the volume of your tank (10 gallon tank = 40 gph, 50 gallon tank = 200 gph, 100 gallon tank = 400 gph) This is not excessive; fish appreciate water movement. The ratings on the boxes are really just bad marketing practices :) Best of luck with your aquaria!! ~M

Disappointing-Poor Quality
2 Star Review   By angelfishlover on PETCO - Oct 5, 2006

I purchased the Fluval 405 because of the media chambers and ease of maintenance. I am very disappointed with the workmanship. The motor seems noisy compared to my Eheim. The hosing is very thin and poor quality. The manner in which the hose connects to the intake and outputs is poor and makes cleaning difficult. Because the hose connection from the filter goes straight up from the aqua-stop valve, I have had to place the filter all the way back in my aquarium stand. When I started up the filter, I had to pump and pump to get it to start filling with tank water. The instat prime system seems flimsy and does not work well. The whole aqua-stop mechanism really is poor quality compared to the Eheim system. To top it off, the charcoal poaches which come with the filter are clearly made for the Aquaclear power filters (another Hagen product) and don't really fill the compartments of the Fluval. Water is easily able to bypass the charcoal poaches. Back to the drawing board Fluval.

Great Quality and Superior Filtration
5 Star Review   PETCO

I have a 305 and 405 on a 55 and 72 gallon tank. It is the best filter yet. Hagen has put out the best in these, they are only second to Hagen's FX5. Easy to clean, install and change. I recommend buying carbon in bulk and get little mesh bags to save some money for changing. The filtration quality is very good. New tanks with cloudy water will be cleared in less then half an hour. I have had both since they came out with the 05 series and have not had one problem with them. The Aquastop valves help alot and the seperated compartments are a great feature. Definetly recommend it to any serious aquariust or those just beginning in the hobby. Overall the best filter I have used. Hagen has definetly exceeded my expectations and have made great improvments on the 04 series. I can't wait to see what they will come out with next, especially the 06 series. P.S. I recommend getting the size up from what you need. For example if you have a 40 gallon tank, get the 305 not the 205, it will provide an extra boast in fitlration and will allow you to have a couple extra fish incase you get a little fish buying happy :) (Don't we all do it though sometimes) Happy Fish Keeping

Buy an Emporer 400 instead
2 Star Review   PETCO

I have two fluval canister filters and an emporer 400 power filter. The fluvals use cheap hard to route hoses. Most of the parts are very easy to break. Today my fluval 405 blew an o ring and flooded my living room with 40 gallons of water. Yeah they are great as far as bio/chemical filtration, but also a pain to do clean and change media. My emporer is 4yrs old now and never have to do anything to it but drop new carbon and cartriges in it. I also have a marineland magnum canister that is decent. Out of all my filters the emporer 400 is the best. about $50 cheaper and wont flood your house. If you really want a canister filtration stay away from any fluvals! It might save your carpet.
