Go with Eheim Canisters!
Set it up and let it go. Threw away the carbon part before I set it up - put in the pre-filter media, foam and bio-mass - and haven't cleaned it in months. Water parameters are next to perfect. This is all the while using 2 T5 HO's eight hours a day with CO2 supplementation. Try doing all that with the fancy-schmancy coming from FV with their nitrate-factories creating enough algae issues to make...

Good Value
I have previously utilized a canister filter as a sump water vacuum. Yes I said vacuum. I recently setup a Nano Reef aquarium (with live rock in the sump) and was in need of a way to remove detritus. I find the Eheim nimble enough to allow me sufficient maneuverability i.e. it is not too large to obstruct my access (lean over the canister) to my sump. A little cumbersome to take apart and clean compared with the newer Eheims, but works good, is reliable and is quiet.
