4 Star Review   By CHRIS HILL on PetStore.com - Jun 30, 2014

It's a good skimmer but it's way to big. I used to only buy eshopps products but heard this was good. Great price. The fine adjustments worked well until I moved the pump just a little to change the filter material. Now the fine a adjustments are fully on or fully closed. Been doing this along time never seen one so picky. I would recommend that you use the tube provided with the skimmer to run into larger container for the nasty stuff.

Good skimmer
4 Star Review   By JAMES HOLLOPETER on PetStore.com - Apr 3, 2014

This is a great skimmer, but it is geared more for a sump then a hang on the back at least if you want a lid on your tank. I had to refit my lid to accommodate the return of this skimmer to this 65 Tall tank which has a two inch opening in the back. I do have a Refugium, but my space below my tank is severely limited. Coralife's did not state what opening was needed to accommodate this return However it is easy to operate and is skimming like a real champ. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is the lack of that information on the return.

Well!
2 Star Review   By WILLIAM CONNOLLY on PetStore.com - Feb 27, 2014

Perhaps I'm not using the skimmer correctly, but I find the fine adjustment to be not so fine. I have the skimmer hanging outside my sump with the powerhead inside the sump. Just as I had my previous Coralife smaller skimmer located. With the water level in the sump as marked for the old skimmer, I cannot seem to adjust the flow knob to operate correctly. It either continues to flood the collection cup or never reaches the top of the over flow level. It's only been two days since I've installed it. I hope to have a finer adjustment after a little more break in period. All I can hope for is a finer adjustment flow valve.

2 Star Review   By STEVE OLIVER on PetStore.com - Apr 16, 2013

Coralife must be proud of their products to charge what they do . Being a well known leader in the industry you would think they would make a better product for what they charge. The break in period is lengthy and is tedious, don't dare to turn it off ,it's not easy to set the flow again . Parts constantly break and its a wait to get parts from coralife. I had a instant ocean that was way better, don't waste your money on this product,to many parts To go bad . I purchased a bubble magus and waiting for it to arrive will comment on it when's I get it.

Same old thing
1 Star Review   By Burto on PetStore.com - Feb 25, 2013

Used the original version of the 65 for almost a year with six months or more as a HOB. It leaked, took up a lot of tank space and at best, produced a skimate the color of tea, and continually pumped micro bubbles back into the tank. Very unpredictable. If I dared to let the collection cup fill to half, I would come home or wake up to find it over flowed. It worked much better in the sump, but still never pulled out the "coffee" looking gunk. Tried this 2nd. Gen version to find out its worse. Cheap material, jagged edges and all the original issues. Out of the box, I had issues. CoraLife has managed to make a poor product worse no doubt by trying to save themselves money in manufacture. Listen to Burto, stay away!

Great!
5 Star Review   By MARK GILBERT on PetStore.com - Dec 31, 2012

I don't know why some of the people here have given this product such bad reviews, it performs perfect for me! I have it on a 30 gallon and it pulls out some dark nasty gunk! I would not put this on a tank bigger than 40 gallons, but thats just my opinion. During the initial break-in you do have to watch out and make sure you don't have it dialed all the way up or you may have water spill, but thats like most skimmers. I love that it has such a big collection cup too, and in my case it doesn't produce any micro bubbles, I would defintely buy this product again, it works great!

AWESOME
5 Star Review   By SaltyBoy on PETCO - Jan 20, 2012

Lots of micro-bubbles at first, that's OK. After 2 weeks of "breaking in" skimming wet and dry. Brown ugly gook is being removed from my reef tank every day. LOVE this item, 65G. Coralife also VERY helpful to assist you with any questions. Well made. Durable. LET IT BREAK IN, you will see and smell the results!

Got a monkey wrench
4 Star Review   By jjamontan on PETCO - Nov 18, 2011

This Skimmer works well, took about three days to break in and stop all if the micro bubbles, just like other reviews have said. The only problem I have seen so far is that to remove the collection cup to clean it out you have got to use some serious force. After cleaning out the cup and putting the cup back on you have got to tighten with some extreme force again or it will leak all over your floor. And every time I go to take it off for cleaning (every other day) I wish I had a monkey wrench big enough to make the job easy.

I have this skimmer in my 30g. sump under my 55g. reef tank. Its well made and very reasonably priced. I always liked Coralife products and their skimmer was my second choice which I regret... I spent the same amount of money on a Prizm and it's a total failure in every respect. Not so with this Coralife skimmer. Its doing a great job and I certainly recommend it.

FANTASTIC SKIMMER
5 Star Review   By PulsatingXenia on PETCO - Feb 4, 2011

This skimmer is great! I have it on my 90 gallon reef and it has been doing a great job! Be patient with the break-in period. It will take about 3-4 days for the skimmer to break-in and run properly, but after that it is fantastic! The drain and tube that are included make getting rid of the waste so easy. I have the waste draining into a bucket, and I clean the collection cup when I do a water change to get rid of any underlying green gunk. FANTASTIC SKIMMER!!!

Great Skimmer
4 Star Review   By GRANT on Marine Depot - Dec 7, 2010

These are the only skimmers I have ever used and they work great! I have had two 65 gallon rated skimmers and they pulled tons of black organic gunk out! I recently upgraded to a 90 gallon tank and needed to upgrade the skimmer as well. I purchased this 125 skimmer and it is also doing exactly what it is supposed to do for alot less than other skimmers. It took almost two weeks to break in but that may be due to the massive amount of new water too. I called Coralife CS to get some advice on why it wasn't producing Skimmate yet after several days, they were very helpful and were more than willing to replace the skimmer if needed but it just so happens that it broke in the next day. It is now producing alot of skimmate and my tank is crystal clear, and the nitrates I had are disappearing from the cycle I had with the tank swap. I highly recommend this skimmer! Save some money and buy it!

Great Protein Skimmer
5 Star Review   By Wulfe on PETCO - Nov 6, 2010

Fantastic skimmer! Easy to setup, install, and adjust. After many weeks of reading reviews and searching I finally decided this was the skimmer. I am extremely pleased with the model 125. I set it up as a hang-on model for my 55g tank. It takes up a bit of room so if you have a sump, that's the place for it. Otherwise its been perfect. The skimmer produces a nice thick dark foam and the level has not needed adjustment after the 24 hr break-in period. The materials of construction are acceptable but I wouldn't suggest dropping it to test them out. The instruction manual is clunky. If this is your first skimmer, read up on them on-line as well or you'll probably find the manual confusing.

4 years and still going!
5 Star Review   By Tek008 on Marine Depot - Oct 11, 2010

I initially purchased the Coralife 65G due to the low cost. It replaced my CPR Back Pak 2 and pulls out a lot more gunk with less adjustments. The problems I have read seem to be due to improper setup. The pump needs to be set at half initially per the instructions to prevent flooding and once it breaks in the pump can be turned to full and adjusted by the easy to use dial. I have mine dialed in and have not touched the knob in years. I only have to empty the cup when needed and run vinegar through the pump every 6-8 months to keep it in good shape. This has been a good investment and I actually stopped by today to purchase the 220g version for my heavily populated fish only tank.

Great skimmer for the price
4 Star Review   By alreefer on Marine Depot - Sep 30, 2010

I am currently using the 125 skimmer and have been for the past 5 months. So far I the only trouble I have had with it was a leak at the collection cup o-ring, which was fixed by removing and cleaning the o-ring. I let Oceanic know about the problem and they sent me a new collection cup and o-ring anyways, so great customer service. For the price it can't be beat. I will soon be starting a carbon dosing routine and will put it to a true test.

Noisy water pump
3 Star Review   By skimmer on Marine Depot - Sep 19, 2010

After one run back to complain to the fish store where I bought my Coralife Super Skimmer Model 125, I managed after a couple of days to get the bubble level down and stop overflowing the collection cup. Then there was the leak in the O-ring, which cost a stained floor, that was fixed with some plumber tape. Once through all of that, skimming works fine and it collects a lot of smelly brown stuff. But gradually the water pump has gotten more noisy. Now it's so noisy that it overpowers even the carbon water filter and makes it a challenge to sit and "enjoy" the tank. I've taken the pump apart, and the problem seems to be the water fan wheel attached to the magnet. The design has a slight gap between the magnet and the wheel, which makes the wheel move back and forth when the pump is on creating the noisy rattling sound. Has anyone else experience this problem and found a solution?

Marine Depot
Skimmer bargain
4 Star Review   By GEORGE FELT on Marine Depot - Aug 25, 2010

Skimmers have their quirks - this one is no exception. First, the problems: 1) salt will block the air feed tube (easily cleaned by forced rinsing but you have to take it apart to do this). Bubble formation declines slowly as this occurs - deal with it as above. 2) Bubble formation will eventually decline as the needle wheel gets mucked up with deposits. Clean it ! (run the system in a closed loop with vinegar or something to disolve the salts). Now it works again... 3) Amount of skimmate pulled out of the water depends on fine adjustment of gate valve. Learn how it works and deal with it. 4) Skimmate pull is very sensitive to water level in sump. If you don't have an auto top-off system it will vary considerably. 5) Water change will set off a geyser of bubbles and throw off your previously perfect gate valve setting. Deal with it by reducing flow through gate valve before doing water change, then adjusting it later. The good news - this thing pulls a ton of nasty out of the water column once you learn how to use it and work within its limitations. It is a terrific value and I am actually purchasing my third one. If you are a wealthy "set it and forget it" type don't buy this, but if you are on a budget and you don't mind "tuning" it as the need arises then it is a winner.

CORALLIFE 125 SKIMMER
4 Star Review   By JOHN REEFER75 on Marine Depot - Jul 3, 2010

This skimmer is working for me and its getting the job done.I might be able to help for those of you that are having a promblem adjusting your new skimmer. The skimmers have a diffrent control/adjustment knob thats differnt from the old style skimmers. The old skimmers use to leak around the adjustment knob. I had 2 skimmers that leaked around the shaft of the knob.I had to cut the whole shaft out and replaceit with a gate valve and it worked!I upgraded the skimmer with a MD5 FRACTIONATING IMPELLER/VENTURI made by DANNER.Thay are one of the best pumps for the money.I have noticed the new knobs are not the best. You need to check your (control knob/red notch stop) and make sure that its to the right of the (gray notch stop) if its not (PULL UP EASY)on THE RED KNOB it will come up about a 1/2 inch from the base. Then pushback down. For some reason this control knob can turn 360 and if its not in the right position you skimmer will overflow and you will never get the adjustment you need . The new pump seems to work well butmake sure you break in this skimmer at the lowest settingand yes the collection cups are interchangeable with old 220 fits on the 125 and the new 125 fits on the 220.Like all things nothing is perfect. If for some reason your skimmer is not to your specks try upgrading the pump. With a MD5 OR MD7 DANNER MAKE SURE ITS THE FRACTIONATING/VENTURI STYLE. BECAUSE DANNER has OTHER STYLES OF PUMPS THAT LOOK THE SAME. I hope this helps.Happy Reefing :)

Good as ozone reactor
3 Star Review   By rayray on Marine Depot - Apr 11, 2010

I bought this specifically to run ozone on my 180 SPS reef and it works great(as a cheap alternative to a ozone reactor setup). As a skimmer it is poor, so I have another real, giant skimmer. BUT there is good mixing in the chamber, it came with an outlet cup that is ready to hold a fistfull of carbon and the unit is small is small. Also, I added a little cup of dry carbon for the 2 air exhausts: above the skimmate cup (that never collects much skim anyway, which is good) and from the air outlet from the skimmate exit. I ran ozone safe tubing from ozonizer to venturi, and connected the pump to rection chamber with ozone safe 3/4" tubing. The venturi is strong enough that no airpump is need to the ozonizer or air drier. Is this thing really intended to be a skimmer??? A tunze 9010 or 9015 is smaller and 10x more powerful... but isn't as perfectly suited for ozone as this is.

When I first started with saltwater fish this skimmer was in my budget range. BUT like anything else in life you get what you pay for. The very first time I used this product water all over the place when I finally got it right it worked well for about six months . Not a good product at all save your money and go for a better skimmer trust me you get what you pay for.

Engineering Disaster
1 Star Review   By STEVEN L on Marine Depot - Mar 22, 2010

I usually wait a while before I give reviews on equipment so I have the full picture to share. I bought this in October of 2009 and after 5 months I will have to say this is an absolute piece of crap. There is more to this equipment than just not skimming that entirely great. I have spent countless hours setting this up to skim efficiently and then the power flickers for just a second due to an electrical storm or outage and...woosh...the thing restarts and INSTANTLY overflows the cup and the 2 liter remote overflow container onto my floor. This happened so frequently that I eventually had to make a special overflow container that would dump the water back in the aquarium when (not if) it overflowed so it wouldn’t spill out onto my floor. I can’t even begin tell you how many times this thing has “freaked out” and dumped gallons of water all over the floor because it filled the cup and overflow to due a power fluctuation. I hope you’re not on vacation when it happens. If you plan to use it in the sump like I did, make sure it is at least 6 inches deep to adequately cover the large noisy pump. If your sump is small you are going to have a tough time fitting this motor. The little basket that controls the micro-bubbles is also a disaster in engineering. The plastic/ foam mesh in the basket acts as a filter whether you want it too or not. When the basket gets dirty, it slowly starts restricting the water outflow and stealthily water backs up into the cup and overflow and a couple of gallons goes onto the floor. There have also been a couple episodes of leaking around the o-ring too. It was sealing just fine and then trickles of water came from around the seal hours after it was seated with a problem. Once again water leaked onto the floor. Not a lot but enough to keep everything damp until I realized what was going on. There are many other skimmers in this price range that will do the job better and much more worry free. Don’t buy it!!!

Not Bad
4 Star Review   By RYAN on Marine Depot - Mar 21, 2010

It works well on my 135 gallon tank but it is a little touchy on the adjustments. I have overflowed it a few times by not having it set right.

Not a bad skimmer
4 Star Review   By TYLER on Marine Depot - Nov 26, 2009

Unfortunately I really haven't had any other skimmers to compare this to, so I can't speak on the amount of gunk it pulls compared to any other. I have the 65 model on a 55g sps tank, pretty loaded up. I made one mod to mine. Where the air tube goes into the pump, I broke off that little plastic nipple, bored out the hole and siliconed the air tube directly into the pump. This really let me fine tune the skimmer compared to before. At this point it's set and I pull out a good cups worth of gunk just about bi weekly. Early on, though, I did have some of those flooding issues, so that is a concern with this skimmer. I would recommend it despite this flaw seeing how simply the fix is. I'd like to upgrade to a 125 or 220 on my 55g tank to see how they'd perform!

coralife super skimmer
2 Star Review   By STEPHANIE ENSLEY on Marine Depot - Oct 27, 2009

I bought the 220 gal model from someone that flooded there floor with it very touchy machine. I recommend marking the dial nod with a sharpy to help fine tune it. Everything could be fine then you wake up with water on your floor and your power stip fried. I run a tube now off the collection cup to a big fancy vase. If you are lucky enough to get it set right mark the spot with a sharpie are never touch it again. When you clean the collection cup unplug it dont turn the dial down. If you can afford it a cpr backpack or aquac is much much beter. Dont go cheap or you'll be sorry.

Horrible
1 Star Review   By SHAUN MISHLER on Marine Depot - Aug 30, 2009

The bottom line on this skimmer is that it is horrible. When you can get it to work right it pulls an average amount of gunk out of the tank but you will spend all of your time constantly adjusting this skimmer just for it to perform average. Water level and even water temperature and room temperature will effect the performance of this skimmer. If any one of the three things listed above change even slightly it will either overflow the skimmer or the skimmer will just stop working. Purchasing this skimmer has been my one single greatest mistake I made in the start up of my tank.

This skimmer is the choice with anyone operating on a budget. It does the job and takes less money out the wallet. I would buy again if I had to.

Works like a charm...
4 Star Review   By Patrick on Marine Depot - Jun 20, 2009

Relatively easy to set up and works very well. The break in period was less than a day. In the first week, it produced almost a gallon of gunk from my tank that has a very low bio-load. It was a little tricky getting it dialed in, but now that it is, it works great!

Nice
4 Star Review   By DAVID M. DELP on Marine Depot - May 14, 2009

The Coralife Super Skimmer is very nice and creates a large amount of microbubbles.....great for skimming! No break in time necessary for mine. It started skimming right away. My only complaint is that it's a little difficult to adjust(heighwise) if you have a fairly shallow sump and you are trying to hang it on the outside. I didn't have enough room in my sump to install it inside the sump, so I hung it on the outside. It took a little tinkering to adjust it where it would stop putting a shear fog of bubbles into your main tank. I would recommend it though. Works great.

220
5 Star Review   By JOHN HENBY on Marine Depot - May 9, 2009

I have a 220 that I picked up used. Well new...because the purchaser failed to read directions! The needle wheel pump needs to be 3 to 4" max to the top of the pump...any more= no bubbles! He had 12" of hose on it! Go figure! Shortened it and it works flawlessly! The adjustment is precise but pulls about a half cup a day of dark nasty skimmate from my gin clear water!

Not all that impressed.
2 Star Review   By MIKE SWANKHOUSE on Marine Depot - Jan 7, 2009

Guess I should have spent more. This skimmer just does not seem to get that much stuff out. I have it set in my first stage of my sump and I have since had to modify it to one make it easier to adjust to the bubble level I want and two get the micro bubbles under control. The little foam filled overflow cup just wasn't doing it for me so I used a compression coupler and pipe to make an adjustable slide outlet pipe that lets me perfectly set my height in the skimmer. I then put some foam around the outlet pipe so the water coming out flows back down to the sump through the foam.

Marine Depot
Touchy
3 Star Review   By ZACH on Marine Depot - Dec 2, 2008

This is my first skimmer, and for the first few months of owning it I was ready to throw it out the window several times. The water height adjustment dial seems to do nothing for the first 3/4 of a turn, then when you get into the zone where it actually matters, the adjustment line between no skimming and overflowing is like 1/64th of a turn. I got it running fairly well by putting it in my sump in a chamber that maintains constant water height, not turning the knob when I clean it, just unplugging it, and also putting it's collection container in the sump also. If it does overflow then worse case scenario is it dumps some dilluted skimmate back into the tank, rather than emptying my system onto the floor (pick your poison). It has pulled some amazing gunk out of my system, but if I ever have some cash burning a hole in my pocket then it's probably going to get replaced.

Think Twice
1 Star Review   By CRAIG on Marine Depot - Aug 7, 2008

Ok...this thing was a pain to set up and I know what I am doing. I is on at 54G tank and struggles to pull a cup a week. Ideally, a skimmer should pull out a cup a day (or at least every other day). Yes, I set it up by the instructions and then made many modifications...I finally gave up. The micro-bubble diffuser is pure junk. I have spent countless hours trying mesh filter bags over the outlet...no good. This skimmer may be ok for a very small tank...but is worthless on a larger one.

Do not buy this
1 Star Review   By Hugo on Marine Depot - Jul 23, 2008

Works alright but micro bubbles escape the diffuser box which does nothing to stop them, the pump and the box look horrible in the aquarium. Very sensitive to everything and it is very hard to adjust the settings to get everything perfect.Do not buy this, too much of a pain, just go with the aquac remora, so much better and so much easier.

JUNK
1 Star Review   By rtrumps on Marine Depot - Jun 30, 2008

This skimmer is JUNK. I had mine with an auto top off never got it to skim, either it was to wet or not at all. It skimmed half my tank onto the floor, promptly put on an auction site and sold. You get what you pay for, save your money.

skimmer
3 Star Review   By DAVID LUMBLEY on Marine Depot - May 15, 2008

The skimmer works great, however, Coralife customer service is not good. My pump went out and was told to call them. I have called them called them. The 3 techs that I was referred to never returns calls. I leave voice mails repeatedly. I am going with another brand. Other than that this skimmers was excellent until you need another needle wheel pump.

Junk

This was a total piece of junk. It started ok after the initial break in but then it just stopped skimming for no reason. There was plenty of bubbles but no skimate. I had to buy a new skimmer which is doing very well.

set it and forget it
5 Star Review   By WALTER JOHNSON on Marine Depot - Mar 29, 2008

I just have to say this product works great. After being in the reef hobby since 1995, this protien skimmer works great and for the money you can't go wrong. I have tired cheaper skimmers, that your always messing with, to get to work, this unit,if you read the instruction works as its designed and my corals love it too.

Mediocrity
2 Star Review   By JOE on Marine Depot - Mar 16, 2008

I had this in a sump, it didnt work. I now have it in my tank, and it still rarely works. Either it skims way too dry, or it overflows. Its a very cheaply built piece, and fortunately the price is cheap as well. you get what you pay for, and I would recommend moving up in the world of skimmers the first time, rather than upgrading!

Coralife SS
3 Star Review   By MICHAEL L on Marine Depot - Feb 15, 2008

I purchased this skimmer to replace the Aqua C Remora. This skimmer is much more efficient than the Remora but is more sensitive to water level changes. The bottom line if you want something that does an ok job but requires no adjustments get the Remora. If you want a more efficient skimmer that pulls more organic componds out of your water get something with a needle wheel. This skimmer is probably good to about 40 gallons.

mmmm, smelly gunk!
4 Star Review   By THOMAS WIGLEY on Marine Depot - Feb 5, 2008

I have been using this skimmer for almost two years. It is installed in a sump. I have had mine overflow once. I had the adjustment set wrong, once I fixed that, no more overflow. This skimmer has some flaws, one no drain on the collection cup, two touchy water level adjustment. I empty the collection cup weekly, when I do a water change. The only real problem that I have with this skimmer is that the air inlet gets calcium build up in two to three weeks and has to be reamed out. Other than that, this is a great skimmer! I would recommend it.

Nice skimmer
5 Star Review   By BEN on Marine Depot - Nov 23, 2007

I have had this skimmer hob set up for several weeks now on a 30gal reef. I amazed at the amount of smelly dark skimmate that this thing is removing from my aquarium. While it was difficult to assemble, it took only 24 hrs to break-in. I was a little disappointed with the alignment of the inlet and outlet tubes. I have not seen the overflow issue or the difficulty in adjusting the skimmer that other reviewers are describing. I would definitely buy this again.

Great Value
5 Star Review   By BERM on Marine Depot - Nov 5, 2007

Once this skimmer is broken in, it performs flawlessly. You need to keep your water level constant and adjust the skimmer accordingly. It works great if you have an automatic water level float that tops off automatically. Would recommend removing every month and immersing it in a bucket of fresh water and let it run for a few minutes to clean the holes on the pinwheel that create the microbubbles.

good
5 Star Review   By aznstylexxx on Marine Depot - Oct 29, 2007

I've read some negative comments on this skimmer. I haven't had much of a problem with it. I'm currently running this on a 47gallon TALL tank HOB. It pulls dark stinky junk outta the tank. yes, it does create a degree of micro bubbles in the tank; usually only when i do a water change though. So it isn't much of a problem. For the price, i think it is well worth it; especially when you're new to the hobby and dont wanna pay $400+ for a protein skimmer.

Great value
4 Star Review   By PL on Marine Depot - Aug 1, 2007

I was have time diffecult time keeping the pH stable in my 24 gal Aquapod and decided to try a skimmer. I did a hang on tank install which would have been simple if I didn't have a UV unit, power head for the nano-chiller and pump for the filter already in the sump. This unit is EXTREMELy touchy so go easy when making adjustments to the bubble level or you will end up like I did with a wet floor. The good news is the water chemistry has never been better, all the reef critters are happy as clams and I have been able to cut down on water changes. I followed the advice given by other reviewers (after the over flow incident) and have had zero problems.
