API XP Canister Filter
4 Star Review   By KURT STUDIER on PetStore.com - Nov 7, 2013

Excellent product would buy again. I would get the best hose clamps that would be available locally. The plastic ones that come with the filter are not secure. There is no noise from the filter at all! The only reason for the 4 is that the hose clamps are iffy at best. I will buy this again for the rest of my tanks. I especially like the 4 tray filter options.

Happy fish
5 Star Review   By BARBARA TRITT on PetStore.com - Sep 6, 2013

After careful consideration and research chose the Filstar XP. Have had 2 Marineland cannister pumps in the past that worked fairly well until recently. The second one developed a leaking problem after only about 2 years. Decided to choose another brand. Set up for the Filstar XP was simple. The instructions were well written. Parts came as advertised. Start up was a breeze. Pump is very quiet. Filtration for my 100 gallon fresh water tank is amazing. Water appears very clear after only 2 days. Water very clear before. Was surprised to notice a difference. Have had fish tank for about 25 years and Fistar welcome addition. Would recommend this cannister filter to anyone.

3 Star Review   By DAVID MILLER on PetStore.com - Apr 29, 2013

This works GREAT!! Got the 75 gallon unit for my Red Ear Sliders and it works well for keeping thier nasty tank clean. Ordered a second for the fish tank.. Only issue that keeps it from 5 stars is that it can be tough to prime. Ignore the directions, and put the pickup in the water. will save you a mess and lots of frustration.

Watch out it LEAKS
1 Star Review   By DON SMITH on Marine Depot - Mar 9, 2012

The water leaks out at the electrical cord. The troubleshooting guid identifies the fix as the in n out water tubing must be putting too much pressure on the unit - but I keep trying to fix/adjust & nothing seems to work for more than a few hours. Anyone for water all over the floor? I didn't think so.

Great filter at a great price
5 Star Review   By carl87gt on PETCO - Jan 30, 2012    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I bought my filter back in July of 2007 and it has been running strong for almost 5 years now. I love this filter. Easy to prime (have only had to do it the one time and never again after cleaning), never had any leaks, very quiet (I put mine on an old mouse pad to quiet it even more but it IS a very quiet filter). Well made, seals well, keeps the aquarium very clean, easy to clean and change media. I have used other filter but the XP3 has been my favorite. Don't believe me - do a search online - these filters are rated pretty everywhere.

Good Filter but had issues from begining.
3 Star Review   By Spence21 on PETCO - Nov 25, 2011    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I have the Rena filstar xp2 and I like the filter alot because it does an amazing job of filtering the water in my aquarium. The downside however is that ive experienced alot of problems with mine since the day i got it. The biggest problem is having alot of air trapped in the filter which causes the propeler to not sit in the water properly and the aquarium will be FULL of bubbles for acouple days. The filter media is kinda pricey but they dont need completely changed for acouple months.

Marine Depot
Pretty Decent filter for $$$$
5 Star Review   By PAMELA CHICOINE on Marine Depot - Sep 24, 2011

I replaced an Ehiem Proffessional 2 with this filter. The Ehiem ran flawlessly for 7 years but then started leaking between the base and the top. My plan was to buy the Ehiem Pro 3 2075 but after reading 30 or so poor reviews, I reconsidered. Apparently they also leak, brand new, right out of the box. I purchased the Rena Filstar xp3 for about $120 less then the Ehiem. The quality is not quite on par as everything seems just a little bit flimsier but the flow rate is 20gph stronger and it seems to work just fine. I leave the lower chamber clear so it can become a Filterfeeding Zone. The mid-chamber got my old Ehiem sponge plus a couple of the courser sponge filters that came with the Filstar. The top compartment holds 4 Chemi-Pure pouches with filter floss sandwiching them. All in all, this filter has adaquate capacity to function as I need it to on my 120 gallon reef tank. I only open it every 3 to 4 months, so I'm hoping that will help with the longevity of the latches and seal. This filter comes with all the media you need to get it up and running, although I don't use the the Bio-Chem Zorb as I don't find it to be on par with Chemi-Pure, and I don't use bio-balls of any type, but the media alone would come to a significant sum of money if you needed to purchase separately. The esthetics of the filter isn't great, but I keep it in the stand so it's no big deal. Also the filter runs silently, but so did my Ehiem, so no change there. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a compact, functionally well-designed, filter for a decent price.

Easy, quiet, workhorse!
5 Star Review   By CAROL SHARP on Marine Depot - Apr 7, 2011

We purchased the Rena FilStar xP3 for our 110 gallon freshwater cichlid tank. Setup was so simple. This filter is very easy to prime with no mess at all. The xP3 runs very, very quietly, almost silent. Our fish had been without filtration for 2 days, and the xP3 cleared their water up very quickly. We and our fish are very happy with this filter.

Marine Depot
Worth every penny.
5 Star Review   By BRYAN SMITH on Marine Depot - Nov 23, 2010

I highly recommend Rena Filstar canisters. They're sturdy, reliable and quiet with a large number of filter media possibilities. I have been using Filstar canisters for about 5 years. I have 3, an XP2 running my refugium on a 75G reef, an XP3 on a 45G planted fresh and an XP4 on a 150G fresh. I have never been anything but pleased with them. I have never had a microbubble problem from them and they have always operated very quietly. If you have a noisy one or are getting microbubbles then you are likely getting air in to the canister and should check all your O-rings and hose fittings. You should check them every time you clean it especially the large lid ring. My Filstars have been completely reliable for years and I have found them quite durable. Mine have been through the ringer a time or two and are still purring away.

Marine Depot
I'm Impressed
5 Star Review   By PAUL F on Marine Depot - Sep 5, 2010

Had double set of Magnum 350's paired bio-wheel outlets. Huge big hassle to maintain and restart, and you had to choose between carbon cartridge or polishing cartridge, can't have both. The sleeve style pad was also awkward to spray through during cleaning. Replaced with two large bio-wheel Emperors, easier maintenance but water that that clean. Switched to a smaller 20L turtle tank, even messier than the 60g. Refreshing to have a product work exactly as advertised. I use the XP1 attached to the undergravel filter plate and this is the perfect setup for turtles, and as far as I can see, but freshwater as well. This way you don't need the bio stars or ceramic rings as you get way more surface area with the 2-1/2" layer of fine gravel. VerI take advantage of the open nature of arranging the media to focus on physical/mechanical filtration. Two 30ppi sponges, Micro, then Super Micro Progressive. I'm sure some other cannisters allow you to arrange your media also, but they cost double or more for the same capacity. What to improve on? I can't think of anything. For the hoses, don't try to push them on straight-on. Wiggle from opposite sides and they will slowly work their way in. This is the problem with silicon type hoses, but its worth it, result is no leaks and very flexible routing. People with air bubbles, did you get them 2" or more onto the pipe ends? They seal very tight so I don't even use the hose clamps.

Hose difficulty
3 Star Review   By CONRAD SUNDHOLM on Marine Depot - Jul 29, 2010

The filter does a great job on my 40 tank. The hose connections are exceedingly difficult, On my first two attempts I had air leaks that sucked in air to create filter noise. It is very hard to force the connecting hoses on far enough, especially when you are lying on the floor trying to make the hoses fit on the filter itself. I had greater success when I used the disconnect to remove them from the filter. Eventually I was forced to go out and buy metal clamps to finally close the air leaks. The plasctic clamps were not strong enough. I would only recommend this filter to a very smart muscle builder with the pushing power to securely fasten the hoses. Everythig else worke just fine - whisper quiet

Marine Depot
Reliable but has issues
2 Star Review   By JOE W. on Marine Depot - Jun 19, 2010

Pros: 1) Very reliable. Have had for 4 years with no problems with the pump. 2) Relatively quiet. 3)Lots of ways to modify. Cons: 1) Produces TONS of microbubbles! This is the biggest problem with this filter. I have replumbed the unit and contacted Rena tech support to no avail. Works fine if you don't clean or touch it. Seriously, I can simply ajust the output and my 60 gallon reef fills with microbubbles to the point that it's difficult to make out the fish. Takes about 2 DAYS to clear up. 2) Overpriced.

After reviewing all the canister filters on the markets. I went with the Rena xp3. Could'nt ask for a better filter. I am so happy with it that I bought another for my just now 75 gal tank. This filter is easy to maintain,it quiet, parts are readily available, media trays are very versatile and affordable. Top Seal Leaks Live A Sieve
1 Star Review   By Archangel55 on PETCO - May 18, 2010    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

On initial setup, the top seal of the unit leaked as soon as the unit was connected to my 55 gallon tank. I followed the Trouble Shooting guide and still can't find a solution. Guess I'll have to find a slightly thicker O-Ring on my own or throw the whole unit away. Don't waste your money on this product.

Junk
1 Star Review   By Steve12 on PETCO - May 18, 2010    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

Rena/Mars Fishcare is the worst company I have ever dealt with. The customer service is a joke. If you can get someone to answer the phone or return your messages all they will do is make you jump through hoops until you are so frustrated you just give up. The whole time your fish suffer. I purchased an XP filter and it quit working after 2 weeks. You're better off spending your money on ANY OTHER FILTER

5 Star Review   By CARLOS MEDINA on Marine Depot - Apr 28, 2010

The filter is really quiet and powerful. It is also very easy to maintain.I have only 2 small complaints about it: It should have a switch to be able to turn it off when servicing without having to disconnect it every time and it should come with longer hoses for bigger tanks.

Great for aquatic turtles!
5 Star Review   By LoveTurtles on PETCO - Mar 22, 2010    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

We aquired two aquatic turtles nearly 3 years ago. They are very dirty and require frequent water changes, sometimes more than once a week without filtration. Thus we tried an underwater filter designed for turtles and then a hang-off-the-tank power filter. Neither would work for long before they would be totally clogged. We decided to try the Rena Filstar xP2 Canister Filter despite the cost. We have never regretted spending the money. It's the best filter we've ever used and it is so easy to clean, in just minutes. It's amazing at how clean it keeps the tank. The filter has many layers of sponge filters to collect waste product and it definitely does the job. There are also many configurations to using different media in the filter depending on your needs.... +/- charcoal or ammonia chips, +/- bio media, and foam filter pads with different pore sizes that can be combined in any way you like. This model (the xP2) is for tanks up to 75 gallons, but we are using it on about half that amount of water because of the amount of waste that turtles produce. I can't see why the Rina Filstar wouldn't work for any aquarium up to 75 gallons though since there is much less waste. I would definitely recommend this product!

Easy to Maintain
5 Star Review   By mcw1976 on PETCO - Mar 13, 2010    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I purchased this filter about a month ago. Runs silent, water is always crystal clear. Monthly maintenance is so easy. Last filter was a HOT Magnum, cut my filter maintenance time in half (now about 10-15 min from disconnect to reconnect) Highly recommend!

Leaks
5 Star Review   By SanDiego on PETCO - Mar 3, 2010    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

My leak came back, so I called Rena Filstar. I cut my hoses a little shorter as suggested. And no more leaks! If a problem happens call the Rena, I talked to a person right from the beginning. Petco was sending me a replcement filter that I cancelled with only a few questions. Looking back, I installed it wrong and I had to make a phone call to make it right. Thanks for the help Rena and Petco. Hard to admit.

Simply easy
5 Star Review   By JEFFREY SHERMAN on Marine Depot - Mar 1, 2010

This is my second RENA canister filter. I have a 150g freshwater tank and find that two smaller filters work much more effeciently than 1 larger capacity filter. These filters are increadibly quiet, efficient and combine all the necessary elements of filtration into one easy-to-use system. Cleaning is relatively simple...although the replacement products can be pricey. Still, when money is "no object" I would recomment this product hands down!

One of the best!
5 Star Review   By ADAM B. on Marine Depot - Feb 12, 2010

I've been using this style filter for over 3 years now on a variety of different tanks and setups. It is fantastic!! It has taken a beating from moving and letting it sit outside for 5 months while my gf was supervising my tanks. It is EXTREMELY quiet! You would never know it was on, even in a dead quiet room. Very simple to setup, and easy to maintain. Great filter!

I purchased a 36gal corner tank a year ago with a Fluval 305.Must say it did not keep my tank water clear it kept it cloudy. Then two months later I went and brought a Cascade 700,gave it a chance and still my tank is cloudy. What I have noticed is that those filters have too many by-pass won't clean your water 100%. Than finally I went and brought a Rena XP2 and WOW!!! my tank water is clear very clear the next day I installed it.Three months later my water is still clear and very queit. The best Filter anyone can buy.

I Love This Filter
5 Star Review   By dinodoc on PETCO - Sep 14, 2009    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

Of all the aquarium filters I have had over the years, this is by far my favorite. It is incredibly quiet. You don't have to disconnect hoses or reprime in order to clean & replace filters--just pop the lever & remove the unit; everything else remains in place in the tank! Maybe not the cheapest in terms of replacing filter cartridges, but worth every penny.

4 Star Review   By surenVY on PETCO - Sep 2, 2009    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I had this filter for just 2 weeks and seems to be doing its job. Installation guide was well illustrated, only issue I had was to connect the hoses to the intake and output. Before putting the hoses, wipe oil, grease to make the tubes fit properly into the attachments. Other than that I had no issues. sound is very negligible. came with some bio-stars. I went to petco and purchased ceramic rings to compensate

Great Design
5 Star Review   By ZACHARY NICKEY on Marine Depot - Mar 4, 2009

It's not hard to see why everyone rants and raves about this system. As a start, it is relatively inexpensive for an advanced and high capacity canister filter. It is a state of the art filtration unit that users of any level can operate. The instructions are clear and easy to work with, the mounting hardware is excellent and the included parts allows user customization, the media basket for even the smaller XP1 is rather large, and the pump moves an impressive amount of water for a small unit. The pump moves so much water that you can use this as your only filter system and not have to worry about particles floating around in the water. I have my setup configured as a biological-only (just media) system, but the included media allows you to use chemical, biological, and mechanical filtration, or a combination. Additionally, given Rena is part of API, you have the best chemical filtration media on the market designed specefically for your filter, and it is really nice to have that luxury. Parts, media, and accessories are easy to find for this item as well. This is one well designed filter system and I recommend it to all users!

Outstanding
5 Star Review   By VGreen on PETCO - Jan 16, 2009    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I purchased the xp2. This canister filter system is without a doubt the best filter system that I have ever had. I have two aquariums, a 29 gallon and 75 gallon. I purchased the xp2 for my 75 gallon, however I am thinking seriously about buying one for the 29 gallon also. It is extremely easy to set-up and install. It is the easiest filter system to service on the market from what I have found. Once set-up, I only have to replace the carbon filter bag once a month and do a 10-25% water change and the water stays crystal clear. VERY VERY GOOD SYSTEM !! WELL WORTH EVERY DIME!! WILL SAVE TIME AND MONEY IN THE LONG RUN!!

I can't believe people think this is a good filter. My 55 gallon tank got cloudy and foul smelling in less then 24 hours. Never had that problem with the Fluval 304, which is still running after 6 years.......There are a couple features I DO like- the motor housing removes easily and the quick disconnect feature is a little easier than the 304. But overall NOT a good filter. Spend a little more and go for a Fluval.

I just got my xp2 yesterday and so far I'm extremely happy with it. Setting it up wasn't too hard but attaching the tubes was almost impossible. They tell you to push them 2 onto the plastic but you pretty much need to be a body builder. Also, the xp2 didn't come with the biomedia, so I had to go to the petstore for those. I have this on my 20Gal tank with 2 turtles and fish. The water was crystal clear within minutes!

I purchased the XP2 for my 65 gallon Hexagon tank with seahorses, snails and a damsel. First, the shipment was really fast. I order it Sunday night, it was shipped on Monday and I got it Friday. Second, this filter is amazingly quiet and efficient. It cleaned my cloudy tank in a few hours and it hasn't been cloudy since. This is the best filter I have had, which includes Magnums. Plus this was on sale.

RENA XP1
5 Star Review   By McNally on PETCO - Sep 2, 2008    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

This week-end we installed the XP 1 on our 29 gal. tank. The hardest part was getting the hoses slid up the recommended 2 on the pipes. Finally used a little pet. jelly & that worked fine. We're on our 3rd day, so of course it should look great, but this filter is SO quiet, and the water is so crystal clear, I swear it looks like you could drink it! (No, I won't!!) I'm seriously thinking about the XP2 for our 55 gal. at the office. I definitely recommend this filter.

Very Happy
5 Star Review   By DOUG BAYLISS on Marine Depot - May 20, 2008

I'm very happy with this canister filter. I had underground filters for decades (fresh water). We mistakenly purchased 3 Piranha fish, non carnivorous but they grew very quickly and now very large. The water in the tank became very murky. I installed the RENA FilStar xP2 and within 24 hours the water became and is still crystal clear. Highly recommended.

Second purchase
5 Star Review   By ROB on Marine Depot - Mar 19, 2008

This is the second RENA filter I have purchased. The first was a smaller unit for a 30+ gallon tank with angelfish. IT worked so well, that I purchased this one for my 100 gallon tank that had 2 smaller canister filters on it. The RENA is much easier to clean and service - a plus for a tank that is located under the basement stairs. The tank is clean and the fish are doing well - what else could you ask for?

Reliable, Efficient, Quiet Filter
5 Star Review   By Doomy on PETCO - Feb 12, 2008    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

When trying to decide on a canister filter for my 55-gallon aquarium, I saw a lot of conflicting reviews and information. I finally decided on the Rena Filstar XP2, and I couldn't be happier. It's reliable, it never makes a sound, and it has GREAT water-polishing capabilities, which is a MUST with my lime-laden water. Even if I don't clean it as often as I should, the filter media does a wonderful job, and disassembly for maintenance is a breeze. It's the only thing I need to create current in my freshwater tank (although a saltwater would still require powerheads), and it has a very small footprint. The only issue I experienced was a defective hose clamp out-of-the-box, so a few spares might be good to have on-hand. Other than that, the only complaint I can think of is that the Bio-Chem Stars were not included in the kit. All in all, this is a GREAT filter with easy assembly and maintenance, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone seeking a canister.

5 Star Review   By ZooCrew on PETCO - Feb 9, 2008    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I own the XP3 and I've owned it about a month now. I'm using it on a 30 gallon tank that houses by my red eared slider turtle, but I will be using it on a 75 gallon tank in a few weeks when my turtle is moved to the new bigger tank. The filter works great, it keeps my water crystal clear, and keeps all the ammonia and nitrates out of the water. The filter runs very quietly, and I love that it has an enourmous amount of space to add different types of media in the baskets. Highly recommended!

I have one XP-3 on my 125 gallon tank. It does a great job of keeping the tank clean. The directions for setup and cleaning were easy to follow and I had it up and running in no time. It is so quiet I can not even hear it going. I love how I can pull the lever up and disconnect it from the hoses without spilling a drop. Cleaning it is a breeze. There is all kinds of different filter media options available for this filter and it comes with either a spray bar outlet or a jet nozzle. What more can you ask for?

AWESOME
5 Star Review   By BABYJIZAY on PETCO - Feb 6, 2008    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I bought this because I have a discus 55 gal tank and needed great filtration. I previously had an aquaclear 150, which was pretty good but oh so loud. If you know anything about Discus, you know they say you have to do weekly water changes and keep water immaculate. Ever since I bought this filter, there is absolutely no sound coming from my tank, and I do a 75% water change every 3 to 4 weeks. It stays CRYSTAL clear, and my fish have been quite healthy for the past 8 months. I have the XP3, and I keep just the bio chem, the 4 filter pads, a basket full of stars/ceramic rings, and the micro pad. I clean out the filter once a month as well. I have 6 discus, 40 cardinal tetras, 12 corys, and 3 snails. This filter is amazing considering the load.

Not What it Says
3 Star Review   By Sallasar on PETCO - Feb 6, 2008    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

This product is easy to use, customizable, and very quiet. However, I purchasd the Filstar Xp3 for my 150 gal tank, which is rated for tanks of up to 175 gals, and found the product to be vastly insufficient for the filteration needs of my tank. This product would probably be great for tanks up to about half of its rated max, but it is not capable of doing what its specs say it can.

Good luck with 2 RENA filters
5 Star Review   By Likin'SaltMoreThanFresh on Marine Depot - Jan 12, 2008

I'm currently using two RENA canister filters: an xP1 empty in a 29G marine for circulation (and the occasional carbon treatment) and an xP2 in a 95G fresh for filtering. Very easy/convenient to maintain the filter. Also, the motor always readily starts up again after maintenance. For filtering, nice to have the additional basket of the xP2. If you're considering the xP3, I think I'd rather have two xP2 filters (and maintain on opposite cycles).

Works Great
5 Star Review   By JOHN LINDSAY on Marine Depot - Nov 30, 2007

This canister filter works great! It by far has kept my 75 gallon freshwater clearer than my Marineland Penguin 350B did in my 20 gallon! I have two comets and a pleco, so these fish are dirty. I'm impressed with this filter. The baskets are 6" by 6" and about 4" deep. I am replacing the bio-stars with SeaChem Matrix media, as well as adding SeaChem Purigen to polish the water even more. It's also quiet and easy to install and clean. Fits under my stand in one whole cabinet. Water flow seems high, and the polishing filter does clog easily meaning it cleans the water very well. I'm looking to get another one as soon as I can find the cash!

The Rena Filstar is an excellent filter. It is ultra-quiet, it doesn't make a sound! My tank water is always crystal clear, and cleaning the filter couldn't be easier! It seems that people having difficulty must have other sources for their problems, or maybe they are just inexperienced fish keepers.

Easy set-up. Easy maintenance. Works flawlessly. I just wish I bought the 3 for the added space.

Poor Performance
1 Star Review   By Martin on PETCO - Dec 29, 2006    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I installed a new XP3 cannister filter on a 75 gallon aquarium and my aquarium went from clear to cloudy in 3 days. The water quality continue to get worst and with no visible signs of filtration. The pumps works great and water is circulating, but no filtration. Calling the help desk for assistance was a waste of time. I was brush off and told to get water tested. My water was tested more than once by different sources and found to be good each time. I DO NOT recommend this system. DONT BELIVEVE THE HYPE.. by a good cannister filter from another vendor. Don't expect service from RENA, they are always to busy and will tell you soo.

The Worst Filter and Wrong Reviews
1 Star Review   By i1mare on PETCO - Nov 21, 2006    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I Just got my Rena Filstar Xp2 few days ago, I installed yesterday. The setup is easy, but the plumbing part is a little confuse. You will know if you are going to buy it. But I don't recommend it at all. After I set it up and run it, the filter was very very loud, trust me, you can't sleep with that in your bedroom. The second problem is that this filstar xp2 filter doesn't work well with a 29 gallon saltwater tank, I run it overnight, I Hardly see any different in the water, it is still cloudy. I am very disappointted with all the good reviews I have read before I bought this filter. they are just not true.

Rena Filstar Canister Filter XP3
5 Star Review   By Chad on PETCO - Sep 11, 2006    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

Just bought this item for a 60g saltwater tank...install was in under 10min very easy. Unit is VERY quiet. Priming took one time only. Cleaned the system in 10min and refill its self (no need to reprime). MY TANK WATER WAS CLEAR IN 6 HOURS after I filled tank half full of water then put my LIVE sand in and filled it up, then I turned on the filter 6 hours later crystal clear.

5 Star Review   By KRAK on PETCO - Aug 18, 2006    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I was searching in many shops for fairly prized filters and found this Rena Xp3 Filstar. This is by far the best filter i ever had ,it is so easy to assemble and have tried it for a 360L Malawi and it worked perfectly. I fully recommend this product and all other Rena products

These filters by far are the best. Im using one on my freshwater 75 tank, been using it for over a year and not one problem. Im getting ready to get another for my salt tank. You dont have to think twice about this purchase.

Rena XP3
5 Star Review   PETCO    ( See more reviews from PETCO )

I have the Rena XP3 and I wouldn't trade it for nothing else. It is VERY quite, no sound at all, and is easy to assemble, and maintain. It has several chambers to add carbon pack and nitro packs, bio packs...etc I am about to purchase another one for my freshwater aquariums. I have never heard of a bad review, and I can't give one myself.
