Good and Pwerful Router
4 Star Review   By Woodchuck on Home Depot - Apr 30, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I received the router in a very timely manor. One of the handles was/is loose and the provided allen wrench is a little "off" so tightening is difficult. The 2 1/4 hp very powerful and rpm adjustment is great! My experience has been with 1 3/4 hp routers using 1/4" shanks so this is a definite upgrade. I also have the Porter Cable 4212 Dove Tail Jig and I'm disapoiinted because the jig came with the bushing the router did not come with a base plate adapter. Overall I'm please and will be able to do things I wasn't do before.

a good tool with one quirk
4 Star Review   By dzrtdon on Home Depot - Mar 5, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I like the fact that the collet unscrews from the shaft, it makes changing bits easier. The only drawback I noticed is that if you use the dial to set the depth of cut, you have to be sure the motor is bottomed out in the base.

Not what I expected from Porter- Cable
3 Star Review   By CharlieL on Acme Tools - Mar 3, 2013

I bought this router a couple years ago from ACME because of the Porter-Cable name, and because this model is suppose to be router table friendly. I'm just a hobbyist woodworker so the router doesn't see daily or even heavy use in my shop. After a short period of time the spindle lock pin bent, now I see that it is broke off. If you look around the internet you will find that this has been an issue with this router from day one, and is still a issue to this day, several years later after it's introduction to the public. I also had a problem recently geting the router to start which I was lucky enough to be able to fix, I hope. I guess that time will tell. .

5 Star Review   By Iboc on Home Depot - Jan 22, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Product is solid, easy to use, great use of powers switches and easy to change bits. Power switch on top is easy and safe to turn off with one hand quickly.

4 Star Review   By PaperSlayer on Home Depot - Mar 13, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I've used the Router several times. I like the ergonomics and the wide open side which allows me to see what i'm doing. The dial adjustment works great. The slow start makes it easy to manage. Overall... Very satisfied.

No problems so far...
4 Star Review   By Laundy on Home Depot - Dec 26, 2010    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I was a little nervous buying this router after reading some of the reviews, but I haven't been disappointed so far! Pros: Power, soft start, how quiet it is (compared to other routers I've used), the on/off switch which can be accessed on the top or bottom, variable speed, and the large base which can accommodate large diameter bits. Cons: The height adjustment is iffy at best, but I've never really trusted height gauges on any router, I always test the setup on piece of scrap anyway.

Great Powerful Router
4 Star Review   By SpareTime on Home Depot - Nov 17, 2010    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This is my 3rd router and I studied a few routers before purchasing this one about 2 years ago. The depth adjustment is made with an up/down motion which keeps the power cord in the back of the unit. There are 2 power switches one of which is within thumbs reach of the handle. I also like that the dual location power switch extends beyond the top when on. This allows it to be shut off by bumping the switch or placing the router upside down on a flat surface. I've had no problems with the depth adjustments or locking mechanism. As others reported, my collet locking pin broke, but that was due to a personal brain lapse. Luckily this router accepts two wrenches for bit replacement, not all do. I consider the variable speed to be a must when using bits 3/4" & over in diameter. A plunge base can be obtained for this router. My only complaint is the router is a bit heavy making it awkward to use on vertical applications (which is not common, for me). But that's the trade off for the extra power which is nice when routing harder woods and using larger bits.

Worst piece of equipment I ever bought!!!
1 Star Review   By Anonymous99 on Home Depot - Jan 17, 2010    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I bought this router because I was in desperate need to finish a job. Little did I know that the, so called, “adjustment mechanism” for the base would cost me more time than fixing the old router would have. This machine is loud and vibrates like crazy and is way too heavy for its power. I have a ten year old Ryobi 2 HP that outperforms this router. The fancy adjustment mechanism isn't worth anything because it has over 3/8" play between the up and down motion. The scales are completely useless. If you tighten the lock to the point that it actually locks the base (so it doesn't change its setting during the work) the adjustment mechanism doesn't move anymore. if you loosen it to the point where the adjustment mechanism works in the unlocked position, the locking doesn't work anymore. There is not enough adjustment space for longer 1/2" shaft bits. The router falls out of the base too easy. The fast adjustment is as necessary as a sharp stick in the eye. I will never buy Porter Cable again. Buy something that's worth the money. - Bosch or DeWalt!

Powerful!!
5 Star Review   By swayned on Home Depot - Dec 27, 2009    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Got this router for my 30th birthday and started to work with it right away. I was working on putting up wainscoting in the bedroom and needed to put a groove down the shelf board that set on top. I was using maple and the router ate right through the wood perfectly! This router has variable speeds which is nice and the power buttons are easy to reach while working with it. I also bought a straight edge guide to use with this until I get a router table and it worked great also. The only con with this product is that it's carrying case latch was a little cheap to close the case (kept trying to pop open...)

Great product
5 Star Review   By CWise on Home Depot - Nov 5, 2009    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I have owned this model for about six months. The router functions well, the soft start feature helps to control the initial tourq, the 1/2 inch collet grips well and the switches are easy to reach and provide tactile feedback. the speed control is easy to use and set. I recieved two 1/4 inch collets in the case and had to return to the store for a 1/2 inch collet. The 1/4 collet slips unless it is very tight. The shaft lock device bent after about a week. I fixed it myself and now use two wrenches to tighten bits in the collet. That is my only gripe, a stonger lock would be great. I have never had an issue with vibration or balance. The router has never bogged down in hard oak I usually work with. I would buy this router again and I would reccomend it to a friend with the caution to go easy on the shaft lock.
