POOR pad
3 Star Review   By tgroot on Home Depot - Jun 13, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

The only problem with this sander is the Pad. It will fail to hold onto the sanding disks fairly quickly. They sell a Pad replacement conversion kit but that doesnt work very long either. If they fix the pad issue great machine for the money otherwise look at other sanders.

Ryobi Sanders
2 Star Review   By mudpres on Home Depot - May 26, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I am generally extremely happy with my Ryobi power tools with the exception of my sander. My model RS115 worked well until the pad would no longer hold the sanding disks. I threw it in a drawer for a couple of years and purchased another brand. Now I want to replace the sanding pad on my old Ryobi only to find there is no longer a replacement available. I need to purchase another sander but don't know if I will purchase Ryobi.

Great electric hand sander!
5 Star Review   By scooter on Home Depot - May 7, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This sander makes a hand sanding job that would take an hour and turns it into a 10 minute job, without your arm dropping off. I love it! Kinda wish I'd bought the one with a point to get into tight corners, but they are not expensive and could always go back and get that one too. My daughter is refinishing baby furniture and she has used it and loves it as well! The salesman told me that 80 grade sanding discs are really too rough and will rub a hole into what you're sanding. But I find it easier and faster to use and am cautious about oversanding. Works great!

I tried to sand our wood fence with it , I didn't even finish one picket , the sandpaper came off already ! I totally cleaned the surface of the fence, but even like this it was a disaster! I'm so dissapointed, i used this product not even for 2 minutes. 30 bucks out of the window!

It works fantastically for what I bought it for.
4 Star Review   By Dar1 on Home Depot - Apr 6, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I bought this sander for an rather unconventional purpose. I bought it to sand my feet. It works great, takes off the rough spots and doesn't sand me down to far. The sanding surface applies just the right amount of motion for what is needed and seems to stop when I apply too much pressure. Think about this as a safety feature for doing that fine woodworking job; it probably won't cut through your hand/skin if you get too close to where you are holding the item being worked. Oh, and I have used it for sanding a door I was repairing and it worked well for that purpose also.

Nothing but heartache
1 Star Review   By treehousebed on Home Depot - Mar 20, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Within the first five minutes of using this, the sanding pad (not the velcro, the whole pad) almost flew off. I tightened some screws but this continually happened. I brought it back for Home Depot repair, which was thankfully free within warranty. When I got it back it was even worse, now the pad is so tight (or something) that as soon as I touch the sander to wood, it stops altogether. Now I've put in way to much time to bother taking it back again. Do yourself a favor and spring for something a bit more expensive.

Great basic tool. Works as it should. Not especially light or small, but feels heavy duty and sands well. I've had it for about a year, used on several projects, and it's still going strong. I can't compare it to high end stuff as I've not used any high end sanders, but it definitely beats out a junker I had from HF.

If you need a sander to just grind off old paint or stain and not worry about beating it up, this is the one. At the price it is almost disposable. If you are going to do finner work spend the money for slower speeds.

smokin'
1 Star Review   By Jason on Home Depot - Jan 2, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Sander worked great for the first 45 minutes of use, then I noticed that the motor was getting really hot. Gave it a break to let it cool and started back in and it got so hot that I knew there was trouble. Followed the manufacturer's directions of taking the pad off and turning the sander on while holding it (not by the handle) to let it cool and the motor started to die. Turned sander off and smoke was coming out of the air intake vents on the handle. The problem I see is that the air intake to cool the motor is where your hand naturally goes while using the sander. Poor design in my opinion. I returned the sander for another that, when held, does not allow me to unknowingly cover the vents. My advice: try holding sander the way you would work with them before you buy to determine if you'll be cutting off air circulation as most sanders have the intake vents on the handle. Some locate them better than others.

Right out of the box it wasn't working correctly, like the clutch wasn't working right as it bounced more than sanded and you really had to hang on to it? Returned for another and this one is doing ok so far; kind of lost confidence in it for now though!. First time I had a problem with a ryobi tool but it was replaced with no problem by Home Depot.

I owned this sander once til it wore out the pad would not turn when pressure was applied it well passed it's warranty but it ran fine never got hot never had a problem with flying saucer paper syndrome, only reason i gave a four and not a five no variable speed. The replacement i bought has that the r i d g i d, which makes it nice no swirl marks on work piece which can happen at times never happened with ryobi but can so maybe these people are placing the paper upside down for it to fly off . i may have rated this before most of my tools are Ryobi

Pads dont stick for long
2 Star Review   By FeedYourHead on Home Depot - Dec 10, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Firstly, HD advertises this as accepting either hook and loop, or adhesive. That is false; it only accepts Hook and Loop. I used one pad that came with it to sand the trim around doors. The loops on the paper pad did last for one door. The paper still has enough grit, but it won’t stick to the sander anymore. Maybe their paper is awful and the sander OK, but I’m returning it rather than risking it. Called Ryobi and they just said to return it; typical Tier 1 person who didn’t really have any good suggestions. The motor was fine and it collected a lot of dust in the filter.

It worked okay, while it lasted
3 Star Review   By DIYer on Home Depot - Oct 12, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

We have had this for probably close to a year and sporadically use it on projects around the house. We have always had problems with the hook-and-loop not hooking on relatively new sandpaper. We started refinishing our kitchen cabinets lately and it totally died half way through. First the bumper part broke loose, then the sandpaper started coming off even faster. At one point the entire disc attachment came off exposing the stripped friction fitting and after several times putting it back together the motor completely burned up. It seemed to be completely full of dust even with frequent emptying of the bag and vacuuming. We have decided to invest in another brand that might be a little more up front, but hopefully better quality in the long run.

worked great for me
5 Star Review   By patjr on Home Depot - Sep 27, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

used it sand parts of a wood floor that the big sander missed. The B&D I had kept over heating. This thing kept going, plenty of power for me. My problem with it was the dust port doesn't fit a standard small shop van hose. A little duct tape fixed that.

Worked great for a couple hours then started to come loose
1 Star Review   By jason on Home Depot - Sep 13, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I purchased this sander about 3 years ago after my brother was telling me that I needed to have one for working on my house. Haven't used it much until today when I went to sand my wood steps to prep for paint. The sand paper seemed to adhere fairly well for only about a minute. The longer I used it the worse it got, as it began to fling the paper off the pad. I noticed that the pas with the hook tape began to come loose, and would wobble, making it very unbalanced and vibrate horribly. Removed the four screws securing the pad and noticed that the mount for the pad is only held on with a very small Phillips head screw. The bearing was also very warm after only a couple hours of use. I cleaned and re-packed the bearing with high temp grease, then reinstalled the mount and the screw, but used threadlocker to hold the screw in place. I'm disappointed in the design, the center screw should be larger and either a button or hex head to allow proper torque. I know that my brother has also been having the same issue with his sander. Perhaps it should be noted that I'm a mechanical engineerng.

Pad doesn't work with Home Depot Sandpaper
1 Star Review   By Jaybird on Home Depot - Sep 12, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

The Home Depot (red box) sand paper doesn't hook onto this sander properly over time (under 10 users of the sander). The sand paper that comes with it hooks slightly better, but still falls off when you turn it. Do yourself a favor, skip Ryobi and Rigid sanders.

Took a chance and it paid off
4 Star Review   By joelav22 on Home Depot - Sep 10, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I've had this sander since March 2012. I bought it because I was in a pinch and needed one right there and then, Home Depot was the only place open and this was actually the only 5" ROS in stock. 6 months later this is still my main sander! I am a novice woodworker, but I spend a considerable amount of time in my shop - roughly 20 hours a week. I'm not sure if I got lucky, or if other reviewers don't fully understand what to expect from an ROS. I've sanded everything form coffee tables, end tables and large casework to cutting boards down to 600 grit. Never did this sander give up, throw sandpaper off, or leave anything but a flawless finish. I generally use natural oil finishes, so any sanding mishaps become immediately apparent. I do use high quality paper and I also sand with a shop vac attached. This is one Ryobi tool I have no intentions of upgrading until it dies. Also, drywall dust will kill any random orbit sander not specifically designed for drywall very quickly, Do not use this for drywall. In addition, this is not a belt sander. If you want to resurface a floor or a deck, a belt sander is your obvious choice. It would be good (but slow) for the final grits, but don't buy this (or any Random Orbit) with hopes of hogging off massive amounts of material

4 Star Review   By dawnhawk on Home Depot - Jul 31, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

i bought this while visiting relatives to refinish a small tabletop. I have a more expensive model at home (green) so I didn't want to spend a lot of money. I didn't want to buy a piece of junk either. I've had good luck with Ryobi tools so I decided to take a chance on this despite mixed reviews. I had to remove some very old paint from a 2' x 3' ash tabletop and prepare it for finishing. I slapped a Makita 40 grit on and went at it. The main impression that I have is that it took a long time, about 2.5 hours to go through five grits ending at 220. Now I know why I have used a belt sander for refinishing tabletops in the past. The belt doesn't produce as flat a surface but it does seem considerably faster. The belt also spreads dust all around. I have to say that this sander produced almost no dust that wasn't collected in the bag. To call this a random orbit may be a misnomer. Perhaps because of the spin-control brake, the pad rotates at a very steady rate of about three revolutions per second in one direction. I'd call that predictable orbit. This brings me to a pet peeve. Why are random orbit sanders considered to be so superior to 1/4 sheet sanders. How does having the pad rotate at a few revs per second make the slightest difference in the performance--I don't get the point. Square pad sanders are cheaper and use much cheaper paper. Also you can get into corners better. I can't say that this out performs my little (yellow) pad sander. Okay back to performance. I thought vibration was minimal compared to my pad sander, It didn't make my hand numb after 2.5 hours. Noise was fairly loud. There was a slight wobble that was in time with the pad rotation, but it didn't effect performance, nor did I find it objectionable. It was very docile and easy to control even holding it on the top. I even tried holding it by the cord and it didn't get out of control. It remained controllable when I healed it into some low spots and blemishes. Because it came with 120, 220, and 80 grit sheets It saved me another $15 dollars. I only had to buy 40 and 60. It certainly did the job for me. Can't speak to long term reliability. I only downgrade it to a 4 because of the wobble. Oh, the switch is much handier that those little rocker ones that most sanders have.

Ryobi random orbit sander
1 Star Review   By Hjones on Home Depot - Jul 8, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Sander is fine but your can not get the hook and lock pac to stick to the under lying pad and stay on for any length of time if your are really using the sander. the only replacement pad I have found in the home depot stores is the stick on type and no a permanent hook and lock type. This is a simple fix, a replacement pad that is hook and lock only.

I bought this orbital sander on a recommendation from a friend who said he had one that was used on several jobs, and it keeps performing. I used mine to prep finish kithen cabinets prior to repainting. While I did need a detail sander to get the intricate edges, the orbital made quick work on the major areas.

Motor burnt out on third use
1 Star Review   By Seekingsomething on Home Depot - May 3, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

In only its third use the motor slowed down significantly until it would no longer oscillate enough to sand and it gave off a burning smell. I bought it probably four months ago so I am conveniently just over the warranty period and the motor is burning out. I have bought a lot of Ryobi tools, but this sander let me down big time and now I am out $40. I will reconsider buying Ryobi again.

I just purchased this sander, and will be using it to sand, down some of the wood projects, i am doing. I didnt want to spend a terrible amount of money on a sander. I was even more pleased to see that Hd offered a warranty for a single digit price, how can you wrong. As far as the pads being expensive, buy the 20 pack, which actually savea yiu money. Ill sport an edited review once i get to use this sander more.

Nice little workhorse
5 Star Review   By WeekendWarrior on Home Depot - Mar 28, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This sander holds up to some pretty tough use. Pads are easy to replace and fairly cheap on Ebay. Cord is quite long for a power tool which makes it convenient. Bag fills quickly (at least with 50 grit sanding) and is a bit hard to empty, but efficient and can be rinsed. Comfortable grip but on/off buttons a bit inconvenient. I like the blue glowing light when powered. Great tool for the weekend remodeler.

So, I get a call one day from a guy at Ryobi tools. He had read my post on this site about the poor quality sander I bought, and wanted to make good on Ryobi tools, so he sent me another. I've been on some other projects but will get back to kitchen remodel soon and see if the sander spits out parts of the armature. But i will say good on Ryobi for reading comments and trying to do something about a problem, Thanks

Satisfied
5 Star Review   By CampMaintenanceGuy on Home Depot - Jan 31, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This is my first sander, and it took a little practice to get used to using it. I have gone through the grits with two woodworking projects (a coat rack and a bookcase), and I haven't had any troubles with it. I used it for probably three hours intermittently in one morning, and the only issue I had was my arms getting tired.

4 Star Review   By LoggerHead on Home Depot - Jan 7, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This sander has lasted for a few years with no problems and it has worked well for the projects that I have used it with around the house. The only drawback that I have found is the replacement pad that is available for it when the one that comes with it wears out. The replacement sanding pad isn’t worth spending money on. If you look at the Velcro on the sanding pad that is on the floor display Rayobi Orbital Sander and compare it to the replacement sanding pad that is available, you can tell the difference between the two and you can see why sanding disks will not stick to the replacement pad. The sanding disks will fly right off of the sander after placing them on it if you have placed a replacement sanding pad on the sander. This is a great sander for the money, just be ready to toss it after the sanding pad goes out because it is worthless tool since there isn’t a quality replacement sanding pad available that even comes close to the quality of the sanding pad that initially comes with the tool.

A throw away price
5 Star Review   By JimInNEOhio on Home Depot - Dec 13, 2011    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I had a higher end brand and needed new loop pads. They were more than half the cost of the Ryobi so I bought this instead. It works great. I abuse these things like most people do, so if I need to buy it again in two years, so be it. New pads for this are also half its replacement cost once you pay shipping! The dust collector on this is also better than the higher end unit I had which always fell off during use. I got this on sale for about the amount of what I spend in sandpaper every few months.

poor quality internals
1 Star Review   By patrick on Home Depot - Dec 8, 2011    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

probably had about 10 hours on this sander when it started to slow down, then something started making noise before it dropped out what looked to be like brush material. Took sander apart, what looks like a phenelic material used in construction of the armature windings fell apart, time for the junk yard.

Great little sander
5 Star Review   By Homeimprovementrookie on Home Depot - Dec 6, 2011    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

this sander was perfect for the task at hand. Used it after staining new hardwood floors to get a smooth finish. Was impressed with the outcome. Does not produce a lot of dust like others I have used. Sanding sheets stuck well and were relatively cheap. Will get a lot of use out of it! Just wish the cord was a bit longer, only downfall so far.

failed after 1st disc
1 Star Review   By springchiknot on Home Depot - Oct 23, 2011    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Wallpaper removed in b/r. Bought this for it's light weight (female using). Used it to sand drywall after spackling nicks and crannies. Attached disc and after only five minutes of use, the disc fell off. Put on second one, different grit, and that too fell off. I only tried the discs that came with the unit because I plan on returning the extra box I purchased along with the sander. What a disappointment.

Failed on 3rd sandpaper disc
1 Star Review   By Kitchen1 on Home Depot - Sep 19, 2011    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Got it, used it for very light finish sanding. On the 3rd disc of 220 grit it started shaking violently and rattling...upon lifting it off the wood surface it started ringing like a bicycle bell as the internals fell apart. The disc pad cannot be removed for easy fix.....now I gotta find the box to take it back for a refund...DO NOT BUY

AVOID
1 Star Review   By fastphin on Home Depot - Jun 5, 2011    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Bought it for the hook and loop closure, 1/4" sheet holder kept ripping paper. This one work fine for a few boards of redwood removing mold for fencing than slowed down and motor started smoking I sanded just nine 6' boards and didnt use the bag for fear of build up. Got on website to see reviews and decided to share poor experience. I still have 141 boards to sand another trip to the store. Here is another suggestion sell boards with no mold.

Ryobe Orbital Sander---Junk
1 Star Review   By Donwes3 on Home Depot - Apr 18, 2011    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Don't waste your money. Absolute junk Used about 5 times in six months Now it won't hold sanding disks, either stick-on or hook and loop--so it is useless.

Good Buy
4 Star Review   By DW08 on Home Depot - Sep 28, 2010    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

A good tool at a very affordable price. I have run this sander for several hours at a time and have never had a problem with it. I recently used it to strip and refinish a dresser. Together with the Ryobi Corner Cat I was able to do 99% of the sanding; only a very little bit of hand sanding was necessary. There is no better random orbit sander in this price range.

This sander is very prone to chatter when sanding hardwoods. Only very firm pressure around the base will prevent it from oscillating wildly out of control. After 8 hours of fighting it for control it went back to the store for a refund.

Great little sander
5 Star Review   By CoreyG on Home Depot - Jun 20, 2010    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I've had this sander for a couple months now and have been using it in a house I'm remodeling. I bought the Ryobi because I have always had good luck with their tools. No complaints here. As for the other reviews complaining about dust (especially drywall dust) - what do you expect when sanding? From my experience the little bag collects WAY more of the dust than any other sander I've used, though I may just be luckier than the rest. I even used it with 80grit to take off about 1/4" from the bottom of a door when I didn't have a planer and it did a great job! If you want a drywall sander, I suggest you buy a drywall sander and a vac with drywall filter if you don't want dust everywhere, and chances are you will still end up with dust everywhere. That's the nature of the beast. Anyone else looking for a good all-around sander at a great price, here it is. Cons: None so far

Good for the price
3 Star Review   By aroyals on Home Depot - Apr 23, 2010    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

While I would not use this sander on my finer woodworking projects, it works great for smaller and not as meticulous jobs. I bought this for some messy remodeling jobs, and it works fine. Definitely gives off a lot of dust despite the small vacuum, but I expected that given we were sanding dried drywall mud.

Handle TOO weak
1 Star Review   By IZVet on Home Depot - Nov 10, 2009    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

The clips that hold the sandpaper in place are about 1mm thick and snap very easily. I would find a better product and pay the extra buck.

Good little work horse
4 Star Review   By TM55 on Home Depot - Oct 3, 2009    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This is a great inexpensive sander that gets the the job done. It does a fantastic job and it is small and easy to control. Works great for all my remodeling jobs around the house. It has never stopped working on me in the last few years that I have owned it. The dust collection isn't the greatest, but not many are.

not quite dustless...
4 Star Review   By essayons on Home Depot - Jun 18, 2009    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I used this to strip the textured grit off the walls of our new house. It worked great but had some dust. The major dust and issues are when I sanded over any joint compound or spackle that we used to repair holes. Then the ENTIRE house was coated in the dust, which we didn't realize until we were done and walked around to see the dust. It orbits great and you don't need any additional pressure. It is super easy to swap pads and you can choose any grit to apply for the job. Too bad not actually dustless, even with a vacuum hooked up to it.

orbit sanders
3 Star Review   By edro on Home Depot - Nov 28, 2008    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

You get what you pay for! This sander is really good for the price but the backing pad and conversion pad need changing over time. The reason for it not orbiting is because the backing pad needs replacement and the reason for the sand paper, hook and look velcore, not sticking is the conversion pad needs replacing. You can by the kit for $12.00 which contains both pads.

Tool doesn't last......
1 Star Review   By Enginerd on Home Depot - Oct 30, 2008    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Used it to sand smooth some drywall patches 6 months ago. Then I used it to sand the tops of the railing on my deck. Now I wanted to sand smooth the arms of some chairs I made and it doesn't "orbit" anymore. All it does is spin up to a thousand RPM and blast the wood and sanding disk to bits if you try to use it. Looked like a good buy at the time, but I should have paid just $20 more and gotten something more durable.
